    Carnal

In bottle/imp: Very sweet sugary citrus candy. Immediately on skin: This smells like citrus candy (heavy on the sugar, light on the citrus), plus a slight soft smooth fruit note. It’s a very sweet scent, and bright and happy. After a little while: This has gotten more defined as I wear it. It’s still a very sweet, bright mandarin candy scent, but it has just a touch of warm, smooth fig in the background. It’s not very complex, but it is nicely blended. The notes go together seamlessly. Overall Impressions: This is such a fun scent. It’s candy-like and definitely for those who like sweeter scents. I’d say that if you liked March Hare, you might like this blend as well. Personally I like a little more depth in the perfumes I wear but I could see being in the mood for something like this every so often.

    Brisingamen

In bottle/imp: Pine? But soft, warm pine. Immediately on skin: Ok, now this is making a bit more sense… the pine I’m getting is actually a mix of the amber and something floral—probably the myrtle since I’ve never smelled that before. This is a warm but slightly dry scent with some soft floral notes blending in. After a little while: This has turned into a very faint, warm amber scent. There’s still a hint of florals, but they’re not very identifiable. I’d say carnation, but I usually love carnation and I don’t really care for this one. It has a slightly plastic edge that I seem to get from some of the lab’s ambers. Overall Impressions: This is a very soft scent and hard to break down, so I guess I would say it’s well blended. But overall this isn’t a very impressive or strong scent on me.

    Bordello

In bottle/imp: Strong, sweet plum candy. Immediately on skin: This smells of strong plums and currants, but not fresh ones… more like if they were made into a sour candy. It’s a bubbling, fizzy scent… very playful. It’s very fruity and sweet though. After a few minutes: This blend is still very strong, fruity, and fizzy. It's a plum/berry fruit scent, with a strong boozy undertone. It's sweet and has an almost sour candy feel to it. To my nose, it smells a lot like berry Nerds. Overall Impressions: If you’re a fan of sweet, fruity scents (especially plum or currant), give this one a try. On me, this is extremely sweet with a fizzy/sour candy quality to it. I don’t really like it on me, but I can understand why others enjoy it.

    Bien Loin D'Ici

In bottle/imp: Red musk and powdery resin. Immediately on skin: This is musky and powdery on me… very powdery. There is a bit of red musk though, and some light spices. Otherwise this is a very dry scent. After a little while: This smells musky and medicinal. I get no caramel or sweet honey from this… just dry musk and medicinal smelling resin. There’s even some plastic in there too. Very disappointing. Overall Impressions: This is so very wrong on me… I love sweeter blends but this has no sweetness on me whatsoever, even with the caramel accord and golden honey notes. This is dry but somehow thick at the same time, and musky with a plastic medicinal tone.

    Bathsheba

In bottle/imp: Musky, warm spiced plum. Immediately on skin: This is a very light scent once I put it on. It smells mostly of sweet and warm carnation, but there’s also a nice undertone of plum and the musk swirling throughout the whole blend. After a little while: Soft, warm, fruity carnation. This is so pretty even though it’s rather light on me. It seems to stay very close to the skin, but it wafts gently with a nice sweetness. This blend isn’t overly sweet at all though. The carnation, plum, and warm musk are all very well balanced so they all blend together well and no one note overpowers another. Overall Impressions: A fruity, soft carnation blend. This is just so pretty with the gentle and smooth spiciness of the carnation blending with the musk and juicy plum. This is really a wonderfully balanced blend. It’s feminine and very sexy since it clings so close to the skin. If you like carnation blends and don’t mind a little fruitiness, I definitely recommend this blend.

    Ave Maria Gratia Plena

In bottle/imp: Dry and extremely powdery with a touch of lemon. Immediately on skin: This smells very dry and powdery. There’s a bit of blonde woods and a hint of jasmine and lily. This almost smells exactly like baby powder on me however; the notes I’ve described are barely there. After a little while: Dry, musky, and lemony… that is what this smells like. There’s a hint of lily, but no other floral notes. This is almost plastic-y on me. Overall Impressions: This was a huge disappointment all around. It’s super powdery on me and rather dull. The lemon peeks through, but I wouldn’t say this is really a refreshing blend… it’s too “thick” smelling for that.

    Sloth

In bottle/imp: Deep, dark vetiver and myrrh with spices… and maple syrup? Immediately on skin: The first sniff I take of this on my hand, it reminds me of french toast with maple syrup. I mean the good stuff with some spices baked in and real maple syrup… not the fake stuff. Of course, that’s just what this reminds me of. It doesn’t really smell like french toast though. This is a thick vetiver and myrrh scent, like the description says. The vetiver is so smoky and the myrrh is thick, dark, and spiced with a rich sweetness. After a little while: This has changed into something a bit more perfume-like… the thick syrupiness of the myrrh has lightened, but it still lends a strong sweet, resinous, and slightly spiced feel to the blend, while the vetiver has become a little less heavy and smoky. Overall Impressions: This blend is very deep, dark, and slightly sweet. At first it eerily reminds me of french toast, but then it fades to a less foody mix of dark vetiver and very deep, rich myrrh. I think this one would probably smell great on a guy too, but it’s a very rich scent.

