Summer SW Questions 7/12

Question...do you fret or take it personally when your witch or witchee gets too quiet? Like they figured you out and don't like you?   I try not to. My first witchee was very quiet, but acknowledged my packages with much enthusiasm, which really helped.   I tend to be sort of medium contact as a witch or a witchee. If my witch contacts me I'll contact him/her back and of course I squee appropriately about packages, but I'm not super chatty on the thread - though I do try to answer the questions. And I do try to keep in touch with my witchee, but life gets busy and sometimes I think "Oh no, I haven't emailed my witchee in over a week!"   <- Bad witch!   Do you try to figure out who your witch is? Do you want your witch to give you clues?   I'm too lazy to be a good sleuth, though if my witch gives me clues I might try. It's just that I don't "know" many of the participants well so I'm unlikely to think "Oh, that must be so-and-so!"   Who has a Kindle? If you do, would you like a Kindle gift card, Kindle accessories, etc. as a gift? Whadda you need?   I don't. I've thought about it - it seems like it would be good for knitting and reading, but I haven't taken the plunge yet.   What about other electronics (Blackberries, iPhone, etc.)? Do you need any accessories, etc. for those?   I have an iPhone, but I just got a lovely new cover for it. I don't think there are really any other accessories...   I've recently been listening to Rasputina's 'O Perilous World' album and am particularly enamored by '1816: the Year Without a Summer'. So I'd like to know if my witchee likes Rasputina, and would like any music by them?   They're not really my style.

Melpomene

Imp #28: Melpomene   "Melpomene is Tragedy, and the sound of Her voice is filled with beauty, power and strength. She is crowned in cypress branches, holds the mask of tragedy, wears the cothurnus and wields a knife or club. Her scent is rife with pathos, and inspires us with the ability to express our grief, loss, and the pain in our souls in a cathartic, creative fashion: dark cypress with mint, geranium, Bulgar lavender, orange blossom and passion flower."   Note: Middle of cycle. Imp from littleone101701's sales.   In the bottle: Cypress takes the stage. I don't really notice anything else.   On me: Cypress still predominates, but some of the florals come out, blended together nicely, with just a hint of the mint. This isn't a cypress swamp, it is much drier. This is the cypress lane leading somewhere mysterious. Not dry and dead. Alive, but not dripping with life.   1 hour+ later: A quiet, subtle scent. A walk in a wooded lane in autumn. The woods are open below the canopy, with little underbrush to be seen. The trunks soar up tall, orderly and branchless like columns in a cathedral nave, finally reaching out to meet each other near the bright grey sky. The wind is still and the leaves littered across the floor of the wood move to the breeze of your footsteps.

Whip

Imp #27: Whip   "Agony and ecstasy: black leather and damp red rose."   Note: Middle of cycle. Imp from littleone101701's sales.   In the bottle: Rose and more rose.   On me: The leather comes out as a base note and makes it more sophisticated. Still, the leather harmonizes and melds with the rose, making it very hard to distinguish the two notes as separate entities. This is an apple-sized red rose, fully open and heady on the vine.   1 hour+ later: At first I thought it was fading, fast, but then suddenly it wasn't. It has very good throw on me. I wouldn't have thought it possible, but this is a sultry floral.

Seraglio

Imp #26: Seraglio   "In long-ago Arabia, harem girls rubbed an herbal poultice formed from a blend of sensual, luxuriant herbs and oils onto their bodies to prepare themselves for the Sultan's pleasure. This lush, indulgent perfume is based on that ancient formula. Sweet almond and Mysor sandalwood enveloped by a heady veil of Bulgarian Rose, neroli, nutmeg, clove and orange peel."   Note: Middle of cycle. Frimp from the Lab.   In the bottle: The almond and orange really stand out to me. I get a waft of orange Madeleine cake, with a sophisticated bitter edge.   On me: Unfortunately, it gets more sugary on me, and the rose comes out from wherever it was hiding and takes over as the main note.   1 hour+ later: The rose does step back and marry with the other fragrances after a short time. There is not much staying power on me.

