BPAL

  • Favorite Scents
I'm very new to BPAL but so far my favorites have been: Lightning, Succubus, Nuit, and Ophellia While I wouldn't actually wear the latter 3 scents because they are fairly feminine, I really appreciate their complexity and overall deliciousness. ^_^ I hope to find more "masculine" scents for myself soon.

    Ulalume

Ulalume in the bottle: I get earth and plant life. It may be the leaves. I'm assuming the sweetness is the lillies. It's difficult to smell through them. Wet: Something about this is very familiar to another scent I recently smelled. Either Eve or Succubus. The aquatic is definitely coming through now. I'm getting a bit of cleaning fluid as well. Maybe the pineyness of the cypress? Dry: The cleaning fluid scent is gone. Very pleasant now. The aquatic as well as the lily seems to be the predominant notes now. After a few hours: Lilies are still strong. The scent has diminished much. Overall: Nice, but not WOW. 3.5/5

    Séance

Séance in the bottle: Really interesting. Familiar, yet I'm not sure how to describe it. Wet: I definitely get a sense of the warm hazel. I think the scent could do without it though. I really like the crushed rose leaf and rosewood. Very clean, earthy, and soothing. Dry: As it dries it's becoming a bit floral, powdery, and feminine. Definitely better in the bottle, but, still quite nice and pleasant. After a few hours: Green comes through every so often. I think the warmth of the hazel is gone. I get a bit of cedar as well, like, hampster cage lining cedar. Later I started getting hints of crayon. Overall: certain aspects of the scent were wonderful, at my last sniff séance become powder, but, there were definitely great things about it. 3.5 out of 5

    Saint-Germain

Saint-Germain in the bottle: I'm definitely getting men's cologne. Sophisticated, probably something Ralph Lauren. The only thing I was able to truly pick out was the spiciness of the carnation. Wet: It smells a little like a mix of colognes… it reminds me of being in the men's locker room with all the soaps and deodorants and colognes mingling in with the overall humidity/steaminess. Hmm, smells somewhat like a lighter, more subdued version of Joop! Dry: Love it! I love what the mosses do to the scent, it adds a strange dampness to it… which sort of amps the locker room feel. After a few hours: Lasted about 2 and a half hours before turning into a perfumey powder. Overall: I wouldn't mind more staying time, but, overall I LOVE this. Even more than Wilde. It still reminds me of Joop! But a more wearable version (Joop! Tends to be too strong and incense-y). 5 out of 5.

    Eve

Eve in the bottle: The apple and the rose stand out the most. Wet: All the notes are quite distinct. They blend very well. Something in it is very bright and almost citrusy. It's a nice scent. Dry: This is a great scent. I'm not too fond of rose, so maybe a little less would be awesome. But, this is really awesome. Overall: Really great blend. 3.5/5
  5. simplethings

    Blood Pearl

Blood Pearl in the bottle: Smooth, but a bit astringent. I think I can smell vanilla. Wet: Hmmm, slightly floral… not by much though. A different kind of floral. I don't smell coconut. Dry: pleasing. I think the coconut comes off as vanilla on me. This isn't something I'd wear, but, it has really great qualities. Smelling it is relaxing to me. After a few hours: The scent is still nice but becoming somewhat powdery. Overall: 2.5 out of 5. Nothing really in here that I love.

    Bliss

Bliss in the bottle: very toasted nutty. Wet: very slight chocolate with many toasted almonds Dry: the chocolate is coming through but it smells very artificial. Still very nutty. Overall: meh. =( the chocolate in this smells too... artificial to me... and the nuttiness of this is too much for me. I'm curious to try other chocolate scents.

    Black Pearl

Black Pearl in the bottle: Something about Black Pearl has a alcohol-based-perfume smell to it. I got a few whiffs of hazelnut. Wet: The hazelnut stands out to me the most. I think the alcohol-perfume note might be the iris. There's very slight coconut in the background. Dry: I'm thinking it's maybe a combo of the iris and musk that produce the alcohol-y-perfume… I really have to smell behind it to get the warm hazelnut and coconut. After a few hours: The warm nuttiness completely disappeared after an hour. The iris and musk stayed a bit longer but later became a very pleasant powder scent. Overall: Pleasant, but, too feminine. Would've LOVED more hazelnut staying power. 2.5/5

