Wulric, the Wolfman (2006)

Recommended Posts

Friendly, charming, and cuddly, but possessing one hell of a mean streak: cocoa absolute, French vanilla, birch tar, lavender, bourbon vetiver, wild musk, clary sage, and cistus.

when i firstfirstfirst sniffed this, i remember thinking "earth and chocolate" which i guess kinda makes sense? as it settles in, the French Vanilla and Lavender blend in a very TKO sort of way, and the cocoa and the musk give it a nice balance. thankfully i don't get any vetiver and any sage that i'm smelling doesn't go off in a Thanksgiving-stuffing sort of vibe.

overall an interesting image but not something i want to smell like.

Is IT cuddly!

This is SUCH a comfort scent. I get a hint of musk overlayed with cocoa, and I get a whiff of light tobacco and that vanilla rolled together.

This is the first CD of many that's a real hit with my skin. It's such a soft warm scent without being "hot" (like, cinnamon is a warm scent, but it's a "hot" scent...know what I mean?) -- this makes me want to just cuddle up in a blanket and snooze and be cozy.

I think I'm in love and it makes me kind of nervous [for my wallet] to say so... :wub2:

I wanted to love this so much. It smelled divine in the imp and when I first put it on. As it dried though it began to fade away very quickly and just left a vague cologne-ish scent.

On first sniff, this is lavender and cocoa (duh), quite strong, but I like it. Soon, he softens up ever so slightly to a wonderful creamy vanilla cocoa/lavender. I absolutely LOVE this, it is soft, feminine and cuddly. The lavender tempers the sweetness of the vanilla and cocoa, and there is NO sharp lavender at all. This is kind of like TKO, but better IMO. I am getting quite relaxed and calm, just sitting here with wafts of wonderful Wulric around me. This would be an awesome bedtime scent, as well as for PMS with the chocolate. Definitely moving to my top ten and pretty much one my favourites from the Carnival. Hoard worthy like my beloved Mme. :wub2:

Oooooo, what a dangerous bad-boy, and I've got a new crush! ;)

Wulric is dark cocoa -- not chocolate to my nose, but cocoa backed up by so much more! A bit of the sage and lavendar, that birch tar note late in the drydown, plenty of vanilla and something that might even be bourbon. Strong and sexy!

I don't see this as masculine at all, but I go for the darker scents, so YMMV. Lots of throw, decent lasting power.

I was a little skeptical when reading the notes and reviews, being a little scared off by a few components- but dayum... this, I think, is the first scent I've tried and immediately knew I needed a bottle (I'm stingy and picky, lol). I'm horrible at picking out notes, so I'm not even going to try to be all fancy.

When I first put it on my skin, it's a bit pungent- the cocoa is what first hits me with a kinda-medicinal lavender KA-POWing behind. But after it dries for a few little while, it melts into this deep, slightly spicy 'n sweet, musky, faintly herbal cocoa vanille. With not knowing what vetiver smells like, nor particularly liking lavender, this one is a surprise hit and made my otherwise crapola day much better. It's one of those scents where a dab definitely will do ya, and it seems I need to apply it a bit ahead of time before going out so it has time to settle and lose the ferocious bite of the lavender.

BPAL cocoa scents make me smile, even when it's really hard to. <img src="http://www.bpal.org/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="icon_biggrin.gif" />

ETA: Edited to add that after testing a a li'l Comptoir Sud Pacifique's 'Amour de Cacao', I immediately went, "Hey, I know you.. Wulric, my love!" It's a very, very TAME Wulric, but that was my immediate response upon first sniff. So, if you like the CSP one, you will prolly like Wulric after it has settled down a bit.

Wulric is my new scent boyfriend.

I originally got a decant of this with the sneaky intent of conniving my actual boyfriend into wearing it for me. While it smells great on him (really! great!), it smells magnificent on me as well. My skin chemistry turns this into a chocolatey vanilla musk with the edge of lavendar that keeps it from being too foody (I prefer not to veer too far into "gourmand" territory).

I wear this when I want to be a little mysterious but mostly cozy and comforted. The vetiver isn't obvious on me - just a backround thought, like the occasional recollection that a wolfman is actually pretty f'ing dangerous, even if he makes an excellent snuggler. Don't piss him off.

