smokey188 Report post Posted October 8, 2008 The essence of pleasure heightened by pain: the raw scent of leather. This was all leather jacket on me and not in a good way I layered it with Anne Bonnie in the hopes of saving it but alas all that did was turn Anne Bonnie into a porn pirate. Sadly this is a big miss for me as it makes me feel sick just smelling it.
Razoth Report post Posted October 26, 2008 I've always loved leather notes in the other BPAL imps I've gotten, so I knew I had to try this one. The result? Most satisfying. Not too bitter or oily or tar-like - this is the blissful smell of GOOD leather, the kind you just want to roll in and stick your nose right next to it. Definitely getting a big bottle of this ASAP. maika Report post Posted October 28, 2008 In the imp, yup, it's leather...very raw, and very...ummm...well used. Nothing polished and pretty about this scent. Wet, oh my...yes it's leather...with a hint of something else. I'm not quite sure what, but maybe it will make it's presence known on the drydown. Dry, I've worked out what the extra note is...it's smoke! This is VERY interesting, but definitely a masculine smell...not to worry though, I think I know who needs to have it... rayvn1 Report post Posted November 3, 2008 I love the lab's leather scents, so an imp of pure leather just HAD to be a winner with me It's perfect too, other than that it fades very quickly on me. Stays around long enough to get me all worked up though Fantastic!
melrose Report post Posted November 10, 2008 First on: Doesn't smell like leather, but very fresh, like I'm outside on a breezy day near a herb garden. There is something underneath, though, that's unknown to my nose but quite intriguing. Middle drydown: Gorgeous - here's the leather with some spicy goodness overlaying it. If this holds, De Sade is in my top 5 for sure. Far drydown: Well, crap. Stupid skin chemistry. Now it smells like generic men's cologne, with an undercurrent of that squicky aquatic-ozone note that is proving so problematic for me. I think De Sade calls for a scent locket to keep my skin chemistry from messing up this glorious scent.
Wwindy Report post Posted November 16, 2008 Holy morphing magic powers, BPAL! Wet, De Sade was SMOKE SMOKE SMOKE and MORE SMOKE on my skin, very much like the smoky scent/flavor you get in good Lapsang Souchong. Right around the time I was about to give the concept of leather up as a lost cause, abracadabra presto chango! Ta-da! It's a leather coat! I'd actually say this *isn't* a Coach bag or pair of high-end boots or an aged jacket -- to me it smells more like newish mid-range leather. To be specific, like maybe you just went out and bought a new flogger. (Not that I know what that smells like, Mom, honest!) ... Oh. Well, of course it would. O hai Beth, I see what you did there! This doesn't have a huge amount of throw and fades out fairly quickly, but it's certainly evocative while it lasts!
desertwaya Report post Posted November 17, 2008 raw leather it is,but not the kind i care to smell like. i liked western diamondback and quincy morris better. i even liked whip better! i got this imp for my husband which also felt the same, its just too sharp. although someone else might like it..if their into SnM. elinox Report post Posted November 24, 2008 First Sniff: Holy cow! Tangy and it burns my nostrils! Wet: Much the same as the first sniff, although now it's starting to smell like very new leather mixed with some sort of cleaning agent. Dry: As it dries it begins to get more subtle, but the tangyness is still there. I'm hoping as time passes for a softer leather smell to come through. The longer it was on my skin, the older the leather smelled, which I liked. I also smelled something like smoke on it, interesting. My Reaction: Way too strong up front, but as it dried it became pleasant enough. Probably not something that I will wear often, but it was fascinating how it started out with a new leather smell and then faded to an older leather smell the longer I wore it. Persephone76 Report post Posted November 25, 2008 WOW!! This stuff is sooo good I cannot believe I have not tried it already! It's a slightly more masculine and smoky version of Spanked. The man loves it* and lordy does it smell hot on him. Sex on wheels. Wowowwow. A stunner and if I ever run out of Spanked, I will hoard this like there's no tomorrow! 5/5 *this is the same man who normally gags when he sniffs perfume, claims to not like fragrance, and said (in a most loving way) that I need "professional help" for my perfume addiction. De Sade is the first thing he ever asked me to get for him (no complaints here!).
blacklacestatic Report post Posted November 26, 2008 This will probably be the shortest review i've ever written. De Sade smells like leather. Real, true, saddle up and ride leather. In the imp, wet on skin, and in the drydown. Absolutely leather. This is good news for those of you who like the smell of leather. I definitely do not. I applaud the creation of this scent because it definitely suites it's namesake. However, I will not be wearing this again.
stefrand Report post Posted December 8, 2008 (this was tried on my DH) ITI: Astringent, sour leather. Almost a leather single note, I guess. Wet: A bit sour at first. Musty, sour leather. This isn't soft, buttery leather, but something a little harsher and newer. It makes me think of a new soccer ball or something. A new baseball glove. Dry: Raw, new leather. Shoe leather. Not sexy...cold and sour. Drydown: Nope. Same Thoughts: Not for D!
dreadpiraterustypants2 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 (edited) On me wrists this one's quite smokey. Not just pure leather, he's walzed around the bar 'til three~ I'm going to cut in...... Edited January 8, 2009 by dreadpiraterustypants2
puddingirl Report post Posted January 10, 2009 I got this as a frimp and am excited as I've never tried anything with leather in it before. In the bottle , wow! I almost swooned. My OH has a leather coat which he wears in spring/autumn. This smells like him when he's wearing his Davidoff Cool Water and wearing the coat. I have to admit that it totally does it for me (memories of us getting together). Ok, I'll try to stop being giddy and give this a go on me. Who cares if it doesn't smell nice, I just want to sniff it out of the bottle, or try it on Him maybe? When wet I can smell something black and smokey, I'm assuming leather? A bit of gunpowder perhaps. Not my scene, we'll see what happens when it dries. When dry it's too masculine for me. I'll attack the OH with it.
