    Madame Tracy

In bottle/imp: Strong lily and tea rose. Very much a clean floral scent. Immediately on skin: This is very floral, but it smells like a floral scent you’d find in soap, or something like that. The lily is very strong, and the tea rose comes in behind. This is a very heavy fragrance. After a few minutes: This isn’t floral anymore… it’s FLORAL. It screams out LILY and TEA ROSE. Those are the two strongest notes, and they may as well be the only ones because they’re all I can smell. Overall Impressions: This is a strong lily and tea rose perfume scent. They’re clean, girly, and screaming, quite frankly. I know these notes are supposed to be lady like and demure, but they’re so strong in this blend that they give the feel of someone not so lady like putting way too much dusting powder on to try and seem proper. This smells to me of traditional perfume but amped up quite a bit.

    Ligur

In bottle/imp: Deep, dark vetiver and dampness. Immediately on skin: Wow… strong, soggy vetiver. It’s odd, but this actually smells damp. It has an almost animalistic musky feel to it. There’s also a very slight sweet resinous note in this, but it’s very light. After a few minutes: This is just… wrong. It smells like mildew and vetiver on me. There’s no sweetness, just damp, dark decay and vetiver. It’s smoky but cloying. Overall Impressions: This is an odd scent. It’s dank and dark and smoky… and very icky on my skin. It smells like a cardboard box damaged in a fire, then left around in a puddle of water to mildew for a while.

    Hastur

In bottle/imp: Slightly sour and sweet dark, gritty resin. Immediately on skin: The first thing that strikes me is that this is very smooth smelling. The mixture smells sweet and resinous, but there’s also a sour smoky feel to it. The patchouli really grounds this scent, and the tobacco is a little sweet. This manages to be resinous, earthy, and smoky at the same time and it’s well balanced. After a few minutes: The patchouli has come out a bit more and this is more smoky and earthy rather than resinous now. The smokiness has taken on a darker, more sinister quality and the sweetness in this has toned down a lot. Overall Impressions: This scent is definitely on the masculine or unisex side. It’s heavy on the labdanum and patchouli, and it has a rich, dark depth to it. The smokiness to this one smells almost sinister, which is pretty impressive. This isn’t for me, but it’s a very interesting scent to sniff.

    Famine

In bottle/imp: Lilac and musk with a strong resinous undertone. Immediately on skin: This is a very syrupy blend on me. It smells like sweet, resinous incense and a hint of very heavy floral and musk perfume. The lilac, white musk and frankincense are very obvious. After a few minutes: The lilac has settled down a bit. This is a heavy, incense type scent on me. It’s thick, sweet, smoky frankincense with some spicy and perfume-y notes underneath. There’s a hint of the tobacco leaf, and it mixes nicely with the frankincense. It smells very unisex and musky. It’s a very “full” scent for it’s name. Overall Impressions: I expected this to be more of a refreshing and “empty” scent, but it is actually very rich. The frankincense is the strongest note, and the others just sort of back it up. The lilac and musk add a nice unisex touch, and the tobacco leaf adds a dry sweetness to the blend. I can’t find the tea at all, which is disappointing since I love the lab’s tea scents. I would call this blend unisex for sure, and if you enjoy frankincense scents, you might want to give this a try.

    The Buggre Alle This Bible

In bottle/imp: Leather and sweet vetiver. Immediately on skin: I get a very strong vetiver feel from this blend. It’s odd, since it’s not mentioned in the notes. I guess what I’m smelling is a mixture of the leather and a mildewed paper kind of note. There’s a bit of smokiness here, and a slight sweetness from the tobacco. After a little while: This smells considerably less mildewy once settled. It smells like leather and tobacco with wet paper. It has a slight smoky bitterness to it as well. Overall Impressions: This smells like an old leather bound book, and the smell of tobacco and incense wafting about. It’s oddly evocative, and has a mostly dry scent except for the paper, which smells a bit damp. This has a slight cologne-y feel to it, and is definitely unisex. It’s dark, smoky, and nicely blended. It’s a weird way to explain it, but this just smells like a very solid, grounded scent.

What do bottles and labels look like?

