eLiner Notes for SultryWolf’s “Essence of You” CD

Track 1: Yakety Sax (a.k.a. The Benny Hill Chase Theme) Artist: Boots Randolph This track represents my goofy side, which is fairly prominent. I often hear the theme running through my head as I'm doing one thing or another. Embrace fun!   Track 2: Take Me Down To The Infirmary Artist: Cracker I cite Cracker as my favorite band (though Murder By Death - see Track 7 - has achieved tie-hood for the title), so some song from their extensive discography had to make an appearance here. This track has a nice balance of great song with lyrics that really do represent aspects of my personality. The narrator wants to go to the infirmary so he won't have to drink or sleep alone. Also, I love hospitals.   Track 3: No One Driving Artist: John Foxx A favorite from my youth, and, again, one that speaks to me on a deeper level. In a marijuana haze one night, my friend and I 'realized' that the song is about athiesm (There's no one driving.) Even straight, I can see that interpretation; was it intended? Who knows. We also loved the line, "Someones gone liquid in the sheets. A sudden smell of burning leaves." which my friend 'realized' represents orgasm followed by the lighting of a cigarette! So cool. If you like this track, in any wise, I strongly recommend the whole album, Metamatic.   Track 4: Requiem (K.626), Introitus Composer: Mozart Performers: Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields I have always loved the concept of the Requiem, music to commemorate a person's passing (and to glorify the host of heaven). Mozart's is arguably the finest example, and this brief movement its most dramatic, building as it does. It never fails to move me, fill me with the numinous, as they say. I particularly like taking it out of context, as I've done here. Its like a brief flash of the glory of the heavenly host, then on to:   Track 5: Queen of the Mountain Artist: Burning Spear Just a great song, and I do love the mountains.   Track 6: Danse Macabre Composer: Saint-Saens Performers: Angèle Dubeau and La Pietà The first classical piece that really resonated with me as a child. We listened to classical and jazz pretty exclusively, but this is the first one I remember loving and needing to know the title and composer so I could find it again. Ran across this version only recently on a collection called Infernal Violins, and it really captures the image of the risen dead, dancing in a mouldy graveyard.   Track 7: Until Morale Improves, The Beatings Will Continue Artist: Murder By Death Like Cracker, Murder By Death, a favorite band, had to make an appearance here. The title of this track doesnt really describe the content. Its from an album which tells a story, of a man tracking the Devil across the Southwestern US and into Mexico, and in this track, hes facing the seeming impossibility of the task. I particularly like the line, "I drink whiskey instead of water, 'cause I can't stand to be sober in this place." because whiskey is my drink. I can stand to be sober, but don't always want to be.   Track 8: Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty / I've Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts Artist: Barry ODowd & The Highlanders If I had a version with just Blighty, I'd have included that - nothing against Coconuts, but the purpose of the track's inclusion here is my love of England.   Track 9: Once Upon A December Artist: Deana Carter One of my favorite songs to sing along to! This is the end-credits rock-version of a song from the animated film Anastasia and, for once, is wonderfully done. I really like the guitar solo.   Track 10: Devils Artist: The Endparty Thinking back, Im not sure why I chose this track over Home ("Everywhere you are feels like home to me" - which definitely describes how I feel about Hubby *aww*). But I do love this track, and I am not without my own Devils crawling inside me!   Track 11: My Last Breath Artist: Evanescence Would you believe that I actually made an effort not to make my selections too dark? This track is a song of joy and hope and promise. The narrator is dying, in the arms of her beloved, and she sings of how everything will be all right. The lines, "I'll miss the Winter, a world of fragile things. Look for me in the white forest, hiding in a hollow tree" are of particular significance to me, as I do love Winter (not that we get much of one here in Los Angeles), and I love, love, love the concept of the beauty and majesty of nature reminding us of our loved ones who have passed.   Track 12: Smell of Home Artist: Jules and the Polar Bears My very first Favorite Band. Fortunately, I got to see them twice before they were gone forever. Nothing that Jules Shear has done since quite lives up to the greatness that was the Polar Bears. The song is about the desire in all of us to have and find home, and how elusive that concept can be. To me, theres another association, because I'm so dog-crazy: for a dog, theres great comfort in the smell of home.   Track 13: St. James Infirmary Artist: Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band I have lots of versions of this, my very favorite song of all time, and the one that I can, on occasion, be persuaded to perform. This version captures the Hot Jazz origins of the song rather nicely. (My very favorite version is not available as an audio track; it's the Cab Calloway version in the Betty Boop cartoon Snow White) This is an instrumental version, but the song is another dark topic: the narrator visits his beloved in the morgue, where she has died from a drug overdose, and he describes what he'd like his own funeral to be like.   Track 14: Little Room Artist: The White Stripes By no means the best White Stripes song, but it speaks to me on the nature of creativity. "When . . . you've got something good, you're going to need a bigger room. When you're in the bigger room . . . you might have to think how you got started sitting in your little room." Genius.   Track 15: Houdini Artist: Kate Bush Moving little work about Houdini's wife trying to reach her husband through a medium. Although I am not a traditional romantic, I have strong feelings about True Love, and that even death cannot sever such a link, and this song touches all those places. Makes me cry every time. Also, Houdini is just cool!   Track 16: Carrousella Artist: In The Nursery I really love this track. I can't come up with a really salient reason for having included it here, but because I love it so much, I associate it with myself, if that makes sense.   Track 17: Under The Bridge Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers I talk a lot of smack about Los Angeles, but it's my birthplace and my home, and I have a fondness for it born of that. Los Angeles has always, and always will, take care of me, just as described in the song. Thank goodness it didn't take a devastating heroin addiction (as in the song) to realize it!   Track 18: Libertad Composer: Michel Cusson Singer: Marie-Soleil Dion A beautiful song from the soundtrack to Cavalia, the equine-human dance show. An incredibly moving show. This track is here because of my love for animals, for working animals (hey, performance is work!), and because the track always fills me with such joy.   Track 19: Darkness Darkness Artist: Robert Plant What a great version of a great song. I love the dark, and this song is a rare tribute to all the wonderful aspects of darkness.   Track 20: Suffocate (EP version) Artist: The Teardrop Explodes Another track included mostly because I just love it. I haven't, thank goodness, had to suffer any relationship such as that described, though I've heard of plenty.

