These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! A raven-haired Fairy Queen of Ireland. One of her eternal duties dictates that she must hold a midnight court every season and hear the pleas of married Irishwomen. The court serves only to determine whether or not husbands are adequately serving their wife's sexual needs. A judicious yet powerfully sensual blend, a mingling of justice and sexuality: sage, sweet pea, bold pale musk and warm tonka. (Side note: I haven't tried the original, so I can't really do a comparison.) Wet: Sweet, warm musk, and hint of sage. This is very light on the skin; I had to do multiple swipes with the imp wand to get a good sniff. Dry: I don't think I would describe this as a "warm" musk anymore; it's very clean smelling. It's mostly musk, and sage on me. Sweet pea is a note I really enjoy, but I'm not getting any from this. I'm not sure where the tonka is hiding, either. (This is still incredibly light on the skin, btw.) I'll set this aside to re-test in a few weeks, but it's not really working for me right now.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! The Finnish Goddess of Agony, Torment and the joy found in inflicting pain on others. The Mistress of Torture, she has transformed in the modern era into the patron Goddess of Dominatrixes. The slap of slick, hot leather punctuates the warm, sensual embrace of black amber, red musk and dark, lascivious myrrh. The Bitch is back, and we're gonna be in trouble.... Out of all the Resurrected blends, I was most excited for Loviatar. And this most certainly does not disappoint. Loviatar 2.0 is very, very close to OG Loviatar, although of course it's tough to compare a fresh-from-the-mailbox blend with one that's been aging in a cool, dark box since...2005? But I'll try. Loviatar 2.0 gives off that same radiant warmth of amber, musk, and myrrh, wrapped up in the sexy, smoky embrace of leather. Loviatar is confident, sensual, even elegant. But that doesn't mean it's soft. This is elegance with an edge. It's the scent of that seductive, prowling strut you can achieve only when you feel completely comfortable in your own skin--and those thigh-high leather boots don't hurt, either. This is sexy with a hint of sweetness, powerful, and perfect. My only complaint is that it's not longer available in 10mL form!

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! A panoply of cultural treasures, spanning the herbs, flowers, oils and balms of the Romans, the Byzantines, the Mediterranean, the Levant, Northern China, Eastern Europe, Iran, the Bulgar-Kypchak, Mesopotamia, the Crimean Peninsula, Anatolia, Antioch, and North Africa. My initial swipe of the wand from my imp wasn't generous enough to reveal what's going on in Silk Road Resurrected. I slathered, with much better results. Silk Road is delightfully dry, spicy, & smooth. I think the sweet spiciness at the start is mainly cassia or cinnamon. No burn on me. I smell saffron, sandalwood, & tea, plus that note that I can't identify in Love's Philosophy (the one that sometimes seems like wintergreen & sometimes like root beer.) Lots going on in here--those are only the notes I felt confident about. It comes together in a well-rounded, great-smelling whole, that's not easy to tease apart. I can easily imagine this blend evoking scent memories. Medium throw, not especially long-lasting on unmoisturized skin. If I weren't already devoted to Morocco, I would need a bottle. It's not the same, but it's similar. Try it while it's available, it's good stuff.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! Amber, saffron and bergamot with mandarin, nutmeg, Bulgar rose, musk and sandalwood. Since late 2011 I've been holding onto the same imp of the original Baghdad that I bought off an eBay seller as part of a lot of imps and decants. As a newbie to BPAL at the time, it seemed like the best way to go. On that first occasion, I made the mistake of applying original Baghdad on both wrists and on my throat, giving myself a terrible headache. My husband, who has a bad sense of smell, said it was strong even from across the room. After that experience, I knew I couldn't handle more than a single dab of Baghdad on one wrist. Baghdad - Resurrected was deceptively quiet when it was wet on my skin, but I'm glad I wasn't fooled into applying more. Once it dried, I got the heavy, heady perfume that I get from the original Baghdad. I caution you against putting on your regular amount until you know how Baghdad - Resurrected affects you. Yes, this has a narcotic effect if applied too heavily. I think it must be the Bulgar rose, as that's the only note in this that I haven't smelled in something else. As this ages, I imagine it will be nearly identical to the original Baghdad. Just like the original, something in it reminds me of a perfume that my mom owned but found too strong to wear--Cinnabar, if I remember correctly. This one bottle is going to be more than enough for me, since I will only be wearing it sparingly and probably on special occasions, when I want to feel sophisticated. This is perfume fit for a pair of silky black harem pants and a simple black blouse, or a little black dress. If you're looking for an elegant perfume in BPAL form, consider Baghdad - Resurrected.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! Also called Melampode. In witchcraft legend, this is one of the components of the notorious flying ointment, and is used in rituals that summon the Devil. In Greek mythology, Melampus of Pylos used hellebore to save the daughters of the king of Argos from a Dionysian Maenad-like madness. In Christian myth, hellebore was born from the tears a little girl shed onto the snow because she had no gift to give to the Christ child. In low magick, it has been used by farmers to protect their livestock from the evil eye. Court magicians have used it in martial invisibility spells, enabling spies and assassins to infiltrate enemy camps. Hellebore resembles the wild rose, but does not belong to their family. The scent is a pale green herbal, darkly rooty, with a faint rose and peony-like overtone. Borage and hellebore fill two scenes, Sovereign plants to purge the veins Of melancholy, and cheer the heart Of those black fumes which make it smart. I did not smell the original. This starts off with a dirt-note entrance, followed almost immediately by green notes. Very soon light pure magic florals make their entrace. The rose is more a suggestion than a full-on bloom. There is another floral I cannot identify which must be the peony. I detect nuances of spice (like the spiciness of a carnation) and extremely light incense. I would have liked the earthy entrance to have stayed a while longer, but overall this is a beautiful fragrance.