    Leo 2007

As soon as I put this on, I’m struck by how foody it is. I can almost smell vanilla, but the creaminess doesn’t last very long. Quite quickly, this turns extremely sweet on me. It reminds me of cola syrup. I think it’s the sweetness of the amber mixed with more earthy scents like the walnut bark. I can smell the chamomile a little, but it’s not an obvious note. As this fades, it just gets lighter… it really doesn’t morph any more. I’ll stick with Sportive Sun for my warm, spicy, nutty comforting scent.

    Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller (2006)

Red musk, vanilla bean, pomegranate, patchouli leaf and wild plum. This smells a lot like Snake Oil on me… only deeper and more complex. There seems to be a bit of an incense note, and I can smell the musk as well as a bit of the patchouli leaf. There’s a definite medicinal undertone to the scent that turns me off a bit, and the vanilla lurks underneath everything making it just slightly sweet and creamy. This fades to a nice musk and incense scent with creamy vanilla, but that annoying medicine note is still there. I don’t know what it is, but both snake oil and Mme Moriarty have it!

    Gennivre, L’Artiste du Diable

This smells like citrus tea with a sharp and almost green bitter note. There’s also a baby bowder undertone, but that goes away almost immediately. It’s a very fresh, clean scent. This unfortunately faded very fast on me, but while it lasted it was a nice crisp citrus tea scent with a musky honey undertone. Usually I like tea scents, but this one isn’t for me.

    Melisande, The Puppet Mistress

This smells very perfume-y… I can smell jasmine and some very heavy musk. There’s really no vanilla bean warming it up on my skin at all or adding a creamy note. It’s rather simple and smells like old lady perfume on me, even after fading for a few hours.

    Van Van

In bottle/imp: Very sweet citrus or green scent with something smooth and creamy underneath. Immediately on skin: This smells a little nutty, bitter, and powdery on my skin. The citrus note is still there but it’s very light. This smells almost like powdered rubber gloves on me. After a few minutes: This smells mostly powdery now, with some nutty wood note in it. It’s not a sweet scent at all, and it almost smells medicine-y. Something in it is bugging me for sure. Later on: This is just very powdery right now. That nutty scent is still there in the background and the scent has stayed pretty strong. It’s too bad I don’t like it at all. As for how I feel when I use it... I don't feel more "powerful" since the scent really turns me off.

    Dragon's Musk

In bottle/imp: Dragon’s blood with a lot of musk. Immediately on skin: Dragon’s blood with a very bitter tone to it. This isn’t sweet at all and is rather dry. After a few minutes: What can I say? Dragon’s blood and musk. No sweetness. Kind of boring really… it’s like Dragon’s Heart without the slight sweet tone of the black currant. It is very strong, however. Later on: This blend has turned a little soapy on me… but I think that’s the nature of the beast. The same soapy scent hit me in Dragon’s Heart so it seems the combination of musk and dragon’s blood just doesn’t do well on me. This is very dry and if you are looking for a more unisex to masculine dragon’s blood scent, this one would be good to try.

    Maenad

In bottle/imp: Very sweet and a little bitter or tangy. Immediately on skin: This smells like fruit and a very green stem or leaf scent. It’s very strong and a little bit spicy as well. After a few minutes: The strawberry is strong in this, but it doesn’t seem plasticky on me like a lot of strawberry scents do from other places. It’s very sweet, but there is definitely a flowery undertone deepening the scent. I think it’s the hibiscus, since it seems like a crisper floral as opposed to spicy like the carnation would be. Later on: This has become a fruity and spicy scent. The strawberry is still very evident, but really is “distorted” by the florals in the blend. This is definitely worth another try.

    Severin

In bottle/imp: Very dark citrus tea. Immediately on skin: Lemon and tea with a definite leather scent underneath. After a few minutes: This is a lot more subtle than I thought it would be… the leather is a nice light note in the background, and the fresh tea scent is rather nice. The citrus that I first smelled seems to have disappeared though. It’s a very light unisex scent. Later on: This has faded quite a bit. The leather has come out a little, but it is a mellow scent rather than a sharp one which I usually get from the leather blends. It’s slightly powdery, but not in an unpleasant way. I really need to have my husband try this!

