I'm experiencing some cognitive dissonance here at the dog show. It turns out that Shelties are _tiny_.

Just finished waiting a stereotypically long time to renew my driver's license, assisted by non-stereotypically helpful and friendly staff. Now, do I go back to work, or take myself to lunch?

Thank you all for the lovely birthday wishes. You really know how to make a girl feel appreciated! I'm starting my new year by working. :-( But I will be playing tomorrow!

Holy cats! How is it possible that I married the love of my life _17_ years ago today? Time flies, indeed.

I have never seen the roads so very empty on my morning commute as today. It's possible that I am the only person in Salem working on Christmas Eve. ;-)

Excellent winter afternoon at the Saturday Market. All purchases were for pets. Not sure what that says about my holiday shopping list. ;-)

This is one of those days where having a smartphone isn't so great. I could have happily remained ignorant of the shooting spree at a Connecticut grade school for a few more hours.

There was a shooting at Clackamas Town Center (a mall here in the Portland area) this afternoon; the mall is still closed and being searched by police. Spencer and I are safe, as is the rest of my local family.

I apparently owe an apology to my chilly friends like Carmen Hughes Corbin and Kathy Paxton-Williams. The floor we just put down had to be acclimated to "room temperature" of between 65 and 85 degrees for three days before being installed. To make certain we were doing it right, we got an indoor thermometer. Turns out that Spencer and I routinely keep our house at around 57 degrees. Huh.

Coming Saturday - an exciting scavenger hunt wherein Nicole and Spencer attempt to retrieve every kitchen item they own from wherever it was hurriedly stashed on floor day. Is the toaster in the dishwasher? Is the fruit bowl under the stove? It's a mystery!

...just received a stern talking to from her physical therapist re: the wisdom of carrying several hundred pounds of flooring 2 weeks after being in a moving vehicle crash.

Over the river and through the woods to "Pop Pop and Grandma Debra's" house we go. Alas, everyone else in the state is on this road. We have seen the remnants of some bad accidents. :-(

Merlin's blood work came back :drumroll: COMPLETELY NORMAL! No sign of permanent damage. We are so, so, so relieved.
-
Just took Merlin to the vet for follow up blood testing to assess liver function. Fingers crossed.

You know that adage about always wearing nice underwear in case you have to go to the hospital? The pet equivalent is making sure your dog is nicely brushed out. Otherwise, once the crisis and panic have passed, you sit in the hospital visiting room and realize that your Sheltie's rump and haunches are in shaggy disarray and look like a bad toupee. Or, as Spencer calls it, "Trump butt".

Merlin update: All vital signs are strong and stable. Blood sugar remains normal. Hospital staff is charmed by his sweetness. We won't know about liver function - the big worry - until about 8:00 p.m.Nick update: I feel like I've been hit by a car. A Mazda 6, to be precise. I'm waiting to see my doc right now. I suspect I'm only dealing with minor bruises and strains, but better safe than sorry. CRV update: :-(

Election Day was not good for me - other than most of the results, that is. I was rear-ended by a distracted driver on my way home from work. Her car was totaled; mine was just damaged. We both got off with minor injuries. By the time I finally made it to Portland, I wound up diverting to Dove Lewis to meet Spencer. Merlin managed to steal a pack of sugarless gum off the counter and poison himself. He is in the ICU right now.

Left, Right - I think we can all come together as Americans to agree that Donald Trump is an asshat of truly astounding proportions.

My favorite highly partisan quote of the day (so far): Vote Democratic. We're not perfect, but they're crazy.
