    Manhattan

BPAL, why oh why tease me with these scents... It smells fabulous and bottle-worthy when first applied, but quickly morphs into a super-duper hotel soap mess! not cheapo hotel soap, but still, where did all that luxury disappear to?? ..then it just fades away to nothing...

    Vice

Yet another disappointment...I wanted to try this because the notes reminded me of Blood Kiss, which works well for me.... However, the chocolate and orange blossom are fighting each other, and the cherry is leaving a decidedly artificial note on my skin... after a short while it turns to a plastiky orange blossom cherry smell that reminds me shockingly of the plastic artificial flowers my grandma had in her bathroom when I was a little kid! Oh BPAL, how fickle your scents are.

    Cheshire Cat

First Grapefruit and lavender, camomile...then red currant and grapefruit...the dry down ends up being very faint, slightly medicinal, slightly sweet...just not for me.

    The Caterpillar

Oy vey - how can something that sounds so wonderful be a simply stifling, stale old lady perfume smell? I get nothing but a scent similar to a bottle of very old avon perfume my Grandma might have kept on her dresser.

    Independent

received as a frimp from the Lab - Okay, this is totally cola! That's pretty American if you ask me - it morphs to a very lemony cola...this would be a nice air freshner or soap! I wont be wearing it as a perfume. It makes me thristy!!

    Karmê (Κάρμη)

Received as a frimp from the Lab... I wanted to love this...I wish somehow that my skin would act like everyone elses!! When I put this on it was immediately a floral...it stayed a floral, and dried down to a white crisp floral that amped and I ended up having to wash it off....damn, another one bites the dust.

    Nine Mysteries

Received as a frimp from the Lab... all I can say is EEEek and iick.. I dont get anything soft, gentle or pleasant. On my skin it smells exactly like the wintergreen toilet bowl cleaner I used to use. Has a background that wants to come through - upon dry-down its a soapy, coconuty, incense - too sweet - and the 1st 15 minutes made me hate it.

    Sprinklecake

Sweet and a little almondy boozy, but I believe thats due to putting too much on! I get buttercream frosting and cake! delicious! Not a scent I would wear, but would love it in a room spray or candle.

    Samhain

Hey, Im 1st for 2011 version The scent was very similar to 2010, but with more pepper. The BIGGEST issue I have with Samhain is that it takes toooo damn long to change into the scent I love! I have to suffer for 2-3 hours of dry leaves and no spices...It's still nice, and Im keeping the imp. A very unique scent, and makes me think of calaveras from last year again.
  10. grnwoodtree

    Samhainophobia

An interesting version of Samhain, for me. I enjoyed it through the dry down, but then it became closer to a men's scent - Im keeping the imp, because its not unpleasant - would love a candle that smells like this.

    Autumn Cider

Okay, so my DH and I recently went to an Autumn harvest festival - there we found someone making old fashioned fresh pressed Apple cider = the flavor is incomparable to ANYTHING store bought. We drank a whole half gallon right there on the spot. This scent reminds of that perfectly - as perfectly as it can get being a perfume! What Im assuming other's saw as sour, is the fresh zingy quality of a freshly pressed apple - pretty amazing actually that it was captured so well. And kind of sad that so many people don't get to drink freshly pressed cider. The spices were almost non-existent on me, which is fine - the only problem is it fades soon (not as quickly as Little Bird), but bottle worthy - and reminds me of Lambswool too! Enjoy!

    Donna con Ventaglio

Received an empty bottle from a forumite - and the scent continuously wafts from the bottle to me! This is one of the VERY FEW BPAL floral perfumes that I can wear, and that smells so deeply mature and satisying, that I must find a partial bottle. The scent is as other's have stated, grand, regal, classic, and expensive. Blended SO well that note one of the typical amping notes comes out to kill it for me. Im SO so happy I found this one! I had about given up on finding ANY BPAL florals that would work at all. Its nice to be astonished.

