Huacas, Part I

Huacas is the term for one's collection of sacred objects in the shamanic tradition of Ecuador. They are used in journeying (meditation), for intent rituals, or for divination. They live together in a bag to absorb eachother's power and so that their power needs to be recharged less often. Because I mention my huacas every once in a while on the Forum, I thought some of you might be interested in a little more detail. So, here's some pictures!   The bag:   The contents: Everything's in little pouches mostly to protect them from crashing into each other and chipping/breaking. The two vials contain tailtip hair from my dogs. They're not labelled and I no longer remember which is which, but it shouldn't matter.   Stones: These are all gifts or foundlings. Stones may be arranged or held for journeying or divination. Some shaman use stones for healing, but I have not explored that.   The geode is for placing other things on - candle, stones, a bit of herb. The bit of petrified wood should by rights be with the other stones but ended up in this picture instead.   Sea Turtle and Dolphin fetishes: I got these when I went through Dolphin/Whale Reiki Master training.   See Part IIfor more pictures and stories!

my very first igi post!

oh wow! i got witched! my witch must have heard the crazed squeeing, the frantic sprint i did back to my house, the shrieks of delight... but, as this is my very first igi post, i want to do the thing properly, so this will be as detailed as i can make it.   so let me set the scene: i was waiting for the post since i knew that both my bpal order and my bindi would be here today. so i was keeping an extra-vigilant outlook. suddenly, there he was. so i skipped down to the mailbox to get my packages. i told him i had two and he quickly produced two packages with the bpal orange tape. i was so confused, but said: "well there should be one more, kinda small." yep, he retrieved my bindi and while i was turning to walk back, it hit me: i'd been witched!   now normally i would have been tearing into my bpal order at the speed of light but no, i had to know what was in this mystery box so cleverly disguised as a bpal order! my hands were shaking with so much excitement i confess it took far longer than it should have to get the tape off. yes, i was that giddy. kids at christmas have nothing on me.   so the very first thing i spotted was this:     my heart was instantly warm. a note and some autumny leaves made me feel so warm and loved. i did not immediately read it, i had to arrange everything contained in the box:     wow. vintage mystery books? like the ones i read when i was little? oh my god witch, you are awesome, you have no idea how much i love these kinds of books. cute pencils? another fave i forgot to even mention on my questionnaire! and imps/decants galore. some are imps of my favoritest gc scents, others are ones i've not yet tried like pickled imp (can't wait to try this one) and PUMPKIN QUEEN!   so i finally opened the note, though with some difficulty because, well, i was still pretty excited and i also have a cat who decided to "help":     the note indicated that the books were from tartchef and the imps/decants were from my witch.   but who i ask, who were the pencils from?   witch (and tartchef), you made my day. no week. this was totally surprising and so uplifting. this day started out a bit meh, but now... i can't remember the last time i've had such a sudden positive change of mood! thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!

