Switch Witch Questions

Anyone else a total nerd like me and would like DnD/Roleplay stuff (Dice, minis, books, corny tees, etc.)? My dad tried to teach us DnD when I was in middle school but we never made it after that one hour of teaching. I don't do other roleplay stuff either. Wow, that was wordy way to say no thanks.   On a similar note, who likes yarn? What kinds/colors/weights/fibers? Handspun? Glitter? Funky art yarn made from shredded jeans, fake flowers, lace, sequins, and the tattered souls of your enemies? Other craft supplies you desperately want more of and can't live without? No to the yarn. Craft supply-wise I love paper. Different textures, colors, patterns. Be it for notes or whatever. Same goes for blank cards.   Which witches would like hair accessories: clips, scrunchies, hairsticks, headscarves, etc? ANy but the head scarves. My hair is finally long enough again for hairsticks and I use clips and hair elastics every day.   Hand beaded jewelry, yay or nay? Yay!   To make up for the fact that I probably won't be able to send my witchee homebaked goodies, will Tim Tams in any number of varieties be an acceptable replacement? Sure.   Is there any time during the holidays (or the rest of the round) when you'll be away from home for a significant period and it'd be best not to send anything by mail? Nope. I'll be here always.   Speaking of which, how many Browncoat witches do we have?? And if you are, would you be interested in getting a Kaylee parasol? If not, would you be interested in getting a paper parasol hand painted with your favorite colors? The photo in the thread of the parasol was gorgeous. I'd probably end up using it often during the summer because the sun hates me.   Everyone who wants a beaded potholder, please to be raising the hands! No thanks. We don't use potholders in this house, whatever kitchen towel is closest works.   It seems like there are quite a few knitting witches, so I assume they are on the Ravelry forum as well. If so, what are your names on there so I can stalk you? Sadly, I do not knit.   Would you personally rather get handmade jewelry or the beads to make something yourself? Handmade. Beads will get lost or stolen by evil cats.

Winter SwitchWitch My Answers

Culled from the thread, as of 02 Jan Languages besides English? How fluent are you? The language I know best after English is Pharaonic Egyptian – can’t really say “speak” because the inflections of the ancient language are, at this point, a best-guess. I had two years of German in college and like to say that meine Grammatik ist gut, aber meine Worterverzeichnis ist Scheiss. Two years of French in high school, which I’ve mostly forgotten. I’ve picked at Arabic and Romanian. I’d like to study Gaelic, any flavor, but I get the feeling that’s another one that’s tough in self-study. My Old and Middle English are fair, but rusty. Anything about language or linguisitcs gets me excited! Do you like mythical/fantastical creatures? Which ones? I’m fond of many: dragons are a big one, centaurs (any half-beast, really), grotesques and gargoyles, werewolves if they count. Travel guides (like Fodors and Zagat)? For which destinations? Wow, I love travel guides but can’t think of a particular destination to ask for. Musicals seen (Broadway or otherwise)? Favorites? Why? I’ve seen, let’s see . . . A Chorus Line, Annie, The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, SpamALot, Wicked. I’m sure I’m forgetting some. I don’t have a particular passionate favorite. Love splashy productions, but I also love inexpensive or experimental productions, and student productions, too. I’ve always loved live theater, and Hubby does too, so we go fairly often – not always musicals, of course – and mean to go even more often then end up missing stuff, darned short runs. Disney fan? Hubby and I went to Disneyland every year for a while, on whatever’s the last day before people go back to school/work after New Year’s Day – that’s statistically the lowest attendance day, so there’s no fighting crowds. Add a threat of rain, and you’re pretty much guaranteed a deserted park! We always have fun, but we’re not obsessed like some folks. Went to Disney World/Epcot once many years ago – pre-MGM – and that was fun, too. We particularly liked the Animal place, and Pleasure Island. Usually enjoy the animated films, but, again, not obsessed. Love animated film in general. Room sprays? Ah! I’m always interested in room sprays. Only have Cathouse and it’s wonderful. I’m not particularly itching for any of the inquisition ones, but would enjoy them if they found their way into my hands. Magazines, money no object? Love the magazine format – anything in any of my interests (dogs, history, science, nature - !) make fun and inexpensive gifts. Valerie Anands/Fiona Buckley? Never heard of her. Always eager to try a recommended author. Who is your favorite villain of all-time? There are so many great ones. Rickman’s Sheriff of Nottingham comes to mind (as I see it has for others as well!); for sheer villainy, there’s Rasputin in the Bluth Anastasia.   10 Dec Favorite animals? Least favorite? I have to say, animals are a big deal to me and I love and respect them all. This list is of the particular favorites! Canids (all of them, but especially dogs and wolves), corvids (all of them, but especially ravens and crows), spiders, Asian elephants, sea turtles, birds of all kinds (not a huge rock dove - "city pigeon" - fan, though), horses, donkeys, goats. Also, see my blog for the list of my Totems. Least favorite: fleas. I just can't come up with any positives there. How do you feel about Heifer International? Or do you have other favorite charities not mentioned in your application? I love the mission of Heifer International. My other charities are mentioned on my questionnaire. Tassel/jingle belt? Not a shimmyer, nor much of a belt-wearer. Three places to visit or re-visit? Re-visit Egypt and England, Visit Turkey. Literary erotica? Sure. Chocolate? Not my favorite. I'll eat it, of course. White tends to be too sugary-sweet, but anything from milk to dark to high-cacao is all right. Chocolate that supports rainforest conservation or sustainable living is nice. What really makes chocolate good is if there's stuff in it! Like nuts or fruits or both! I even liked the chocolate-covered garlic; I really like flavor combinations.   09 Dec Honey? Love it, any kind! I’d especially be interested in unusual or craft honeys. What cartoons did you grow up watching? Any animated shows you still watch? I can’t think of anything particular from when I was small – Warner Brothers, I guess. I’ll always love animated stuff. From adulthood, Animaniacs and Freakazoid were favorites and I haven’t gotten any of the DVDs yet (not that I’d expect my Witch to get me something so expensive, but if an inexpensive used copy was found … ) Love The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park. Am I forgetting anything? Probably. Who are your forum friends, person or people your witch can contact for ideas? Gypsy Rose Red and SueDonym know me pretty well. My past Witches Dark Alice and Suileach may have ideas, too! Chia Pet? Never had one. People mock them, but I’d be willing to give one a try. Houseplants/containers? I don’t really have good spots inside for plants. The patio is tricky, too, because it gets strong sun in the morning (intensified by the concrete surface), then is shaded all day. Shade plants tend to go “Aaaahhh!” from the sun, and partial shade plants don’t get enough. We are kind of planning to put a sculpture or rock garden out there. Baskets/Jars/Other Interesting Containers? Love containers!! Any size, shape, or style would be welcomed with love, filled or empty. Shoe size/style? Slippers? Size ranges from 9 to 10. I like athleticy shoes, especially Keens and Tevas. Love cork-bed shoes, like Naets (and Birkenstocks, too – but they only have the one closed-toe style, and I must wear closed toe and heel at work). I actually have a Zappos list, but I don’t maintain it regularly, just when I’m shopping for something particular. My feeties do get chilled when I’m lounging around the house (well, in Winter anyway!) – I usually just wear socks, but slippers work too! BPAL boxes/imp cases? I can always use new bottle or imp storage (must destash one of these days!) Handmade calligraphy Would be great! Something like this would be nice to hang on the wall. Fanfic, short or long? Sure. I prefer adventure to romance, though. A pairing – any pairing, slash or het, could be thrown in, but not as the meat of the story. Harry Potter, Whedonverse, Marvel Universe … I’ll try to think of more. Weirdest and/or most practical thing not buying right now? Cool question, but nothing comes to mind. I keep talking myself out of a GPS unit, then spending that same amount on some other, less useful electronic device.   Culled from the thread, prior to 09 Dec Love Warm Winter Wearables! I've never actually tried mittensbut think I prefer gloves. And my hands are fairly large, so cute girly gloves are often too tight. I've recently become obsessed with arm warmers because they've proved to be a good way to help moderate my temperature - I'm often too warm if I put on a sweater when it's my hands that are cold, for example. Also great for reading in bed when my arms have to be out of the cozy covers. Thing is, I've got seven pairs now, so probably don't really need more *mini-pout* . Not that I'd reject a new pair should my Witch feel compelled! Addition since original answer! I am now thinking that I want a “basic” pair - such as these - to wear at agility class. It can get pretty cold (20s) but layering is important to avoid overheating when we’re running. Scarves, scarflets, cowls, hats ... love 'em all, any style! Cookies: I actually prefer cookies without chocolate. All kinds of nuts and berries are great. Oh, but no coconut as I don't like the texture. I'll bet cashew butter cookies would be wonderful. Homemade t-shirts: awesome! The more done up the better! Unusual ornaments, ornaments for holidays other than Christmas: Wonderful! I would love. Cat hair: Not a huge problem. Hubby is quite allergic, but has been less affected since he went on arthritis meds. A few hairs here and there should be quite all right. Please do not send entire cats. Handknit socks: Sure! Absolutely any style or variety, keeping to the colors in my questionnaire would be optimal. Ladies nine or ten. DnD Roleplay stuff: Not a roleplayer. Hair accessories: As emphasized in my questionnaire, I love them - all types! I always wear my hair back so like to have a variety of decorations. Hand beaded jewellery: Absolutely. Tim Tams: I was another who didn't know what these were - for some reason I thought they were pasties. Thanks to Sorry I Can't Scroll Back Right Now To Get Your Name for describing them. They don't sound like my kind of thing, especially if "fluff" = marshmallow, which has gelatin which I won't eat. Away from home for a significant period: Nope! Greatest sadness There's nothing major I'm dealing with, thank goodness. Relationship and loved ones are all well. I get stressed pretty easily, though - between social anxiety and sensory dysfunction, I need a lot of down time, and if I don't get it, Ugh! - so if I need cheering up, that's what it will be from. Puzzle books Love them - crosswords, any word game puzzles; but not the math or number ones. Like to cook? Hate it - but mostly it's figuring out what to make that doesn't take a million pots and pans and $$ of ingredients that I don't have on hand (how many times I've bought a whole box of cornstarch, for example, for one dang teaspoon). SO, I wouldn't be averse to some tips or recipes from my Witch to help with those issues. Things that keep or freeze well would be good, too. My dietary deets are in my questionnaire. Winter Holiday? ] We celebrate Christmas in my family. Maybe someday I'll riff on what the holiday means to me . . . Other Forums Frequented? Actually, no.

Switch Witch questions, part 1!

