Lot and His Daughters

Recommended Posts

Indonesian black patchouli, petitgrain, brandewijn, incense, saffron, lemon peel, myrrh, skin musk, bourbon geranium, and tangerine.

imp: myrrh and tangerine and patchouli and... other notes i can't quite pin down.

wet: very lemony as soon as it's applied but it softens almost instantly. the patchouli is absent too, i'm getting a sweet myrrh incense feel.

dry: the myrrh has faded and there is a sharp citrus incensy scent that lingers. just a little too sharp for my tastes though.

Wet, this is very sharp, all lemon pith & soapy geranium. The more piercing elements of the saffron & myrrh are out in force at this point, and I very nearly regretted testing this today...

Fortunately, given an hour or so, all the pointy edges disappear & I'm left with an amazing blend of tangerine, musk & incense - deep red & glistening, juicy but in no way cloying, just beautiful. Oddly, I get no patchouli whatsoever, save a faint waft of something vaguely earthy if I'm waving my hands around a lot...

Lot & His Daughters bear a very strong resemblance to Mme Moriarty, actually, but with citrus instead of plum. Had the Mme not won my heart already, I'd be contemplating a big bottle of Clan Lot....

ETA: Whoa, this lasts for-ever! I was still getting whiffs of patchouli (it finally showed up after about 8 hours) in the shower this morning!

In the bottle it smells like men’s cologne, tangy spiciness. On the cologne fades a bit and the citrus is amped. Sharp citrus, reminds me of beach vacations when I was little. Citrus goes a little too sharp for the blend to be really balanced. I think this would smell exceptionally nice on the right person.

Spicy with citrus peel.

Geranium and patchouli.

Spices and myrrh and patchouli. The citrus and geranium have faded into the background. The wine never came forward, and my skin likes wine. So far, I like this.

The salon has been very very good to me so far.

There was something very dark and intense about this scent on application - and I think it was the black musk. And as it dries, it is sweeter and the rose geranium pops up as well as something almost violently lemon-ish. So think of this as very citrus/lemon with a base of black musk, with a whiff of rose.

It makes my head break.

As a note: my imp has been aged for over a year.

Wet on me, I was a little uncertain of this scent. There was a blast of patchouli with incense, and a very sharp smell. As it dries I notice that part of that sharp smell is lemon, which goes all lemon pledge on me :P . After about 10 minutes, the lemon has calmed down a bit, and I get a bit of sweet citrus tangerine and some red berry scent. The musk and patchouli are still pretty dark, and the throw I am getting is all earthy, gritty patchouli.

After about an hour in, this has changed even more. It reminds me a lot of Hollywood Babylon or Mania (more Mania, though) with that sweet red berry note (strawberry leaf maybe? Not sweet enough for straight strawberry) getting stronger among the dark patchouli and musk. The lemon is all gone, thank goodness.

The end result is very similar to Mania with a dirty patchouli base. I couldn't detect the complexities of this scent as much as I could with some other Salon blends, but it's probably just me. I will likely hold on to this imp in the hopes that the patchouli will calm down a little more (hmm, but it has been over a year). I like the scent otherwise, but it's not worth it to buy a bottle.

I'm testing a decant of unknown age.

At first, this is all earthy patchouli. It definitely has a darker character than plain patchouli, with no color description, and is slightly sharper. The incense takes a backseat to the patchouli, but it's there, adding a hint of smoke and darkness.

After a few minutes, the citrus comes into bloom and becomes quite strong. The tangerine adds sweetness, but the lemon peel is stronger, for me. It feels vibrant and fruity to me, rather than like a cleaning solution. For about 10 minutes, the scent is almost all sweet and tart citrus, grounded by dark patchouli. Once the citrus notes begin to evaporate, it settles into its main stage: lemon-tinged patchouli incense. If I look for the geranium I can find it, but it doesn't stand out. To my nose, it mainly provides balance to the patchouli. It doesn't smell particularly rosy, just light. I can't place the musk or saffron at all.

Although it starts out strong, it gets much lighter as it wears. Definitely worth a try if you're a fan of patchouli and citrus.

this is much lighter than i would have expected from the deep red-orange color and thickness of the oil.

wet, it is a nice blend of head shop, patchouli, and a little citrus. but the darker notes seem to fade with the lemon becoming slightly more prominent.

this stays close to the skin with not much throw. what i get smells a little like a fragrant dark tea with lemon and herb, in the back room of a gently scented new age bookshop. the citruses fade on me (as they tend to do) but i can still detect them an hour later, a little.

i'm just not sure on this one- i am not real big on fruits, and i like my scents strong. this is appealing, but may end up being too soft or citrus for my keeping. i'll keep the imp for now and see if it works better at a different time of month or something.