9/23 & 24 SW Random Questions

WKAP scents? Meh - too much blood, too many foody/icky florals... Though I will say, Leaf-Strewn Couch might be worth a sniff at some point   How do you feel about stationary? (pens, notepads, cards, pencils, etc.) Yes please! I don't write many full-on letters, but blank cards & postcards are always appreciated. I am a sucker for a good liquid-ink pen, extra-fine point, and my collection of GellyRoll pens are all giving up the ghost at once - black, deep green/burgundy/purple, grey, weird muddy colors, please! I'm also looking for an "L" wax seal for my folks' bed & breakfast... does no one carry these anymore?!   Switch Witches, which shoes do you own that are your favorite? What are your "daily drivers"? I have worn holes in my Harley-Davidson boots - I can't begin to calculate how many miles I've put into those things... This summer, it's been some Lands End sport flats I got on supersale - not inspiring, but way comfy. Just sprung for a pair of SoftSpots, but I long for a pair of Fluevogs... oh hello....   If you could describe yourself in 5 words, what would they be? Deeply rooted, yet endlessly searching.   Who collects ACEOs/ATCs? I don't collect them, but a unique bit of art will always be appreciated What tarot card do you most identify with? Hrm. Depends on the day/week/month... In the Major Arcana, The Star was once my go-to card, but I'm feeling The Sun & The Empress more these days. The Swords as a whole are very important to me - they come up very regularly, and invariably have Something Important to say. There was a shop in Evanston that had a glorious mural of the Queen of Swords - it really spoke to me...   What are you and your family's feelings on: peanut butter, chocolate and caramel? YES.   What are your thoughts on Halloween decorations? I like a little festivity, but Halloween is DH's most hated of holidays... We compromise with lots of mums, pumpkins, gourds, and a token string of jack-o-lantern lights on the porch.   Do you like Celtic things? (Clothes, jewelry, pictures ect.) Within reason... I'm the first generation of my family born outside the British Isles, and we have deep roots in Wales & northern England. The usual "bookstore" Celtic stuff doesn't much appeal (Tshirts, pewter dragons, Celtic Thunder DVDs, you get the idea), and most Celtic music leaves me lukewarm (sorry, Wwindy! )... but our son adores bagpipes, so a good chest-thumping CD of pipes & drums would be lovely.   Would you like more contact from your witch? (I‘m talking particularly about e-mail) My witch has sent me a few lovely emails... but I confess: I am deeply envious of the string of e-card IGIs   Can you receive flowers at your address? Would you prefer food or a plant instead? Oh yes! I never get flowers! Would you mind vintage clothes? It's really, really hard for me to find vintage clothing that fits   What about 2010 Wall calenders? Or 2010 journals or appointment diaries? What subject? Ooh, yes! I'll put a few ideas on my Amazon list...

on being good people

I'm not convinced there are "good people" in the world. Only people who make wise and stupid choices. Some people make many wise and some stupid choices. Some people make many stupid choices with only occasionally wise ones.   Some people seem to make all-stupid choices.   Of course, the standards of 'wise' and 'stupid' are variable according to the individual, their situation, background, ethics and morals, and the choices they've made in the past. Which means it's a whole lot of relativity and little absolutism. Then again, 'stupid' is not the same as 'evil', so maybe there's another layer in there.   Is it evil to make self-centered choices? My sister would believe so. She's very oriented towards unselfish choices - to the point where she'll run herself into the ground rather than tell someone 'no'. That may be 'unselfish' but it's also 'stupid' - at least in my books. I believe if a little healthy selfishness - with the words 'little' and 'healthy' being key.

