My Baby and a Baby Goat Look, I just wanted to make a scent for Lilith and this baby goat. Because it makes me happy and BECAUSE LOOK AT IT. LOOK AT THAT BABY GOAT. Fuzzy baby goat musk, goat’s milk accord, wild rice flower, and a little bit of farmer’s market honey. In The Bottle: Goat's milk for sure, sweetened with honey and rice flower. LOVE. Wet On Skin: the goat milk is still the dominant note. Huzzah! This is really delicious and creamy. Dry Down: I don't personally get any musk, but I'm not complaining, because the milk, honey and rice are just so wonderful together I can't even see how this scent could be improved upon. In All: I ADORE this scent. It's so beautiful, just brimming with love and sweetness. I predict this to be the sleeper hit of this year's Lillith scents.

Blood and Judgment So Well Commedled This year, Lilith started cultivating a love of Shakespeare, especially Hamlet. Man, this kid loves that play. I assumed, when we started talking about Shakespeare’s works, that she’d love the comedies, particularly Midsummer Night’s Dream and all its attendant fairies. Nope; it’s all about the mopey Prince of Denmark and his teen angst. When she started at her Shakespeare summer camp this year, one of her teachers asked which characters she liked best. She replied, “Horatio.” “Horatio? But he doesn’t have many lines, does he? Why do you like him so much?” “He’s Hamlet’s best friend, he’s always there for Hamlet, and he’s the only one that doesn’t die.” Wise words, kiddo! This is a photo that I took of her watching Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet with her trusty sidekick, Wednesday. The dog, for her part, is a huge fan of the Two Gentlemen of Verona. A little kid’s interpretation of Hamlet’s BFF. A scent of kindness and devotion, friendship and loyalty: soft brown leather and brushed suede with bourbon vanilla, toasted almond, tonka bean, and amber. This is the scent I was most excited about in my order, although I was a bit nervous about the almond. Unfortunately, it does go to cherry on me, and mixes with the leather in a way that makes it smell sort of like gasoline when it first hits my skin. That fades within a few minutes as the almond backs off. After dry down, I get mostly sweet, ambery leather. I can't detect the bourbon vanilla. The dry down is really nice, and I'm hoping some aging will mellow out the almond.

Sticky Eyeballs and Floppy Entrails Last year, Lilith helped us set up one of the maze rooms for her school’s Halloween party. Not only did she help prep prop guts, but during the event, she spent some time assisting us by hiding in front of a glass window and throwing eyeballs, dismembered rubber fingers, and entrails at passers-by. I love my kid. Sticky white glops of marshmallow and clotted cream with ropes of sinewy strawberry licorice whips and oozing pink jelly. Yum! Yummy! Yum! In the bottle: The very first thing I smelled upon opening my bottle was fluffy white marshmallows! Exactly what I wanted. Followed by creamy strawberry licorice. Very sweet candy scent. Wet on skin: Strawberry licorice and pink jelly are flopping around out in front big time on my skin! The clotted cream wafts around in the background but while it's wet I can't quite find the marshmallow. Dry down: The pinkness of the strawberry licorice and oozing jelly are still quite strong and have really great throw. The cream note helps tie them together and keep the blend from going overly sweet on me. The marshmallow starts to come out more and more. Final dry down: After a few hours this really settled down into exactly what I wanted. The marshmallow becomes the main remaining note and it is quite glorious. The cream just adds to the delicious marshmallow, giving the whole scent a fluffy soft aura. The marshmallow is so authentic at this point. The pink notes have died down a lot but their sweetness remains. This final dry down is perfect to me. The initial phases of this scent are pink sweet fluffy fun! The final dry phase is more marshmallow and cream on my skin and I absolutely love it. If you like sweet scents and/or marshmallow - try this one! Love it!