Question for future witchee: Would you like to receive ATCs or would you prefer something more usable, like bookmarks or something? Sure! An ATC would be cool but I don't use bookmarks.   Everyone who wants a beaded potholder, please to be raising the hands! No thanks, I don't cool.   Since we're talking about warm winter wearables, who likes hats? Mittens? Arm warmers? I would luuurve a nice cozy hat, and some mittens or armwarmers (since I have very small hands, no gloves since they're hard to size)   Who would like a pair of handknit socks? Size? Color preference? Cabled, ribbed (for your pleasure), stranded colorwork, etc.? No thanks. I don't wear socks much. *is a slipper girl* I have size2 (kids!) feet so socks are hard to size   If your witch were to send you cookies, what kind of cookies would you like? NO RAISINS EW. I love chocolate and COCONUT!!!   Who likes tshirts? What about homemade tshirts? Like with transfers I made myself.... Not much of a tshirt fan.   Another question! How does everyone feel about steampunk? (It's my new obsession, so I thought I'd ask.) As long as it's mostly silver, I'm down with that. I don't like gold/bronze colors though.   So, question all- how do people feel about unusual ornaments? As in, for holidays other than Christmas? I don't really have anywhere to hang them.   Anyone else a total nerd like me and would like DnD/Roleplay stuff (Dice, minis, books, corny tees, etc.)? Nope   Who likes yarn? What kinds/colors/weights/fibers? Handspun? Glitter? Funky art yarn made from shredded jeans, fake flowers, lace, sequins, and the tattered souls of your enemies? Other craft supplies you desperately want more of and can't live without? Not me. I fail at arts and crafts.   Which witches would like hair accessories: clips, scrunchies, hairsticks, headscarves, etc? I can always use bobby pins (colored ones would be fun!), hairbands (smaller hairbands for my smaller head)   Hand beaded jewelery, yay or nay? Sure!   To make up for the fact that I probably won't be able to send my witchee homebaked goodies, will Tim Tams in any number of varieties be an acceptable replacement? Nomnomnom YES.   Is there any time during the holidays (or the rest of the round) when you'll be away from home for a significant period and it'd be best not to send anything by mail? I'm going to be home for Xmas and unless something comes up, I should be around Jan/Feb too!   Speaking of which, how many Browncoat witches do we have?? And if you are, would you be interested in getting a Kaylee parasol? If not, would you be interested in getting a paper parasol hand painted with your favorite colors? No interest in Firefly/Serenity   It seems like are quite a few knitting witches, so I assume they are on the Ravelry forum as well. If so, what are your names on there so I can stalk you? No knitting skills. D:

Winter 2008 SW questions! Round 1, fight!

Helloooo! I am taking a break from an insanely busy study schedule (huge exam on Monday) to reply to the first batch of SW questions. Woot! I can't wait for the winter round to start. This will probably be oddly justified, because I'm pasting it out of pico (it's almost dinner time, no time to fuss with line breaks). Here we go, then:   12/5 What kind of candy/sweet treat would you like to receive?   There are these cookies at Trader Joe's... they're called Candy Cane Jo-Jos. They're apparently like vegan crack. I never ever ever go to TJ's, but... I would like to try the Candy Cane Jo Jos.   Other than that, sweets are really one place you can't go wrong with me. I can't indulge in them too much (blood sugar problems), but I love them more or less uniformly. Hard candies, dark chocolate, and vegan caramel are all made of win.   I also love the combination of salt + sweetness always. I... I love salt a lot.   Would you personally rather get handmade jewelry or the beads to make something yourself?   Oh, that's tough. Either would be really wonderful.   12/4   It seems like there are quite a few knitting witches, so I assume they are on the Ravelry forum as well. If so, what are your names on there so I can stalk you?   No Ravelry!   Speaking of which, how many Browncoat witches do we have?? And if you are, would you be interested in getting a Kaylee parasol? If not, would you be interested in getting a paper parasol hand painted with your favorite colors?   I don't even know what this means, so I don't think it applies to me! In general, though, a parasol would be lovely-- it's never not sunny here (more or less), aaaaand I could take a parasol to Burning Man next year.   Is there any time during the holidays (or the rest of the round) when you'll be away from home for a significant period and it'd be best not to send anything by mail?   I'll be out of town for maybe two weeks for Christmas, visiting my in-laws in Oregon. Dates are still tentative because my spouse STILL hasn't asked his boss when he's allowed to leave (despite me hassling him about it for literally months), but I'm guessing we're looking at about December 21st-January 3rd or 4th.   You can still send mail to me during that time, though-- we have a very secure mailbox (as in, it locks) and I'd also be happy to supply the in-laws' address if you for some reason want it.   And I'll have email access throughout the whole trip, though my forum time will probably be limited.   To make up for the fact that I probably won't be able to send my witchee homebaked goodies, will Tim Tams in any number of varieties be an acceptable replacement?   Alas, I am fairly certain Tim Tams aren't vegan.   Hand beaded jewellery, yay or nay?   Yes! I love shinies!   Which witches would like hair accessories: clips, scrunchies, hairsticks, headscarves, etc?   I have no haiiiiiir! Well, not much hair. I think it's about two inches long now. So most of these things wouldn't apply to me. A headscarf could be nice, though! This all sounds awesome (esp. souls of enemies), but I don't really do much with yarn at this point. I absolutely LOVE to knit, but aside from the fact that I've never figured out how to do things with circular needles (socks, etc), knitting makes my carpal tunnel flare up like it's nobody's business. And I can never remember how to crochet.   As for craft supplies: I made beaded jewelry for my witchee last round and, to my surprise, had a totally BLAST doing it. Just think, you could send me beads this round, and then I could work 'em into jewelry for my witchee, and it'd be like this whole circle of awesome. Heh heh.   Anyway, aside from yarn and beads, I love more or less all craft supplies, which is funny because I'm not really crafty. Prior to college, I did a LOT of art stuff and am well versed in just about every media there is other than pen and ink... I still find it intensely relaxing and engaging to make art, even though I know I'm not very good at it.   Oh yeah: I would love love love pen and ink supplies, because like I said, I've never done it before... and I'm dying to.   Anyone else a total nerd like me and would like DnD/Roleplay stuff (Dice, minis, books, corny tees, etc.)?   Ha ha ha. Again, this is something my dude would love. I like funny tshirts, but beyond that, I don't do much DnD-y stuff these days. I am a big ol' nerd though.   How do people feel about unusual ornaments? As in, for holidays other than Christmas?   I don't really decorate for holidays other than Christmas. And, in fact, this'll be the first time I've put up a tree in five or so years. (I'm never home for Christmas, but I love decorating the tree, so I think I'm going to get a fake one and deck the hell out of it this year before I leave town.)   If you sent me an ornament for another holiday, I'd uh, probably put it on my potential Christmas tree. Or I'd hang it on the fridge.   Which brings me to a totally random point: I LOVE fridge magnets!     Question: who would like a pair of handknit socks? Size? Color preference? Cabled, ribbed (for your pleasure), stranded colorwork, etc.?   If you are a sock making person and really want to make my day, knit a pair of socks for my husband. He has size 11ish feet and no real color preferences (his favorite color is blue, for what's worth) and really genuinely adores big fuzzy handknitted socks. He is NOT vegan and is tooootally happy to indulge in lamb's wool, alpaca, etc.   I'd love knitted socks too, but I prefer less bulky ones! And I really love knee socks. (Can you knit knee socks? I suppose one must be able to.) I rock the 7.5 shoe size.   How does everyone feel about steampunk?   Generally positive! I'm not as in to it as many other people here, but I do like it.   Since we're talking about warm winter wearables, who likes hats? Mittens? Arm warmers?   Hats = yes! Mittens = no, my hands always get too hot when I wear them. (They even did back in Massachusetts, the land of ice and snow.) Arm warmers could go either way. And... I know this is probably too big to do in the span of a SW round, but just in case this is your secret burning desire... I loooooove sweaters.     If your witch were to send you cookies, what kind of cookies would you like?   What kind of cookies WOULDN'T I like? Seriously, if it's vegan and it's a cookie, I'm gonna love it. I'm a shameless cookie ho.   Who likes tshirts? What about homemade tshirts? Like with transfers I made myself....   YES! Me! Pick me! Like I said before, I wear tshirts more or less all the time.   12/3 Would you like to receive ATCs (artist trading cards) or would you prefer something more usable, like bookmarks or something?   If you sent me an ATC, I would um... probably use it as a bookmark. Sad but true. I love bookmarks, though!   12/2 What witch would like a cloak?   You know, while a cloak would be totally awesome, I would probably never wear it. I feel extreeeeeemly self conscious when I wear anything other than tshirts and jeans... comes of being in a field that is populated mostly by men, I think.

I love hats, I love boots, I just never wear them myself.   Do you like to cook? if so, what? Would you like things like spices, cookbooks, recipes, tips? whatever my witch thinks I might like   Do any of you like puzzle books? I like crosswordsand word searches. Jumbles are fun too. Winter Switch Witch Questions #1

What kind of candy/sweet treat would you like to receive?   Dark chocolate, sweet-tarts, smarties, licorice of the black variety, reese peanut butter cups, anise candies.   Would you personally rather get handmade jewelry or the beads to make something yourself?   Either! I like fun jewelry and I also like playing with beads and wire, even if my actual wire-wrapping skills explain why I love to barter with Kythryne. Also, I love the little itty bitty seed beads to do loomwork with because I'm a little psychotic.   It seems like there are quite a few knitting witches, so I assume they are on the Ravelry forum as well. If so, what are your names on there so I can stalk you?   Gwynhwyfar. I know that comes as a total surprise.   Speaking of which, how many Browncoat witches do we have?? And if you are, would you be interested in getting a Kaylee parasol? If not, would you be interested in getting a paper parasol hand painted with your favorite colors?   I've never watched Serenity or Firefly. So if I am a Browncoat, I don't know that I am.   Is there any time during the holidays (or the rest of the round) when you'll be away from home for a significant period and it'd be best not to send anything by mail?   Nope. With the animals, I'll actually never again get to go on vacation. Say it with me -- one dog, two parrots, one budgie, four cats, seven chickens and a snake in a pear tree. Well, maybe not the pear tree.   To make up for the fact that I probably won't be able to send my witchee homebaked goodies, will Tim Tams in any number of varieties be an acceptable replacement?   I don't even know what a Tim Tam is.   Hand beaded jewellery, yay or nay?   See above. As long as it's well-made and sturdy.   Which witches would like hair accessories: clips, scrunchies, hairsticks, headscarves, etc?   Small barrettes and clips are awesome, as are fun elastics of the kind that you would typically see in the hair of an elementary child. (Or a teacher who never grew up.) Large barrettes won't get much use as I tend to prefer my hair down and when I do put it up, I have a butterfly barrette that I'm in love with. *makes grabby hands at the yarn* Wool isn't a great idea -- there is SOME that I can use but it's very hit-or-miss. Right now, I'd probably be thrilled with more batts to play with -- I decided that I need a new hobby so I'm teaching myself to spin with relatively-inexpensive-silk-batts. Also, I'm insane.   Anyone else a total nerd like me and would like DnD/Roleplay stuff (Dice, minis, books, corny tees, etc.)?   No, thank you!   How do people feel about unusual ornaments? As in, for holidays other than Christmas?   Probably not, unless it's something specific that catches my attention. Which makes this hard for someone else to shop for me for!   Question: who would like a pair of handknit socks? Size? Color preference? Cabled, ribbed (for your pleasure), stranded colorwork, etc.?   No, thank you! Being able to knit makes this kinda silly. Being allergic to wool, which seems to be the most popular homemade sock fibre, makes this especially silly. While I love the look of homemade socks, especially the really complicated and pretty things that would look awesome with my sandals, since I wear socks-with-Birkenstocks all the time, this isn't practical. But if you find a way to make it practical or like being insane .. I love toe socks like I love chocolate and my cats. Also I love fun patterned socks and just plain silly socks. Seasonal socks make me happy-dance. Seasonal toe socks would result in loud squeeing.   How does everyone feel about steampunk?   Generally, I can take it or leave it, though every now and then something jumps out at me and I go 'giveme.'   Since we're talking about warm winter wearables, who likes hats? Mittens? Arm warmers?   I love gloves and tend to pick up the inexpensive kind every time I see them because I also lose gloves. I would love to have a NICE pair of those mittens that are gloves, too -- the convertible ones. Scarves, no thank you. Please. They are taking over my life. Fingerless gloves that are stylish enough that I can get away with wearing them to work, especially in a variety of colors so I can be color-coordinated, would be awesome. Those are on my 'make for me' list.   If your witch were to send you cookies, what kind of cookies would you like?   Chocolate with peanut butter chips. That was a hard question. Not. I also like oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips and raisins.   Who likes tshirts? What about homemade tshirts? Like with transfers I made myself....   I'm hard on transfers -- I like the idea, but they don't survive long with me. The parrot finds the edges and peels them off slowly or not-so-slowly, for one.   Would you like to receive ATCs (artist trading cards) or would you prefer something more usable, like bookmarks or something?   Probably bookmarks. Even if I do lose them like I'm scattering deciduous leaves around.   What witch would like a cloak?   I don't need another one -- this would be why I'm pondering making one for MY Witchee -- I'm antsy to make a cloak and need a cloak-victim.