..

I feel like the worst, most useless human being in the world. I am a drain on society. My boyfriend could do so, SO much better than me if he took the time. I can't do anything right. I drop things. I break things. I managed to slice my hand open with a screwdriver while adding a case fan to my PC, how the hell does someone who isn't utterly stupid manage that?   I want to crawl into a hole and seal it behind me and cry forever in the lonely darkness.

BPAL: Faustus

Faustus Category: Sin & Salvation Quantity: sample   Description: FAUSTUS An infusion of incalculable power and irresistible temptation. Truly an exercise in megalomania and self-gratification: frankincense and cinnamon, darkened by violet.   Review:   In the bottle: What I smell is mostly frankincense, with a little bit of violet, and a drop of cinnamon.   Wet: My skin has just been attacked by frankincense in big quantities… And some dark violets are pushing from underneath.   Dry: It settled down to a mix of cinnamon and violet. It’s spicy, and a little bittersweet.   Verdict: I have to admit spicy cinnamon is very sensual and playful; but man, do I dislike frankincense on me… Also, it’s quite different from my usual feminine perfume oils, but it certainly is empowering and self-gratifying! It’s somewhat masculine, but I think it would fit better on a young man, filled with sexual energy; or as a neutral scent for a woman with an aura of power. When my mother smelled this on me, last December, she asked me where she could buy “a gallon of that stuff”, so I know to whom I can give my sample.   More reviews: Sin & Salvation: Faustus

Ephemera

Category: Bewitching Brews   Oh goodness, this is absolutely gorgeous. This is my first time smelling violet so intently, and it is really, really lovely. This scent lasted all day, lingering particularly in my clothes, letting me fancy myself to be an exquisite, delicate, highly-feminine creature. Another one to add to my list of favorites.