stellans Report post Posted February 3, 2009 (edited) Whoa. As described by the Lab, De Sade is "The essence of pleasure heightened by pain: the raw scent of leather." Well, yes. It is that. But there is a definite undernote of a man in fresh leather breeches, who has just completed his morning's toilet. The fresh washed, shaven, and dressed man scent that pretty much always makes me weak in the knees. I really, really like this leather scent...but on Mr. Stellans, not me. I truly love the smell of good leather, but not as my perfume. For myself, Spanked is my personal go-to leather scent, followed by an aged and mellow bottle of Western Diamondback. There are some BPAL blends which are considered to be masculine scents that I actually like (Whitechapel, for instance) on me, but De Sade is definitely not one of them; it will remain a male scent. So, I'll keep the imp for the Mr., but unless he asks for it, I won't look for more or buy a bottle. ETA: OK, I should have edited this review sooner, but whoa, has my mind been changed about De Sade! As that ubiquitous Irish Spring ad says, "Strong enough for a man, but I like it too!" The pure leather in this blend is just so appealing that I was lucky enough to score a bottle before it was discontinued, and then bought another from a forumite to boot so I shall be in lovely, lovely leather for some time to come. De Sade really is the purest leather blend I own, as the others all seem to have a little side fragrance aiding and abetting their enchantment. De Sade is walking into a leather goods store. De Sade is making that leather wallet in scouts. De Sade is love. Edited December 6, 2009 by stellans
asciident Report post Posted February 25, 2009 Wet: Roses? and leather... First on: Just pure leather. Dry: New car smell! Great smell, not a great perfume.
Twitch Report post Posted February 28, 2009 In the bottle: Leather with an acrid blood undertone. Immediately on the skin: Leather and alcohol. Dry: Smoky and leathery. The alcohol stays in the background, but I still get some sort of rum or brandy somewhere. I really do love this scent, it's so comforting while also being sexy and manly. For some reason I think I'd like this on a woman as well, though, or a horse, or a paper bag. Anything will do really, so long as I can take the occasional whiff. unlaced Report post Posted March 13, 2009 raw. black. leather. ...nnngh... *drool* why did I think I didn't like this? I'm soooo glad I kept my imp around and let it age. I didn't like it originally but now, 1+ yrs later it's pure As people have said before, I think this would be a great layering scent to put with other things to dirty them up a little bit. *ponders the possibilities* I'm thinking this will be the scent for me when I'm seriously trying to get the boy's attention... Now I wonder how it would smell on him?
savage_rose Report post Posted March 24, 2009 It smells like leather and vetiver on some really, sweaty old man with a bad toupee, trying to pick up a woman barely in her twenties. It smells like money, sweaty, old money. Too masculine for me, and not a version of masculinity I find appealing.
topaz Report post Posted March 28, 2009 Back in my mall rat days, I used to go to the leather shop just to breathe. I think part of why I always liked dating the "bad boys" was the fact that I always got to snuggle up to a leather coat . This scent is drool inducing! If the movie Young Guns could be a scent, this would be it!
catatonic1242 Report post Posted March 31, 2009 In the imp: Dark, musty leather. This is *not* a new leather jacket kind of smell. On, wet: Leather, obviously. Very male. Masculine. Sexy. Dark. On, dry: So, I like this, but I'm not sure that it'll work very well on me. It's a bit more masculine than I usually wear, plus it's just such a single note and not very complex. I could see using this as a layering note combined with almost anything that needs a little masculine leathery touch.
tragedy Report post Posted April 17, 2009 (edited) I bought this one because I love the smell of leather and the hubbys standard retail bought colognes were driving me nuts.. I LOVE IT!!!! love it so much... Smells like leather through and through in the bottle? leather... wet? leather ...drydown? leather BUT...it has this odd mystery drifting in and out scent that I adore way more than just the smell of leather. My favorite all time male scent!!! (edit: cause I'm stupid and didnt realize this was GC *laughs*) Edited May 1, 2009 by tragedy
ShadowsDance Report post Posted April 30, 2009 It's leather! Really.. not much to say about it. It's definitely leather on my skin, but it doesn't come off as too strong.. I would not say this is necessarily a very masculine scent either, at least not on me. Very nice, and I'll definitely be keeping the imp.. Seems like it may have some nice layering properties as well.
Ceri Report post Posted June 2, 2009 In the vial: Leather with a tad of man's cologne. Wet: New leather. Dry: This has transformed from the smell of new leather to that of a smoky, well-worn leather. Overall: A bit too strong for me but I would love to test it on the boy.
tinyvulture Report post Posted June 7, 2009 100% leather…a great replacement for my bottle of Dead Man’s Hand that I foolishly parted ways with. There’s something a little sweaty and dirty about it, but not in a bad way. Like a leather jacket that’s taken on the owner’s scent, maybe. This scent is not super strong, but up close it’s very sexy.
donnatron Report post Posted June 9, 2009 Imp: Leather and running water. Wet: Leather. A sort of dry, warm leather jacket sort of scent. The water scent lingers. Dry: This is kind of bizarre. I was out with a few friends on Friday evening and it was raining. I shared my umbrella with a friend who didn't have one. He was wearing a leather jacket. This smells exactly like walking with him in the rain. A strong leather scent, a touch of smoke and then a faint, misty scent in the background. So weird. Throw: Mild. Overall: Having just experience C. Auguste Dupin I have to admit that I think De Sade is a bit of a wussy leather in comparison to that LEATHER OF ALL LEATHERS!!! scent. But it's nice, kind of strangely evocative and I think it will be useful for layering. Definitely an interesting experience.