Switch Witch answers -- Christmas '08

What witch would like a cloak? Mmm cloaks!   Would you like to receive ATCs (artist trading cards) or would you prefer something more usable, like bookmarks or something? After thinking about this some more, I am guessing I would use ATC's as bookmarks in my knitting/reading books and perhaps display them in my cubicle at work.   Who likes tshirts? What about homemade tshirts? Like with transfers I made myself.... I like Babydolls! But not t-shirts.   If your witch were to send you cookies, what kind of cookies would you like? I love just about everything -- but no nuts, and no divinity. I *heart* chocolate chip, sugar, snickerdoodle, thumbprint, peanut butter, spritz, lebkuchen, krumkake, etc.   Since we're talking about warm winter wearables, who likes hats? Mittens? Arm warmers? Probably wouldn't wear mittens. Love long wrist warmers! Would love to try arm warmers! I kind of want a kittyville hat. But I already bought yarn to make my own although I suppose I could make one for my housemate instead. I'm making a devil horn hat for my boyfriend... someday.   Question: who would like a pair of handknit socks? Size? Color preference? Cabled, ribbed (for your pleasure), stranded colorwork, etc.? I wear a size US 10 women's shoe. I would LOVE stripey socks (black and purple would be my fav, with black/pink or black/white as back ups. I've totally been eyeing the self striping sock yarn lately.) Otherwise just black is good. Cables and other things are up to the knitter!   How does everyone feel about steampunk? There are some steampunk books on my Amazon withlist and Steampunk jewelry on my Etsy wishlist... I like the art involved. But I tend more towards vampgoth, cybergoth, mopeygoth, etc.   How do people feel about unusual ornaments? As in, for holidays other than Christmas? I don't really have any place to put ornaments but that doesn't stop me from filling my wishlist with NMBC ornaments on Etsy!! I'm hoping to have a tree this year but am not holding my breath.   Anyone else a total nerd like me and would like DnD/Roleplay stuff (Dice, minis, books, corny tees, etc.)? I started playing D&D in 4th grade (early '70's) and then playing Cyperpunk, Call of Cthulhu, Paranoia, etc. I don't really play anymore unless my son (18.5 years) has a campaign he needs tested (but since he lives across the state, this isn't very often.) I love corny tee's from Think Geek, though. Most of my roleplaying is now done online nowadays. YARN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My stash is on flickr and ravelry to give an idea of what I like. I like pretty anything that is not acrylic. Silk, alpaca, llama... I was sent some Wollmeise and it fabulous! And someone also sent me some malabrigo -- omg. so so soft. I need more of this to make a nice cowl and matching wristwarmers!!! Handspun is fab too!! I can do without glitter. Funky art yarn might be ok -- I like the ribbon yarn sometimes if it is really soft. I am all about the texture - I like it smooth, silky, or soft.   Which witches would like hair accessories: clips, scrunchies, hairsticks, headscarves, etc? Anything NMBC, I like. Really wouldn't know how to use hairsticks. Don't need or use scrunchies. I have some clips, but again, I am hopeless. I usually just put my hair back with a headband if it's getting in my way. I have this headband with teeth that I slide in and it holds the hair back pretty well, but they tend to snap after a while. (I must have a big head!)   Hand beaded jewellery, yay or nay? silver, black, purple, blue wire and/or stones/beans -- oh yes please. love gargoyle and skull beads too.   To make up for the fact that I probably won't be able to send my witchee homebaked goodies, will Tim Tams in any number of varieties be an acceptable replacement? Um, yum!   Is there any time during the holidays (or the rest of the round) when you'll be away from home for a significant period and it'd be best not to send anything by mail? Ummm maybe for a weekend. Hard to say. But even if I'm gone, there are still people here at the house to get the mail.   Speaking of which, how many Browncoat witches do we have?? And if you are, would you be interested in getting a Kaylee parasol? If not, would you be interested in getting a paper parasol hand painted with your favorite colors? Not really, sorry.   It seems like there are quite a few knitting witches, so I assume they are on the Ravelry forum as well. If so, what are your names on there so I can stalk you? ravelry = misstwilight   Would you personally rather get handmade jewelry or the beads to make something yourself? handmade jewelry!! I adore wire wrapping and spirals.   What kind of candy/sweet treat would you like to receive? I *love* clove flavored candy -- jellybeans and hard candy sticks. Any kind of snobby chocolate bar is yummy (lately I've been a big fan of Dolfin. And I love the Chai Dagoba bars.) Anything from Cocoa Velvet!!! Lately I am craving pumpkin or pumpkin gingerbread.   Would my potential Witchee be up for some music stuff they'd never heard before if they couldn't understand the words? eh, I am pretty picky about my music.   It's cold outside - what are your favorite drinks to keep yourself warm and cozy? I love drinking chocolate but am too lazy usually to make it. If I had an espesso machine so I could steam milk, I would probably make it more. I also love caramel apple cider, toffee nut lattes, and tea!! If a special occasion: mead, heated spiced mead, buttery nipples, tawny port..   Anyone else have a sudden and unexpected favorite BPAL lately? Yes! I was frottled from the lab with Angeronalia from Yule 2007. When I was decanting for my circle, I couldn't stop sniffing it!! I need to get out my bottle from last year and start using it now that it has aged!!   I love Christmas music even though I'm pagany -- how about you? I really like pop artists doing Christmas music -- Bono, XTC, Sting, Annie Lennox, Erasure, etc.   Do any of you like puzzle books? I love to play puzzles on the computer or especially within computer games (Shivers, 7th Guest, etc.) but not so much in books.   Do you like to cook? if so, what? Would you like things like spices, cookbooks, recipes, tips? Yes, but I have zero room to cook in my "kitchen" or to store anything.   What fashion item or style do you like, but never wear?knee length skirts, stripey tights, high boots. I am too lazy and usually only wear jeans or bdu's unless I'm going to a club.   What is the biggest problem or sad thing in your life? Of course, I mean the saddest or worst thing you can confess here. My biggest gripe... oh god. That I have aspergers and, worse, major depression. Because of it, I lost my really fabulous job as a System Admin and then 911 happened and most of the tech jobs disappeared. I worked from home for seven years. I had to sell my house. Then my boyfriend's mom died and he decided he wants to stay with his dad until his dad passes. So my boyfriend sold his house too. So until his dad passes away, we are living in a MIL apartment in the basement of his dad's house. We have ZERO room to cook or to have most of our belongings. We have one room that the comptuers/tv/couch/kitchen are in, a tiny bathroom, and a small bedroom that can only fit the bed, a nightstand, and a small dresser. The walls have dark wood paneling and the floors are stick down squares of carpet on cement (hardly any padding). I can't even steam clean the carpet without ruining it. The bathroom has holes in the walls and some rot. All of his dad's "artwork" is still covering the walls downstairs even though we've lived there for ... four years? So no room to put any of our things. Very depressing, but at least I have a place to live. (We have plans to put in carpet and redo the bathroom but money has been too tight.) Then we made the mistake of inviting one of my friends to stay with us until she got a job and her own place. Which should have been only a month or two. That was almost a year ago and we are still supporting her financially and... let's just say this place is too small for two people, let alone three. I am extremely stressed out by having no privacy, have missed a ton of work, am always sick, etc. So -- yeah, the living and money situation, not so good.   Do you like honey? Will you like to try creamy honey with black sesame or with cinnamon powder? I love honey! I love trying flavors in small amounts. I don't usually use creamy honey (I just don't eat that many sandwiches...) unless it is in my tea. Right now I have some creamy lavender honey that is fab in tea.   What cartoons did you grow up watching? Any animated shows you still watch? I grew up watching things like Star Blazers, Hanna Barbara, Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo, etc. I still like to watch animation -- I just saw Bolt last weekend. I love Pixar! I have some Disney movies on dvd (Bambi, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Lion King), Nightmare Before Christmas (of course!), The Corpse Bride, James and the Giant Peach, some Anime (Vampire Hunter D, Ranma 1/2)... what else do I have. Toy Story, Bugs Life, Shrek, Wallace and Gromit...   Who are your forum friends, person or people your witch can contact for ideas? You could try contacting Pixiepetal on the forums. She is currently staying with us. Right now we are not getting along so well though.   Do you like baskets, jars and other interesting containers? Filled or Empty? I like jars and interesting containers (filled, preferably) but unless they are filled with useful things, I don't really have any room at all. Most of my belongings are packed up in storage since moving into our current place.   Houseplants and/or things to put them in: thoughts? I am thinking that although they rock, houseplants would be too costly to ship. Same with things to put them in. I would like some more spider plants but as I live in a basement, I am afraid they would just die again. I have lucky bamboo and a geranium at work. At home (inside) I have a corn plant, christmas cactus, wandering jew, pothos, and a few unidentified plants. Most of them are from my grandmother's estate. My spider plants that moved with me from my other house all perished. I really don't have much room for any more plants.   Chia Pet, do you need one? No thanks.   Boxes, baskets, etc.? I love wooden boxes, especially of a size for perfume bottles!! Baskets are not as preferred -- I have a ton of baskets that don't see any use.   What jewelry are you wearing now? What jewelry do you wear everyday-or do you change jewelry all the time? Right now I am wearing my Carnival Phoenix locket, a pair of amethyst earrings (my boyfriend had them made especially for me as a Valentine's Day gift), and a pair of diamond stud earrings. I pretty much wear these every day. If I'm getting dressed for a club I'll usually add some rings or knuckle armor pieces and maybe a bracelet. When I am wearing shorts (ie, summer), I usually wear an anklet too.   Would you like handmade piece of calligraphy as a gift? Sure!   What is the weirdest and/or most practical thing you are not buying for yourself right now? The thing that you probably should be buying, but have been putting off in lieu of something else? I am being bad by NOT purchasing new contacts or glasses (my glasses are currently broken and I have maybe one pair of contacts left before I'm out.) I have been putting it off because... I am broke! And perfume is more important for some reason!   How about a short - or longer - piece of fanfic? Sure, why not?   Which witches would want Bpal boxes? Or imp cases? I am set for imp cases but I am out of room in my bottle boxes. Although if someone decorated an imp case for me that would also rock -- I just have blue and smoke colored ammo boxes (100 count) that are semi-transparent.   Do you read graphic novels/comics? Which ones? Sandman! Not much else.   Are you planning on buying anything off your BPAL wishlist during the round? Erm. I might have to get the Arcana holiday special one that is on there. But planning, no. If something goes up for a really good price on eBay or the forums that isn't to say I wouldn't jump at it!   Literary erotica. Who doesn't love it? I prefer more femdom bdsm erotica. pony play is good too. The boyfriend goes nuts over such things!   What are 3 places that you'd like to visit, or re-visit? I really want to go to the UK. Would love to go back to Italy or Spain. Maybe Greece?   So for all witches of the shimmying types- would you like tassel belts/jingle belts/ ect and if so, how big are your hips? Not really into the shimmying.   How do you feel about Heifer International? Or do you have other favorite charities not mentioned in your application? Not sure what Heifer Intl is and too lazy to look it up right now. Favorite charities would be PBRC, Bad Rap, or any other Pit Bull rescue/education charities.   Favorite animals? Least favorite? For images? I love bats, dolphins, unicorns, thestrals, ravens/crows/corbies, amstaff/pit bulls, friesians, ferrets, etc. For having as companions, I have loved rats, ferrets, amstaff/pit bulls, horses. I have fantasies about having a talking pet raven but not sure the reality would live up to it -- I don't like cleaning cages!! Which is one of the reasons I no longer have rats or ferrets. Least favorite animals?? ummm do insects count?   How do you like your chocolate? White, milk, bittersweet, as dark as possible? Plain, with flavoring, with chunks of stuff in? Fairly traditional, or weird and experimental? I prefer milk, bittersweet, and dark dark dark. Although I did just have some pretty decent white chocolate (a skeleton, served in pieces, in his coffin) from Moonstruck Chocolates. I love chocolate with almonds and raisins. I love chocolate with orange flavor. I love chocolate with sweet curry & coconut (ie, Vosges Naga bar or the Dolfin Hot Masala bar.) The Dolfin bar with jasmine tea is to die for. Dagoba Chai bar is one of my favorites. The bacon Vosges is not horrible but not really my cup of tea. What I *don't* especially like are things like Hershey bars or Palmer's "chocolate". I am a snob, what can I say?? I will lower myself by consuming kit kats, peanut butter cups, 100 grand bars, or other such small bars if they are around on Halloween. Whole Foods has some awesome caramel and chocolate truffles that just melt in your mouth! I am pretty sure they are the Whole Foods brand (yes they are, I finally looked.) Also: I would like to make a plug for www.cocoavelvet.us -- my friend's chocolate company. Their chocolates are SO. GOOD.   Question for the Class: Favorite Musical? Wicked, Sweeney Todd, NMBC (it has music!). I use the term loosely. I also like some classics -- Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, Willie Wonka... I really like some of the music from Phantom, Cats, and other ALW productions.   Do you like Shakespeare? Which plays? Yes. Much Ado About Nothing.   If you are a fan, who were your favorite Buffy and Angel characters? Not a fan. Don't watch a lot of tv at all, actually.   On nut intolerance - does it include things like almond/coconut oil bases and essential oils in perfume oils, skincare products, scented candles and the like? I don't have a nut intolerance.   Are there any witchy type supplies you're in need of, or would like to try etc.? Herbs, smudge sticks, resins, tarot/oracle cards, incense burners, pretty tools, stuff like that? I can always use herbs/spices/things that are good for incorporating into soap for color, texture, or other properties. I use things like poppy seeds, rose hips, rose petals, lavender flowers, oatmeal, sea salt of all types, maple sugar, raw sugar of all types, clays, etc.   Anyone into physical activities? For instance- I'm training to become a Combat Archer in the SCA, and something I would use would be an Archers glove...is there anything you do as a sport/hobby in which you might need equipment? Oh! I received a WII fit for my birthday -- just the balance board. I would love yoga mat and other accessories for it.   Who's your favorite playwright? I'm an unwashed heathen who didn't attend university and isn't into high faluting sort of things. No, really, I like plays.. but I am bad with names.   Have you (or maybe the younguns in your family) been exposed to the Webkinz craze? No and no thank you!   Any favorite cartoon characters? Disney, Sanrio, etc? Eeyore, The Tick, Earthworm Jim (Peter Puppy!), Bambi, Jack Skellington, Bolt, Wallace and Gromit, Spirit (horse), Ren & Stimpy..   