How Not to Test:

By slathering yourself in several different scents at the same time, on different parts of the body. Dance of Death on my wrist and neck, Umbra on one hand, Iago on the other...   Not to mention the myriad of other scents that I've tried and simply let fade, instead of washing them off properly. *fail*   Is it my fault that I've bought about 300 different imps/bottles in the last month and now I don't know what to do with them? (Yes.)

Forum Updates and News
 

Forum Software Upgrade (updated)

We recently updated the forum software. As these things tend to go, there were a few unexpected bumps.   When we updated, BBCode, the Gallery, Feedback, and Unresolved Swaps were not functional. They now are, hooray!     Now to tell y'all about the updates!   Forums had actually a really boring update - it just fixed bugs and was setting things up for the big update that's scheduled to come out in Q1 2011. I know, all that fuss and nothing changed as far as what we see! There will be a new skin, but that's independent of this update.     Blogs update is actually pretty big. Many of the changes were back end related, but here are some of the things you might notice! New "Like" system on Blogs and Blog Entries.
Notification support for new blog entries, and new comments, so you can watch a member's blog or an entry.
Uses a new comments system.
New "Manage Blogs" area.
Facebook Like and Twitter Tweet buttons on blog entries.
Cleaned up design.
Single column layout on individual blogs.     Gallery has returned to us!     Feedback / Unresolved Swaps / Price Caps / Cookbook all had backend updates that will let me start working on some cool things, but you won't see it for a few months yet!

REVIEW: Water of Notre Dame

Brings peace to the spirit, a sense of calm and fulfillment, and attracts the aid of beneficial spirits.     In The Bottle Smells like watah. And a bit of flowery.   Wet On Skin Aquatic, with light, calm florals. Maybe I didn't put enough on, but I have to put my wrist right up in my nose to get much off it.   Dry On Skin Much stronger now, especially the florals; I can actually smell it without trying to. A little like soap or baby powder. It's hard to describe when I don't have a proper description to work off of.   Longevity Lasted only two or so hours.   Color Bright white and light lilac.

Scent Notes

Work In Progress:   Notes of Yay: Cinnamon Coffee White Tea Ginger Hawaiian Ginger Honeysuckle Pink Pepper Pink Grapefruit Violet ? Almost Always Delicious: Pomegranate Honey Gardenia Citrus Grapefruit Lemon Lime Pepper Amber Ozone Lotus Sweet Pea Tonka Jasmine Lavender Lilac Fig Old Paper/Parchment Candles, Candle Wax, Beeswax Moonflower ? Approach with Caution: Leather - doesn't like me, but mmmmmmm on the husband Pumpkin - one of my favorite scents, but the lab's pumpkin note tends to be too buttery altogether for me Patchouli - better as a supporting character than a main note Rose - some are wonderful, some are meh. Mint Sugar Coconut Licorice/Anise Red Velvet Cake - I love the taste of this, and want to try some, but foody is uncertain on me. Booze - will need more testing to know which ones are yum, and which ones make me go blecch... Musks - need to categorize. So far white musk seems ok, dark musk not so much. Strong Woody Notes Frankincense Opoponax Lemongrass Myrrh Vetiver Beer - I hate the taste of most beers, especially hoppy ones. Haven't smelled it in perfume yet though - who knows? Apple - depends on the blend, but good to be aware of it beforehand Pineapple - in just the right blend, awesome - otherwise blech. Currants - strongly blend-dependent Red Ginger ? Notes of DOOM: Butter & Buttery Yuckiness Milk (only ok on the daughter, but she likes it) Cherries - turns to cough syrup, blech Grape - much like cherry, smells like cough syrup almost always Maple - don't like it. Don't like the smell, the taste, nada. Chocolate - have had some success with the dry cocoa type, but very very suspicious of chocolate in my perfume Juniper Dark Myrrh Pine Sap Skin Musk Aged or Dark Patchouli Rum ? Overall, I tend to enjoy spicy/light floral/citrus/herbal type of perfumes more, less so on the foody/woody/resiny side. Still working on narrowing that down. Switch Wrap Up

I just wanted to say that I had the most wondrous Witch--Dark Alice!--who really blew me away. So kind and generous! I feel like I have a new friend! I can't thank her enough!   Also, now the my witchee knows who I am, gotta say, too, that my witchee was wonderful! Jencallisto was a pleasure to stalk, was always quick to post that she'd got things, and was just a joy! Another new friend!   Thanks, too, to all the many ringleaders who made this possible.   My love to you all!