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! A piercing, radiant perfume: dragon's blood resin, lily of the valley, lilac and galbanum. Dragon's Eye! First! In the bottle: the dragon's blood and lily are fighting each other -- pretty much an even match so far. Wet on the skin: the lily wins! Very strong, heavy floral. The dragon's blood is down hard for the count. No sign of the other notes. Drydown: the dragon's blood opens an eye and reminds me that it is still there. The florals are surprisingly strong, considering my body's habit of ramping dragon's blood way up. Not my favorite because of the strong lily.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! As light and innocent as your first time should have been. The fresh scent of lotus hidden behind lightly scented flowers, amber, and citrus. (Side note: can't remember what the original version smells like, so I can't do a comparison.) Wet: First hit with LOTS of amber! It's a very fresh, "green" amber, as odd as that may sound. Pretty strong throw, I almost knocked myself out sniffing my wrist! Dry: Very, very similar to the wet stage. Still a fresh, "green" amber scent. There's a light floral background note, but it's not strong enough for me to figure out. Kind of reminds me of a lily, but don't take my word on that! Not getting any citrus, unfortunately. The throw has calmed down to what I would call average. I'm glad I tried this out, but I won't need to upgrade to a big bottle.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! `Crawling at your feet,' said the Gnat (Alice drew her feet back in some alarm), `you may observe a Bread-and-Butterfly. Its wings are thin slices of Bread-and-butter, its body is a crust, and its head is a lump of sugar.' `And what does IT live on?' `Weak tea with cream in it.' Bread, lightly buttered, with weak tea, cream, and a lump of white sugar. The original Bread-and-Butterfly is one of my favourites, so I was very interested to see what the resurrected version would be like. I can definitely tell which ingredient is no longer available to the lab: it's the one the gave Bread-and-Butterfly it's (divisive?) licorice-y tea note. Without it, Bread-and-Butterfly Resurrected is much gentler and milkier. When I first sniffed it, I immediately though, "That's not it," but in retrospect I realize that's unfair of me. It can't be the original. What this is is a a re-envisioning of the concept, and it's a good one: it's white untoasted bread with butter (I sense butter CO2), a little bit of sugar, and cream. It's not the same Bread-and-Butterfly, but it's certainly a Bread-and-Butterfly.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! The essence of pleasure heightened by pain: the raw scent of leather. Oh, I don't want to be the first because I never smelled the original! But...wow. Just - wow. This is my Holy Grail leather scent. Not only is it gorgeously rough black leather, but smooth brown, and every other kind somehow wrapped into one. I want to roll around in sheets that smell like this. My clothes should smell like this. It's creamy, rich, and just delicious. I swoon when I smell my wrist. Strictly an at-home or date scent. Wow. I blind bottled this right away and I'm going to pick up another before they come down.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! Darkly seductive and lethally compelling: sinuous oponax, galbanum, dark wild berries, a drop of lush jasmine and a sliver of lime. Venom was one that I always wished I had a chance to try... Now I have it and will need a backup or 2 or 3! One of my first adult scents was Christian Diors Poison, and I loved it soooooo much. Rich, sweet, almost overwhelming, and just drop dead gorgeous. Its been reformulated and now smells like a super watered down version of the Poison I loved. But Venom..... Venom has that same richness, sweetness and feel. The notes are cleaner and clearer, and of course its not the same, but they absolutely have something in common. It may be the dark berry/jasmine combo? Whatever it is, it has that grab you in the back of the throat feel that I loved ... just beautiful. Rich and potent - definitely deadly.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! A scent swirling with dark rage, unbridled jealousy, and murderous intent. Violet, lavender, white musk and vetiver. (I did not smell original.) This starts out so powerful and sharp, for a moment I thought I mistakenly ordered a eucalyptus scent. It is a very strong lavender that receeds quite quickly into a softer violet with a hint of musk and vetiver. Short lived, low throw except for entrance.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! Electrifying, mechanized and chilly the scent of crushed blooms strewn on cold metal. Lush violet and neroli spiked hard with eucalyptus and a sliver of mint. I did not smell the original. This starts with a big kick of eucalyptus and that is all I can smell for the first 5 minutes. The eucalyptus gradually fades and a very rich violet emerges. I cannot detect the neroli or mint, but in the final drydown, the neroli comes to play briefly with the violet.

These long-dead scents are back for a limited time in a slightly tweaked form! The deepest, darkest point in a shadow; the area contained within the shadow of an eclipse. East African black patchouli, cedarwood, vetiver and a dribble of cinnamon. Original Umbra is one of my favorite BPALs, but I didn't discover its aged magnificence until after it was discontinued. I've only had a single imp that I was afraid to use more than once every few months until this resurrection was announced, and it became a holy grail. When I saw the announcement for this resurrection, I squealed and bought a bottle right away, with plans to buy more after I pay some bills. I'll be buying backups for sure. The bottle arrived on Monday and I couldn't wait to smell it, but I let it rest for a couple of days before I gave it a try. The overall effect of Umbra - Resurrected smells a bit like you're storing sticks of real cinnamon bark in a cedar box. Based on what I can remember of the original when it was fresh, the cedar is a little more prominent and there's probably less vetiver. This isn't overpowering on me, but I'm going to apply it sparingly because it's kind of dirty, like the original. (If you prefer clean scents then you probably weren't looking at this anyway.) I feel it will be a nighttime and weekend scent, when I've always liked to wear the original, and probably best saved for the cool months. It's got the potential to smell a little too dirty when body heat amps it. This is an empowering yet calming scent that I think will work on any gender.