Muse of Fire O for a Muse of fire, that would ascend The brightest heaven of invention, A kingdom for a stage, princes to act And monarchs to behold the swelling scene! Then should the warlike Harry, like himself, Assume the port of Mars; and at his heels, Leash’d in like hounds, should famine, sword and fire Crouch for employment. But pardon, and gentles all, The flat unraised spirits that have dared On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth So great an object: can this cockpit hold The vasty fields of France? or may we cram Within this wooden O the very casques That did affright the air at Agincourt? O, pardon! since a crooked figure may Attest in little place a million; And let us, ciphers to this great accompt, On your imaginary forces work. Suppose within the girdle of these walls Are now confined two mighty monarchies, Whose high upreared and abutting fronts The perilous narrow ocean parts asunder: Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts; Into a thousand parts divide on man, And make imaginary puissance; Think when we talk of horses, that you see them Printing their proud hoofs i’ the receiving earth; For ’tis your thoughts that now must deck our kings, Carry them here and there; jumping o’er times, Turning the accomplishment of many years Into an hour-glass: for the which supply, Admit me Chorus to this history; Who prologue-like your humble patience pray, Gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play. Lilith performed this prologue with her Shakespeare camp this summer. It gave me chills every time I heard her practice her lines, and forevermore she will be my Muse of Fire. The image accompanying this scent is from the morning of her performance. Lilith, you inspire me every day. Your love of Shakespeare has reinvigorated my own, and it means the world to me that we have this to share with one another. My little Muse of Fire: an explosion of rainbow-hued flower petals dusted in sugar. In The Bottle: woah. That was something else. It was effervescent and colorful and sweet and sharp all at once. The "exploding" is accurate! (Pssst this is one of those "how does Beth DO that?!" moments for sure!) Wet On Skin: I honestly can't pull out a single type of flower. And it's not "floral" in the traditional sense (scents!). It honestly reminds of Hawaian Punch! Dry Down: This is making me think of :something: from childhood and I can't place what. It's like fizzy candy and magnolia trees in spring time and lemon lime soda and pixie stix all rolled into one. In All: Nostalgia, bottled. Beth, sometimes you break my heart. ❤️

Meus Amor Aeternus When our tarantula, Pinky, died, Lilith buried her. She cradled Pinky’s little body and placed her in a special box. She dug the grave with her own hands. She composed a memorial for Pinky, and spoke at her funeral. She laid a heart-shaped stone that she had found at the beach on her grave, and many months later, she still does what she can to tend Pinky’s grave. She has a reverence and respect for both life and death that is as beautiful to me as it is uncanny. Just recently, Lilith asked Ted and I to compose eulogies for our Soccer Mom Car, which was recently totaled, so we could share our memories of the car and let the car know how much she meant to us, thanking our poor, unfortunate SUV for keeping us safe for so many years. I love and treasure many things about my daughter, but to me, her big heart is her most beautiful aspect. She seems to love everyone and everything, she forgives all, and she truly values other people’s feelings. Lilith, you are a good person. You are a better person than I, I suspect, and it is an honor to be your mother. A cotton candy-suffused blend of Snake Oil and Dorian, touched by earthy green moss and raiz de moras, hope-filled vanilla bean, sweet honey, and joyous carnation. In the bottle: mostly honey, with a faint hint of red musk and something vegetal. It reminds me a bit of Womb Furie, but the honey is softer somehow, and the red musk is definitely far in the background. It is definitely more snuggly than sexy. Wet: This is one of the perfumes that disappears the instant it touches my skin. Nothing, nada, zero, zip. But it's cold today, so I'll give it half an hour to warm up. 30 minutes later: It came back! It's a skin-scent with low throw, but it's delicious. Honey-forward, slightly tangy. The Snake Oil is something I get in the throw more than when I stick my hand to my wrist -- I'd almost think it's something left on my clothes, except my clothes didn't smell like Snake Oil when I put them on this morning! I don't get cotton candy or moss, and I'm pretty sure the raiz de moras is blackberry root and not vetiver -- there is something in here that keeps reminding me of blackberry leaves, but nothing smoky or grassy about it. Drydown: The vanilla comes out a bit in the later drydown, but it's just grounding the scent. Basically, this is a light, non-sticky honey on me, with a hint of red musk and a bit of spice and greenness. The notes don't quite come together for me, but it feels like one of the perfumes that needs a month or so to fully come together.

