Once, I dreamt I was a sphinx. Regal and wise and brimming with the Secrets of the Gods; the Words of Power were mine. I guarded the labyrinth. I paced there: between the gates, rippling my flanks, both languid and poised in my repose, the vision of contentment within my sleek fur. My gaze could pierce steel and heart alike, my roar the very tumbling of the Earth, my purr the very trembling of the Stars. Vagabonds, Heroes and Gods were put to the test before me and had to earn their passage by me. There I was: ultimate, the envy of Kings and Emperors, possessed of all answers and all questions, and most of all, lonely.
