    Bengal

I was pretty nervous about trying this because cinnamon and musk can both be a bit iffy on me, plus I seem to amp them to the high heavens, but I'm so happily surprised! The stand out note for me is actually the honey and it reminds me a lot of O. Actually, this smells like if you mixed O and Morocco and then sprinkled the result with a heap of black pepper and cinnamon. The dry down is pretty much spicy honey on a background of warm musk and I like it a lot. Yay, I think this the first spice blend that's really worked on me!
  2. I'm seconding Dragon's Milk for my first pick. It's so rich and warm and sweet, I swear sometimes I even get this slightly smoky boozy vibe, it's just so so good! Second pick would probably have to be Snake Oil, just because it's a BPAL classic.

    Un

Wet, Un has a super strong cherry/ almond candy vibe. I'm not a huge fan of that weird almond association I get with cherry sometimes but thankfully it doesn't last long! As it dries down the rose comes out, red and a little bit dry. I actually like this scent best once I've it had it on for about an hour or so, it kind of settles into this super nice rose candy scent- the image I get in my head is of a clear rose flavoured boiled sweet. I like it a lot but I wish the cherry stuck around longer. I do get the Rose Jam comparison but I actually don't find them that similar. I find Un a much darker, dryer rose while Rose Jam is fresher and lighter. Plus Rose Jam has that hint of lemon, which this definitely does not have! Still, if you like Rose Jam you'll probably enjoy Un as well.

    Sept

In the bottle and wet on my skin this smells like sweet rose petals, buttery shortbread cookie crumbs and marshmallow all mixed up together; I think it's the frankincense/ vanilla combo giving me the cookie vibe, had a similar thing happen with Alisz. The cookie smell does die down once dry which I'm happy about, and I end up with a very sweet, warm rose scent with a comforting (non-cookie) frankincense background. I think I prefer the yellow rose to red as red can be a bit dry on me, but yellow seems lighter and more sweet.

    Earth Dog

This is my first time trying one of the Chinese New Year blends so I don't know how this compares to the others, but this one is absolutely lovely! In the bottle it smells a little woody, very fresh, green, citrusy and slightly sweet. Straight on this is quite fruity and sweet from the peach and lychee, with the citrus in the background. Very quickly these notes calm down and the patchouli comes out. I'm usually not a big fan of patchouli and sadly, also seem to tend to amp it hugely, but in this blend it actually stays really well behaved! It's quite a green woody patchouli, not dirty at all, and is very nice combined with the citrus and sweet fruit on top. After around half an hour the patchouli settles down as well and I'm left with a fresh, clean scent that reminds me a lot of Lush Karma. If I were to compare the two I would say Karma is a bit sweeter and more high-pitched then Earth Dog, and also has bit more of a soapy undertone. Earth Dog is richer, more complex and has a more pronounced woody/ incense base. I do like Earth Dog slightly more, mainly because it is less soapy, but honestly I find them very similar and it's good to know there's an alternative if I ever run out! I'd say if you like citrus and patchouli scents, or if you like Karma and want a BPAL alternative, definitely give Earth Dog a shot, it's great!

    Van Van

This smells a lot like this sachet of lemon-honey chamomile tea I've had in my tea jar for ever- warm, herbal, citrusy and kind of dusty... The honey is very subtle, just provides some gentle sweetness in the background. I found it a bit too musty and medicinal smelling to enjoy at first, but that dissipated after an hour or so and I was left with a pretty mild lemon and herbs scent. Still, not really something I feel much desire to wear again- I think I actually would have preferred it more if the lemon came off a bit fresher smelling on my skin. As it is it's just too medicinal for me!

    Lick It With Consent (2016)

I adore mint and vanilla as a scent combo, so I've been wanting to try a Lick It for ages! In the bottle and wet on skin, this is a very realistic candy cane scent- lots of fresh peppermint and sweet, light vanilla. As it dries this kind of woody base comes out, grounding the scent. In the end it settles down into this sweet woody vanilla, with a hint of peppermint. I really enjoy all the phases of this one, use it a lot when I want something simple and non-floral.

    Cheshire Cat

Received Cheshire Cat as a frimp and would never have picked it from the notes, but I really love it! It's primarily a sweet grapefruit scent on me, with some soft herbs and musk hanging out in the background. I don't usually go for citrus scents because I find them a bit too sharp but the sweetness (maybe from the red currant?) really calms the grapefruit down. I can't really pick out the lavender, chamomile or delphinium on my skin, they just sort of form this cohesive, subtle herby-ness. Really nice, will probably pick up a big bottle for summer as I can see myself wearing this one a lot! Just realised the dark musk is reminding me of Bewitched slightly, but sadly the blackberry in that one made it feel too shampoo-like for me to enjoy.