Do you prefer arm warmers to the wrist, to the base of the fingers, or half fingered? I prefer longish wrist warmers -- like to mid arm. And half fingered. I haven't ever had arm warmers but it seems like it would be cumbersome to have things going over my elbow. I might feel claustrophobic. Although I guess if there were t-shirt material it would be better? They look so awesome that I lust over them.   What's one luxury item you want to pamper yourself with but haven't yet? I am so wanting to try the Villainess smooch, whipped, and perfumes. And Blood Drops perfumes and other fun things. I have majorly dry hands during winter.   What's your favorite texture? mmm... For tactile -- something really soft. Suede and suede silk. My dog's ears.   Alright witches, who is ordering the Moon of the Terrible oil? *raises hand* Since last December I have ordered every single lunacy. Usually two or more.   Does your forum name have a special significance? Refer to something or someone you admire? Reflect your interests? Come on, spill! I have used the name Twilight or Twilight Eyes since 1986. Been active online since 1984 or so. Twilight Eyes is from a book by D. Koontz .. someone with Twilight Eyes had foreknowledge of sorts and, of course, purple eyes. I had purple contacts for quite a while, starting in 1986 or so. Since then, most people know me as Twilight and my business name incorporates Twilight into it. I am not very happy about the Twilight series stealing "my" name!!   I wanted to ask a question: are there any rare (or even uber-rare) scents that you'd really like to try? I want to know everyone's BPAL holy grail! Pumpkin King, Cinnamon Sugar Cookies (? - from the DD Trunk Show), Orange, Dark Chocolate, Mitzvah, Monster Bait: Closet, F54. I had a sniffie of Gypsy Queen but I would really like a testable amount. Same with Storyville. I really really want a bottle of Underpants.   What would your reaction be to receiving something like this? A Batsirani doll Sorry, but they are very much not my sort of thing and I have very limited space. I don't have room for all of the things that I love insanely let alone for other things.   What is one REALLY expensive, completely outrageous thing you would LOVE to get but totally don't expect to ever get from anyone? A Friesian!!! Or a Lusitano, Warlander, or Andulsian...   Do you like coffee mugs? Travel or stay at home? How big? Do you like ones from Starbucks? I have too many! If anyone needs anything from sbux for their witchee, please give me a shout.   If you drink coffee, do you like whole bean coffee or prefer ground? What grind? What roast (mild, medium, bold, extra bold)? Do you like flavored coffee? I would love to try whole coffee beans from your local coffee places. I prefer espresso roast or bolds. I love flavored coffee too -- Orange Chocolate or Black Forest! I love Cinnamon Hazelnut too.   Do you like tea? What kinds of tea (green, red, white, black, decaf, herbal infusions)? Feel free to get specific on brands and tea types. Loose or bagged? Do you need any kind of tea accessories? Pots/cozys/presses/strainers? I love all kinds of tea but especially jasmine, chai, and black breakfast-y teas. I like both loose and bagged - I use a gold foil filter but would really like a bodium tea pot (it has a little strainer insert for loose leaf that you can remove after brewing) or one of the tea "presses" that spits the leaves out at the bottom so they don't steep after the recommended time. (I don't think it is really a press - you aren't supposed to "press" tea like you do coffee.) I have an iron tea pot somewhere but I think it is packed up. I really wish I could find it. I welcome all sorts of your favorite teas.   What is your favorite hot chocolate or drinking chocolate? My favorite is the Parisian from Vosges, or the Double Chocolate from Ghiradelli. Scharffenberger has some lovely cocoa as well that I used to use exclusively to make mochas at home but that and the Vosges are too expensive to buy all the time. I saw some awesome looking single origin drinking chocolates at Whole Foods yesterday -- I might have to go back and check them out when I'm awake. I welcome your favorite hot cocoa or anything you think I might enjoy.   Do you need any decanting supplies? Pipettes? Vials? How about any wand caps? Roller bottles? Some spray bottles (for oils mixed with alcohol?) I would love some purple roller bottles and more small atomizers!   if you were to receive a hand-knitted item, what color(s) would you prefer AND are there any types of yarn that you just cannot handle (e.g. wool, llama, etc.) I love black, purples, blues... look at my etsy list and the yarns that I drool over for color iteas. My favorite scarf is a black mohair knitted doublestrand with a purple/blue silky ribbon. I wear it everywhere. I have some purple pastaza wrist warmers but the pastaza seems too itchy for my wrists -- I think it is because they are breaking out from perfume sensitivity and that makes them wool sensitive too. I have dreams of knitting a cowl from malabrigo worsted merino, a kittyville hat (superwash wool is fine), and silk wristwarmers. I have my eye on the snake belly gauntlets from knitty and other arm warmers but I am too busy to make anything for myself! I am making things for everyone else! So yes, I would love to receive knitted things. But if it going on my wrists, no scratchy wool! And please, no acrylic material at all. It makes me cringe.   How do you feel about Lush? Anything you want to try? I have access to many things I loooove lush. I love just about everything except for their lip stuff.   Do you want to try the Will Call only Champagne scents? I was lucky enough to have someone pick up some for me to share, so no worries, I am covered.   Would you please share your favorite e-card site? I am so horrible with e-card sites. I need to know your favorite so I can steal it for my own!   Do you play on-line games? Which one and which serever? Do you need any funds/equipment/help adventuring? I play Ultima Online on the Pacific shard. I also play Puzzle Pirates on the Viridian Ocean. I have everything I could ever use or want in UO. I rarely play puzzle pirates unless I am bored at work.   Do you have traditional holiday movies you like to watch? I usually do NMBC a few times from October to December. Because it's both Halloweenie AND Christmas! I wish I had the original Rudolph, Frosty, Nestor, Charlie Brown, and other animated shows I used to watch every year when growing up. I think I have way more Halloween traditional movies than Christmas!! I adore "Gremlins", "Elf", "Scrooged", "Die Hard". I've never seen the "Muppet's Christmas Carol". I finally saw the "Polar Express" for the first time last year. Never seen "It's a Wonderful Life". Or "Miracle on 34th Street". Or "A Christmas Story." Srsly. I need to expand my horizons big time.   What are your "guilty pleasures" type movies? That you really secretly like but don't like to admit to it? *cough* I like things like "13 going on 30", "Hitch", "The Wedding Singer", "Never Been Kissed", etc. Ok, not so goth... but I can't help it. I also cry at the DROP of a hat, especially if it involves dogs. I cried like a little girl during "Sweet Home Alabama" when Reese was in the pet cemetary talking to Bear at his grave. I just about cried multiple times during Bolt because Pet Rescue and abandonment is a huge button for me. I also loved the newer "Moulin Rouge". I really like dorky movies like "Zoolander" and "Don't Mess with the Zohan" ...   Do you collect anything...BESIDES BPALs. I am a PACK RAT. I collect gargoyles and grotesques, unicorns, NMBC stuff (especially the cookie jars), candles (or you would THINK I collect them -- I have about 20 3-wick candles stacked by the wall and 1 huge wooden chest full of votives, pillars, and dinner candles, and another steamer trunk full of votives, tealights, and jar candles. I love candles, I used to be a PartyLite representative, I've worked for Sweet Spirit Candles as a chandler and I still make my own candles at home! -- don't ask about all of the boxes of PartyLite candle holders and accessories...srsly.) I collect Starbucks City Mugs, Starbucks Bears, books(!!!!!), yarn (someday I'll get around to using my stash, really!), neodymium glass (especially depression era -- Tiffin Twilight, Heisey Alexandrite, Fostoria Wisteria, etc. -- this is glass that is a lavender color under incandescent light but turns blue under florescent. I even have a few PartyLite candle holders that are neodymium), I love ravens, fleidermaus', pit bulls, ferrets... I would like to be able to collect more artwork but I have no place to hang anything on the walls right now. All of my framed artwork is living in storage, along with my gargoyles, unicorns, curio cabinets, books, mugs, bears, neodymium, etc. Oh, and I have a ton of rubber stamps and stamping accessories but I prefer more obscure and not horribly girly rubber stamps -- gargoyles, pit bulls, horses, unicorns (my favorite is my punk unicorn), bats, ravens, etc. Although I do have some cutesy stuff too.   Anyone a fan of Goddess art? I love images of women, in beautiful poses, strong women, powerful women (No- Not Hilary ROFL) I like dark, vampire types too, not *too* dark- okay for general consumption type art too. I have a hand made vase that has a goddess depiction but I purchased it mostly because it was purple and I loved the swirly handles. I don't really collect art of women -- although I really do like some of the fantasy art like Amy Brown and I have some really old Patrick Nagel prints from the '80s that are in storage that I would sell in a heartbeat if I could get anything for them. I would love to start collecting more BDSM (femdom) art but I think I would prefer men in submissive poses. I wouldn't mind if there was a woman in there as well, but I prefer mostly faceless art (if they are photographs) if that makes sense.   Anyone else a Luis Royo fan? I like some of the more masculine art, especially with the horses.   What are your favorite websites (i.e., the ones you visit every day, or almost every day)? ravelry, bpal.org, facebook, etsy, flickr, livejournal, ebay, gmail...   This is kind of a getting-to-know-you-type-thingie, but I always find it illuminating--what's on your computer desktop? Images? Color scheme? I usually have something like stonehenge, solar eclipse, sweeny todd, nmbc, stardust movie backgrounds (from the movie website!), a friesian, my dogs, or something else near and dear. Right now work is NMBC and home is a blaze of different blue and black colors. I always use the "Lilac" color scheme on any computer (windoze computers) that I have a profile on.   Would you be interested in some knitted wire jewelry, like this? OOOH SHINY! But not dangly earrings, I would never wear them.   If you were to attend Hogwarts, into which House would you be sorted? Probably Griffindor or Ravenclaw. How can we know for sure! Only the sorting hat would tell us! I like Ravenclaw's colors better.   Do you have a personal 'Good Luck' charm? Maybe you have a goddess figure to remind you of your Inner Goddess, or maybe you have a beautiful Cross to represent your faith...Or maybe you wear a Hand of Fatimah for protection....That kind of thing. I usually have a wedjat (wadjet/eye of horus/eye of the moon/eye of ra/udjat) around (bookmark, necklace, earring.) I also have many ankhs ("nile key", giggle) of all shapes and sizes.   Question for the class: How do you feel about winter-themed but not really holiday type decorations? Things like snowflakes and fake icicles and the like? Love! I love snowflakes! Especially snow flake cookie cutters. Dang, that is another thing that I kind of collect -- interesting and unusual cookie cutters! I have a monster truck (my boyfriend is a monster truck driver so when he is lucky, I make them cookies!), unicorns, lizards, dogs, bones... and I've always wanted snowflake ones but it is one of those things I always put on christmas wishlists but don't ever get. hee. (Not a huge priority, especially since I rarely make cookies anyway.) (See, I'm a pack rat!)   I'd like to know wrist size, circumference just below the elbow, and most importantly; what kind of fiber can you tolerate/not tolerate. Please be more specific than non-itchy wool. Alpaca, merino sheep's wool, silk, acrylic, stainless steel, you name it. Wrists, 7". Circumference below elbow, 11.5". I can't tolerate very many things on my arms/wrists -- super soft merino MAYBE (I haven't tried any on my wrists), baby or supersoft alpaca, bamboo, silk... lately my arms and wrists have been super irritated and itchy (probably from perfume!) I can not stand acrylics -- they make a funny noise and just touching them makes me squick out. I love noro kureyon but sadly not on my wrists.   Question to all the knitters out there, what size knitting needles do you use the most?: Probably a 10. I used my 50's for the first time over the weekend to knit a throw blanket. Took four hours. Sweet!!! I'll be making more of those!!   Keychain: Car key, house key (my key has Eeyore graphics on it), siren logo, and alarm fob.   What's your favorite animal? that is soooo hard to answer!! I love ferrets (especially silvers), rats (blue hooded! elephant ears!), bats, ravens, horses (especially friesians), my dogs (AmStaffs, blue is my favorite)... dolphins!   Do you speak any languages besides English? How fluent are you? Would you be interested in literature in a foreign laguage - phrase books, fiction, childrens stories? I took German and ASL in school but I'm not very fluent in either. I've always kind of wanted to learn Welsh and Latin. Maybe Children's stories in a foreign language would be my speed -- but probably too hard!!   Do you like mythical/fantastical creatures? Which ones? Heck yeah. Unicorns (not cutesy necessarily, although I have a ton of the Lennox "Love's" unicorn collection), gargoyles/grotesques, hippocampus, hippogriff, griffin, dragons to a lesser extent, thestrals, etc. Anything in horse form or close to is love!!   Do you like caramels like coconut lime? Salted? I don't think I've ever met a caramel I didn't like. Lately I've been very fond of anise caramels but am dieing to try ones such as gingerbread, egg nog, earl grey, lavender, rose, etc.   Who's a Disney fan? Cartoons, theme parks, or just general stuff? I have to admit that I do love going to theme parks, including disneyland. I have a special place in my heart for Bambi (I always loved deer and the Felix Salten books, although ripped to shreds by Disney, were among my favs), Eeyore (aspie! total aspie!), and of course NMBC. I think my fav "newer" (I still think of them as newer) animated disney films are The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, The Lion King, and Aladdin. And Mulan is ok. And of course I love POTC!! Some of my friends are total Disney fanatics and know EVERYTHING about the park... I just shake my head. I have been to Club 33 because I have a friend who has a membership, that is probably the crowning point of my Disneyland trips.   Who is your favorite villain of all-time? Mmm villians!!! I always loved Maleficent.. because black, purple, and dragon FtW!!!! Snape.. because Alan Rickman is hot as Snape.   Do you use candles much? If so, do you like unusual, pretty, funny or weird candles? Scented or unscented? Any particular type? I loooove candles. I like highly scented candles but not ones that will make me sneeze, so not especially synthetic smelling... if that makes any sense. I use mostly votives and pillars. I prefer my votives to liquify completely while burning so that it consumes all of the wax and I don't have to scrape! Pilllars I prefer to be "huggable" so again all of the wax is consumed. I don't like the ones that are too hard and crack when hugged or that make a big hole in the center. (I tend to burn them for 1 hour per inch of diameter so that they liquify all the way to the edges.) I am a part time chandler but without a workshop at the moment. I love intention candles too. I have been really wanting to try candles from Big Dipper Wax Works -- a local Seattle beeswax candle company. Someone that works there, Fleur, adopted one of my foster bullies. He gets to go play in the chandlery while Fleur works! I always see their candles at Whole Foods but I'm usually too broke to purchase. Rapture or Rejuvination aromatherapy or just plain honey beeswax is awesome. The holiday "spice" looks awesome. Votives, pillars, glass, tins, what-eva.     Do you like incense? Any particular type or scent? I have sooo much incense but I can't burn it in the house. Boyfriend allergic. So I never use it anymore. *weeps*