This is the first Carnaval Diabolique scent that is truly bottle-worthy for me (granted I've only tried 8 of them hah)!

What really made me want to try this scent was the story/description. It sounded sinister and lovely? I find something oddly appealing, gruesome, and whimsical about a wolfman playing a blood soaked piano.

In the decant this smelled rather nutty and a little tart/bitter; go cocoa, vetiver and sage! I can still detect hints of french vanilla creaminess and lavender sweetness. Mmmm. Tasty. A bit too nutty for me right now, but cocoa usually does that: smells nutty in the imp/decant/bottle and like cocoa on my skin. Friendly and cuddly with a mean streak. yes. yes. YES.

On my wrists the scent morphs in about five minutes or so. The cocoa starts smelling like cocoa and NOT a nut! The vanilla and lavender emerge more strongly making everything creamy and blend together. The vetiver adds an interesting deep dirt scent that surprisingly just melts in PERFECTLY. Ahh I'm starting to smell some musk now (just a touch)! No longer really tart or bitter, but it isn't overly creamy or heavy (Tiresias was overly sweet and too heavy for me because of the caramel and patchouli, Wulric seems to be juuuust right).

Dry its melted into the wonderful scent of deep warm fur and a sinister deep smile, chuckle, large teeth. This embodies the Wolfman perfectly. Delicious, seductive, gruesome. Beth you've done it again :wub2:

EDIT: for booboos.

If a werewolf smelled this frikkin good, I would let him take an appendage.. maybe two.

In bottle: smells strongly of vetivert and cocoa. I see others had this same impression. Not really sure why the vetivert appears to take such a front seat only in bottle? Anyways, intriguing. I could tell I was in love on first sniff.

Wet: all the sweetness of the cocoa and vanilla combine forces and explode in the warm up. The birch tar is SUCH an awesome addition and comes out pretty strong on me. The tempered lavender is a perfect top note. Surprisingly enough, I can pull a definable clary sage note (one of my favorites).

Drydown: Softens into cocoa loveliness. There is a familiarity of some men's soft cologne but I think it's just the vetivert melding with musk and a sweet note (typical men's balance).

This scent makes me realize that no matter how smell obsessed my life has always been, how distinguished my nose may be, or how much I dream of doing a job like Beth's that I'm severely under-talented for it.. *bow's down* Best gender neutral scent I've ever smelled. I may need to hide the bottle from my sweetheart!!

Oh Wulric, I want to jump your bones!

:kiss2:

Truly, this is the sexiest scent I've ever had the joy to experience.

Shake it up! Yes, it's crucial to shake this oil up before applying it. I didn't the first time and wondered why there was no cocoa absolut, then realized it was all on the bottom of the bottle. But assuming you mixed it well...

What a heavenly, complex scent!

:love!:

Somehow all the notes manage to coexist without any of them either amping or disappearing, as usually happens with me. If I sniff carefully, I can pick out the individual notes, but they blend seamlessly into an amazing, round, glowing aura of warmth. I can't describe it adequately. Just get some and try it yourself!

Bottle: Chocolate, lavender and an astringent edge that I think is coming from the sage and birch tar. This one settles easily and requires a lot of agitation to blend up properly.

Wet: Cocoa overload! Cocoa and birch and lavender. This is a totally bizarre scent.

Dry: Earthy, dark cocoa with a touch of astringency and a nice lavender/vanilla combo. This is a bizarre scent but it's so... right, cuddly. The sort of scent you wear on cozy weekends and turn off your phone and just relax and enjoy life. It's lovely and warm and a little languid and lazy. The birch and sage cut the sweetness and the vetiver lends the cocoa an intensely dark edge.

Throw: Good.