Libertine

Imp #25: Libertine   "Like a puffed and reckless libertine, Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads.   Rosewood and chamomile with bergamot, violet, red sandalwood, primrose and Arabian musk. "   Note: Middle of cycle. Imp from fruitycake's sales.   In the bottle: To me, this is "perfumy".   On me: On me, the bad perfume smell goes away immediately, and I get a rich dark musky floral. I don't know which flower does it, but I get a Victorian feel from this. It is plush velvets, a roll-top rosewood desk, and a man writing with a nibbed pen.   1 hour+ later: It stayed true for as long as I stayed awake, which wasn't really all that long. I don't know if the scent helped me fall into that rich darkness, or if it was just the time of night.

Silk Road Teas: Gin Zhen

We live a few blocks from Lake Michigan, and there's a chilly breeze coming in off the lake. It's a perfect day for a hot cup of tea.   Silk Road Teas (not to be confused with Silk Road Tea) is my favorite vendor of Chinese teas, followed closely by Hou De. Silk Road's teas are hand selected from local farmer's in China. I've been a customer for over 10 years, and have nothing but praise for the company and the tea.   Boutique "tea" shops at the mall charge a lot more for tea and teawares of questionable quality, and even more questionable origin. If you like flavored and scented teas (and who doesn't) check out SpecialTeas. They are my go to for Earl Grey 825, and I love the Peach 927 for iced tea. I've heard good things about Adagio too.   Today I'm drinking Gin Zhen (Golden Needle). I usually brew this tea in a 4 oz. yixing pot, but the boymonster recently caused it's demise. Until I find a replacement (teapot that is, I'm keeping the boy), it's wrong-fu in a porcelain cup with a Finium strainer, instead of gong-fu in a proper teapot.   Description Becoming increasingly rare, this shiny, small–leaf organic black tea is characterized by golden tips on top of long, slender leaves. It is the best organic lot we have tasted providing a full–bodied sweet and malty flavor and a deep amber liquor.   Wrong-fu Brewing Parameters leaf to water ratio: 1 gram leaf to 2 ounces water leaf: 4 grams water: 8 ounces, just off a boil   Preheat your cup by rinsing with boiling water. infusion one: 90 seconds infusion two: 90 seconds infusion three: 3 min.   Rich, complex, chocolate, malt and honey. Big time delicious! You should get three infusions out of the same leaves, the third will be thinner, but still tasty. I usually add a bit of sugar to the third infusion to perk it up.   Gin Zhen is wonderful iced. Just use 3 ounces of water to brew instead of 8 ounces, then add a nip of sugar and 5 ounces of ice. Perfection!   You can cold brew this tea too, using the leaf to water ratio above. Just pop it in the fridge for and hour or two to steep.

Serpents with Glittering Eyes and Forky Tongues

In the imp: Sweet, unidentifiable fruit, and something almost cleaner-ish.   On wet: Fruit syrup - the kind that you get from canned fruit cocktail. Lightly sweet and pourably slick.   Drydown: I'm mostly smelling musk, maybe whatever the "serpentine green herbs" are, a touch of the lemon/lime combo every once in a while (not very prominent at all), and something dry and spicy-hazy underneath it all - I'm assuming that's the snakeskin. Weirdly evocative! The fruity vibes from the initial application vanished after just a minute or two, but the further it dries, the more currant I seem to get - wonderful! I love Beth's currant notes, so I'm really glad they make a more obvious appearance!   Overall: The list of notes sound like they were made for me - lemon, lime, musk, currant - but it takes a *long* time for these superstars to actually wake up and shine on my skin. I didn't care for the wet-to-dry stages that much, and the later drydown - which I really, *really* like - was super faint and didn't seem to have much throw. I agree with posters before me who mention the 51 comparison. 51 is one of my favourite light musk/fruity blends, and Serpents definitely heads in the same direction the longer it sits on my skin. Even still, it's huffably addictive (my nose is mashed against my wrist even now), so it's quite possibly bottle-worthy in the future. 3.5/5