Winter SW Questions!

1/11 How often do untested BPAL scents work on you? (excluding notes you already know will go bad / you dislike) It's honestly a mix. Lots of times I will find things that work out nicely but aren't quite my style, or I wouldn't wear it enough. But that doesn't stop me from trying! I'm up for trying just about anything once, and for that reason, I love getting imps and decants!   1/10 What does everyone want out of the new update? Would you be interested in some knitted wire jewelry, like this? Possibly This is kind of a getting-to-know-you-type-thingie, but I always find it illuminating--what's on your computer desktop? Images? Color scheme? Just the background it came with. Usually I'm super quick to change it, but the back ground is black with a pretty grey flower design so I kept it.   12/15 What do you collect...besides BPAL? I love notebooks. I can never get enough notebooks   12/14 Anyone a fan of Goddess art? Some spray bottles (for oils mixed with alcohol?) Sure, I wouldn't say no to some pipettes vials and wand caps.   12/12 I wanted to ask a question: are there any rare (or even uber-rare) scents that you'd really like to try? Well sure! I'm interested in trying all sorts of stuffs. The last few on my WL under the As If category would probably be the rarest. I don't think I have a holy grail sort of scent though, just all things I'd be curious to try! Does your forum name have a special significance? Refer to something or someone you admire? Reflect your interests? Come on, spill! I wish I had some super cool reason, but I love fall, and I'm often in a daze, so it seems to work!   12/11 What's your favorite texture? Satin, warm and cozy, and super soft textures What's one luxury item you want to pamper yourself with but haven't yet? um... honestly I'm not sure... No, not really, I'm not particularly athletic. Are there any witchy type supplies you're in need of, or would like to try etc.? Who doesn't love it? All for it Are you planning on buying anything off your BPAL wishlist during the round I don't plan on buying any, but I do have a few swaps going on, so I'm not sure what I'll be getting, but it's all gravy! Do you read graphic novels/comics? Which ones? Not really Which witches would want Bpal boxes? Or imp cases? I got a lovely box last round How about a short - or longer - piece of fanfic? sure What is the weirdest and/or most practical thing you are not buying for yourself right now? The thing that you probably should be buying, but have been putting off in lieu of something else? um... just about everything! If so, what are your names on there so I can stalk you? I don't know how to knit Is there any time during the holidays (or the rest of the round) when you'll be away from home for a significant period and it'd be best not to send anything by mail? It's December Already?