    Sea of Glass

In bottle/imp: Almost citrus-y ozone. Immediately on skin: This is a clean ozone type scent with a citrus edge. It’s very “high” and has a salty twist to it. It seems like this almost has no base to this blend; it is a very airy scent that twists and turns as I smell it, but never settles. After a little while: This has lightened up a bit, but it hasn’t really changed all that much. It’s still a very clean ozone scent with a bit of a light citrus feel. This also smells quite unisex… it’s very crisp and refreshing. Overall Impressions: This is a great scent if you really like ozone blends. It’s not too heavy or overly sharp, but it is very crisp and clean. This is definitely a unisex blend and I really don’t see it as easing into either masculine or feminine… it is totally gender neutral. It does remind me of Irish Spring and the like, but most ozone lends do.

In bottle/imp: Dark wood and patchouli with wafting bay rum and an undercurrent of rose. Immediately on skin: This is a more masculine scent for sure. The spicy bay rum seems to be the highest note, and it is grounded by dark patchouli and wood notes. The musk in this is definitely warm and amber-esque, and permeates the whole blend. This is rather dry and warm, but the bay rum adds an almost crisp note. After a little while: The patchouli and woods have faded a bit in this, and now it’s a mainly bay rum and light amber scent. It’s actually more unisex now, but still on the masculine side. The tea rose also sneaks in the background of this, but it’s not an overly rosey scent at all. This is a airy bay rum scent with a nice helping of amber musk wafting through, and then subtle patchouli and wood in the background and a base of smooth rose. Overall Impressions: There are very few masculine fragrances I’d wear, bpal or no. This is definitely on the masculine side and not for me, but it is a very nice scent. The large helping of bay rum is very fresh, but the amber musk warms it up nicely, and the patchouli, wood, and rose give this a nice, solid base.

    Voodoo

In bottle/imp: An odd earthy/citrusy/creamy mix with a little hint of cola. Immediately on skin: This is a very weird scent. It’s earthy but sweet and almost effervescent at the same time. Out of all the notes I get the patchouli, vetiver and myrrh blending, then the lime as a top note with the vanilla and almond blending in. It’s almost like citrusy cream soda poured over slightly spicy dirt. After a little while: The lime note has really all but disappeared, and now this is a warm and slightly creamy patchouli blend. The almond and vanilla add a nice warm sweetness to the gritty patchouli. The myrrh and vetiver just add depth to the patchouli base, giving it a slight smokiness and a little spice. Overall Impressions: This starts out just odd, but it calms down to a very nice patchouli blend on me. The combination of patchouli, myrrh, vetiver, almond, and vanilla seems very warm and wearable. I would say this is a more unisex scent. Unfortunately I really don’t like patchouli, so it’s not something I would wear.

    Bliss

In bottle/imp: Silky, creamy, and slightly powdery milk chocolate. Immediately on skin: One of my favorite scents is El Dia de Reyes, and this smells like that without the cinnamon and coffee. It’s sweet and creamy chocolate with a slightly powdery feel, like really good powdered cocoa. After a little while: This turns dry and powdery on me pretty quickly. It still smells of chocolate, but it’s no longer as rich and creamy on me. Overall Impressions: This is a nice chocolate scent, but I wish that it had stayed the same rich, creamy chocolate scent it was when I first put it on. I can see why this one gets a lot of love, and I’d consider trying this out in a scent locket for sure.

    The Hesperides

In bottle/imp: Light vapor-like floral perfume and golden delicious apples (very sweet and not very tart). Immediately on skin: This smells of perfume-y apple. It’s light and smells pretty and like apples, but not like a real one if that makes any sense. It’s a very fresh, lovely scent though. After a little while: This has sweetened on my skin and now it’s a generic sweet perfume that smells vaguely of apple. I don’t really get any other notes from this… maybe some sort of floral, but it’s really just very sweet, pretty, and lightly apple-smelling. Overall Impressions: This is a nice, innocent, sweet apple scent. I’ve heard very good things about it, but I think it’s mostly my chemistry that seems to change the lab’s apple note to something more floral and perfume-y than crisp and realistic. I’m sure this is probably gorgeous on the right chemistry, so if you are looking for a nice apple scent then you should try this. It’s an innocent apple to Poisoned Apple’s corrupted feel.