I've had some time off work to do what it is I *really* like to do (poetry stuff, that which earns no money you understand...) and in the meantime have found some imps lying around that had yet to be tested. I really need to get back into the routine of testing, seeing as I still order LE decants!   Manners Among Men and Women in the Red Light District - a light woody scent. Slightly feminine, and very refined. The blonde wood is lovely because it's so light and melds so well with the apricot. Even with the apricot, I think this would be fantastic on a fellow. I don't think it has much throw on me, but this is due to personal body chemistry rather than the fragrance. I think on the right person this will sing beautifully.   The Music of Erich Zahn - all just dirty vetiver on me, I'm afraid. I did briefly test on a male friend and it was so much more rich and complex. But I am fond of BPAL's vetiver - it's very rich and reminds me of fragrant dirt or soil with a burnt aroma added in.   Litha 2009 - very, very floral. Most dominant is the honeysuckle. That does die down and it becomes more honeyed later on. I won't be keeping my decant.   Nyarlatholep - not really a big fan of ozonic scents, but this one I did quite like - probably because of the incense. That isn't quite enough for me in the end - the wateriness comes back and overpowers the incense. It's pretty nice as far as the oceanic scents go, for me.   Villain - this will be devastatingly debonair on a lad, but I quite like it on me, even though there isn't much throw. The lime is just gorgeous and it's a subtle fragrance that speaks volumes precisely because of its subtlety. Might be an excuse to get a new bedtime scent that's unisex...!

Imp #24: Pannychis   "An attendant of the Goddess Venus. She presides over nocturnal pleasure, nighttime festivities, and all the joy and delight that can be found in the darkness. In later ages, it became the name of the all-night festival that closed the Eleusinian Mysteries. Night-blooming jasmine, moonflower, cardamom, sandalwood, black currant, ylang ylang, frankincense and lily."   Note: Middle of cycle. Imp from littleone101701's sales.   In the bottle: Sandalwood takes the front with the jasmine. Not sure if I can distinguish any of the other notes.   On me: The sandalwood moves back and the jasmine and lily dominate with a spicy background from the cardamom and frankincense. I'm not sure if I can identify the moon flower, but in general I get a well blended floral scent from this.   1 hour+ later: The floral moves back some and it becomes more spicy and more balanced. Unfortunately, this doesn't have a lot of staying power on me.

Good Judy: Atomic Cheesecake

Atomic Cheesecake Category: Starlite Oasis Quantity: sample   Description: ATOMIC CHEESECAKE It’s all about the pinup. With their peek-a-boo poses and pouty lips, these blonde bombshells, buxom brunettes, and randy redheads are the ultimate art of seduction. Pure, unadulterated cheesecake, vanilla bean, vanilla musk   Review:   In the bottle: It does smell like cheesecake! I smell cream cheese and vanilla.   Wet: It’s pretty much the same as in the bottle. It’s very creamy, rich, warm, and decadent. If it’s based on a real cheesecake, I want the recipe.   Dry: I smell the vanilla musk a little better, but it’s still a lot of cream cheese. Overall, it stays true from beginning to end.   Verdict: It smells delicious! It’s like a real cheesecake, served fresh and tender; it’s only missing the berry sauce.