It's been 4 months and 23 days since I first started OCM. I'm still at it and...well...there's still nothing really to report. No breakouts or blocked pores, no unusual changes or problems, and despite the dry weather my oil mixture and routine has stayed the same. The only thing that has changed is the moisturizer I use in the evening after cleansing.   During the warmer months I used Alba Botanica Aloe & Green Tea Oil-Free moisturizer, which I still use in the morning, but now I use Alba's Jasmine & Vitamin E Moisture Cream as well. It's rich enough to keep the dryness at bay during the cold season, but light enough that it absorbs quickly and doesn't leave an icky residue on my face. I love the stuff, but it's a little expensive at $16.95 for a 3 oz. jar. It lasts a long time, though, and considering the oils for my OCM mixture are petty inexpensive I guess I shouldn't feel so bad paying a little more for a good night-time winter moisturizer.   Speaking of the cost of OCM: Considering what I spent initially on all the oils and the dropper bottles for storage, the per month cost for OCM over a four month period is roughly around $8.25. Even my green tea and witch hazel toner blend is just a little over a dollar per month. I'd almost like to work out how much I spent over the years on other skin care products that didn't work out so well or failed miserably, but I'm pretty sure I'd be sick for days just thinking about it.

Switch Witch Winter 2008-09 Q&A

12/15 What do you collect...besides BPAL? Oh, good grief. A million things. Comics and books. Action figures (mostly from comics and anime). Postcards, movie tickets, and other memorabilia. I'm desperately trying not to develop an addiction to iitala glass birds, but a friend from Finland brought one back for me from her recent trip home to visit the family. And I can get them at a local store in my city...   12/14 Anyone a fan of Goddess art? Love it.   Anyone else a Luis Royo fan? Yes, I like his work.   What are your favorite websites (i.e., the ones you visit every day, or almost every day)? Well, this one, obviously. Also these (although actually, I mostly watch these via various feed readers): http://purefelinity.com http://dragcave.net http://mcsweeneys.net http://cuteoverload.com http://warrenellis.com http://ursalavernon.com http://twitter.com http://postsecret.com (weekly visit)   Do you want to try the Will Call only Champagne scents? Oh yeah. With serious desperation.   Would you please share your favorite e-card site? I like BlueMountain.com and Care2's ecards.   Do you play on-line games? Which one and which server? Do you need any funds/equipment/help adventuring? Already answered part of this before. I can always use help with mats (tailoring and enchanting). I'm just 10 points away from leveling out tailoring, but I have a looooong way to go in enchanting.   Do you have traditional holiday movies you like to watch? My favorite holiday movie is Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas I also love A Christmas Story and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.   What are your "guilty pleasures" type movies? That you really secretly like but don't like to admit to it? Only You with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, Jr. Those lul-inducing "Sci-Fi Original Pictures."   How do you feel about Lush? Anything you want to try? Delphinine enabled me last round, and there's SO much I want to try! I will also need another bar of SJG soon.   How do you feel about home made lip balm, salt or sugar scrubs, soap, bath salts, etc? I would love some! I like all kinds of different lip balm flavors, and there's a link in my signature to favorite notes.   If you were to receive a hand-knitted item, what color(s) would you prefer AND are there any types of yarn that you just cannot handle (e.g. wool, llama, etc.)? I would like something in purple or green maybe. I try to stick to natural fibers (cotton, wool, etc.) because sometimes synthetics screw with my skin.   12/13 What is one REALLY expensive, completely outrageous thing you would LOVE to get but totally don't expect to ever get from anyone? I'm hardcore lusting after one of the new MacBook Pros.   Do you like coffee mugs? Travel or stay at home? How big? Do you like ones from Starbucks? I do like coffee mugs, both travel and regular. I especially like travel mugs that are actually ceramic. The hubby gave me one for our anniversary, and it's really neat. Keeps the coffee/tea warm, doesn't spill, and still feels like a "real" coffee mug, if you know what I mean.   If you drink coffee, do you like whole bean coffee or prefer ground? What grind? What roast (mild, medium, bold, extra bold)? Do you like flavored coffee? I prefer whole bean, fair trade whenever possible. I like all different roasts, and flavored too.   Do you like tea? What kinds of tea (green, red, white, black, decaf, herbal infusions)? Feel free to get specific on brands and tea types. Loose or bagged? Do you need any kind of tea accessories? Pots/cozys/presses/strainers? I love tea! All kinds of tea (but nothing with lavender). I prefer loose. And yes! I need accessories. I've been trying to find a good infuser for my loose tea, but keep winding up with these kinda crappy ones.   What is your favorite hot chocolate or drinking chocolate? Do you need Vegan or no? I don't really have a favorite brand. I especially like hazelnut hot chocolate if I can find it. Don't need vegan.   Do you need any decanting supplies? Pipettes? Vials? How about any wand caps? Roller bottles? Some spray bottles (for oils mixed with alcohol?) I really need wand caps.   12/12 Alright witches, who is ordering the Moon of the Terrible oil? I am trying to resist.   I wanted to ask a question: are there any rare (or even uber-rare) scents that you'd really like to try? Storyville and Mabon are at the top of my stuff-I'll-probably-never-get-to-try list.   Does your forum name have a special significance? Refer to something or someone you admire? Reflect your interests? Come on, spill! No, it's just my name (short for Camellia).   12/11 What's your favorite texture? Velvet. In general, though, I love soft and snuggly things.   What's one luxury item you want to pamper yourself with but haven't yet? I would love to try some Lush buttercreams, shower gels, and emotibombs.   Do you prefer arm warmers to the wrist, to the base of the fingers, or half fingered? Half-fingered or to the base of the fingers. I need to keep my hands warm yet still be able to do things like type.   Any favorite cartoon characters? Disney, Sanrio, etc? Chococat, Simon's Cat, Eeyore   Have you (or maybe the younguns in your family) been exposed to the Webkinz craze? No idea what that is.   Who's your favorite playwright? I love theatre, but don't have enough opportunities locally to go to plays to really have a favorite playwright.   Anyone into physical activities? For instance- I'm training to become a Combat Archer in the SCA, and something I would use would be an Archers glove...is there anything you do as a sport/hobby in which you might need equipment? I'm heavily into yoga (I've been practicing for 4 years now) and I could really use a couple new blocks (example), since my cats clawed my old pair to ribbons. I'd also love a meditation cushion of some sort.   I just started doing a serious fitness regimen with a friend who's a personal trainer, but I really don't need anything for that. At least not yet.   Are there any witchy type supplies you're in need of, or would like to try etc.? Herbs, smudge sticks, resins, tarot/oracle cards, incense burners, pretty tools, stuff like that? I can always use another incense burner.   On nut intolerance - does it include things like almond/coconut oil bases and essential oils in perfume oils, skincare products, scented candles and the like? I don't have any nut allergies, and I like nutty-scented things.   If you are a fan, who were your favorite Buffy and Angel characters? Spike   Do you like Shakespeare? Which plays? Yes. I tend to prefer the comedies, but also love Macbeth and Hamlet.   12/10 Question for the Class: Favorite Musical? Sweeney Todd, but I should note that as a rule, I am not a huge fan of musicals.   How do you like your chocolate? White, milk, bittersweet, as dark as possible? Plain, with flavoring, with chunks of stuff in? Fairly traditional, or weird and experimental? I like all varieties of chocolate, and I'm very adventurous about it (and almost all foods, really).   Favorite animals? Least favorite? I LOVE animals. Practically all of them. As I'm sure my witch gathered from my questionnaire, I'm a cat lover, but honestly, I really just love animals. The only ones I really don't like are snakes and spiders (I have a deep and abiding horror of spiders).   How do you feel about Heifer International? Or do you have other favorite charities not mentioned in your application? Heifer is a great charity.   So for all witches of the shimmying types - would you like tassel belts/jingle belts/ ect and if so, how big are your hips? Sadly, I haven't shimmied in awhile. I was taking classes a couple of years ago, but my teacher's day job got a bit too busy, and she had to quit teaching.   12/9 What are 3 places that you'd like to visit, or re-visit? Tuscany - The hubby and I spent our honeymoon there, and we it. Can't wait to go back. Spain Argentina   Literary erotica. Who doesn't love it? Like it.   Are you planning on buying anything off your BPAL wishlist during the round? Probably not, at least until after the holidays.   Do you read graphic novels/comics? Which ones? LOVE comics! Favorites include Sandman (and anything by Gaiman), Hellblazer, Transmetropolitan (and really, ANYTHING by Warren Ellis), Planetary, Fell, Fables, Y: The Last Man, Watchmen (and again, anything by Alan Moore), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, 30 Days of Night, Desolation Jones... I'm sure there's some stuff I'm forgetting. I really want to check out Poison Elves and House of Mystery. If my witch is into comics, though, I'm happy to check out anything she/he thinks I might like.   Which witches would want Bpal boxes? Or imp cases? That would be really nice. My shelf is full now.   How about a short - or longer - piece of fanfic? Not really into fanfic.   What is the weirdest and/or most practical thing you are not buying for yourself right now? The thing that you probably should be buying, but have been putting off in lieu of something else? I desperately need to replace my contacts (one of the last pair tore, so right now I have none). Also, a laundry hamper with a lid (to keep pets out). I just can't seem to find the time to go pick up either of these.   Would you like handmade piece of calligraphy as a gift? That would be awesome.   What jewelry are you wearing now? What jewelry do you wear everyday-or do you change jewelry all the time? My wedding ring (which looks like this; I love it!), a handmade amethyst ring with a silver band that my mom gave me, my CD scent locket, amber plugs, silver hoop earrings. I wear the wedding ring, one of my pairs of plugs (I have amber, jade, and a carved wood pair), and the little silver hoops every day. I wear one of my lockets almost every day.   Boxes, baskets, etc.? I can always use more decorative storage objects.   Chia Pet, do you need one? I would undoubtedly kill it. Or the cats would eat it. I do best with plants that live outside.   Houseplants and/or things to put them in: thoughts? Again, I'm not very good with them, and anything I have has to be pet-safe (my cats absolutely will chew on the leaves).   Do you like baskets, jars and other interesting containers? Filled or Empty? Sure. Either filled or empty is ok with me.   12/8 Who are your forum friends, person or people your witch can contact for ideas? Ravyn1 is probably my closest forum buddy. We have a lot of common interests, and appear to be scent twins.   What cartoons did you grow up watching? Any animated shows you still watch? Um... I know I liked the Smurfs. And Thundercats. I love Batman cartoons still, and the Justice League. I'm also a HUGE anime fan. Some faves are Vampire Hunter D, the second Vampire Hunter D (whose name escapes me right now), My Neighbor Totoro, The Cat Returns, Spirited Away, Millenium Actress, Blood: The Last Vampire.... I know there are more, but can't think right now.   Do you like honey? Will you like to try creamy honey with black sesame or with cinnamon powder? Yum! That sounds awesome.   What is the biggest problem or sad thing in your life? Of course, I mean the saddest or worst thing you can confess here. I would say dealing with my hubby's ex-wife. There's a whole long history of crap that she's done, but suffice to say she is not friendly. Last year she moved with my stepson to Miami, which is 13 hours from where we live (before, they lived two hours away). This is extremely hard on my husband, and yesterday we found out that she's refusing to bring him for the holidays this year, as she is obligated to do by the custody agreement. So yeah. That pretty much sucks.   What fashion item or style do you like, but never wear? Heels. I love them. I have several sexy pairs. I almost never have any excuse to wear them (and not much in the way of clothes to wear them with).   Do you like to cook? if so, what? Would you like things like spices, cookbooks, recipes, tips? I'm not much of a cook, sadly. There are a few things I can make well, but my hubby does most of the cooking. I do like spices and such.   Do any of you like puzzle books? I love logic puzzles.   12/6 I love Christmas music even though I'm pagany -- how about you? There are a few Xmas songs I like. Carol of the Bells is always a fave, and anything Celtic-y. Of course, I'm dying to have A Very Scary Solstice, since someone posted a link here.   Anyone else have a sudden and unexpected favorite BPAL lately? I wasn't sure I would like Snow White, but then someone swapped me a decant of Snow White 2007, and I love it. Dying to get 2008 now.   It's cold outside - what are your favorite drinks to keep yourself warm and cozy? Cider, tea and cocoa are my favorites. Peppermint Mochas from Sbux are always tasty too.   Would my potential Witchee be up for some music stuff they'd never heard before if they couldn't understand the words? Definitely.   12/5 What kind of candy/sweet treat would you like to receive? Chocolate is always welcome.   Would you personally rather get handmade jewelry or the beads to make something yourself? I'm happy with either.   12/3 - 12/4 Since we're talking about warm winter wearables, who likes hats? Mittens? Arm warmers? I love them! And I've really been dying for a pair of fingerless gloves/armwarmers since the weather turned cold where I live.   If your witch were to send you cookies, what kind of cookies would you like? I like all kinds of cookies, really. I'm particularly fond of cookies with toffee, and my hubby is crazy about white chocolate macadamia nut, which I also like.   Who likes tshirts? What about homemade tshirts? Like with transfers I made myself.... Sure! That would be awesome.   Another question! How does everyone feel about steampunk? Steampunk is . I'm lusting after this t-shirt.   Question: who would like a pair of handknit socks? Size? Color preference? Cabled, ribbed (for your pleasure), stranded colorwork, etc.? I would love a pair of handknit socks. Shoe size is 7, so you know, whatever that translates to. Cabled or ribbed is nice, stranded colorwork is very nice.   So, question all - how do people feel about unusual ornaments? As in, for holidays other than Christmas? Sure, that would be neat.   How do people feel about cat hair? I have 9 cats and a dog. 'Nuff said.   Anyone else a total nerd like me and would like DnD/Roleplay stuff (Dice, minis, books, corny tees, etc.)? Sure. Especially dice. I'm always looking for new dice in neat colors. Sadly, not a knitter or similar. Just not my skill. I really do need jewelry fittings, though. Clasps, c-rings, settings, anything like that is much appreciated.   Which witches would like hair accessories: clips, scrunchies, hairsticks, headscarves, etc? That would be great. I am especially fond of scarves and clips. I used to love hairsticks, but my hair isn't long enough to put up at the moment.   Hand beaded jewellery, yay or nay? Yay!   To make up for the fact that I probably won't be able to send my witchee homebaked goodies, will Tim Tams in any number of varieties be an acceptable replacement? Not sure what they are, but sure!   Is there any time during the holidays (or the rest of the round) when you'll be away from home for a significant period and it'd be best not to send anything by mail? Nope, not that I know of. If anything comes up, I'll post.   11/28 Would you like to receive ATCs (artist trading cards) or would you prefer something more usable, like bookmarks or something? I would like ATCs. I also like bookmarks, though.   What witch would like a cloak? That would be awesome!