I read somewhere that all scents now come in amber bottles, and any cobalt bottles are just left overs from when they stopped using them, whenever that was (before I got into bpal last July at least).

Choosing a scent for an antique trunk

What an interesting idea! I'd probably either make a spray and spray it in the inside, or use a cotton ball to apply maybe an imps worth straight to the sides and bottom (let dry before using, of course). I'd imagine Seance would be gorgeous inside a trunk, or I'd use a linen type of scent like White Rabbit or Antique Lace. Dirty might be nice, too. That's more "clean" than bookish, though.

    The Robotic Scarab

In bottle/imp: Light, sweet leather and spices. Immediately on skin: This is much sweeter than I was expecting. This feels very metallic and shiny, and has a bit of sweet spices and a definite oily smell to it, though it doesn’t smell cloying. It has a hint of ozone in the far background. After a little while: This smells very polished, and shiny, but warm with hints of the leather and very sweet, miscellaneous spices (almost cinnamony, actually). It’s hard to describe because this is one of those blends that is so nicely blended that it just creates a perfect blending, and the individual notes almost get lost. Overall Impressions: This scent is much sweeter than I was expecting. It’s an interesting scent, and like most of the other Steamworks blends, is unisex. This smells shiny and warm, with hints of the leather and spices… maybe some soft resins too. This smells coppery-red in color and has an odd dry but glossy feel to it (I’m talking about the scent, not the actual feel of the oil). This is a must-try for anyone that likes spicier scents.

    Galvanic Goggles

In bottle/imp: Very metallic and cologne-y with soft musk and tobacco in the background. Immediately on skin: This scent smells like a very clear, “fresh” type of note with sweet, warm musk and tobacco blending in. It has a very distinct cool/warm thing going on. After a little while: The cooler notes in this have come out a little more and become a much stronger ozone/cologne type of scent. Blending into this (but taking a backseat to the stronger cooler notes) are soft musk and the tobacco flower. This is creating something very fresh smelling with undertones of sweet muskiness and tobacco. Overall Impressions: When I smell this, I love it… but not for me. My husband tried this before me and fell in love with it, and now when I tried it I understand why: it’s well balanced, very “fresh” smelling, but has a nice muskiness to balance that cool cologne feel. A woman could probably wear this, but to me, this is just a great masculine type of scent. Definitely a winner!
  10. In bottle/imp: Warm, smooth teak. Immediately on skin: The teak is the main note in this blend, and all the others seem to blend into it. It’s sweet and woody with a very musky feel (probably from the black vanilla and tobacco). This is definitely unisex and VERY sexy. After a little while: The teak calms down a little and blends into the other notes a bit more. This is a sexy, dark, slightly sweetened woody scent. It has just enough sugariness to balance out the wood notes, and isn’t creamy from the vanilla as much as just sweet and sexy. Overall Impressions: I really like this. It’s a unisex blend and very sexy and deep. The combination of the notes is woody, sweet, and smoky. The black vanilla is gorgeous in this and the teak is kept in check nicely by the other notes.

    The Stormhold

In bottle/imp: Very damp vetiver and ozone. Immediately on skin: Eek. This is the vetiver that smells a little like mildew to me. It’s smoky, but damp. There’s also a bit of ozone to this, and a hint of salty aquatics. After a little while: This scent has gotten very light on me. It’s very smooth now… a mix of light, damp vetiver, ozone, and moss. This feels very grounded and solid, but also has the ozone floating about which gives it a slight airy quality above that. Overall Impressions: This is a perfect scent to represent Stormhold. It’s dark, murky, stony, and very airy. This is a more unisex scent without much sweetness… it’s mostly that wet vetiver with ozone and moss, but it has a complex feel which is nice. This is definitely a blend with a solid base, but also a nice airy quality that gives it that complexity. It was a nice experience to try it, though I don’t think I’d wear this.