Death Cap

Category: Rappacini's Garden   Ohhhhh, yum! I get a lot of coconut from this, though at the beginning, if I lean down close and sniff my skin, I get the 'dirt' notes -- a musky, loamy sort of smell that is creamy in a way -- like, yes, mushrooms. Incredibly odd, but true. As it dries, the coconut smell takes over for the most part, with just a hint of that creamy 'shroom smell running underneath it. I have to admit that I wondered why people seemed to flip over this, but damn! It's delicious. Definitely on my list of favorites, now!   It has a gentle sort of throw, treating me to wafts of creamy coconut all day long. Yay!

Dance Of Death

Category: Ars Moriendi   It starts out sweet, feminine, and just barely resinous -- very sexy. By the end of the day, the patchouli has come to the fore, and is all that remains. I'm thinking that in the beginning I was detecting the myrrh and possibly the orris, so if you like any of those notes, go ahead and give Lady Death a turn on the dance floor. She's quite alluring -- though one dance with her is enough for me. Good eve, Lady.

Black Opal

Category: Bewitching Brews   Vanilla baby-powder -- that's pretty much what I get from this. And...I suppose that's what an opal *would* smell like, if it had an odor (though I get a lot more of the white, fiery opal vibe from this).   It has a decent amount of tenacity and throw -- I'd rate it a 3 out of 5, on that scale. More of a feminine, demure scent.   I'll probably hang on to my imp of this, just because it's something I'd like to share with my mom somehow, at some point.

Black Lotus

Category: Rappacini's Garden   Several people have described this as 'flowery bubblegum', and I concur! It's very, very sweet -- and pretty, in its own way. I pretty much get just damp, juicy lotus, and that's it. Maybe a powdery hint of myrrh as it starts to dry, but it's mostly a floral, on me.

Baku

Category: Somnium   I've been applying this every night before I go to bed for about ten days now...and for the most part I'd say it works really well. This is the first of the Dream Formulas that I've tried -- I didn't know that you could order them as imps, until someone in a decant circle thoughtfully included this.   The scent is predominantly lavender, with a strong thread of eucalyptus underneath it, and hints of anise here and there. They mingle to create a very medicinal odor -- as a perfume, this would be really bad, but as a component for relaxation and sleep, it's *very* useful. The strident quality of it is actually soothing...it reminds me of when I'd get colds as a child and my mom would smear Vicks on my chest and under my nose -- that same sort of 'OMG this is strong...but it's helping, so yay!' feeling.   By morning, it has worn off, so I never smell it when I get up...though I often can smell traces of the other perfume I've been wearing the day before. This is the perfect medicinal blend -- it does its job, doesn't interfere or interact with anything, and then evaporates.   The vast majority of nights that I use it, I can be asleep in under fifteen minutes, and sleep all the way through the night with no interruptions. While I rarely have trouble sleeping anyway, this past month I've been having lots of problems with anxiety and such, so Baku has been a blessing.   I tend to be a skeptic, but as far as I'm concerned, this stuff works pretty well.