Witching on a Budget - Stealth (How to Stay Anonymous Without Buying Everything Online)

Autumn 2008, I had a major dilemma. I knew money was tight, so it was going to be a mostly-handmade round for me. BUT, I was assigned a witchee from my immediate geographic area, and she knew me and, because of our special gatherings, she either knew personally or knew of pretty much all the other Switch Witches in the immediate area. As much as she might try NOT to sleuth me out, the game would be up pretty much the moment she saw the postmark. How was I to stay an anonymous witch right up until I was ready to reveal, yet also stay in contact with her and make sure she got multiple packages, without breaking the bank?   See, the easiest way to confuse your witchee as to your location is to make sure early packages come from etailers or etsy sellers or the like. Or, if you're one of those people who use Paypal or Stamps.com or other postage-from-your-computer services (I'm not), you can edit, forge, or otherwise obscure your postmark that way. If you like to use UPS or Drop Ship Express or FedEx, you may still be able to work with your shipper to fudge things a bit. Most places, USPS is too paranoid to help you out with this anymore. I can't say for sure with any other country's mail system.   Now, let's assume that for whatever reason, those methods aren't going to work for you. What's a sneaky witch to do? Here are some time-honored tips gathered from many veteran witches out there. I didn't come up with most of them, but for reasons of maintaining anonymity, I'm only going to attribute ideas to witches who ask me to. Your fellow witches would love you to use these tips and submit your own - the more people who use them, the more effective they'll be!   * Sneaky barter. Barter is the bread and butter of resourceful witchery, and it applies to everyone, not just those trying to witch on a budget. I've known witches who had no crafting skills whatsoever, but made sure a made-for-witchee item, the equivalent of which could never have been found in stores, arrived on their witchees' doorsteps. I've known witches who have teamed up to witch each other's witchees. I've noticed somebody who wasn't my witchee mentioning that she'd like to try scents from a non-BPAL perfumery I knew I had samples from that were languishing. So I posted to General Chatter "HEY, <witchee>'s WITCH! You should PM me!" When the witch in question responded, we arrived at the agreement that she'd paypal me some $ for the samples, and I'd make up a package for her witchee, complete with personalized note and frimpage. If she hadn't already revealed, it would have been a great way to obscure her location. I've also crafted items for another witch's witchee in exchange for the other witch sending my witchee a package of bought goods from a store local to her (other witch), thereby making it look like I might be in a completely other country and NOT be doing an all-handmade round. As another example, say you've got your eye on another crafty witch's merchandise for your witchee. It costs you nothing to PM that witch and ask if there's something you could barter for it. Or, you notice another witch lamenting that ey has no crafting/cooking skills but wants to witch eir witchee with something handmade/nommy, and it just so happens that you've got the crafting/cooking skills and a little time to do it. You should totally approach that witch via PM and ask to barter. It's also a good idea, if you'd like others to approach you for this kind of action, to post in General Chatter about your barterable skills and willingness to be a co-conspirator or conspire together, so other witches can find you. Many witches will use these words as search keys in the General Chatter Thread to find witches like you to conspire with. You could be one of us!   * What should you do if your witchee contacts you for a barter? The simplest way is to respectfully turn 'em down. If you don't want to do that, you could offer to send stuff to eir witchee in exchange for em sending you something YOU want. If you're really resourceful and into the witching web, you could even offer to send stuff to eir witchee in exchange for em sending stuff to a third witch's witchee (and you don't even need to tell your witchee that third witch's witchee isn't your witchee, ie that third witch is involved at all), in exchange for third witch sending stuff to your witchee. Did you get that? It can get complicated. If you start getting the Nacho Witch Sombrero involved, it can get really tangled, but totally awesome.   * Sneaky seller. If you're a seller on Etsy, or otherwise have a company to sell your handmade items, particularly if your work has been sent to other witchees in the past, it's extremely effective subterfuge to send your witchee a package of your goods made specially for your witchee and pretend you're just the middlewitch and the package contains only items eir witch commissioned from you and had you send em. Pack it up just like you normally do with your outgoing packages, and add a note like "from your Switch Witch" or something else that could imply that you're just the middlewitch, but doesn't exclude you actually being the real witch.   * Sneaky not-seller. If you've got time and materials to make up a couple of fake handmade business cards, hang tags, letterhead, etc, you can invent a handmade items company to send your witchee stuff from! This one's tricky, though, as your witchee is likely to try to find out more about the company and their merchandise, which will expose the fact that it doesn't exist if you don't make it suitably obscure.   * Sneaky packer. If you're a witch who works for an etailer or mailorder company of some sort, particularly a well-known one like B&N or Lush, and you have access to their packing supplies/department, you can make it look to your witchee like ey's getting a package from that etailer, which could have come from anybody anywhere. To accomplish this on the cheap, make your package up out of samples or stuff you aquired with your employee discount, and ship it out through their shipping department (arranging for S&H and packing it yourself).   * Sneaky redirect. If you're not lucky enough to be one of the above, you can still do the sneaky redirect. Say you want to send your witchee some cheaply aquired or like-new-from-your-stash books/DVDs/games/fabric/yarn/tea/etc from your stash, and you've ordered from Amazon/B&N/fabric.com/KnitPicks/Zhena's/SBS Teas/etc in the past. If you carefully saved the packing materials from past orders, you can reuse the them (save $) and make it look like you had those items shipped from that company (obsfucate geography) all at once. Just remember to use the same shipping company they usually do (ie, UPS for B&N), and write the return address so it says something like "Shipping Department," and the zip code matches the postmark (for USPS) or origination (for UPS), etc.

GOP

I didn't want to like this one (it's the GOP afterall....shudder), but I am ashamed to admit....I do. At first it is more on the masculine side, but then developes into a slightly sweet, woodsy scent with a hint of musk. It's really very unisex and gorgeous on both me and dh. I will definitely keep and wear this, while just ignoring the name.

Those Three Little Letters

I am not really sure why I did it; I already had one from when I was 23 (and one is usually enough for most people). I was in-between jobs and desperate, so I took a drastic step: I got another Master’s degree.   After three years of running off to take exams while my husband lounged by the pool in Kigali, lugging statistics texts to my office in Kabul, and declining friends’ Friday night invitations to Harlem Jazz so I could write reports, it’s all over. Now my business cards read:   Confection Marzipana MA, MPH   A tad anticlimactic, no?   Three years of my life, countless hours and thousands of dollars for three little letters. And--get this--I am not even employed in the sector of my new degree (but rather in the discipline of my former Master's).   Yeah, so now that it’s all over I am a little bit at loose ends. Without the demands of writing a thesis and taking courses I am not sure what to do. However, I have some ideas (in no particular order):   -Get a pilot’s license (impossible for Americans in former Soviet Union) -Write a cookbook -Take up violin again -Learn to kick-box/cage fight -Improve my Russian grammar   So heed my advice: if you have one Master's degree and are considering getting another, don't. It's really not worth it. Plus, you get yourself worked up into a frenzy of being active and studious on weekends that is really hard to undo.

