    Changing the Shadows

i notice the orange blossom most of all, softened by vanilla. this is more perfumey and more floral than the oils i typically enjoy, but i'm trying to expand my horizons. good for my nose, not for my wallet. there is a fresh flower note to this that is quite nice. i don't notice a lot of sandalwood, but i think i can detect it in the background, rounding out the whole thing. sadly, the red tea and mate notes that inspired me to buy this in the first place are totally absent for me.

An Altar to Cold, Rigid, Dreadful Death

MMM. dark, dusty wood and church incense. this is not as resinous as midnight mass (one of my perennial favorites)- it's dustier and drier. the wood, to my nose, is not as sharp as cathedral. it's very well-blended and is a welcome addition to my "bpals that smell like incense" collection!

The Second of the Three Spirits

this is a perfect christmas scent for me. there is pine, but it is not the dark, resinous or woodsy kind that i amp like crazy. it's exactly what it says in the description- fresh pine boughs hung up as decorations and an array of delicious, seasonal food and drink. pine, a touch of citrus, nuts and spiced fruits. it reminds me a bit of hearth 2005, but much less heavy and with fresher, fruitier components. i think this is more like what i wanted whoop to be, and i am very pleased.

    Mother Ginger

this is not at all a baked goods sort of ginger- it's creamy and sweet! it reminds me of fresh ginger ice cream- light, cool and sweet. it is somewhat like opuhi, an atomic tiki lounge le i've always loved, but even cooler and lighter. not at all what i was expecting, and so delightful.

    What scents are masculine? Gender-neutral?

Vicomte de Valmont is my favorite bpal for my fiancé to wear. it smells WONDERFUL on him! peeking through his bpal collection, he has two 5mls of that, as well as Wilde, Calico Jack and Galvanic Goggles. Calico Jack is very sexy, salty and rugged; the other three are more of the 'refined genetleman' sort.

    The Red Rider

wow! i never would have tried the red rider if the lab hadn't sent me a frimp in a recent order, and it is so very me. the red leather note is beautiful- it smells more authentic to me than the sort of shiny, almost-fake patent leather scent i get from something like brom bones (though i also love that one). this is also a very nostalgic scent for me because it reminds me VERY strongly of kitschy gift shops in the wisconsin dells that i visited as a child- you know, filled with tacky buckskin pouches and wooden boxes painted with cheesy pictures of wolves. i love it and i am ordering a 5ml.

    All In The Golden Afternoon

fizzy amber with strong floral notes. how does a perfume smell fizzy? i have no idea, but this does. it reminds me a lot of hymn to proserpine, actually, although that one isn't, you know, carbonated!

    Bliss

mm. bliss, to me, smells like a really good cocoa powder. it's making me want a cup of hot chocolate!
  9. i'm looking for a creamy citrus scent to replace a beloved chaos theory that i idiotically spilled all over the couch/my fiancé's iphone/myself earlier this evening. it's from last year's amber series, so there is definitely a soft, mild amber note, underlying a sweet, creamy lemon. the lemon itself is lovely- a sort of fresh, true lemon zest/juice sort of scent, sweetened by sugar. it almost smells like creamy lemon frosting, but it is not particularly foodie. i really love it and i'm so sad i lost it all!

    The Rat King

the description on this one is very accurate, to me. there's a sawdusty smell and something sharp and metallic (this part almost turns soapy after a while... weird). sadly, i don't think the rat king is a favorite of mine.

    The Arabian Dance

beautiful. this is a very warm scent. it doesn't have a lot of throw, but close to the skin, it's just gorgeous. the leather is very subtle, underneath the nutty coffee and warm spices. the notes blend together so fabulously that it's hard to pick them out individually. very sexy.

    The Phoenix in Spring

i love this one SO much. the dandelion is the most prominent note for me, and it is just wonderful, against a beautiful backdrop of myrrh that grounds the scent and keeps it from being all cloyingly floral. i definitely need a second bottle of this. gorgeous and unexpected!