This is one of the first Salons I've tried and I'm really impressed with how complex it smells! There was a dusty incense with a dark patchouli undertone at first. As it dried I could have sworn I was smelling a slightly bitter, herbal smell alot like celery seed (could be the geranium). Now that it's been on a few hours I smell a warm, red wine scent with quite a bit of fruit to it. Wow :) I can't wait to try more of these.

I thought I was going to really enjoy this one and in the beginning I did. Something about this was very reminiscent of an artisan shop I frequent in town. It smells of spice and incense and essential oils and smooth woods and silk scarves. However, after a couple hours of wear, it turned to the dreaded Play-Doh smell on me. Gah!

Wet: Oh eurgh, fruit punch. I was not expecting that, and I don't like it at all.

Drying: Citrusy and a little soapy. I don't understand how something with so many notes I like could be reduced to not one, but two of my least favorite scents, soap and fruit punch. :( I washed this off after a little under an hour because I couldn't stand it anymore.

Huh.. 1st time I tested, the most dominant note was brandy. Second time, petitgrain.

Wet: I get a mentholated swift shot up the nostrils. I think the lemon peel tangerine and petitgrain are combining forces. Not as boozy and sweet as the first time. Something is hitting me like pine. Bourbon geranium starts to appear after a while, complicating the matters for me.

Drydown: ohhh.. I rubbed it and found the skin musk and patchouli. It seems that if tested and left, without agitation, the citrus forms a barrier. Much more even and sweet now. Still strange and there's a bitter tinge, but complex and intriguing.

I will be getting a back up of this one before the Salon goes away, wow it is incredible. There are so many levels, and changes in this one, it morphs and vacillates, no need to slather. I get the same incense note of love as The Night Raven and Pteropus Whoeverhewas, a nice soft leather, tangerine, and even I can smell them!!

It's not men's cologne for me at all, it's smart, sophisticated, beautiful, well blended, heaven. For when I don't want to smell like candy.

It could be for a lady or a man though, perfectly unisex.

I don't know why I smell leather in this, something leathery? I don't know.

The patchouli is so nice too, not obnoxious.

Imp: What a strange, fierce scent. I get a huge blast of citrus peel-- not fruit, the actual peel, sharp and bitter and delicious-- and a swirling hot spice, and a lot of green wood notes. This is almost indescribable, but it smells amazing.

Wet: Citrus peel, saffron, heavy fruity patchouli, tons and tons of incense and resin, wood and-- miracle of miracles-- a well-behaved geranium that doesn't make me ill. This is... hot citrus in the midst of an incensed desert.

Dry: Scorched citrus peels, thick heady incense and the most amazing skin musk. Holy balls. I'll be reaching for this one for sure, too bad I can't buy a bottle!

Oh God, I adore this. It does have an initial blast that is almost mentholated (I attribute that to the bourbon geranium, which once it calms down smells diviiiiine), and then almost right away it smells exactly like the New Age shop I used to frequent in my youth. The far drydown is a lovely, softly sweet and spicy skin scent. It lasts forever.

Like all the Salons, this is very complex and sophisticated. It reminds me a bit of both Third Charm and Lips Full of Lust and Laughter - it's in the same family, I would say.

Totally brilliant. I hope I can find a bottle.

ETA: This has rocketed into my Top Ten. It's long lasting and smells wonderful on me, and is also nice in the scent locket. I now own two bottles and counting...thank God for the forum sales! :wub2:

i've been wanting to try this for years! unfortunately, at first it smells like lemon peel, wine, and something a bit musty. hmm  . i think petitgrain can be a bit weird on me and wine is hit or miss. this is like a winey/citrussy/haylike scent. very odd. it doesn't seem to change much, after about 5-10 minutes, except that the wine isn't so strong. it's like musty lemon with wine in the background now. eventually, after about an hour on the skin, it's much subtler and it's just a nice soft, incense skin musk scent. i can hardly smell it though and i'm not sure it's worth the wait either...

I think WidgetAlley's review above is spot on. Lot and His Daughters does smell like "hot citrus in the midst of an incensed desert". My imp is well-aged, so I suspect the tangerine and lemon peel notes would have been stronger on release, but this smells like something savage and scorched and brightly acidic. Black patchouli, petitgrain, and bourbon geranium can all make a blend smell unsettling to me, and they work well here to that effect. The incense and skin musk make this smell intimate and close. The brandywine is a clever touch. I'm not sure if this is one I'd reach for often, but it's an amazing capture of the tone of the painting and the story behind it.

i get major red wine in the bottle- very sweet and boozy. on my skin there is a gorgeous patchouli note sweetened by wine, but something in here takes a medicinal turn and sadly i do not think this is wearable for me. :(