    Hermia

In bottle/imp: Warm, sweet pepper and subtle floral notes. Immediately on skin: The pepper hits me first, but it’s warm and inviting. It has a gentle bite… not sharp or overbearing. The warm amber is the base of this, and there’s just a light breath of flowers. It reminds me of something, but I have no idea what. After a few minutes: This is a very fun fragrance. The pink pepper is just girly, but with a total kick; it’s spiced, but sweet and a little soapy. The amber in the background adds a creamy warmth to the base, and the passion flower (honeysuckle is my favorite floral fragrance and I don’t smell it here) adds a subtle fruity floral tone. Overall Impressions: Hermia is girly with a kick… it’s feminine, but not overwhelmingly so and has a lot of attitude. The pepper is peppery, of course, but it’s not really spicy. It’s an interesting blend, and something I wear quite a bit!

What do bottles and labels look like?

What do bottles and labels look like?

This just made me realize that every bottle I own is a LE blend. I presume GC bottles all look like Snake Oil's label? The aged look with carnival-esque font type? No, Snake Oil has a different label design than most of the other GCs. The regular catalog labels look like the middle bottle in this picture: http://www.bpal.org/index.php?autocom=gall...si&img=1533 Rappaccini's Garden, Carnaval Diabolique, A Picnic in Arkham and a couple other sections (as well as a few random blends like Schrodinger's Cat and Snake Oil) have different labels, but most GC labels look like the one in that picture.

    Sugar Moon 2008

Sugar cane, blue musk, mahogany, black orchid, black currant, violet, blackberry leaf, teak, strawberry, and dusky rose. In bottle/imp: This smells rich and deep with a thick resinous undertone. It also smells a little like nail polish remover and also like the Emathides. Immediately on skin: The first thing that hits me is that this reminds me a lot of the Emathides (I looked it up and they share black orchid, black currant, violet, and blue musk notes), but plus a deep, resinous caramel note and a hint of strawberries. It’s a very thick, deep scent with the teak and violet mixing to give it a slight perfume-y edge, and the blue musk giving it a slight cool tone. After a little while: The strawberry has come out in this a little more and the very thick syrupy tone has receded completely. On my skin this is now a rich and deep mix of delicate strawberry, teak (which is very perfume-y on me), a slight wood note from the mahogany, and the cool rich mix of black currant and orchid, violet, and blue musk. Overall Impressions: This starts out a little strong on the syrupy sugar, but it calms down quickly and really becomes a very deep, complex scent. It’s on the cooler side, but it also has a nice thick sweetness that is very well controlled, as well as a hint of fruity strawberry. This strongly reminds me of the Emathides, so I really think fans of that blend may like this. Otherwise, those who like the lab’s more complex, deep, and sweeter scents will probably enjoy this if it behaves on their skin.

    Hanami

In bottle/imp: Very cool, perfume-y flowers. Immediately on skin: This smells of very expensive, traditional perfume. But I don’t mean that in a bad way. It’s a slightly sweet and cool floral scent with just a very feminine feel. It’s not overly girly or fruity, but it smells clean and lovely. The wisteria is what is giving it such a cool and deep feel I believe, but the ume blossoms (plum blossoms) and sakura (cherry blossoms) give it a very nice wafting airy quality at the same time as well as a gentle sweetness. After a little while: This has lightened up a little, but it’s still a slightly sweet and cool clean floral. It’s perfume-y and feminine while still retaining a little depth from the mix of cooler and sweeter floral notes. Overall Impressions: This is just a very pretty, feminine, clean scent. It’s a very floral blend and smells much like traditional perfume to me, but it has that depth that you can only get from the lab’s creations. It’s well balanced and on the cooler side, but it still brings to mind thoughts of spring. I think this may appeal to those who enjoy blends like Dirty.

    Rose Cross

In bottle/imp: Rose incense. Immediately on skin: This is just like the description says: roses and frankincense. The rose is a little lemony almost, and the frankincense is a little bit of a sharp note. But they’re blended together very well. After a little while: This has lost the little sweetness it had and has become very sharp on me. The rose and frankincense are still both present, but the rose lost it’s smoothness and the frankincense is rather dark and bitter. Overall Impressions: This one didn’t work on me… I’m not sure why the notes turned so disappointing, but this just turned sharp and sort of acrid on me.