Notes

Just some notes on B&B stuffs that are awesome, and some that just didn't work.   Tried CocoaPink's Princess Poo and Shine Sweetie: As much as I hate to admit it, this is the best shampoo and conditioner I have ever used. It makes my hair extraordinarily soft without being greasy. Also, it didn't weigh my hair down one bit! The Vanilla Bean Noel reminds me of the Vanilla Betty Crocker cake frosting. Not too bad! Overall..... This product rules! Their So Broke Sugar Scrub is the best thing for my legs to keep away ingrown hairs and all other types of bad things. At first I wasn't liking the scent (Cactus and Honey), but it has grown on me. The scrub is sufficiently scrubby and foams slightly. The only drawbacks to Cocoapink are their spotty customer service, horrible TAT, and many of their scents fall into the "OMG I got ultra sweet sugar up my nose!"   Okay, in response to the Cocoapink review above, I took Andra's suggestion to heart and tried the Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo and Conditioner. It is wonderful and leaves my hair softer yet fluffy than Cocoapink's products. The only drawback is that they only have one scent (though I believe they also carry a lavender shampoo/conditioner?). However, this is the first shampoo and conditioner that leaves my hair so nice, that I don't feel the need to blow dry my hair all the time anymore. This product is wonderful, and I hope it is never discontinued. Also, it is incredibly cheap! Less than $4 for a 16 oz. bottle each.   So, now I am trying out the Aubrey Organic shampoo and conditioner. I started out with the Primrose and Lavender Shampoo and the GPB Conditioner since the new winter environment of Wisconsin has been making my scalp peel more than normal. So itchy too! I have used their shampoo and conditioner three times now and have to comment that when they say you need to shake the product in the bottle every time before use, they mean it. I forgot once, and the shampoo was so liquidy, that it did not do my hair any favors. These products are nice, but my bleached hair tips are extremely dry and brittle after use, which I have never really encountered before using any other product. Might be the new climate or something else. I love the smell of the shampoo. It reminds me of something, but I have no idea what. This shampoo and conditioner combo does not make my hair quite as soft as the Trader Joe's shampoo and conditioner, but it is still a nice change.   Need to try Chagrin Valley again. Their Grapeseed Shea Soap worked wonders on my skin! So soft and slightly scented. Wonderful! Tried the Neem and Tea Tree soap and found that it was way too drying for my skin. Not getting that one again. The Shea Rose Clay soap was also very pleasant. Still need to try: Castile & Calendula Baby Soap, Chamomile & Calendula Soap, Chocolate Orange Twist Soap, Cornmeal & Honey Scrubby Soap, Honey Beer Soap (sounds incredibly interesting!), Honey Butter Soap, Orange Creamsicle Soap, Primrose Complexion Soap, and the Rhassoul Clay & Yogurt Complexion Soap.   As for Mad City Sue, I am in love with her Amber Embrace shower parfait. Excellent smell, and works great with a loofa. I also adore her soaps! Have only tried the Honey I Washed the Kids so far (pretty!!) and I have a Violet soap waiting to be used still. Very soft and pleasant on the skin. I am afraid that her sugar scrubs weren't really my kind of thing, but overall I adore Mad City Sue! Her Customer Service is excellent! Oh, I can't believe that I didn't mention her Shea Whip Body Butter from the beginning! It is the best thing for dry winter skin. As soon as you scoop some of this lotion out of the jar and put it on your skin, it melts into a moisturizing oil that sinks into the skin quickly and moisturizes really well. The texture in the jar doesn't remind me of whip or normal lotiony body butters, it is quite a bit harder at first, but it softens up quickly with a bit of body heat. So heavenly! Need to have a stash of this every winter.   