Every leaf tells a story. Oh god it's so good. Okay so I've actually done the maple syrup thing. I've collected buckets of sap from tapped maple trees and dumped them in a sleigh and taken it all down to the sugar house. Actual maple sap has such a light, sweet smell, but this.... THIS smells like boiling that sap in the sugar house, all the rich, gorgeous steam filling the rafters with mesmerising patterns in the sunlight streaming through the board slats. The dead leaves note is strong at first but this is a scent that's primarily about the maple. This isn't pancakes, folks. This is maple magic.

[No additional description provided.] Dead Leaves and waxy sweet pumpkin spice. I really don't get candy corn per se from this but its' a very Fall blend - pumpkin spice, dead leaves, sugary. Medium throw and wear length.

[No additional description provided.] The hemp and moss combine with the dead leaves so I end with something very green and almost tomato leaf like, with a base of dirty frankincense. Again, not really a dead leaves blend. More like autumn in a dying garden patch. Good throw and wear length.

[No additional description provided.] this is my favorite out of the three DL scents I got. The pink peppercorn in it is similar to the one in Fake News. it has that tickle-your-nose, sweet-but-spicy quality to it. Combined with the DL note, it is truly lovely and innately autumnal. A relatively simple scent, only two notes, that does not morph or change on the skin. Beautiful on it's own but I'm very much looking forward to layering it.

[No additional description provided.] Imagine you’ve invited your 3 favorite people to eat dinner with you on Hallowe’en. All three are smart, interesting and attractive and you’re excited because you’re sure they’re going to love each other. But unexpectedly something goes awry! When the three arrive, not only are they not talking, they aren’t even acknowledging the others. OMG! Is the moon in Mercury? No. You’ve just sniffed your bottle of Dead Leaves, Lemon Verbena & Cedar. At least that’s how the blend affected me. Individually, the 3 notes are among my Top 10, especially the BPAL earthy, green-spiced dead leaves (as in Pile of Fallen Leaves). It can be mid-August with temps in the hundreds and murderous humidity but a sniff of the SN tricks my brain into imagining mushrooms, rain-soaked earth and drifts of maple leaves outside. The smooth, soothing, spicy warmth of cedar seemed like a natural complement to the bite of green, maybe adding a subtly darker spice to the base. I wasn’t so sure about the Lemon Verbena, even though L’Occitane Lemon Verbena soap is almost always in a soap dish somewhere in my house. At best, I reasoned, it would work with the green spice of the leaves to enhance their invigorating rush. At worst I worried it might sink the boat. I’m not savvy enough to know if that’s where this Dead Leaves blend veered off course. But that’s my guess since I “got” the references to Lemon Pledge I remember from reviews of other blends. Color me Sad. Hoping time would encourage the notes to cooperate, I was about to store my bottle. Then, on a whim, I decided to try a 50/50 mix with some of my beloved Pile of Dead Leaves. The result is a greener, spicier fragrance that seems more grounded (or rounded) than either blend alone. I’m completely delighted with my serendipitous concoction. Earlier, I had tried layering the two but being in the same bottle enables them to enjoy each other’s company more fully.

Dead Leaves, Bourbon, Black Cherry, and an Orange Twist
puellacaerulea posted a topic in Halloweenie
[No additional description provided.] In the bottle, this is intense black cherry and bourbon. Super sweet, super boozy; can't make out the dead leaves at all. After applying, the dead leaf note amps up a lot and balances out the sweetness/booziness nicely. The orange note also comes out more, but it stays mostly in the background. After a couple hours the cherry and bourbon notes are still there, but they're much more subtle and blend well with the dead leaf note. Overall, I'd say the black cherry is the strongest note here, but the dead leaves keep it from getting into sickly sweet territory. The notes balance out in such a way that the end result is a warmer, sweeter take on the Lab's dead leaf note.- 6 replies

[No additional description provided.] In the bottle all of the above listed notes kind of smash on the nose equally. The effect is similar to a drink I'd order at a Manhattan cocktail bar that would probably cost as much as this bottle -- a spicy pineapple margarita with smoked salt. IMMEDIATELY on the skin the notes fall into rank, with the pineapple's sweetness soaring high above the others, and the dead leaves effectively blanketing the patchouli and vetiver so they're muffled to a dull roar. This is among the least "dead leaves-y" blends from the collection IMO, probably because the pineapple note takes it in a direction one doesn't associate with "autumn." Ten minutes after applying, I'm getting a sort of dead leaves reverb effect whenever I go to sniff, which suggests that note will last on the skin long after the bright, sunny pineapple has perished. Brava!

[No additional description provided.] As a lover of violets, sugared florals, and dead leaves, I just had to get a bottle of this without sampling. It is everything I hoped it would be. A sweet floral that edges more on the sugary than the floral side with a gasp of cologny-dead leaves behind it. It's an unusual fall scent, and I think it could be worn year round, really. Another violet winner! Definitely pick it up if you think even one of the notes would appeal.

[No additional description provided.] Disclaimer: The bottle was *very* cold sitting out in the chilly 40's of Minnesota. In the bottle: 'Juicy' clove. Not straight up identifiable fruit, but a chewy undertone. Interesting. On me: Whoah clove! This is a strong warm spicy clove, with a slightly smokey touch (the ouhd and leaves is my guess). The fruitiness is gone. I'm a bit disappointed as I really wanted a plum heavy blend. But I'm going to let this warm up and settle for a few days, as I've had blends change after a couple of days. But I am going to try layering this with some plum heavy blends like Bordello and The Soul of La Travata. Verdict:While this (at this point) isn't the spicy plum of my dreams, this is surprisingly nostalgic inducing for me. I was a teenager in the 90's, and this is bringing me back to days of dancing at clubs and raves, when smoking indoors was legal, and my friends and I all smoked clove cigarettes. I can smell them. Hear the R&B by R. Kelly, rap by Snoop Dogg and Warren G, and grunge rock by Stone Temple Pilots and Bush. Makes me want to buy some Djarums, open a wine cooler, pop the earphones in and listen to the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet. Keeper.

[No additional description provided.] Of the 4 Weenies I bought, this was the biggest surprise. Probably because my previous Dead Leaves scents were heavy on the dead leaf part, especially my hair glosses - and so they really conveyed autumn. This one smells like reading a library book in a garden on an overcast summer day. The leaf and champaca blossom merge together and the coconut is just faintly there. It all works beautifully together, like something a shy goth girl would wear. I'm positive this will be popular because it's a light, pretty scent you could wear year round.