    The Unsteady Governess

Pure violet - as in the old fashioned violet perfumes and the old tins of violet candies that my grandma might have had. Violet is sweet and slightly sugary, but the tea keeps it from getting out of hand - the tea is a great balancer. I know I will only be able to wear this in very very tiny amounts because these notes both want to amp and carry my head into painville. So next time, a dab will do me! All in all an elegant, feminine scent, victorian, and clean. I have nothing like it so far, and Im glad to be able to wear something not so masculine!

    The Byronic Antihero

Need I say that i was thrilled beyond belief to see a Byron scent, especially after I suggested a fragrance like this! I'm in again! Although I said that Saturnalia reminded me of Byron's velvet coat, this IS SOOO much closer to how I see the dark-haired brute lover. The fougere definitely stands out, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the vetiver and patchouli balanced the flora, and my first impression was of an utterly old fashioned Victorian scent, a bit licentious, with some steamy sex in the boudoir. After about 30 minutes this mellowed in a similar fashion as Hunter (altho completely different scents!). It is truly unisex, lovely, sexy, old fashioned, yet too rich and fulfilling to wear without intent. Another wonderful vetiver!! Thank you, oh fabulous perfumer, for giving me such a wonderful Byron scent!

Some pagan oriented stationary would be nice, but NO pentacles please! -- do like post-its and good writing pens are nice. I'd either be Sara Pezzini as portrayed by Yancy Butler in the Witchblade TV series (1st season, not 2nd), or one of the medieval Queens. If you could go back to any point in time, where, when, why? I'd head straight to pre-christian ancient Ireland and Scotland - and then over to Greece. I was born WAYYYY too late!!! I would survive quite well without 'modern' society, when barter and trade were the ways of the land, and few people populated the Earth, so the mass-destruction of our environment hadn't happened yet.... Favorite scary book or story: I recall a collection by Ursula K LeGuin being scary but Ive never been able to find it since I was a kid! Favorite scary movie: I love good scary sci fi cause it couldn't be real; I can handle any of the Hannibal Lector movies because people are sick puppies in real life. Would you be interested in an astrology birth chart? I'm the astrologer who makes the charts ;-) What animal would your daemon be? Alternately, your patronus. A Fox or a Phoenix Nail Polish: just my toes - unless I come across a miracle formula to keep my fingernails from being damaged after painting them. Love unique colors - My current bottles are an aqua, metallic pumpkin, opalescent ruby red, and one called 'Solar' by Revlon that is SOOO old but I love Stuffed critters - sure. Animals in particular. foxies, wolves, turtles, rodents, bears, even blue jays or coyotes for my hubby. Jane Austen - have not read any - but LOVE the movies - own several of the BBC versions. Grand Guignol

Let me start by saying I love apricots - I grew up with a fruit orchard -nothing like a fresh, juicy, sun-ripened apricot. This is total fake apricot, which is why I cant deal with it - might be a pleasant fruit smell for those who like dark boozy fruit scents - but for me its a lot like one of the fake smells you find in crappy bath and body products found in big box stores.

    Arcana

Okay - Im totally confused. Wet and dry on my skin this is first and foremost a clump of moist, semi-rotten mushrooms, and after that frankincense and verbena. It does not change...and although I LOVE the forest and the smells of decomposing forest floor, I dont see it as a wearable fragrance - not even in ritual :-P

Received this as a decant - so no idea what bottle # Anyway, All I can think of is what gummy cola bottles taste like - its got that definite citrus in there, along with the spices of a cola scent. Not unpleasant, but way too sweet & DEFINITELY not for me. Washed off - and soon to swap away!

    Panther Moon

Loved the initial dirt note - the incense was alright too - but the musk turned it into something entirely TOO sweet for my chemistry. Its too bad, because I enjoyed the subtle spiciness of it.