    Arachne

I'm glad I got an imp of this before it became discontinued. It's a pleasant smell although not one of my favorites. Arachne in the bottle: Very light florals, clean and crisp. Wet: Still floral to me… reminds me of a toy I used to play with. No idea what it was though. I can't get the scent long enough to complete the association. Dry: I'm sort of getting cleaning/laundry aisle @ walmart. Overall: 3 out of 5. A pleasing smell, but, a little too chemical and generic.
  9. simplethings

    Antique Lace

Antique Lace in the bottle: I smell a touch of vanilla. The rest of the lab's description is spot on. Wet: Very soft. But not in the sense that it disappears. It's definitely there, it's just that the scent itself feels soft. I'm still getting that vanilla smell, it's on the verge of cocoa butter. The description takes care of the remainder of the scent. Dry: The scent is now a cloudy, perfumed, subdued vanilla. Very feminine, a bit on the strong side. Overall: 2.5 out of 5. It's not a bad smell, but, it's definitely too feminine and perfume-y for me.

    Envy

Envy in the bottle: Mint comes out to me the most. It smells like a mojito. Wet: The mint is the dominant scent, I can also smell the lavender, it adds a nice "softness" to the mix. Still totally mojito. Dry: Completely mojito. When I sniff I can almost taste the sour tang of the lime and mint... and vodka. The scent has become much quieter though, I think my skin is drinking it all up. Through a few hours: Envy has maintained its integrity. Didn't turn to powder on me (as most scents do) nor did it make any drastic changes. The lavender was in and definitely kept the mint and lime from becoming too strong. Overall it's a nice scent. I'm not sure I'd want to smell like a mojito all the time, but, it can be quite refreshing. More like, walking through one of those mist things on a HOT day at Six Flags refreshing... rather than... slamming into a river of water in a boat ride at Six Flags refreshing. Envy is definitely a scent I'll have to often reapply though, my skin really drank it up.

    Lightning

Lightning slashing the midnight skies over the endless reaches of the ocean. The electric tang of ozone, marine notes, and a drop of sharp rain. Lightning in the bottle: Very clean and green. Slightly floral. Wet: The green note is the most predominant. Cleanliness remains as does a very slight floral background. Dry: The green note divides into distinct ozone and water. Floral scents offer sweetness. Through a few hours: Scent remained the same. Overall, I love it. It's clean and fresh, I'm definitely ordering more of this.
  12. simplethings

    Jolly Roger

Jolly Roger in the bottle: I get a very light and delicate rose. Salty in the background. Wet: The rose is gone, I think I'm smelling a sweet, toned down leather. I still get salt but now I also can smell the ocean. Dry: Something about this scent is strange to me. I think I'm getting sun block--not the coconut type though it's the "unscented" type. Also a hint of plastic tents. Through a few hours: Reminds me of a facial lotion my mother used when I was younger. The scent became more feminine and slightly powdery on me. Overall, Jolly Roger went through huge transformations. Sadly, none of its phases really appealed to me.
  13. simplethings

    Wilde

Wilde in the bottle: Smells like a very familiar men's fragrance. I want to say Curve or Candies for men. I'm unable to pick out any individual notes. Wet: Thyme and jasmine instantly pop through. Still very familiar. Dry: As it dries the thyme and jasmine notes blend back into the same scent as the bottle. Through a few hours: Wilde seemed to become slightly sweeter, but for the most part remained the same. Overall, I like it. But at the same time it's a fragrance that I smell often at the cologne counters at any department store.
  14. simplethings

    Black Forest

Black forest in the bottle: There's this Christmas potpurri my mom had when I was younger. That's Black Forest. Wet: The pine is the strongest note. Something about it is very sweet and woody. Maybe the cypress? I'd actually lean more towards cedar. I get a hint of musk as well. Dry: Now that it's dry I get the pine with something smooth and milky in the back, maybe slightly vanilla. Through a few hours: Whiffs of baby diapers--unused. =( Also, pine. Overall, it started out pretty pleasant but later turned somewhat rancid. Maybe it's my body chemistry. I can see this being used as a room fragrance during Christmas.

    Alice

Alice in the bottle: Floral and sweet. There's something very "open" about the smell. Wet: Slightly spicy florals. Maybe cinnamon? A very smooth vanilla/milk-ish background. Dry: Rose is the only note I can pick up. It's very well blended, however because Rose usually makes me gag but here it smells delicious. There's definitely something that's adds a bit of spice. Despite being very feminine it's quite pleasing. Through a few hours: Maintained its pleasantness but turned to powder at the end. Overall, very nice and mellow but too feminine for me.