    Magdalene

In bottle/imp: Roses with a very sharp biting note. Immediately on skin: Sweet, powdery white roses with sharp note as well… the labdanum? The orchid adds another floral to the mix, but I don’t think it’s an obvious scent. After a few minutes: I absolutely love what bpal’s orchid does on my skin… it’s a beautiful sweet but dark floral scent! In this blend, it really mixes nicely with the roses. The initial powdery AND sharp notes are gone and I’m left with a lovely subtly sweet and dark scent. Later on: The scent has definitely faded a few hours later, but it’s still as beautiful as it was a few moments after I put it on. Slightly dusty, but sweet and deep. I need a big bottle of this one!

    Rakshasa

In bottle/imp: Spicy roses with a subtle earthy base. Immediately on skin: This is a very spicy scent… sandalwood, but also some sweeter spices as well like nutmeg or something. The rose adds a subtle floral note, and the patchouli seems to be giving the blend a nice base, but it’s not obvious. This smells almost cola like on my skin. After a few minutes: This has settled down to a spicy dirt scent. I’d imagine there are people who love the smell of dirt, but I’m unfortunately not one of them. I only smell a touch of the rose note, but the patchouli and sandalwood really scream in this blend. Later on: I swear this is a little woodsy after a few hours, but it may just be the patchouli. It’s sweet and earthy, but definitely not for me.

    Kiyohime Changes From a Serpent

I really love this scent. When I apply it, I can immediately smell fruit, green moss, and a very crisp clean scent. The green tea is also there, barely peeking through. There’s even a little bit of citrus, and a light floral note. It’s hard to describe because I can smell a bit of everything in it! It fades to this complex salty, fruity, and crisp clean scent. It really makes me think of the ocean and the beach.

    Death and Life Completed

This starts out as a very nice white fresh floral scent. After just a couple of minutes the sandalwood comes out and warms it up, and the carnation adds a slight spicy note. After wearing for a while, this smells more strongly of sandalwood and carnation with a powdery flowery undertone. It’s very pleasant and slightly warm and spicy, but still has a touch of flowers which keeps it fresh.

    Silence

At first this scent is very light… it’s almost an aquatic murky scent with a very light floral note to it. As I wear it, though, it becomes fresher and lighter with lovely complex floral notes and an underlying juiciness. This scent is very refreshing and I can definitely smell the tea and the peach under the flowers and musk. The sandalwood isn’t overpowering, but it adds something warm to the scent which I really love. Every time I put this on, at first I think to myself… “I like this?!?” Then after a few minutes Silence turns into this beautiful scent that I just can’t get enough of!
  14. Delirium1009

    The Penitent Magdalen

In bottle/imp: Very dry, sharp floral. Immediately on skin: Wafting, sharp floral… the lily is the strongest note for sure. It’s slightly creamy and almost powdery. After a few minutes: This scent has warmed up and is this creamy (but not very sweet) floral. The amber is definitely there, and maybe a bit of the musk. I don’t think I can smell the almond flower though. Later on: Very soft and sweet. I can smell the musk and sandalwood, and I think I can detect the almond flower peeking out as well. The floral notes are extremely well blended in this scent, and it is very pretty, feminine, and light.

The Fox-Woman Kuzunoha Leaving Her Child

This scent is very strong on the jasmine front for me. It’s very crisp with a green undertone too it, but the jasmine is definitely in charge. After a while, a very clean and crisp white tea note comes out and blends really beautifully with the jasmine. I’d imagine the other florals are there, but they’re not strong enough that I can pick them out. The teak also doesn’t come out on me, which is good because I’m not a big wood note fan. This is nice and I have to try it again… it might be big-bottle worthy, but I’m not sure yet.

    Bat-Woman

When I first put this on, it’s very green and floral with a bit of a powdery bite underneath. It’s very crisp as well. But as I wear it, it definitely fades nicely. The floral notes lighten up and the amber comes out and makes the scent much warmer. It’s a nice floral scent without being too perfume-y. I don’t know if I’d buy a big bottle of this, but it’s definitely worth another try.
  17. Delirium1009

    Chuparosa

As soon as I put this on, I can smell roses and some other very crisp and almost green floral notes. It’s even a little spicy, but in more of a flowery than cinnamon way. This scent is very complex and doesn’t morph much on my skin. It’s very pretty without being overly perfume-y as well, which I’m always afraid of with floral blends that I don’t know the specific notes of. I definitely need a big bottle of this!