Little Lady Macbeth “Lady Macbeth should have Macbeth and the king just play rock paper scissors to see who gets to be king. And then whoever wins has to play against her and if she wins, she gets to be king.” – Lilith coming up with solutions as we begin reading the Scottish Play. A Lilith’ized take on our Lady Macbeth scent, wherein ambition, covetousness, and manipulation are transformed into fairmindedness, equity, and a willingness to sometimes leave things to chance: sugared red currant and honey cake. In The Bottle: those of us that have a special spot for the sugary currants in Crumpet Rebellion, you will be VERY happy with this. Wet On Skin: Yes, this is a close scent sister to Crumpet Rebellion for sure. But it's got a subtlety that CR doesn't quite have. The "honey" part of the cake I think is making this more like a lovely scone, less a full Rebellion Dry Down: The honey is coming out more now, but the currant is making it sophisticated, like a sexy honey dust. And who wouldn't like sexy honey dust? In All: for those who love, or missed out on Crumpet Rebellion, his wont disappoint. A flaky, lightly sweet scone scent. Perfect for wearing to weekend brunch or having tea in the afternoon ☺️

Battle Fairy in Training Lilith loves her kung fu classes. She loves her sifu, she loves the exercises, she loves practicing her forms. (She’s alright with the meditation aspect, but let’s be real: she’s a kid, and would rather be doing somersaults.) This year, she attained her blue belt, and this scent was created to commemorate her achievement. Baby, I am so proud of you. You worked so hard, and it paid off. I am always, always proud of you. This Battle Fairy smells like blue cotton candy, strawberries, a plop of vanilla icing and a bit of crushed peppermint candy. To me, this is all sweet, delicious strawberries! When it goes on wet, I get initial hints of mint and cotton candy, but that only lasts a few seconds. After that, it's just sweet sugary strawberry all day long! It reminds me quite a bit of the strawberry jelly note in Strawberry Sufganiyot. If you're a fan of that one, you should give this a try! I'm glad I have a bottle!

Walking the Prime Meridian This is the scent of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich on a cold, stormy day in March: ancient oaks and deep green mosses dampened by rain and sea salt. I was not sure if this scent would work on me at all, but I took a chance and ordered it blind. It's fantastic! Very evocative of the description. It smells like a cold rainy day outdoors. To me it's gender neutral, the throw is medium. It's fresh and clean without being sharp, if that makes any sense. If these types of scents are your thing, I would give it a try!

Pop While in London this year, Lilith learned how to blow bubbles with her bubblegum. It may not sound like a big deal, but I really do think that blowing bubbles is one of childhood’s great milestones. It’s a momentous occasion to a 6-year old, and is certainly deserving of commemoration! This is the scent of the bubbles that she popped all over the city: strawberry bubblegum against a backdrop of chilly wind. This is similar to Jailbait and 'Lilith's Bubblegum and Roses' but has a much more fruit-forward tone to it. Definitely the top impressions are a wet, juicy, genuine Bazooka Joe like bubblegum. I think there's maybe a touch of a strawberry feel to it but I mostly get the uber-pink type, and I'm not getting much of the fleshy drydown in things like Strawberry Moon(s) of past. This has a little less spice to it but it still has the traditional bubblegum/tutti-frutti mild cinnamon vibe, but I don't think it's true cinnamon. Not getting burning. I'm really looking for wind or ozone, but I'm not finding it very prominent in Pop!. This is a magnificent candy/gum scent, and I love the picture (I wonder who the lady next to Lil is... she has been immortalized onto perfume!). I'll be satisfied with my stash of Lilith's Bubblegum and Roses, but this is also a charming alternative.