REVIEW: Mi-Go Brain Canister

Pink pepper, peony, jasmine, mango, kiwi, pomegranate, pineapple, white ginger, serene white tea and light musks.   Thank God I at least know what most of these things smell like on their own, because otherwise I would be in something of a pickle trying to decipher such a multi-element scent.   In The Bottle First reaction: I don't know what I'm smelling, I know I've smelled it before, but I don't think I like it. On closer inspection, I could catch the fruity notes and even a bit of sharpness-- the ginger? The florals stood out above that. I'm not sure what the first scent I encountered was, as my mental scent library is limited, but I suppose it was either the pink pepper or the peony-- being the ones I'm unfamiliar with. Starting to soften on my initial reaction.   Wet On Skin Much sharper! More floral here, but not much fruit. A bit musky. Less startling when diluted.   Dry On Skin The musk is starting to come out over the floral, but still not much in the way of fruitiness. Though, oddly, I did get a faint tang in the back of my throat resembling fruit roll-ups of all thing. Suppose it does make sense, considering all the fruits listed.   Longevity   Color Antique rose, mauve, yellowed paper.

REVIEW: Galvanic Goggles

metallic, Indian musk, tobacco flower, African balsam In The Imp The metallic scent is quite prominent here. It has a mild alcoholic burn-- the sort you often get with perfumes-- but the other elements stop it from being unpleasant. There's a sort of sweetness underneath it all. Wet On Skin Much sharper then in the imp; it almost has a citrusy eucalyptus tang to it. The muskiness is apparent, but mostly covered by the metal.   Dry On Skin The metal's calmed down, though still hanging around. Now the musky scents have come out, giving it a soft but masculine feeling, but with a hit of sweetness. I really have no idea what tobacco leaf or balsam smell like (or at least, I don't think I do), so I can't say how well they stand out individually. Heady, but nothing that'll make you feel like falling over.   Longevity Expect this on to be on you for the duration. It's OK, go to sleep; it'll be there when you wake up.   Color Silver and brass and brown-orange with a little swirl of light, light green-blue.

Speculation

My unofficial speculation for the anniversary update.....   I still think the periodic table scents might be the Phoenix scents. I know someone said those were for the upcoming local alchemist section, but I still have this nagging hunch. I counted and it seems there were 7 periodic prototypes at the will-calls, which is close to the number of Phoenix scents we are expecting. And it just seems to fit the themes from the past Phoenixes. Or, it seems like a natural progression.   As for resurrected scents, I'm going to make some guesses. Someone recently posted that they got frimps of Mantis and Neo-Tokyo in their order, which I thought was unusual since those were both discontinued a few years ago. So I'm guessing we might see one or both of those resurrected. As for LE, I'm just going to make some wild guesses: Underpants, Pinched, or Glowing Vulva. Those are because Beth seems to like to bring back popular and longed-for scents in the past (Midway, Snake Charmer, Hod).   It also crossed my mind that we could see Pumpkin King or Noir. Now I know that the recipe for Pumpkin King was lost, but I'm a firm believer that anything is possible and I would love to see Pumpkin King available some day. Same deal with Noir. That is another scent that lots of people would love to see come back.   I can hardly wait to find out!

Vacation time coming up

I have over a week off work coming up soon. That makes me happy but I also want to make the most of it! I'd like to maybe make a list of things to do. Just fun things, hopefully cheap or free things, too.   I can go to the zoo, of course, but I can do that any time. I live right next to the zoo and I have a yearly pass so it's always free, and I just walk there. This is one thing I'll definitely be doing.   I can go to Newport On The Levee, which has lots of things to do. AMC Movie theater, for one thing, which isn't free or cheap, but is a nice splurge. Also the Newport Aquarium is there. I have a yearly pass for that too, so that is a free option. What would be best is if I could convince someone to go with me instead of going by myself for once!   I really should start walking every day, not just for exercise, but for my mental well-being also. There are more benefits to this, besides just burning calories, but I need that, too.   Thanksgiving falls at the end of the week so I want to find a good recipe, something to make and bring to my mom's. I have a couple ideas but I want to atually try it out first, earlier in the week, so I know for sure I'm making something good. I have so many cookbooks and don't use them enough! I really need to go grocery shopping. My refrigerator and cupboard are bare!   So.....that's all I got right now. I need more things to do!   Thrift shopping Thrift donating Sell some stuff on ebay? Get my camera working again Visit Kevin and Charlie in Columbus....not free but could be cheap Visit Sally Get together with Alan Get together with Luke Visit David Pack Cross-stitch Go to Ikea (but don't spend a whole lot of money?) Organize closets Go out with Jen   Okay.....that's enough for a start. I'll have homework and laundry to do but I was mainly trying to list fun stuff. I mean, it is a vacation, and I can't really go anywhere (mainly because of school and lack of spending money), but I want it to be worth it. And I've had this thing lately where I want to get rid of a lot of this material stuff I've accumulated. I feel like it's encumbering me, if that's the right use of that word. I feel a bit stifled, spiritually. I need room to breathe. I have a fantasy of getting rid of everything and roaming the country. Wouldn't that be awesome? I might do it if I had unlimited funds for travelling and accomodations. I guess I could get really creative and find ways to do it anyway. Something to think about.