    Aglaea

Goes on very sweet peach and immediately the musk starts coming out- it smells like red musk to me which concerns me because red musk tends to completely take over on my skin. After 5 minutes or so though the musk starts calming down and the peach is slowly regaining it's footing. Dries down to a strong peach scent, very sweet and slightly boozy. Actually, smells exactly like peach wine Also, the musk stays firmly in the background, yay! ETA: OK, an hour later and yep all red musk. So sad

    Mouse's Long and Sad Tale

Mmm Mouse's Long & Sad Tale is so soft and fuzzy! Lots of sweet pea, sandlewood and amber (I think that's what is giving the fuzz effect) and the tiniest wee dab of vanilla. The sweet pea doesn't really smell particularly floral to me, it's more just this light overlay of sugar, like fairy floss or something. I do really like this one but it is very very light so I usually end up slathering.

    Dragon's Milk

On me, Dragon's Milk is a very sweet, warm dragon's blood scent (smells sort of fruity and cherry-ish, but still resiny) mixed with strong vanilla. When wet it does have a slightly smoky vibe but that disappears after dry down. Love!

    Sugar Plum Fairy v3

In the bottle: The juiciest, gummiest, sweetest plum scent ever! Dried down: Sugary plums dusted with spices (cinnamon?). Stays a little bubblegum-esque. I can't imagine actually wearing this at Christmas since I live in Australia and this will be wayyy too sweet for me to handle in 40 degree heat, but will be a lovely warm sweet, spiced scent for winter!

    Cleric

I've always been a bit afraid of incense scents but Cleric is so soft and pretty, slightly sweet and I really like it! I mainly smell the rose amber, frankincense and myrrh. It's a very calming scent to me and I like to wear it on rainy days. I consider this an intro- incense scent, would definitely recommend if you're nervous about incense like I was.

    Dana O'Shee

Blast of sweet almonds, dries down to an almost identical scent to Alice on me- powdery, sweet milk and honey. It's nice but has much less throw and fades a lot faster then Alice on me, so I'm going to stick with her!

    Glasgow

Glasgow is a very pretty aquatic with a hint of sweetness from the blackberries. I like it for days when I want something light and fresh but not citrussy.

    Kumiho

I'm not sure why but to me, Kumiho smells pretty citrus-y, like grapefruit. It's a very fresh scent, clean without being soapy and slightly astringent (from the tea I guess?). The ginger lends a warming quality, which I like. My mum who loves fresh, citrus scents really likes this one. Personally, I think Kumiho is nice but just not my cup of tea!

    O

Wow, out of all the BPALs I've tried, O has definitely transformed the most with ageing. Fresh, it smelled pretty much like play dough with like this really weird hint of bodily fluids... I put it down to the honey just not working on my skin AT ALL and I've been avoiding honey blends ever since. Then last night I decided to try it again just to see if anything had changed and oh my goodness, it's so good! Wet it smells like actual, real honey. Dry, I get a really beautiful sweet lightly vanilla-ed honey, over a base of slightly powdery amber. Stayed very close to my skin but when I woke up could still smell it, so it did last a long time. Will absolutely have to get into trying more honey blends now, the honey scent in this is so good.

    51

On me, 51 smells quite dry, clean, floral with a woody base. I remember fresh it was much fruitier and I could really pick up on the melon, but a year or so on and all I get is a hint of mandarin. It's much more 'traditional perfume' and less sweet then the scents I typically go for but I do like it, especially in summer when I don't want anything cloying or heavy. It definitely has a dry, desert vibe. If you like Alien I'd say you'll probably enjoy 51!

    Zorya Polunochnaya

This one's an interesting one for me because when I first got it I didn't really like it, there was actually a smell in there that turned my stomach a bit! But 6 months on or so everything seems to have mellowed out and I quite enjoy it now. To me it's a very soft, clean vanilla- I do get the vanilla dryer sheet comparison. But the overall impression I get when I wear it is of drinking a very milky cup of vanilla scented tea, it is so spot on! I pretty much only wear this scent to sleep in because it is so cosy and light, but I could imagine wearing it in winter on a cold rainy day when I can just stay home and chill. Definitely a fluffy jumper scent.

    High-Strung Daisies

Very much bubblegum with a dash of spice and a hint of plastic. Slightly soapy. Not the worst, but not my favourite either. Would definitely choose Jailbait over this if I was in a particularly bubblegummy mood.