Moonalisa   Gudoya Too   Crater Lake Company I tried their All Tressed Up and Moisture Whip Conditioner. Sadly, their products really weighed my hair down and made it greasy even though I was careful in making sure that I washed out all of the product. I like to blow dry my hair after a shower, but even after using their products for a few weeks, the blow dryer wouldn't do anything. There was not a single bit of volume to my hair. Also, it made my skin break out along the sides of my face. I would consider trying out something other than those two hair products though. Their scent list is amazing, and there are other types of shampoos/conditioners.   I am seriously loving the face stuff by Woobie Bath. I got their Fluffy Facial Cleanser, Botanical Facial Lotion, and Night Time Botanical Facial Lotion. Within the next few days I will know whether or not it is the official cure for the stubborn, horrible acne that I have suffered from for nine years now. If it does end up being my miracle cure, now I will just need to find something to repair all the scars.... Yay for hope! -Update- It definitely worked wonders!! Even when I was supposed to get my horrible "that time of the month" acne, I only had two tiny little breakouts! Of course, the minute my skin started to clear up, I stopped washing my face religiously and the breakouts were back. So, this means I have to use the stuff twice a day, or else!!   Just tried Haunt soap for the first time! I have a few bars still to try, but I decided on the Milk and Nectar first. I love the texture of the soap. Nice lather and my skin loves it! The only thing I didn't like so much about this bar in particular was the scent. It smelled like those sweet tarts candy. Not really my thing. I have the Empire soap in my shower now. It is nice as well. This one's lather is a brown color, which was slightly disconcerting at first. Was sick the first time I used it, so I have no idea how it smells. Very good! The only drawback to the Empire soap was that it stained parts of the tub brown. Be sure to wash the tub out well when using this one.   I got a few Villainess soaps for a friend, and one just happened to fall in the cart for myself.... Jai Mahal is AMAZING!! I love the soft spicyness and the soap itself is nice and cleansing/moisturizing! Jai Mahal is one of my new fav's and the boy loves it as well! I also loooove the smell of Villainess' Embargo! I also got a Villainess scented soap, but I am not sure about it. It is REALLY heavy on the leather. I'm not sure if it is one of my favorites, but I do like it in a way.   BoondockG   Okay, so the next soap on my list to try is from the Beer Soap Company. I ordered from their etsy store since there were more scent choices there, but I would suggest using the Soap Box Co. instead. It took forever for the package to arrive to me.... Anyways, on to the soap reviews. I got my boy the Wood Cashmere one. It is a nice, sweet, woodsy scent. Very pleasant. I have yet to use it in the shower though.   I have been using the facial serums from Dress Green on Etsy for a month now and have seen some amazing improvements in my skin. I had to stop using the Woobie bath facial cleanser because I started getting horrible cystic acne that was not effected by it. Anyways, I have been using Dress Green's Smoothing and Reparative Serum as both facial cleanser and moisturizer in one. It is amazing! Ever since moving to WI from CA, my face has been dryer than normal to the point of intense flakiness. Dress Green's facial serums got rid of the flakiness over night and I have only had two small breakouts since starting up with it. Also, it smells wonderful! I am definitely going to be a repeat customer!   I tried the Timeless Shampoo and Conditioners from Heaven and Earth Essentials but sadly together they weren't for me. The shampoo itself seemed to coat my hair with something and after using the conditioner, my hair was just weighed down and kind of greasy. Really weird. I did like their bar shampoo though! Substituting the timeless shampoo with the bar shampoo made things nice and soft!