    Roadhouse

In bottle/imp: A very smooth fruitiness with some light green notes and an underlying slight earthy tone. Immediately on skin: This is almost fruity, but it’s not overly sweet. It smells almost like light grass plus something like those white or clear gummy bears (not really overwhelmingly OMG fruit, but sweet and slightly fruity). It has a nice green and earthy mixed feel to it, plus that subtle and almost innocent candy sweetness. After a little while: This is light, refreshing, a little fruity, and just slightly “green” smelling. It’s a sweet blend, but not overly so. The scent seems to be pretty complex and very well blended as there’s a lot going on, but there’s put together in a way that I can’t identify any of the specific notes. Overall Impressions: Wow, this was totally unexpected… I love this blend! It’s slightly fruity and sweet, but there’s a lot of complexity to this with a little hint of green and smooth, earthy notes to this. It reminds me a lot of dirty in the way that it’s refreshing, but still complex and wearable. This is definitely a cheerful scent, and I’d imagine it would be lovely in spring. This also seems subtle enough to wear any time.
  21. Delirium1009

    Pride

In bottle/imp: Slightly lemony rose and subtle white florals. Immediately on skin: As soon as I put this on my skin, this scent backed off big time… the lemony twist went away and it settled into a soft mix of rose and drier, tangy white florals. After a little while: The blend has really livened up on my skin and gotten rather strong. The rose and narcissus are both strong, but well-balanced. They don’t really mix together, but they blend a little. Overall Impressions: This is a bit strong, and very floral. It would be a really nice spring scent for sure, and is very feminine. It feels almost “yellow” to me and the narcissus has an almost citrusy feel. Very pretty, and very wearable but not for me.
  22. Delirium1009

    Lust

In bottle/imp: Thick, sweet resinous musk and smooth patchouli. Immediately on skin: This is gritty patchouli and musk, like Smut’s dirtier cousin (and by dirtier I don’t mean kinkier… I mean dirty like “rolling around in the dirt” dirty. It’s deep and musky with that harsh patchouli blending in and the resinous myrrh permeating the whole blend. This one has layers that I can smell almost. After a little while: This has transformed into a primarily myrrh scent with some dry musk and undertone of patchouli. It’s sweet, but deep, and definitely a dark, lustful scent. Overall Impressions: Dirt blends don’t really suit me, and most patchouli blends smell of dirt on me. This one is dominated by the myrrh, but it’s still very much a musky patchouli blend as well. If you tend to like myrrh and patchouli, this is a unisex blend that may suit you.
  23. Delirium1009

    Les Infortunes de la Vertu

In bottle/imp: Strong strong strong oakmoss with a slight hint of leather and a subtle warmth in the background. Immediately on skin: This is very unisex and sharp. There’s a bit of complexity to this, which is nice. It’s dominated by oakmoss but there’s a hint of leather and some light warm amber in the background. A breath of incense smoke wafts over the blend, but it’s light and there’s almost an evergreen, fresh feel to this. After a little while: This smells very fresh and masculine. The oakmoss still dominates this blend, but the leather has amped up a bit as well. The whole blend has this smoky top note to it, but I’d say this is more crisp than smoky or earthy. Overall Impressions: This is a more unisex to masculine blend and the oakmoss and leather are definitely the strongest notes. It’s a fresh smelling scent, but it has a nice subtle smokiness to it. If you are a fan of oakmoss and are looking for something a bit smoky and unisex, I would recommend this for sure.
  24. Delirium1009

    Languor

An opiate torpor, soporific, trancelike, and sublimely languid. A poet’s morphine dream, a listless journey into a gentle dream and the precipice of intoxicated madness. Paperwhite and black narcissus, three lilies, black poppy and tuberose and a hint of hypnotic opium den haze. In bottle/imp: Soft, smooth narcissus blended with a hint of opium. Immediately on skin: This is a floral blend… mostly smooth narcissus and fresh lilies with a hint of smokiness and tuberose in the background. It’s a drier white floral blend with the sweeter tuberose peeking through. After a little while: This has deepened quite a bit and turned into a smoky, mysterious and slightly sweet floral scent. This has blended together very nicely; the individual notes don’t really stick out anymore, though I can still sense the narcissus, the smoky opium, and the sweetened tuberose. The lilies have really disappeared which is great since they sometimes go soapy on me. Overall Impressions: This started out as nothing special, but it really deepened beautifully on my skin. It’s smoky and deep with a nice smooth feel and a touch of sweetness from the tuberose. I don’t know if I’d wear this, but I definitely like it.
  25. Delirium1009

    The Great Sword of War

In bottle/imp: Chocolate and light, fizzy citrus. Immediately on skin: This is a very odd combination. I definitely get cocoa… slightly sweet and not really creamy but more like powdered cocoa, and I also get some light fresh citrus tea. The tonka blends in and gives this a warm creaminess, which doesn’t quite blend in. This blend is very busy and everything seems to be fighting for dominance as opposed to blending together. After a little while: The chocolately feel has backed off, and this is now a very sweet citrus tea and tonka scent with a bit of an earthy base from the cocoa and tobacco leaf. The saffron adds a slightly warm, gentle lick of spice. Overall Impressions: This is much sweeter on me than I was expecting. It’s an interesting blend for sure, and must be quite the morpher when tried by different people. The mandarin, tonka, and cocoa combination is very unusual, but kind of interesting. I wouldn’t wear this, but it’s definitely been an experience trying it.
