BPAL

  • BPAL of the Day
    Spooky
  • Favorite Scents
Sugar Skull 2004, Gingerbread Poppet 2003, Midwinter's Eve 2004, Miskatonic University, Spooky, Lady Macbeth (especially the original formulation), Skadi, Three Witches (original), Creepy, and others. Favorite notes: almond, berry, blackberry, black pepper, blood orange, caramel, cinnamon, clementine, coconut, coffee, cream, grapefruit, hazelnut, lemon, lime, orange, pear, pineapple, sugar, vanilla, white pepper, wine, pine, some mints, most citrus. Mostly like spicy and/or sweet and/or foody and/or fruity scents I guess. Plus pines and citrus. I have tons of the Yule and Halloween scents and most sound good to me, even if some of them don't work for me. Not wild about most incense-y ones and really don't like most florals. Sweet or light and bright are my thing, I think. I'm not sure musk agrees with me and I'm still (after all these years) trying to isolate the notes that don't work. I mostly just buy straight from the lab and mostly buy LE bottles. Interested in trying stuff from the inquisitions, DD, and other places where I haven't purchased things.

    Dana O'Shee

I agree with the many people who found that it smelled very almondy in the vial and when wet, then mellowed a bit and developed a bit as it dried into almond-milk-something else. Lovely. Sadly, I also agree with those who found it lacked staying power and that it's very light. I love it, though, and sometimes I do want a light scent so I may yet order a big bottle of it.

    Lampades

Wet: It smells gorgeous, I love the cranberry. But upon drydown: I mostly smell musk with a hint of floral and cranberry. Sigh. Seems like maybe anything with musk in it, the musk takes over. Argh. Will try this again a time or two, because it smells so lovely at first and in the bottle.

    Blood Kiss

I thought I'd love this, given the reviews here and the description. And my love of vanilla, berries, wine; all things sweet and/or berry. But all I smell is what I guess must be vetiver and/or musk. Ugh. I think I may have had this same problem with King of Spades and with some of the Lunacy blends (and maybe Samhain and Lampades-- which I loved at first, but then got incensy/musky). Frustrating. Still trying to pinpoint the problem notes, so I can avoid them.

    Gingerbread Poppet

I'm relieved to see a couple of comments about how the 2004 Gingerbread Poppet compares to the 2003 version. I have no way to compare them side by side, but just felt that either I didn't like the 2004 version as much or I was misremembering 2003 somehow (or my tastes had changed). I had a 5ml of the 2003 Gingerbread Poppet and it was love at first sniff. So rich and gingerbread-y; sweet and spicy and . . . perfect. Like bottled gingerbread. I wore the scent a couple of times and then tragedy struck-- I dropped my 5ml bottle on the floor (hard bathroom tile). This was a different kind of bottle than we get now and the lid pretty much broke in a bunch of pieces and part of the bottle broke and most of the oil ended up on the floor and I couldn't salvage much. So I begged for more on the forum, to no avail. And pestered the Lab folks. Was thrilled that Gingerbread Poppet was on the list of Yule LEs this year. Because though I've since tried many BPAl scents, none ever compared to The Poppet. I ordered two bottles and when they arrived I was so excited and then . . . disappointed. Not as wonderful as I remembered. Still great, but just not as rich somehow. Unless my allegiance was just moving to Sugar Skull. Add to that the heartbreak of Egg Nog (in the bottle, it smells floral to me; my boyfriend says it smells "medicinal" to him; neither thing is remotely Noggy, to the point I worry there was a mix-up at the Lab). Fortunately I like Sugar Cookie a lot (the other Yule LE I ordered). Maybe I'll try layering Poppet 2004 with some sweet scents and see if that does the trick. Or I'll just hope that there'll be Poppet 2005 and it'll be more like 2003. (Dang that tile floor).

    King of Spades

This sounded so wonderful, but just didn't work for me at all. Reading the reviews here made me wish I could smell the wonderful stuff y'all smell, but more and more I think it must be musk and/or vetiver that really do not agree with me. Seems unfair that they can ruin something with so many other scents I love as a part of it! At least I have a swap arranged to someone who can better appreciate the King.

    Egg Nog

Weird. I was so looking forward to Egg Nog and given how much I love Sugar Cookie, Gingerbread Poppet, other foodie scents from BPAL, I expected it'd be dead on. Instead both in the bottle and on my skin it smells extremely floral. Is it possible a bottle ever gets labeled wrong or they put together a bad batch or something? I'm puzzled! (And disappointed).