SW Fall '09 questions part 5

sorry there are so many different question entries. blame it on the emoticon limit...   Yule update: omg... too soon! I haven't even gotten all the Weenies I want and I already have no money! I expect the Yule update to have a good amount of 'need it' things and the Storyville line is going to be way hard to resist. I hope it's permanent! Then there are the anniversary and resurrected scents. AND possibly the CD update?!? Can my witch send me a money tree so I can harvest BPAL monies? I'll only use it for good I promise! I'll buy everybody lots of BPAL gifties with the money I harvest... *gets lost in daydream of all the BPALs and giving them to forum friends*   Stationary: sure!   Shoes: eh, my shoes are some crappy sneakers from target that are falling apart. I have some cute heels that I never wear. It seems odd to me to wear them on a regular basis and I have almost no other time to wear them.   Are there any languages other than english that you love? Would you like any books, music, movies, or other gifts in that language? I don't like English, really. I love the way French sounds and loved it when I was taking classes. I also like Japanese and Russian. (Both of which I've taken classes in and sucked at.) I do have the first Harry Potter book in Japanese that a friend brought back from her trip there. I have no hope of reading it but it's pretty cool.   Do you use henna at all (hair or skin)? No. Sounds cool though.   Are you an Formula 1 fan and will you like a F1 lanyard (& the pass)? huh?   What are your thoughts on Incense? It's okay. I've been burning it some lately but too much can give me a headache.   What about handbags/totes/clutches?? Very yes to all! I love bags to carry stuff around in regardless of size.   Are there any particular movies you want on DVD? Memento   What about stickers?? Cute and decorative   Do you just need anything from the Possets update? Yes. *sigh* @!#%&, BBC (The Big Black Cat), Choc-O-Lantern, Cootie, and I don't think it's a Halloween one but I just found it: Sythe.   suppose I have a bottle of something you (my witchee) really wants, and I want to share it with you. Would you like a rollerball bottle made from oil in my own bottle in it? yes please!   comic books/graphic novels? eh...   Haunt? It all looks amazing. I'm not bothering to put any on my w/l since I don't think there's a place to get it reliably. I know the Soap Box Co. is closing for Oct. and they didn't have much Haunt in the first place. And right now you can get it from the website direct but I don't think you can all the time.   Home-made goodies? yes!!   Newest BPAL update: I have already expressed my sadness over the loss of De Sade. But as for things I want... Raven Moon sounds quite good. And I really want the Pa-Pow scent. New GC things that sound good are: The Black Rider, The Red Rider, The White Rider, The Chicken-Legged Hut (it just sounds so... weird. I want to try it! ), Baba-Yaga, El Dorado. Less so: The little Wooden Doll (I'm a bit worried about the "rose-infused" part) and Vasilissa (if the jasmine behaves itself)   Scarves: I love them! I only end up wearing them in the winter but... it's almost winter so it works out!   Disney: eh...   What movies do you want to see that are at the cinema? The Invention of Lying looks good. My boyfriend really wants to see Zombieland and I'm kinda neutral so I'll probably end up seeing it.   Fruitcake? Never tried it, but would be willing to.   Bacon? I've always been curious about bacon chocolate. I'd like to give it a try. Other than that, I don't think I've actually had good bacon. I've had a bite or two of meh restaurant bacon but... *shrug*   Masks: I like them usually but I'd never get any because I wouldn't know what to do with them   Name Necklace: I probably wouldn't wear it   Bug phobias?: Nope I'm fine with bugs.   Are you panicking, and which GC's are you now desperate to order now?   Bottles to get because I love the scent and don't have a bottle: Xiuhtecuhtli (like woah. It's one of my top 3 GCs. had a bottle, managed to contaminate it, will literally cry if it's disconned and I don't get another. preferably like 3), Hellfire, Bow and Crown of Conquest, Depraved, TKO   Backup Bottles: War, Miskatonic University, The Antikythera Mechanism

Nope, doesn't bother me.   Who wants hair pretties?(headbands, barrettes, pony-o's, scrunchies, bobby pins, hair clips, etc) Headbands are cool, but I can't hold a hair tie or barrette.   I am on an origami crane kick recently, so I wonder if anyone will be interested in origami crane earrings, origami crane in a glass vial (~1.2cm wide) phone charm/pendant or just a container filled with cranes of different sizes. No thanks:(   How do you feel about clothing/accessories made from animals? Anti-fur, leather, shells, etc.? Does even faux wig you out? Doesn't bother me!   How do you deal with stress? What's your favorite way to unwind? With chocolate. And World of Warcraft. I also like back rubs and Waving not Drowning baths to calm me down. Lavender is my de-stressor of choice.   You're given the opportunity to apprentice at any trade (or craft) of your choosing for the period of one year. Your mentor may be any currently living person. Which field of study would you choose, and who would be your mentor? Hmm... that's a toughie and I decline!

Hello there, my darling witch. I know you asked me my scent preferences and I admit while I would love to get a sniff of any of the following please dont feel compelled to include bpal in that box you ordered from the post office. In fact, Im heading to a M&S this very weekend so who knows, maybe I will get to sniff some of these!   But since you asked, I think the wishlist scents would be FEEDING THE DEAD (probably the most wished for-beer:D) the Boo,Creepy,Devil's Night, and Pumpkin V   In other news, now that I have Hammonds Car Confidential I can read about the "most vulgar car"-a 100 ft limo with a king sized water bed and helicopter pad.   This is a sort of wonderland of book-all the weird, nutty and beautiful snippets of car lore as seen by one of the hosts of Top Gear-really I love having it, and will think of you whenever I peruse its pages. Hope youre having a good week, and got your beets roasted!