BPAL: The Unicorn

The Unicorn Category: Mad Tea Party Quantity: sample   Description: THE UNICORN A misty, almost luminous perfume: wispy linden blossoms, white flowers, and a touch of sweet herbs.   Review:   In the bottle: A clean, fresh, and clear floral smell. It’s soft and light.   Wet: I get a sweet floral scent. I’m not accustomed to linden blossoms, so my first impression was something similar to lily of the valley, but I could be wrong.   Dry: It’s soft and faint. The herbs blend well together into a light, feminine scent. Unfortunately, it fades away very quickly.   Verdict: It’s lovely, but it doesn’t have much impact, which I think is really too bad because, otherwise, it would be the perfect blend for spring. On the other hand, someone who rarely ever wears perfume and wants to stay away from strong scents, would probably adore this.   More reviews: Mad Tea Party: The Unicorn

imp testing Mon 26/1/09

Some good old-fashioned GC testing, people!   Devil's Claw - this truly is bright (yellow) and smoky black at the same time. How'd they manage that? Sadly, doesn't quite suit my body chemistry.   Wanton - ooh-er, rose attar likes me in this blend with sandalwood and patchouli. Holding onto my imp for further testing! It does smell of something else I've tried before in the Ars Amatoria I think. It's very Indian and sensual.   Tintagel - lavenderish vibe at first, then berries. I don't get all the notes listed but that's okay. Keeping imp for further testing.   Velvet - at first, this is the gentlest chocolate fragrance ever, but sadly goes sour. I guess it's to be expected as milk chocolate BPAL doesn't tend to like me.   Phantom Queen - floral - old-fashioned, clean florals. Apple blossom and meadowsweet love me, and it's just perfect for this summer day.   Magdalene - very sober blend - labdanum is a little too musty, and was worried that white roses wouldn't like me. Sadly, this has virtually no throw on me. It's a pretty quiet blend, but that's fine.   Vicomte de Valmont - very understated cologne. About half of the notes in this I love, and half hate me quite a bit. The sandalwood and musk are most prominent on me but the mint bothers me.

Bathsheba

Bathsheba has been on my radar since my first BPAL order, I just always passed it by. It seemed too girly, too floral, too simple.   In fact, Bathsheba is simply elegant. This could almost pass for regular, commercial perfume, like a classic scent that's been around since the 1920's. It evokes the palest pink blush.   It's lovely and it's the first time I've been able to detect carnation in a blend and I like it very much. Florals don't do well on me, so this is a pleasant surprise. I suppose I had some preconceptions about carnation - something to do with high school dance corsages and green dyed St Paddy's day dreck. Despite their down market connotation, they are nice flowers   Sadly, it has practically no throw or duration on my skin so I reluctantly must put it aside.   Jewelbug's reference to Necco wafers is spot on. That's what I smell on my wrists an hour after application: Ghosts of Necco Wafers   Provided your skin does not consume it, this would be a good choice for those times when over the top BPALs aren't appropriate: job interviews, court dates, public executions . . .

imp testing Sat 24/1/09

(We can has Obama, yea!)   Anyway, onto the fragrant stuff.   As received from Apple...   Buck Moon - not the usual Lunacy oil. I became more fond of lunar oil base last time in hospital and really like this one. It's more of a skin musk than an animalistic one, with a hint of forest scents. Also a little sweet and stays close to the skin upon drydown. It's beautiful in a dreamy way.   F5 - Reminds me a lot of Shanghai. I can imagine this would have been very popular when it came out. I really like it, uplifted me completely which was good as my mind was quite sluggish!   Les Anges Dechus - tobacco is lovely, but the other things that temper it on drydown means it's essentially not suited to me, which is a bit of a shame.   Keeping the first two, the latter will go in my "find new homes for" bag.

an imp swap!

I don't really swap for imps often because it costs us Australians quite a lot to post out internationally. However I did swap recently with the lovely member Apple and acquired:   Les Anges Dechus Buck Moon F5   Am chuffed!   Also received a massive order from the Lab recently. More details to follow.   Have also started photographing my bottles in order to capture, and share the beauty of the labels. Haven't quite finished yet but will give the link to the appropriate album soon. Sadly the board won't let me upload them because it's been a bit temperamental of late.