Ghost Revelry While we were at Kensal Green in March, Lilith began knocking on all the crypts to wake the ghosts. In her estimation, they were likely bored and lonely, and a party would do them some good. Lil is always very concerned about everyone’s happiness, both the living and the dead. A spectral shindig: damp mosses, fallen leaves, and soft woods swirled with an ethereal mist of white sandalwood, lilac, orris root, and moonflower. I was so excited for this, since the concept reminds me of a favorite scene from Fable 3, where all the ghosts in the cemetery have a party I don't smell anything in the bottle at all! On the skin it is very light and ethereal, with a prominent lilac note that I love. It feels very evocative of a peaceful old cemetery in the morning dew, or perhaps the evening mists? There is a bunch of greenery in this as well, but all of it stays very subdued. It's in the same family as last year's Ghost Houses, although that one was more powerful on me. Since the concept is supposed to be a ghost party, I might have liked something that gave it a little more oomph, since it's all very light. Definitely ghostly, though. I'm glad I have a bottle!

Give Me Thy Breath, My Sister “Give me thy breath, my sister,” exclaimed Beatrice; “for I am faint with common air! And give me this flower of thine, which I separate with gentlest fingers from the stem, and place it close beside my heart.” Lilith absolutely adores her carnivorous plants. She is doting and gentle… decidedly loving… and tends them with all of her precise, attentive Virgo care. She has a small pot of scarlet pink pitcher plants that are all her own, and two bogs that she shares with mom and dad. Rosy snap-traps, syrupy mucilage, and pink, ballooning bladders: a scent like honey cotton candy, with hints of mint, sugar crystals, and a hint of crisp, bog-moist greenery. In the bottle it's minty candy floss. When applied it's sharply mint first, then sugary mint like creme de menthe. After it dries its fruity and pink, reminding me most of Rosy Maple Moth but less citrusy, more minty. This would be a perfect early summer scent.

A Vast Similitude Interlocks All On the beach at night alone, As the old mother sways her to and fro, singing her husky song, As I watch the bright stars shining, I think a thought of the clef of the universes, and of the future. A vast similitude interlocks all, All spheres, grown, ungrown, small, large, suns, moons, planets All distances of place however wide, All distances of time, all inanimate forms, All souls, all living bodies, though they be ever so different, or in different worlds, All gaseous, watery, vegetable, mineral processes, the fishes, the brutes, All nations, colors, barbarisms, civilizations, languages, All identities that have existed, or may exist, on this globe, or any globe, All lives and deaths, all of the past, present, future, This vast similitude spans them, and always has spann’d, And shall forever span them and compactly hold and enclose them. Eternally lapping ocean waves at sunset, touched by the pale pinkish amber of the setting sun. Disclaimer: I am not really a lover of aquatics or amber (although I don't mind either), I just thought this seemed like such a unique and possibly beautiful combination. I'm not sure how helpful this is going to be as a first review, but I'll try my darnedest! In bottle (decant): Salty aquatic and something I can't quite place (is it the amber? the mysterious pink?). It honestly reminds me a little of sweat. Wet on skin: Again, very salty aquatic dominates. Even saltier than in the imp. I would compare it to Cthulhu (which is the only other aquatic blend I've tried that has worked on me). And yet something in the background is giving it a slightly feminine edge. Dry on skin: The amber starts to warm things up and eventually turns this into a soft, light skin scent. I'm wondering if there is a floral note in here, as well? I'm not even sure what to say about this other than that it is a warm, gentle (so gentle!) but salty aquatic with a certain air of romance befitting its title. This would definitely be appropriate for a work environment or other daytime wear, but there is also something so alluring about it that it might best be saved for moments when you need a little magic (although, hey, magic never hurt anyone in the workplace). Another successful aquatic for me! I don't know how much I'll end up wearing this, so I may be safe with a decant, but if I don't get a bottle, it's certainly not because the scent lacks appeal.