More decisions.....

More bottles that I may or may not want....I need to decide!   A Fit Of Artistic Enthusiasm....."Electric jolts of mania: a salt-crusted coffin bobbing through tumultuous ocean waves". This sounds good, I'll have to decide when my decant arrives. If it's close enough to Kingsport, I may not need more. On the other hand, if it's a good substitute for Kingsport, maybe that would be a good backup for when my Kingsport runs out.   Hideous Heart....."A macabre Valentine: wild black cherries, licorice root, and cinnamon". I doubt that I'll need a whole bottle of this, unless it really knocks my socks off.   Trevor Bruttenholm...."A classic men’s cologne mixed with the scent of old, yellowed books, a splash of bay rum, and summoning incense". Could be too masculine, but I perk up at bay rum and incense. Waiting for my decant.   Abe Sapien....."A soft aquatic musk with kelp and juniper". Another aquatic! Can you really have too many? See Artistic Enthusiasm above for my thoughts on this one, they're pretty much the same. I have a feeling Abe might be more on the powdery side, but the decant will decide it.   Still need decants of Bite Me, Shadowless Like Silence, and Summer's Last Will And Testament. Rose kind of scares me off sometimes but you never know. You just never know.

M lovely switch witch has been spoiling me rotten, reading every post I make and sending me most magnificent ecards with giraffes and butterflies and requests for my wishlist!   My wishlist is on amazon, which you've clearly found, and my etsy list is in my signature but it has quite spendy items because I just love to look at them, and am not suggesting that my dear SW come up with any of those items. I am thinking I might start my Weenie wishlist with PUMPKIN V because it sounds wonderful, and I will have a look at the other weenies later.   Witch o' mine-you are stupendouos!!     Now there's a stamp ? (Gads, I don't log in for a few days & looks what happens! I'm going to hit the highlights, dearest Witchy, but do let me know if there's a specific question you'd like me to answer...) Are there any musicals you love? I loathe musicals with nearly every fiber in my body. I am English. We do not burst into song willynilly. Notable exceptions: Tommy, Dancer in the Dark.   How broad are your musical tastes? How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky? The only genres I avoid as a rule are the ones you're likely to hear on mainstream radio (candy pop, over-produced R&B, scream-O, New Country). T-minus 2.5 Days!

This morning, I wanted to go to brunch...but it was breakfast burritos, which aren't that exciting to me. So my sweet boyfriend made me hashbrowns and biscuits and gravy from scratch! It was so nice. I wasn't feeling that great thanks to lady troubles, so I even fell asleep while he was grating 3 pounds of potatoes by hand.   I caught up on my laundry today, not a super interesting day around here. Yesterday, I went to the VegFest and sampled all sorts of vegan stuff, including chocolates, marshmallows, and ice creams! I also got to try this new "cheese" everyone's been talking about.   I also went to my local Lush and and scored free stuff, because it was a pirate party for Talk Like a Pirate Day! I got a huge bottle of Olive Branch for my boyfriend and I to share. He doesn't like to admit it, but he likes to use Lush! I make him wash with Sea Veg soap and use Dream Cream on his eczema.   It got rainy yesterday and it looked like Portland again...but today the sun came back. I'm conflicted because I would like to enjoy summer a little longer, but I'm also ready for it to be fall. Well, it's going to be 7 months of rain, so I guess I should get as much sun as I can.   I perused the Carnaval Diabolique today, after someone on the threads said there might be an update soon. I have not tried anything from CD yet. If you happen to have any decants laying around that don't work for you, I would be excited to try anything.   I made a list, but it's just for me to know which I'm eying. Decisions, decisions.....