    Calliope

In bottle/imp: I can smell the lavender and mint very strongly, and warm almond peeking out. Immediately on skin: This scent is very astringent. The lavender is the main note, but mixed with it I can smell the mint, verbena, and thyme. After a few minutes: This is extremely herbal on me after a little bit. The lavender has faded, and now I can smell the thyme quite strongly. There’s also a very light touch of mint. Later on: This is still very herbal and sharp… the lavender is barely there but adds a “high” note to the scent. It’s like taking a pinch of thyme, grinding it against my skin, then sniffing… it’s very fresh and herbal.

    Dragon's Heart

In bottle/imp: Dragon’s blood with a lot of musk! Immediately on skin: Dragon’s blood with a slightly soapy and musky undertone and just a tiny bit of sweetness. After a few minutes: This is a very strong blend… the dragon’s blood is very evident, and the musks blend in to add depth. It still smells soapy though, but I think that’s just the way the combination translates to my nose. Later on: This has sweetened slightly as it’s faded. The staying power is pretty good, and the dragon’s blood is still strong and deep. The musks peek through the blend and really complement the dragon’s blood well. Overall, it’s very nice but the extra notes don’t add a lot to the dragon’s blood.

    Morocco

In bottle/imp: Carnations and musk… very sweet! Immediately on skin: This is very pretty. The carnation is the strongest note… it’s sweet and spicy, and some other spices lurk just underneath it. I can smell the sandalwood slightly. After a few minutes: Sweet, creamy carnations. It’s very warm and creamy and not as earthy as I was expecting. Later on: This scent is beautiful, but I was expecting something much spicier. It’s a warm, golden scent with a lot of carnation and a little musk. I think it smells a lot like the creamy carnation base in Zarita.
  21. Delirium1009

    Lyonesse

In bottle/imp: Almost foody vanilla and honey with a musky base. Immediately on skin: Strong vanilla, light musk, and a light touch of flowers. After a few minutes: Almost foody, but not quite. The vanilla reminds me of the condensed milk note in Shadwell. I can smell the musk and a slight touch of sandalwood. There’s also just a tiny bit of lily adding a slight clean note to the blend. Later on: This is a gorgeous, soft, sweet vanilla and musk scent. It’s very strong on me, but it’s a complex scent so I don’t mind… and it’s not too foody either which is nice. It’s a sweet rich vanilla deepened by the amber and sandalwood with a light touch of musk and clean lily.

    Searching for the Perfect Vanilla?

I'd recommend seeing if you can find a decant of Shadwell to try... that is a very sweet, creamy scent (it reminds me of the vanilla in Lyonesse) with a touch of a colognish scent, maybe bergamot. It's a very comforting scent to me. I'd imagine it would smell really good on a guy who does well with vanilla notes.

    Urania

In bottle/imp: Very cool, floral, and clean-smelling. Immediately on skin: Very cool floral with almost a touch of a pine note. It’s very crisp and clean smelling. After a few minutes: I can smell the jasmine, though it’s mixed with other cooler florals. It’s very pretty and light, and definitely a “blue” scent, though not aquatic. Later on: Very soft and light… and very pretty. This is a very well blended scent and I really can’t pick it apart.

    The Sportive Sun

In the bottle and when I first apply this, it is a very dry scent. After just a couple of minutes the warm amber comes out and smells golden and warm and the almond flower adds a creamy, soft note to the blend. The cedar adds a bit of dryness to the background, but it is not very obvious. The heliotrope, frangipani, and calamus aren’t very strong on me (I can barely detect any florals at all) until wearing a little while... then they just add a floral sweetness to the warm amber base scent. It’s truly a golden and sunny scent. This is definitely one of my favorites!

    The Emathides

This starts out very sharp and "screeching" on me, but that phase doesn't last very long. I can smell the warm amber, the orchid, the sweetness of the black currant, and the sharp twang of the lavender, but they (and all the rest of the notes) all blend together to create a scent that is resinous, deep, smoky, and rich. If this scent could be a color, it'd be dark and smoky blue-purple. This is absolutely gorgeous and a little sure goes a long way.