    Sugar Plum Fairy

Queen of the Kingdom of Sweets: sugar plums, vanilla-infused sugar, tiare, amber musk, apricot peel, and a light dusting of cacao. at first, there is a definite watermelon candy thing going on, under a creamy amber/vanilla/musk, just slightly powdery, but as it dries the plum comes out. i love plum; it's one of the only fruit notes i can wear! it is a clean, pleasant scent and wears close to the skin.

    Bedbug

i laughed when i found bedbugs (the IMPS, not the actual bugs! ) in my nycc bag, because my fiancé and i were kind of worried about our trip to nyc after hearing about the apparent bedbug epidemic there (and before going to the con, we had checked into our hotel room and thoroughly inspected our mattress, haha). this is a fantastic scent, like yummy gingerbread cookies and tea! i love it!

    The Lady of Lake Ronkonkoma

hmm. aquatics are not generally my thing, and this is probably my least favorite of my nycc purchases. the sweetgrass is really nice but the flowery wateriness of it all is not good on my skin.

    The Elephantine Colossus

ooooh! elephantine colossus smells like musky, sexy cookies with a splash of root beer. it's wonderful, and i think it will age beautifully. i'm glad i got, um, 3 bottles. edit: three months later, this has already aged fantastically. i smell like an idealized carnival (you know, food and treats and a ferris wheel, minus the occasional whiff of vomit and, um, "carny musk"), with red musk, root beer and a hint of foody goodness- like funnel cake being served up at a cute, colorful stand. i adore this!

Mount Misery and Sweet Hollow Roads

mmm, i love this one. for once, the spruce does not overwhelm the other notes with crazy pineyness and all of the notes combine to create a really atmospheric, well-blended perfume. in the bottle, it smells like a forest at night. on my skin, there is a hint of smoke and nut against a backdrop of fresh-smelling spruce, with the cool scent of fresh earth rounding it off. perfect for fall.

The White Lady of Durand Eastman Park

this has changed a lot as it's aged, or at least since i first reviewed it. it's a really interesting scent. i am not a fan of the jasmine, which is a bit sour on me, but i've never quite smelled anything like this- light florals and tea with a bitter cacao heart. i think jasmine and i just don't personally get along.

    The Lincoln Tunnel Vortex

a fresh, soapy scent. VERY strong, with something sharp and sweetish on top, and a heavy powderiness underneath. it smells clean, maybe a little masculine.

    When the Winter Chrysanthemums Go

i didn't expect to like this. i don't really know what a chrysanthemum is supposed to smell like, but from this blend i get a light, pleasant floral with a soft, sweet-cold snow note. it's not my usual thing, but i'm so pleased to have a snow scent work on me that i just might keep it.

But Men Loved Darkness Rather Than Light

an instant favorite. rich, slightly spicy, with a note like sweet, dark fruit and warm woods. i adore this and i think i need a second bottle. (also my bf just walked over, smelled me and proclaimed "that is HOT.")

    Evening Cicadas and Red Peppers

oh no. i wanted to like this soooooo much, but it's all sickly florals on my skin. the camelia just completely overpowers everything else!

    The Black Temple Burlesque Troupe

black temple burlesque troupe is wonderful. it reminds me very much of boomslang, but less spicy and more musky. i can't wait for it to age! chocolate usually doesn't work on me- but the very dark cacao in this is perfect and blends with the rich tobacco so well. my only complaint is that it stains my wrists dark brown!

    Werepuppy

all i get is sickly, sweetened milk that might be slightly spoiled. *sigh* alas, werepuppy is not for me.

Invasion of the Flesh-Eating Reindeer from Uranus

this is GREAT. on me it's mostly musk, a LOT of musk, with a side of gingerbread spice. it is NOT foody at all. it's quite sexy. the musk is a bit sharp, but i think this ill mellow beautifully. i definitely need a second bottle of this one.