Blog Entry #2....

So since my first entry, the Boomslang problem got solved thanks to a lovely forumite. It is soooo beautiful, I can see why so many people love it! Sadly, it goes to yuck on my skin in a minute flat. I am fortunate that with this last discontinuances announcement, my only love of that list is Phantom Queen. She was my first imp a year ago when I first sniffed a BPAL! Currently I am looking forward to trying Wulric, and Phantom Calliope. And Cathedral, one of these days, soon. I am seeking at the moment the perfect cherry scent, the perfect lavender, and a beautiful incense scent. I also want to try Suck It and Oneiroi. I have already discovered I LOVE the Shadowy & the Sublime, and will be purchasing a bottle or two this coming Friday before the Weenies go down. I'm also terribly looking forward to our Yule decants coming! Can't wait to get my hands on Snow White and Gelt and The Clock Strikes Midnight...Madame Moriarty has become my "I'm feelin sexy and frisky" scent....just wish I had a man beast to be sexy and frisky with! Sigh. I've also secured a bottle of Peach Moon, and can't wait til next summer, because it will be a beautiful summer scent. One thing I have figured out about BPAL is that the obsession over the different scents is a great cure for depression; before I joined this forum, I had a few imps from my purchase last year, and really did not have much going on in my mind except the usual work, parenthood and college and day to day things. New BPALs and adoration of my loved scents is a little thought consuming happy thing that distracts me from the normal hum drum and keeps the depression at bay. Also, I really love being on here and seeing that the same women on this forum that talk scents, make up and clothing (girly stuff) also play WOW, read comic books, and have things like Olivia Dunham or Veronica Mars in their sigs or avatars, and it makes me feel right at home. My office at work has decreed that as of January 1st they are going 7 days a week and will now be working Sundays. This was a bitter pill to swallow, as well as the fact that my sub department has to work til 7 pm two nights a week. This means that with those 2 nights, and my school classes two nights, I will have a total of 4 nights hardly being with my daughter. I was devastated! She's only 6, and her father has not seen her in over 2 years. She needs me. But, I am looking forward to the paychecks next year, because I dumped my health insurance plan with them. They wanted about $25 more a week for shittier coverage. I said "No way." I found better coverage through a plan through my college, that costs less, will not garner me a whole bunch of bills in the mail due to the deductible, no visit copays, and it will still cover my rheumatoid arthritis. By June I can get my daughter on Medicaid and it will cover her psychotherapy, too. I still have to discuss it with my worker, but I think it will work out great. But the news from work has also lit the fire under my ass and reinforced my dedication to school. Yes it will be rough for several months, but my goal is to graduate May 2012. Between spring 2011 and winter 2012 I will need to complete 32 credit hours for my first degree. (I'm not sure if my Pell grants will cover a 2nd one, but I will have to see). I love my work, I've been there for 6 1/2 years, but I can taste the end in sight eventually. It is going to hell in a handbasket! Much like the rest of the world, it feels like. I am trying to be positive, really I am. From where I sit, though, it appears people's values have gone down the drain. All I can do is worry about my own values and behavior, and take pride in my child and my home and my goals.

Good Judy: Gothic

Gothic Category: Punk Quantity: sample   Description: GOTHIC Dramatic and romantic. Moody, mysterious and morbid. Pale skin. Black and jewel-toned velvets mixed with lace and leather. Influenced by the supernatural and the creative. Black roses planted in graveyard dirt. Blood-red lips inhaling a sweet-clove cigarette. A crushed velvet choker cutting into smooth pale flesh. Beautifully dark and sweet.   Review:   In the bottle: I do smell a rose, and something herbal, mixed with clover. It’s almost lemony.   Wet: Yeah, I definitively smell clove, but it’s sweet and soft, with a background note of cigarette.   Dry: A mix of (black?) rose and clove. It’s dark, bitter, and mysterious.   Verdict: It’s too bad this one is not available anymore; it’s gender-neutral, not too feminine. However, I suppose it competed with the American Gothic collection. Thanks for the remaining sample, Gary!

Sigh of relief

I am finally done with early fall term, and I think I got some good grades. I know I passed CPT coding, which I was really worried about for a while. I was worried because I just wasn't getting it and I bombed a test and a couple quizzes, but I finally got the hang of it more or less, and ended up doing okay. So I am on a short break until late fall term starts (a week from today, I think), and just enjoying that even though I'm at work right now. I placed an order with the lab and I'm impatient for that to arrive, but it won't be here for a couple more weeks. It's just a relief to be done with those 3 classes. For the last 2 or 3 weeks I've been really stressed out and was having trouble seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