Hmmm - this is the leather scent I've been looking for. As close as it comes to a 'feminine' leather. The sage and leather work together for me perfectly, and create something I consider a signature fragrance - I just tried it on today and am wanting a bottle immediately. It exudes a leathery strength without being overpowering like Red Rider or Traveler. This is kind of what I wanted Coyote to be, but Coyote turned to a floral mess. I've been continuously sniffing my wrist all day, and never tire of it - it also reminds me of the fresh outdoors when Im camping, it has the freshness to it, I smell skin-warmed leather, the sage grass, and a touch of the wild.

Scent Recs based on your PERSONALITY!

What a kick-ass thread! Ok, 1st my recommendations for others - and Im not scent aficionado! So if it seems weird, it may be!: khazakantI believe I want to send you two scents that you would love: Bluebeard and Blood Kiss, complex, wit some masculine flair, but definitely unisex in my book. I'd also suggest seeing what you think of Sara Pezzini (witchblade) another complex, gritty sweet scent. Check out The Traveler too - a unique, rustic leather. Maybe Mary Read. Meirion I dont know why, but Anne Bonny and Robin Goodfellow seem like something you need to try. Also the Lion and Elegba. Bonny Have you tried Little Bird? - its light and sweet, and quiet megheartsshoes you need something full-bodied, spicy and rich! I suggest Clemence, Tintagel, Blood Kiss, and Sed non Satiata occursboozey notes or a scent as strong as you that will be subtle cause you dont want something representing you - try Banned in Boston, oblivion, Jazz Funeral, Port au Prince Okay - so about me: lots about me is a paradox -its not easy figuring out what I should write! So I'll list my paradoxes first: - Im a Reiki energy healer working for the highest good of humanity who is also an anarchist and believes in EarthFirst! and other radical groups who value earth first. - I have nonstop endless ideas, plans and imagination to create whatever I want, but am now too sick to do so. - I love soft mother of pearl opalescent colors as well as Dark, blood red, and the greens of a deep forest. - Im equally at home living as a filthy hippie at a Rainbow gathering, not bathing for week as I am wearing precious jewels, fine silk velvet, and dining at a 5 star eatery. - I hate violence but love swords and chivalry My heros are my husband, Gandhi, Sara Pezzini in WItchblade (played by Yancy Butler), Joan of ARc, Nelson Mandela, and myself. Love animals and the wild places more than humanity - yet I get lonely far too easily. I hope that if I get senile when Im old I'll fall into my private Tolkien world in Middle Earth, and sail away to the Gray Havens. My favorite styles are renaissance, total hippie, Scottish island, 1940's, and aristocrat Background in theatre & acting, a degree in Natural Resources I have 2 ultimate dreams currently: my husband and I have 2 kids, and then find our dream old farm home in a Vermont or western Oregon valley, complete with alpacas, goats, ducks and chickens - where we build me a beautiful floor-to-ceiling windowed weaving studio. The other one is to travel to Italy, Greece, Siberia, and Scotland, and not come back. Aries sun, Capricorn Moon, Venus/Merc in Pisces, Sag rising, Virgo pluto/midheaven Whew - what the hell did I just write?? Anybody? This whole BPAL thing has been confusing as heck for me.

    Falling Leaf Moon

The first autumn rains dripping onto fallen leaves against a backdrop of opoponax, labdanum, patchouli, agarwood, and oakmoss. This is for me one of the finest scents I have tried. Its immediately fallen leaves, the dry crumbly ones, you can smell the tannins, but its also sweet, woody, and has a touch of tobacco, incense and smoke in it. The blend is serene and perfect - usually tobacco scents become ridiculous on me - but this is gentle, sweet, soothing, caressing, and I dont want to stop smelling my arm!!!

    Candles Moon

Okay - this is lovely, but strange! On first applying it, the milky scent comes out, but a lot of sourness too that seems very lemony! On dry-down, its a sour fruity scent, must be the berries, and a light greenish, cooling floral in the background. What is strange is the scent I get whiffs of is completely different from the scent when I stick my nose to it!