    Lady Una

In bottle/imp: Blackberries and honey. The honey smells quite powdery. Immediately on skin: This is a very sweet blend with quite a bit of dusty, powdery honey and soft blackberry. The vanilla bean is very creamy and acts as a nice base. After a few minutes: This has gotten sweeter on my skin and the blackberry is more evident now. The blackberry note doesn’t smell green though; it smells like the fruit through and through (there’s even the hint of cat pee I sometimes get from other blackberry bath and body products). The honey is probably the strongest note still though, mixed with the vanilla bean. It’s creamy, sweet, and musky, but also very powdery and dry. Overall Impressions: This scent is creamy musky honey and blackberry with a base of vanilla. This is a nice scent, and I could see why some people would go crazy over it, but it smells a bit off to me. I have issues with honey scents, and in this that note is quite powdery. But on someone who likes honey and doesn’t have an issue with blackberry notes smelling of cat pee, this could be downright gorgeous.

    The East

In bottle/imp: Light, sweet flowers and a touch of mint. Immediately on skin: This is a cooler, sweeter floral blend with a bit of mint. The flowers have a nice depth since there’s the different kinds all blending together, and the mint and tea add a very crisp feel to the blend. After a little while: As this dries, it just seems to have faded a lot. I get some very soft floral notes, and a hint of mint with almost a little ozone, but it’s not very strong. There’s also another note that’s come out that’s slightly cloying which I think is the thyme. That’s very light, too. Overall Impressions: This smells very airy and floral, as well as delicate. It didn’t impress me much, especially since no red currant came out on my skin. All I got was light, fresh and sweet flowers, a little tea and mint, and an odd herbal/grainy note as an undertone. It’s pretty, but not for me.

    Wensleydale

In bottle/imp: Very light fresh soap. Immediately on skin: This smells like soap. Like white, creamy, lightly floral scented bar soap. That’s not a bad thing… it’s very refreshing and light and innocent. Or maybe clean clothes just out of the dryer. But mostly, this smells like soap. After a little while: The soapiness fades, but what I’m left with is a very clean, fresh, light scent. It smells like washed skin or clothes straight out of the dryer. It’s very white and fresh, without any ozone or aquatic notes at all. Overall Impressions: If you don’t have time for a shower in the morning, but want to smell clean, this is the perfect scent. It smells like a soapy, clean bath or clothes right out of the dryer. It reminds me of Dirty, but this doesn’t have the sweet, light floral note that Diry does. This is just clean and innocent.

    Stimulating Sassafras Strengthener

In bottle/imp: Woody root beer. Immediately on skin: Wow… root beer! The other reviews weren’t kidding. This isn’t nearly as sweet as the drink though. This is a drier scent with a bit of wood and a slight amount of vanilla in the background. This also has a sharp medicinal twinge to it in the background which I don’t really enjoy. After a little while: The medicinal quality to this really faded within about 20 minutes and left something very intoxicating. This has strong sassafras, but it’s not overly sweet or syrupy. There’s a nice woodiness as well as the vanilla lingering in the background. This is not really a creamy scent, though it does have that element in the background. It’s more woody and dry than creamy. Overall Impressions: This was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t know how I’d feel about this, but it’s quite interesting and dries down to something very lovely. It smells a bit like root beer, but it’s much more complex and deep. This is a drier scent with some woodiness and that lovely vanilla coming in behind. Very different and rather interesting! I don’t know how much I’d wear this, but I can see it as being one of those scents I’ll occasionally get a craving for.

    Slippery Poppy Tincture

In bottle/imp: Very sharp… pine-like flowers and harsh berries. Immediately on skin: This is very… acrid on my skin. Something about the combination of the poppy and acai berry is very sharp to me. It’s a sweet, fruity floral/berry combo and has an overtone that’s almost apple-like. After a little while: This smoothes out a lot as it dries. The poppy gets a bit more floral and the honey comes out a little to blend with the berry. This still has a very apple-like tone to it and a sweet, chilly floral quality. Overall Impressions: This scent is nice, but not something I would wear very often or buy. This is strong on the acai berry, and the poppy comes in behind. The poppy doesn’t smell as… narcotic? Yeah, that’s a good word… not as narcotic as it usually smells on me. It smells a bit more like a traditional floral. The combo of the acai and poppy is very distinct and strong, and very feminine. I get a little honey in this and thank goodness, it doesn’t turn into a powdery mess like a lot of the lab’s honey notes do.