What new scents from the update are calling your name?:   A few of them sound interesting, but it's always so hard to tell what will work... Also you just made me order Berry Moon - my first Lunacy shortly following my first Inquisition.   ALL IN THE GOLDEN AFTERNOON HOW DOTH THE LITTLE CROCODILE - the cedar could very well kill it, but chocolate mint?!? IMPERIOUS TIGER-LILY 'TIS THE VOICE OF THE LOBSTER - woody = bad, but the rest of it sounds so amazing I think I must try! TWINKLE, TWINKLE LITTLE BAT   Also, tis a very good thing I read that because I think I might cry. No more Succubus? I need to go stock up!   I have easy access to Asian candies, tropical fruits(mangosteen, mango, durian, jackfruit) flavored biscuits/chips/snacks, dried tropical fruits, Japanese/korean/taiwanese cosmetics brands and music/CDs. Is there anything you will like from Singapore or Asia in general?   I'd be interested in any vegetarian-friendly Asian candies, I guess. Also loose Thai tea leaves would be awesome.   Do you play any musical instruments? Which ones? If not, are there any you'd like to learn? What styles of music do you play, and are you interested in learning any different styles?   Nope, I sing though. Is there any place you've visited where you feel like you left your heart there? This one is tricky. DH and I are not loving the place we live at all right now. It's just not right for us. So we're scrimping and saving like mad people to try and get to what I'm now considering the Holy Grail of places to live, Seattle. I've never been, but DH has, and he's shown pictures, and told me all about it, and it sounds like my type of paradise. It gets cold, which I love, it's kind of close to water, it's not stupidly sunny all the time.... Even though I've never been there working so hard to be able to move there has kind of put my heart in Seattle already. Of course, Maui, where we honeymooned, or New Hampshire, where I spent summers with my grandparents, or Louisiana, where I was born and raised, all have special places in my heart as well. What one item would you just love to have that is made by a Switch Witch? Anything! The Switch Witches here are notoriously crafty and wonderfully sweet and kind-hearted, so anything made by my Switch Witch I will appreciate and love because s/he took the time make it themselves for me! Is your abode a palace covered in fur, a disaster area ,or a neat freaks delight? Yes to the first two. A super fluffy cat and bunny, and a short haired cat who sheds a particularly large amount of her fur combine to make our place almost perpetually covered in fur. It's also a messy horrible disaster area. Not for lack of us wanting to clean, which we do all the time, we just can't manage to keep it that way. Are there any phobias you have that you absolutely, positively, do NOT want anything from your witch referencing? Well, there are a few, but they are things that I would hope wouldn't be referenced in the first place I'm extremely needle phobic, as in shots and taking blood. It's a big Do Not Want on that front. Same with worms. I don't like them, they are icky and make me extremely squeamish. Are you a good witch or a bad witch? Well now I like to think of myself as a good witch! What kind of a car do you drive and would you want something you could use in your car? Rear view mirror charms, steering wheel covers (a new thinkg for the knitters ), car blessing medicine bags I drive an 06 Kia Rio. I just got rid of my old steering wheel cover cause it was so dirty and gross and I haven't had a chance to replace it yet. Something to make my car smell good would be very appreciated! Do you want to know when you have something coming in the mail, or would you rather it be a complete surprise? I would usually prefer to know so I can be on the look out, especially if it's FedEx or UPS, as they sometimes leave packages on the back door, which we never check. What is your mailbox situation? We live in an apartment complex, so a very tiny mail box. Packages though are delivered to the front office and we are left with a cheery neon pink slip in our box informing us of the packages arrival. ***6/25*** Are you interested in Tarot or Tarot art? I think the art is beautiful, but I can't see myself ever learning. What would you think of soap samples/shampoo bar samples? (I believe the latter can be used as soap if you are not shampoo bar inclined). Or other sample sized bath/beauty products, for that matter? Love it! I love bath stuff and love samples! What about burnables as in candles, tarts and/or incense? I love candles, and we burn them a whole lot and could always use more. Not so much on the tarts and incense though. Who knits? ***7/1*** Non-melting candies....what are your favorites? Is there a name for those strawberry hard candies with the gel-ish centers that come in wrappers that look like strawberries? I like those. And Runts. And Gobstoppers... you know, hard candies in general are pretty nummy. Compared to other people in the SW thread, though, I fear my tastes run to the relatively mundane...   What are you happiest about (besides SW)? What makes you feel good this summer? Any summer? Sunshine. Popsicles. Watching the dogs run around outside. I love going swimming, though the opportunities to do so don't present themselves too often here in land-locked land. Summery clothes and summery drinks. Backyard cookouts. Peaches.   Do you like coffee and/or wine? I do!   What are your thought on World Market? Persistent money woes, mostly in the form of debt. My [biological] family. I'm not sure "delicate and dainty" are descriptors of things I'd seek out (they certainly don't describe me! , but if the piece(s) suit me, so much the better. Short and long necklaces are both great; chokers I'm a bit more finicky/hesitant about because I can sometimes be fretful about things close around my neck. Bracelets and anklets are both great, especially during the summertime when one can show off such things.   Does my witchee like hats, a floppy summer sun hat or something more stylish? Would you like a hand knit cap or hat? I'm randomly thinking a cloche-type hat might look good on me. My head is kinda pointy, but also kinda small. In general I think I look cute in hats, but sometimes "cute" is a little too close to "aww, lookit the little girl with her daddy's hard hat on!" for my tastes. I don't wanna be cute, I wanna be a badass, goddammit!   What kind of shopper are you? Do you make a budget? Planner, or compulsive? Do you like to buy what's new, special offers, only the usual? I'm relatively easily overstimmed, so I try either to have a list or to be sure of what I'm there for. In those cases, bam I'm in, bam I've got my stuff, bam I'm out. Otherwise I tend to wander around, pondering whether I should buy this, or that, or anything at all... can I justify spending the money?... wow, that's shiny... OMG is that Richard Marx on the radio? Yak... Often I'll just pet the yarn/books/CDs and then leave without buying anything. Mostly I don't like shopping. Bah.

What new scents from the update are calling your name?: I'm interested in trying Aperotos Eros, All in the Golden Afternoon, Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat, Brusque Violet, How Doth the Little Crocodile, Against Idleness and Mischief, 'Tis the Voice of the Lobster   I have easy access to Asian candies, tropical fruits(mangosteen, mango, durian, jackfruit) flavored biscuits/chips/snacks, dried tropical fruits, Japanese/korean/taiwanese cosmetics brands and music/CDs. Is there anything you will like from Singapore or Asia in general? Nothing in particular!     ***7/3-5*** Do you play any musical instruments? Which ones? If not, are there any you'd like to learn? What styles of music do you play, and are you interested in learning any different styles? I sing and play a bit of piano. I've had a guitar for a few years now, but kept trying to learn from one of those dumb books that has you playing Jingle Bells over and over, so I never stayed with it.