Overall: Wulric is lovely and I'm glad to have the bottle. I have concerns re: aging since I rarely get to have the lazy sort of weekends this scent requires. But it's a very beautiful, interesting scent and definitely the sort of perfume you're not going to find at your local department store.

in the bottle: herbal chocolate. a little strange, but sweet and sexy.

wet on skin: VERY strong herbals. just a touch of cocoa hiding underneath those herbals.

dry on skin: very soft chocolate with a touch of herbals. Oh my, this dries down beautifully! Very sexy! :wub2:

Bottle acquired: October 2008

Wulric is all cocoa and vetiver at first sniff, but as the drydown goes on he gives off faint bits of lavender (which I normally amp like whoa, though not here). Wulric dries into this amazing tumbled sex in the sheets with a side of cocoa scent. Oh, wow. Once Wulric has shaken himself dry, he reverts to a musky lavender with no traces of cocoa and hints at the naughtiness of the drydown. Would that he smelled like that the whole time...

Wulric is currently a bed-buddy of mine. I fell in love at first swab from the imp, and got my bottle in yesterday, so we had some cuddle time last night. The pitch card is hilarious-- mean streak indeed-- but my Wulric seems quite happy to play nice and snuggle. I get a milk chocolate with a slightly "off" note, which works somehow, plus a hint of lavender and other herbs. One of my favorite things about this particular blend is how it wafts around me as I move: it has good throw it would seem. Sadly, it doesn't last as long as I'd like, but this one is definitely a keeper. Let's hope he never turns on me!

First sniff: Citrus and lavender and… cocoa? It’s like men’s cologne rolled in melted chocolate. Nice, but weird!

Wearing: Really flippin’ gorgeous. The cocoa is wonderfully warm and rich, and the men’s-cologne part adds a lighter note without being too strange. That cologney scent fades away very quickly, leaving warm gorgeous cocoa-vanilla hanging on for hours. Excellent.

I love werewolves, vanilla, cocoa, betiver, bourbon, musk, sage and birch, and after months of putting off Wulric and hearing so many flattering reviews, I knew I just had to try him out and got a bottle when the opportunity presented itself :)

In the bottle - cocoa and vetiver. Mmmh, seductive :D

On wet - Whoa! Vetiver, delightful cocoa, birch tar, faraway sage. Why the deuce did I not try this oil sooner. Foolish, foolish man. Gahh. So good.

Drydown - Okay, self? The next time you have a really amazing feeling about an oil and the only thing keeping you from trying that sucker is your own self-doubt, sucker-punch that self-doubt and buy the damn bottle. This oil is utterly, utterly amazing. I love it. I adore it. I want to move in with it. Vetiver, vanilla, musk, sage, with slight hints of musk and a consistent but not overbearing streak of cocoa. The citrus, that so often ruins a blend for me, is nonexistant.

A new favourite. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

In the bottle - Oh YUM. Cocoa and vanilla with some bourbon give it the foody, but there is musk and vetiver in the background which is glorious. And the lavender is just there enough to dance with this. It is incredible.

Wet - Just a touch of birch.

Drying - The cocoa is backing off (common with my skin) and the birch is coming out far more. Well, okay, not -far- more, but it is more noticible. It is giving this scent an interesting twinge that I find surprisingly nice. The vanilla is almost gone, oddly. But... oh darn, there comes the sage out in full force, making this rather too herby. Arg.

Dry (4 hours) - The sage came and left, thank goodness, leaving that wonderful cocoa/birch scent, with a hint of musk and lavender. It is much fainter now, but it is delightfully NOT foody, which I really like.

Overall - If I weren't too lazy to shake it before every use, I'd keep this one. But I am, so I'm not.

Warm and fluffy and safe, like it's a chilly morning and I'd just woke up and buried my face into Wulric's fur (and he likes me enough to tolerate me there/not tear my eyes out). Cocoa and woodsy and delicious, until, what's this? It goes sour D:

Yes, the sun has risen and Wulric is sweating, and his BO is starting to peep through the warm comfort of his fur. Ilu warm cocoa smell! Don't leave me!

In the bottle, this smells of a herby lavender with a slight hint of chocolate in the background. On my skin the clary sage makes its appearance, softening the lavender, with trickles of vanilla and tar and vetiver wending their way through the scent. After a few hours, this is a more subtle yet somewhat smoky vanilla musk with a reasonable throw.

This scent is certainly a smooth morpher!

Well, I really like this. It clearly separates really easily in the decant, so I'm gonna have to keep an eye on that.