Witching on a Budget - Presentation Makes A Difference

Personally, I've never managed to successfully plan and execute a theme, but I can say that one of the biggest differences between the feeling of opening a package I ordered from a random etailer and the feeling of opening a care package from somebody who loves me is the personal touches. So, once you have your package contents settled out, doing little extra things like taking the time to individually wrap gifts in a pretty way, adding a personal note on a nice card, using unique and witchee-useable packing materials, and otherwise paying attention to the presentation of your package can give your witchee's package opening experience a huge boost and make em feel extra special.   Tissue paper is cheap, pretty, and makes a great lightweight wrapping. I'm not a wrapping-paper-saver, but I DO save reasonably-unripped tissue paper from whatever source, fold it flat, and store it against the inside of my "Switch Witch & swaps supplies" box, which I also keep stocked with smaller stuff I want to remember to add to my witchee's package, smaller materials I've bought for witchee projects, samples of tea my witchee might like, BPAL/BPTP swag (stickers, postcards, etc), padded envelopes, saved bits of (good condition) bubble wrap, packing/teflon/scotch tape, Priority Mail address stickers, Delivery Confirmation slips, and occasionally shipping boxes that I've broken down flat for storage. This ensures that I always have exactly what I need, right down to a variety of colors of tissue paper to ensure I have some of my witchee's favorite colors, to quickly pack & send a package to my witchee on the slightest whim.   Other good things to boost the presentation of your package include bits of ribbon, pretty yarn, sparkly elastics, etc, for use in wrapping - they make it easier to get into small packages than tape, and they're reuseable if your witchee is a thrifty witch. Also those little plastic bags with themed stuff painted on them make a good and inexpensive presentation boost. Halloween, holiday, hearts & flowers, smileyfaces, whatever. If you're a longtime Switchwitch or you do a lot of swapping, chances are you'll find an occasion to dress up your gifties in a fancy bag like this.   Say, for example, it's the Halloween round and you'd like to send your witchee some unique candy corn you found. Or maybe you made em a batch of Jack-O-Lantern cookies. They'll be yummy and great if you ziplock them, but it's even better if you dress them up in a little Halloween-themed baggie tied with black ribbon or yarn.   Now, say for some reason you're fresh out of tissue paper and pretty decorated baggies. Never fear, you can get creative with ziplocks, newsprint, etc, and permanent markers! Or nail polish! Or whatever you have on hand (just remember to put down newspaper first). You could even send a package that's 100% handmade - right down to the wrapping paper.   Seriously, adding that extra little personal touch of wrapping it up pretty is something that can be done inexpensively, quickly, and makes a HUGE impact.   Happy budget-witching!

Witching on a Budget - Food!

From what I can tell, the real meaning of Switchwitch is to give and get individual personal attention and recognition. That's pretty much what the requirements constitute, with of course the caveat that there be something tangible exchanged, because that's measurable and "attention spent" isn't so much. But really, it's all about the individual personal attention and recognition. As a witch you get to feel that you're having an effect, which is awesome because so much in life it can be difficult to measure the effect of our work, but a good witchee will report when ey receives our gifties, and generally also says how it brightened eir day, so look! Noticeable effect! As a witchee you get to feel that somebody's paying attention to you, which is awesome because it's also so easy to feel taken for granted in life, but a good witch will read your questionnaire and stalk your posts and send gifts aimed at your tastes, so look! Somebody's paying attention! And you didn't even have to figuratively stomp your foot and demand that ey pay attention. On the contrary, it's an anonymous person who's probably never even met you!   That said, I'm out to prove that it is totally possible to do justice to your witchee even if you're on a tight budget.   In this installment of Witching on a Budget (which, because blogs can be edited, will be added to as I think of more things), we talk about something that a great many of us can do - cooking!   --- In this entry: (use bolded words to search within entry) * Mixes in a Jar * Chocolate Bark * Vegetarian Doggie Treats * Cook up that Pumpkin ---   Make em a Mix In A Jar - seriously, this is a great idea. I love having a jar in the pantry that I can just toss into a pot with some easily-available kitcheny stuff, and have an awesome dish come out the other end, with most of the prep work done for me. It's like having a boxed brownie mix or a bagged soup/side mix, but with a lot more love and flavor, and can be made to your witchee's exacting tastes. Also? Prettier, and with no artificial ingredients, because you made it yourself! Thanks to <B>gatesofrocknroll for this link with lots of mix-in-a-jar ideas and recipes. Let your imagination go wild!   Super-easy Chocolate Bark (cost dependent on choices made, but I estimate about $5 for a cookie sheet full) You will need: - A working burner of a stovetop or hot plate that is capable of boiling water - Chocolate, any type, any form. Don't be afraid to experiment, or to use whatever you have on hand. I like it midnight dark, as have some of my witchees, so I often do something like one block of Trader Joe's bulk dark chocolate blended with a few bars of baker's chocolate. If your witchee likes white chocolate, you can find that in bulk, too. - Bits, any type, dry. Finely diced crystallized ginger, dried cherries, blueberries, cranberries, raisins. Nuts? Whatever strikes your fancy. Try looking through the pantry. - A big (heat-resistant) spoon or spatula - A cookie sheet, preferably with a lip all the way around the outer edge - Wax paper or parchment paper. Aluminum foil or the thicker type of plastic wrap that will stand up to boiling water will also do in a pinch (it's not as pretty), but an unprotected cookie sheet is not recommended. - A double boiler. If you don't have a double boiler, you can make on out of a metal bowl and a saucepan it will fit inside, or two saucepans that can be nested so that the inside one doesn't touch the outside one at the bottom. Just put your (larger) saucepan on the stove, arrange your smaller receptical inside it so the bottoms don't touch, and pour water into the bigger one (don't get the water in the smaller one). Turn on the heat, the heat warms the water, the water warms the smaller receptical, and that warms your chocolate. Voila, instant way to melt your chocolate without burning it!   Line you cookie sheet with wax paper or parchment paper. Put water in your double boiler, and warm it over medium heat. Throughout these instructions, keep an eye on it and adjust the water level if necessary, to keep it from boiling over or boiling dry. Dump in the chocolate. As it starts to melt, stir it up so it blends properly and melts evenly. When the chocolate is completely melted, dump in the bits, stir it up, and take it off the heat. Pour the melted chocolate with bits onto the cookie sheet. Working fairly quickly, smooth it down with the spoon/spatula so it's about evenly distributed. If you are going for a swirl effect, melt two types of chocolate simulaneously and separately, then pour them on opposite sides of your cookie sheet and swirl them together with your spoon/spatula while smoothing them down to make them even. You may wish to hold the bits until the chocolate is all smoothed down, then scatter them over the top of the melted chocolate bark and tamp down lightly to make them stick. I usually put mine in the freezer to cool, particularly if it's summertime. If you do this, make sure to either carefully cover your chocolate so it doesn't freezer burn, or keep an eye on it and take it out as soon as it's solidified. Chocolate can also be chilled or left covered on the counter to set, just make sure you use a hot mat to protect your counters, as the cookie sheet will heat up to the temperature of the chocolate. When it's set up nice and firm, turn the cookie sheet upside down over a clean counter, peel off the paper, and break it into pieces. I generally break it by hand. I didn't include instructions for tempering your chocolate, because I like to make it so it'll melt in your hand. So... it'll melt in your hands if it isn't frozen, and it will melt together if improperly stored. Work quickly, and store in a tightly-sealed container (such as a ziplock baggie) in a cool(!!) dry place.   As if you'll have to store it anywhere after you (and your family) realize(s) you just made chocolate bark.     Breath-Freshening Dog Treats, from Veggie Life Magazine (contributed by the illustrious Ahania, a witch of kitchen magic)   3/4 c minched parsley leaves and stems (1 medium bunch) 1/4 c finely grated carrot 1 T vegetable oil 3/4 c whole-wheat flour 1/2 c corn flour or finely ground corn meal 1/2 t baking powder 1/4 c water   Preheat the oven to 350. Mix together the parsley, carrot, and oil. In a large bowl, mix the flours and baking powder. Add the parsley stuff and mix until it's all in coarse crumbs, then add water until it's a smooth ball. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface until it's 1/2 inch thick, then cut into shapes. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake 20 minutes for soft biscuits, 30 minutes for hard.   They can also be rolled out thinner to make human crackers, too. They're preportedly quite tasty with a good dip.     How to turn that pumpkin into something you can cook with - Use this as a cheaper alternative to canned pumpkin. You will need: - a pumpkin, any type. Frankly, the ugly red ones are tastier than the Jack-o-lantern type, but the former tend to be more expensive than the latter in, say, November when nobody wants to make Jack-o-lanterns and there are lots of big orange pumpkins left at the store. - a really sharp big knife - a big flat-bottomed baking dish with sides (such as a brownie pan), the bigger the better, best if you have a few - water, or butter and a brush - a working oven - patience   Preheat oven to 350°F. De-seed the pumpkin. If you desire, separate the seeds from the stringy pulp for seasoning & baking, but that's another recipe. Cut the pumpkin into pieces that will lay mostly flat.    Option 1: Fit the pieces, skin-side-up, into your "brownie" pan(s). Put about 1/2"-1" of water in the brownie pan(s), and lay the pumpkin into the water skin side up. Making sure the water never runs dry, bake until the pumpkin feels tender when you insert a sharp knife. You'll probably need to do this in batches.   Option 2: for more flavor, brush melted butter all over all surfaces of the pumpkin, paying special attention to the non-skin surfaces. Fit the pieces, skin side down, into your brownie pan(s). Put about 1/4" of water in the bottom of the pans, then lay the pumpkin into the pans skin side DOWN. Being careful to brown but not burn the pumpkin, bake until the pumpkin is tender when you insert a sharp knife. You'll probably need to do this in batches.     When done baking, take the pumpkin pieces out of the pan and let them cool on a towel or plate until you can touch them comfortably. Cut/peel the skin off. Put the flesh into a big bowl or food processor and mash it to a pulp. Alternatively, if you want chunks of pumpkin, chop it into chunks instead of mashing.   Pumpkin prepared in this manner chills and freezes well. From this state, you can use it any way you'd use the canned stuff, but it'll taste fresher.

Kubla Kahn

In the imp it's mostly jasmine. Uh oh.   Wet it's still mostly jasmine but it starts to darker a bit and it's beginning to smell like jasmine incense. Very pretty.   But then...I start to catch a hint of the dreaded cat pee, but that lasted about 2 seconds and it's gone. (sigh of relief)   As it dries further it starts to smell like this shop I used to go into that sold soaps and incense. It's actually very pretty and surprisingly clean smelling. I actually expected something a bit smokier and spicier. It's a lovely scent though and I'm very happy I got to try it. I think I will have to see how it does in my locket, hopefully it will be a bit more complex without my wonky chemistry.

Bien Loin D'ici

Category: Ars Amatoria   Dammit! I don't detect *any* of these notes in this at all! To me, this is all jasmine, with maybe a barest hint of musk. It's definitely pretty and sensual...but not the OMG yumminess that I was hoping for.