    Alisz

I absolutely adore Alisz! When I first got it I put it on straight away and it just smelled of mint, vanilla and biscuits, and then disappeared as soon as it dried down. Now I've had it for a few weeks, it has become much more complex and lasts for a good 6 hours. Wet I get a very sweet mint and vanilla with a slight biscuity/ chocolatey tone to it. Makes me think of a thin mint, mint pattie or similar. As it dries down the mint softens and I start to smell the currants and roses. The rose is soft, subtle and not soapy at all. Dry, on my skin Alisz smells of mint, vanilla, and a hint of rose. Very pretty, the tart currants keep it complex and stop it from smelling too sweet and childish. The frankincense doesn't stand out, but does add this sort of grainy texture to the scent which I enjoy. This is up there with Mouse's Long and Sad Tale as one of my favourite BPAL scents now, I wear it almost every day at the moment and I love it!

    Bewitched

In the imp: Wow extremely green, sharp and strong. No berries at all. I'm a bit nervous about this one! This smells very dark. Wet: The berries are starting to appear and it's becoming a little sweeter but it's still overwhelmed by that very sharp green scent (the sage maybe?). Dry: This kind of reminds me of the smell of Lush bath bombs in general... Like if you smelt a whole bunch at once. The berries do smell sweet but they are almost completely drowned out by that sharp herbal scent which I'm not a fan of. After 1 hour: Awfully, the longer I wear this the more it reminds me of toilet cleaner or air freshener or something I even got my sister to smell my wrist and she said it smelt like toilets so it's not just me! I really thought I would love this one but something in it absolutely doesn't work on me. I wanted delicious tart juicy berries but instead I got cleaning fluid and it makes me sad

    Alice

In the Imp: I can smell a sweet, spicy floral scent with a hint of citrus (I think that's the bergamot). It smells pretty good! Wet: The spicy smell is becoming stronger. I can definitely smell roses now as well. It smells a little like a cup of spicy chai tea without the cinnamon. Dry: As it dries the roses become more prominent. I can't really smell the fresh citrus now at all In fact, this smells just like spicy rose soap. Weirdly I asked my boyfriend what he thought it smelt like and he said soap but then I asked my mum and she said gingerbread so who knows?! I have mixed feelings about Alice! Sometimes I think it smells too soapy and sometimes I think it smells just like a cup of yummy chai and roses. Either way it is a nice soft, comforting scent so I really like wearing this one to bed but I'm not sure I'd buy a bottle of it. ETA 21/4/18: Ok, have to give credit- Alice has become one of my all time favourite BPAL scents and definitely taught me a lot about the power of aging! Fresh it does have a tendency to be a bit sharp and soapy, but aged it's just the most wonderful smooth, sweet, cosy, comforting scent. It opens with the bergamot, but quickly dries down to a sweet, soft honey and milk scent with a hint of rose. It's my favourite sleepy-time scent but I wear it anytime I need to feel comforted. Can't say enough good things, love love it!

    Grog

I got this is an frimp (thankee ) and straight off the bat wasn't too sure about it... I'm definitely not usually into boozy scents, or anything very sweet and buttery but I decided to try it out anyway just to see In the imp: Smells like straight up Baileys Irish Cream. Very, very sweet, butterscotch and booze. It also smells very creamy, like melted vanilla ice cream. Yummy but also a little sickening! Wet: Yep, same as in imp. Maybe a tiny bit more fruity, the way brown sugar smells fruity... Dry: Less creamy now, it smells more like rum then Baileys. Also the brown sugar has become burnt brown sugar and it's very overpowering! Well, this perfume smells like dark rum and burning sugar. It does remind me of something pirates would drink, but it's not really something I want to smell like!

    Verdandi

In the imp: Smells almost like rockmelon to me which seems really weird! It's very sweet, fruity and lolly-ish... Not sure about this one.. Wet: The lolly aspect seems to be calming down a lot thankfully! It's starting to smell a bit more complex. A bit like apple herbal tea actually. Dry: Mmmm I like this one a lot! Definitely not lollies anymore, phew. Now it's been on for a while all I smell is sweet, slightly fruity, soft amber. I was worried the amber might go soapy on me but it hasn't yay. I can't smell the herbs all that much (probably just my inexperienced nose!) but I like the amber so much I don't miss them. This perfume makes me think of sitting in the sun, eating a ripe red apple and drinking a cup of sweet herbal tea. It's very cosy and comforting