I get the cocoa and lavender at first (and it's a really wonderful lavender), and then gradually the sage. The vanilla chimes in, but not enough to bug me. As it settles, I can't pick out the cocoa much anymore, but there's a really pleasant brown earthy bite at the end of it, which I assume is the vetiver.

There is something that smells kind of pleasantly leathery in this one, as well, but that might just be because leather is my favorite complementary note to sage and lavender, and I'm just filling in the blanks.

My only problem is that it reminds me a little too much of my bottle of Bow & Crown of Conquest (the vanilla/sage/lavender/musk combo), but with a browner, more masculine edge and slightly more prominent lavender.

Wulric, the Wolfman

In the Bottle:

heavy cocoa & something bitter & sour underneath.

On my Skin, Wet:

Blegh!!!

The vetiver & cocoa are not playing nice, and it's smelling like rotten chocolate cake :(

On my Skin, Dry:

still pretty potent vetiver, dry cocoa, and something vaguely citrus-y...like preserved orange zest or something.

Verdict:

not my thing - it probably won't get worn very often, and probably never be used in a scent locket.

OMG, this scent. I've had this half decant lying around forever and I've ever sniffed it in the vial without testing, though "Oh, that's kind of nice," and put it away again. But something made me skin test it today and... wow.

Chocolate almost never works for me. It turns to plastic or waxy Tootsie Rolls. The only cocoa scent I've really ever liked is Gelt, and I can occasionally like Velvet. But otherwise, they're blegh. Wulric, however, is delicious. :wub2:

The chocoalate does not get weird, it stays true to a dry, bittersweet cocoa, earthy and warm without being too foody. The vanilla is not very apparent, actually, but the other supporting notes are. I am confounded by how good lavender is with cocoa-- they don't seem to go together at all, but the herbal blue astringency of the lavender actually compliments the chocolate perfectly. The clary sage is working the same way. I get just a little bit of vetiver/musk/citus but it provides a nice resinous smoky backdrop for the soft floral chocolate thing going on in the foreground. I love this!

In the decant: wow, the separation here is...well, interesting. Well, cocoa absolute can do that :P after warming it up and rolling it around to have the oils mix, I'm getting chocolate and herbs. It's a little confusing to my nose. Chocolate, lavender, sage. Not exactly a "good" combination.

Wet on skin: whoa, this was quite tingly on the skin. Mostly chocolate, and the herbs have receded, but still around to give a bit of character to the chocolate. The vanilla is coming out. Quite creamy, lovely.

Dry: chocolate, soft lavender, and vanilla. Not nommy, which is good--there is an herbal, almost floral tinge to this which keeps it from going foody with the chocolate and vanilla. The vanilla is to die for, that same lovely vanilla in Antique Lace. Creamy chocolate and french vanilla, with gentle herbs and florals.

Verdict: gosh, every time I sniff this, I am blown away. It's a non-foody chocolate, and a very lovely vanilla, smooth and creamy and absolutely fabulous. Definite must-keep!

I'm not a fan of lavender, and vetiver can go either way, so I put off trying Wulfric for a long time. Now I'm kicking myself. Wulfric is a fluffy, cozy, cuddly blanket of a fragrance--chocolate and lavender, backed by vanilla and clary sage. It reminds me of Sachs/TKO, but with a chocolate base instead of just vanilla. Amazing, amazing, AMAZING.

Website Description: Friendly, charming, and cuddly, but possessing one hell of a mean streak: cocoa absolute, French vanilla, birch tar, lavender, bourbon vetiver, wild musk, clary sage, and cistus.

In the bottle: Lavender, sage, a smidge of the birch.

Immediately after application: This went on like a lion and is warming already like a lamb. It was in-your-face lavender-sage-birch with a hint of vanilla but calmed pretty quickly into a lovely vanilla, cocoa, and herb scent. I definitely want to keep this werewolf around!

Warming up: Wow this is yummy! Vanilla, cocoa, with herbs and a touch of musk and vetiver.

Fading: Musky vanilla and herbs.

Faded: Average throw, average wear.

Overall: I LOVE THIS SO HARD! It was war at first with all the notes and settled into the most wonderful, furry scent. MY WEREWOLF!

Rating: 5/5.