I have to narrow these down at least a little bit! Unless I decide to just go crazy and have a huge order, which is not out of the question. Maybe if I get my thoughts down, it would help me decide.   Lambs-Wool.....this is a really nice scent, and wears kind of light, so a bottle might be a good thing. I already have one apple scent, Fearful Pleasure, but to me that is a much different kind of scent. FP is more musky and smokey, whereas Lambs-Wool is bright and springy. It's complex and unusual. If I get a bottle, I almost certainly wouldn't need any more apple scents!   Sarah.....I loved this at first, and I want to make sure it's not a false alarm, that I really do love it, before getting a bottle. At first I thought I hadn't smelled anything like it before, but now it is starting to remind me of things like On Darkness, Ghulheim, and one other dark scent that I can't put a name to right now. I still like Sarah, though. I'm just not sure if I need a whole bottle or not.   Julia Stone.....I love this one! When I first discovered Bpal, Dirty was one of the first scents I tried, and in the end, I just didn't like the linen note. So from then on, I thought linen wasn't for me. Well guess what. Julia Stone is a linen-y scent that I actually can wear! I'll have to try it a couple more times to be sure, and as long as it doesn't turn powdery, I would love a bottle. It's really fun to discover that I can wear linen after all!   Feeding The Dead.......I love this one too (damn it)!! The one drawback to this one is there is a limit on where I would wear it. For example, I don't think I'd wear it to work, not just because of the beer, but because I usually avoid the more incense-y blends at work (I just don't think it's real appropriate for my job). But....I really enjoy smelling this, even just wearing it at home, as a comfort scent. I've discovered that I like cake scents to wear around the house, but I'm even more drawn to the ones that have some interesting twist, which this definitely has.   Knock A Dolly......This sounds sensational, and I have a feeling I must have it. I already have a million kinds of incense and tarts that I haven't been using, but this would be my first BPTP room spray. I do have a couple of little samples of their room sprays, and I do like them. So, I may end up kicking myself later if I let this one pass by.   A couple of the late summer scents are calling to me too, but so many of them have rose, which could turn soapy or powdery, so I may pass those up (even though I might regret it). I just have to accept that I can't get everything, and I think the Halloween scents are more important to me.   So......that didn't really help. All I did was come closer to buying all of them instead of narrowing down my choices!

BEET KETCHUP! : What is one thing you would like to learn more about that you haven't already? Spanish. Norwegian. Sewing. Knitting! Printmaking. Painting.   What is your favorite cookie type? Chocolate chip, PB chocolate chip, oatmeal chocolate chip, chocolate chocolate chip...and the occasional gingersnap. icon_biggrin.gif oh and mint chocolate sandwich. or thin mints/thin mint knockoffs. oh and Milanos, mint or plain. I have a weakness for Milanos. specially since they fall in the "really unhealthy" junk food category for me, as opposed to the mildly unhealthy (sugar etc AND hydrogenated oil, unless they've changed their formula.) I love homemade cookies, and I don't care much for raisins or fruit in my cookies. There. I think I've covered the cookie subject.   BPTP: Well, I haven't looked at it in a while, but now I have...so...aside from the Pumpkin Pie bath oil which I am in a decant circle for, I'm also interested in the Patentia and Luxuria bath oils. But I wouldn't say I'm lusting over anything.   for the record. I am not that into beets. Please don't send me beets. But I would be interested in a red velvet cake recipe that uses beet for color. I love red velvet cake. (Exception: I do sometimes enjoy borscht.) (and when I do make borscht, I get distracted by how pretty beets look when you peel them...and I always have to take pictures of the patterns they make.) (well, and ok, I've had pickled beets, and the description of the roasted beets sounded kinda good...so I guess I do occasionally like beets. I give.) the knitted beet is cute. I like the idea of knitted veggies.   Do you like to find out there's a package on the way or to receive a tracking number to stalk, or do you prefer surprise packages? I do like stalking, maybe because I am a control freak? But I would want to know something was on the way so that IN CASE it didn't make it and then my witch never heard from me...oh noes!!   alcohol: I'm not a big drinker. I seem to prefer my drinks sweet (and I often say that given the choice between alcohol and sugar, I will choose sugar.) That said, I do enjoy a good wine (usually white), hard cider, mead, sake (you see a theme here, the theme is Sweet.) I'm not a big beer fan but I occasionally like beers that are more malty/smooth, not hoppy. I tend to like wheat beers, it seems.   if i were your witch, and i wanted to make you a spell or mojo bag, would you be into that? and, if you were, would you want it for something like love, prosperity or luck? or would you want it for a certain element? or would you want it for something more personal- and what might that be? Health and energy!! I also do not know much about mojo bags. But that is what I am focused on right now.   ok so...is it bad to have a graphic in my sig? I'm feeling bad now. I know mine is kind of too big. Is it annoying people? Bard, I love the beet icon, even if I don't love beets!   I have checked the spam filter, though I already received the ecard from my witch...a Monty Python card...I hope mentioning it on the thread was enough! I didn't really see a way to reply to an ecard. And I hope I am not a disappearing witchee...I don't think so...I think I am being a good witchee...in fact I'm probably overwhelming my Witch with all my wants and gimme gimmees. (Did I mention that greed was my deadly sin?) (srsly although I do have some weird issues about asking for things, it is offset by the knowledge that I enjoy the giving even more than the getting. And I know that if my witch enjoys the giving and spoiling as much as I do, the best thing to do is to give my witch lots of options. (refrains from using female pronoun with respect for the man in the round. man or men?)   I also want to let my witch know-I indicated on my amazon wish list that for all the CDs I would like, used is perfectly ok-but for most of them, copies are fine too! I keep meaning to say that but forgetting.