Mme Moriarty

So after reading all the hype I finally broke down and tracked down an aged decant.   I can't tell if I like it or not. At times I think....not so much, at other times it's interesting. It actually seems a bit more masculine to me, but not manly. I really think I would love this if it wasn't for the red musk as all the other notes are lovely (even the pomegranate, which I more often than not don't like). Also, I seem to like this more from a distance than up close. I have it in my locket right now since I wasn't sure how I feel about it on my skin, and I keep catching a wonderful sceent now and then. But when I sniff it up close....eh.     So the verdict is...I still have no idea. I'll keep trying it and might end up with a bottle, but won't need more than that, esp. since I have Snake Charmer.

Witching on a Budget: Focal Pieces

You've stalked well, you've made contact, you've bartered and shopped and crafted and baked your way to a (series of) fun-filled packages, you've gathered all the supplies to make a stunning impact, and as you're putting together your ultimate package, you realize...   This is kind of disjointed. And there's no big beautiful wonderful focal piece that shouts "I LOVED WITCHING YOU!"   Now, it's hard to pull something perfect out of your hat this late in the game, but it's possible. It's better if you plan ahead sometimes, but other times you only get your stroke of inspiration on this when your witchee makes a chance comment (ie, "I've really always wanted to speak German," "I've always wanted to learn to knit," "I wish I knew how to keep my tomato plants alive and thriving through to harvest," "I wish I had more inspiration cooking dinner for my brood," "I wish I could get this website done so I can finally open my product line up to the world," etc) 3/4 of the way through the round.   I've found that the things that I and other witches have done that made the best centerpieces, by and large were acts of love rather than objects. Some, like beautiful BPAL storage boxes and The Perfect knitted item or jewelry piece, are physical objects that symbolize this love. Others, like lifetime darning services, language/crafting/etc lessons, and graphics design for eir etail business, are intangible. By and large, they are all obtainable with fairly little monetary output, if you're willing to put in the effort, love, and networking.   Say there's an object, like a box or a necklace, that you have the skills but not the materials to make. Second-hand shops, yard sales, and barter are your friends!   Say there's an object that you can't make, but you know other witches who do. Barter barter barter! Services are good for bartering, too. I'll bet there's a jewelry maker or a knitter or a woodcrafter out there who would make your witchee a gift in exchange for a nice big box of salted caramels or vegan cupcakes or... you get the idea.   Traditionally understood crafting skills aren't the only ones that are good for this. I took my prior knowledge of Etsy and the help-for-Etsy-startup information I'd gathered when I'd been designing my own Etsy store, added some basic graphics manipulation skills (seriously, very basic - I just used some pictures of her products, an image from her web page, a white background, and the Paint program that comes with Windows), a bit more research, and some of my time setting the whole thing up, and made Coldie her Etsy store (and a primer for getting up and running with it), which she'd been wanting to start up for some time. She already had the business, making jewelry for people and advertising by word-of-mouth. I supplied the Round Tuit, and now she's got an Etsy store, which expanded her earning potential quite a lot. Total monetary output: $0. Impact on my witchee and her life: Priceless.   Also, let's say you speak a language or are good at a skill your witchee would like to better emself with. Even long-distance, lessons in these things are possible. Got a digicam with a video function? Make videos of yourself saying basic things in the language, or demonstrating techniques for the skill. Make a modular primer, burn it to CD, draw some pictures, scare up some materials from your stash. Offer to correspond via email/video/audio (on CD if necessary) with your witchee to help em through the learning curve. Total monetary output: low. Impact on your witchee's life: Priceless.   Or, make a cookbook on CD that your witchee can print out, or use water-resistent cardstock and a sewing needle to make a lay-flat hard-wearing print version.   Believe me. With health problems, insomnia, four kids, couple's therapy, home reconstruction, and a demanding career, I know about being busy. But there are ways to turn a few minutes here and there and that beautifully burgeoning heart of yours into an incredible, low-cost, high-personal-value focal piece, and really do your witchee justice. Think hard about your skills, ask around, watch your witchee's posts, and you can find the inspiration and resources you need.   Happy witching!