Alien comics

I bought a book of the Alien comics (comic books compiled into a softcover book, 'Omnibus'). The story starts up after Aliens, but the characters' names are changed, and Ripley isn't in it. Actually only Newt and Hicks are in them. Anyway, good story, alternate sequel material, and I haven't read a comic in ages, so it's kind of fun. The last comic books I got into were Eightball but that's been a few years.   There are a couple more volumes of the Alien Omnibus, I might keep following the story, we'll see.   Oh and I tried Melainis again today.....just doesn't work for me, due to the black musk I think. Just too blecch papery powdery and reminds me of Haunted. Another one for my swaps if they ever get off the ground.

Would you like a rollerball bottle made from oil in my own bottle in it? of course! What are your thoughts on Incense? I love Nag Champa so much! Also the Wildberry brand incense's Strawberry. What about handbags/totes/clutches? I have plenty of purses (perhaps too many) though I do need a good bookbag messenger bag (I am currently using a diaper bag for school ) Are there any particular movies you want on DVD? yes! Dancer in the Dark would be amazing. As would be Coraline. What about stickers?? stickers are awesome, especially cutesy Japanese kawaii stickers or just Sanrio ones. Do you just need anything from the Possets update? nah. I don't even have enough for BPAL at the moment Do you use henna at all (hair or skin)? Yes! I dye my hair with Body Art Quality henna. usually from hennaforhair.com, Punjabi Prime. I've been thinking of going dark brown though with indigo. What about 2010 Wall calenders? ******9/8***** What was your favouritest job ever, and why? Teaching (college-level). I get really excited about interacting with students when they're tuned in and engaged, and I love being there for the click moment when suddenly the get it -- and more often than not, I learn from my students, too.   Which three albums would you take to your apocalypse bolt hole and how would you power the generator? Answered in thread.   What GC scent have you been putting off getting since it'll "always be there"? Answered in thread.   Are you interested in things like home remedies for ailments, cleaning solutions, etc.? Definitely! Especially if you've got anything for mosquito bites... (Yesterday afternoon/evening was so lovely that I thought I'd spend some time in the back yard reading and watching the doggies cavort. I lit up the anti-mosquito tiki torches... but that didn't keep them from munching on my feet. Present count: 11 bites on my right foot, 10 bites on my left.