    Bruised Violet Compound

In bottle/imp: Lots of patchouli and a little bit of violets. Immediately on skin: Wow, lots of patchouli… but it’s very smooth and doesn’t smell to gritty. A very light amount of violet is sort of wafting about, and so is a subtle hint of moss. This seems very masculine on me at the moment. After a little while: This has dried down to a very strong patchouli scent (though smooth… not dirty patchouli) with a hint of violets and moss. Very dry and not sweet at all. Overall Impressions: This scent is such a disappointment. I get hardly any violet from it and no currant at all… this is all patchouli with the barest hint of violet and moss. I hope others have better luck with it than I did.

    Violet Ray

In bottle/imp: A thick, sweet mix of violet candies, lilac, and ylang ylang. Immediately on skin: On my skin this smells a little bitter, and very thick. It’s a heavy scent of powdery violets, lilac, and ylang ylang. Oh, and the musk… it’s heavy, dark, and blends well with the ylang ylang. Even though the violet note is relatively sweet in this, the other notes aren’t, so they really overpower the little bit of sweetness the violet lends to this blend. After a little while: This gets deeper and more earthy as I wear it. Not earthy like dirt, but almost like deep smokiness from the ylang ylang. I would definitely say that that’s the main base of this scent on me, and it’s blended with the sandalwood and purple musk while the violet and a light amount of lilac waft above. Overall Impressions: This is a very complex, deep blend. I don’t get any mint from this, and the ylang ylang and purple musk really weigh this down. The violet and lilac are very pretty, but can’t compete with the ylang ylang. This is almost smoky, but very smooth, and has the lilting sweetness of the powdery violets. It’s sort of bitter on me, so I really think this blend just went a bit wrong on my skin.

    Phoenix Steamworks

In bottle/imp: This actually does smell like bright, shiny metal and a bit of dry sage. Immediately on skin: This is bright and golden, in a crisp but smooth and cologne-y sort of way. The gold and oil notes smell like light citrus and warm metal, while the sage lends an herbal tone to the blend. I don’t really get any incense in this. After a little while: The citrus (or maybe it’s very crisp ozone) has gotten even louder in this, and blends with the warm metal and sage to create a scent that is warm, clean, slightly herbal, and metallic. Overall Impressions: This scent is really unique. On me it’s unisex edging into masculine, but I could see how a woman could rock this. It’s a strong scent, with nice warm metallic notes, sage, and a very bright ozone/lemon note. This just smells bright and shiny, with a nice depth to it. Very nice, though personally it’s just not something I would wear.

    No. 93 Engine

In bottle/imp: Herbs, lemon, and spices. Immediately on skin: This is an interesting mix of deep resins, herbs, lemon, and warm beeswax and saffron. It’s a balanced scent, with notes hitting all ends of the spectrum: the lemon balm is rather high, while the saffron gives this a grounded feel and the resins and herbs flit around in the middle. The balm of Gilead is very obvious in this, and gives it a dried, warm flowers type of overall feel. After a little while: Something in this is starting to turn my stomach a little. I think it’s the combination of the balm of Gilead plus the beeswax and saffron (and maybe some of the other notes… I don’t know what half of them even smell like). Anyway, this smells oddly dry, slightly sharp, and creamy at the same time. Overall Impressions: This has a lot going on; it’s a very complex scent. It’s very resinous, warm, and herbal with that odd craft store note that the balm of Gilead lends to this. There’s just a hint of the lemon balm upon drydown, but it blends unusually with the other notes and the combo of everything just doesn’t smell right to my nose. I’m sure this will be magic on others though.
  21. Delirium1009

    Ether

In bottle/imp: Clean, crisp white florals and a bit of ozone. Immediately on skin: This is a very clean, crisp floral scent. It’s slightly sweet, but in a very fresh way as opposed to being heavy or cloying. There’s also a bit of ozone in this, almost citrus-like. I think I also smell a hint of something like a touch of pine, but it’s far off and faint. After a little while: This doesn’t change much on me as I wear it. I think the ozone and citrus (there definitely seems to be lemon in this) get a little stronger, and the white florals fade to the background, but it’s still a very crisp, pretty scent. I don’t know what davana smells like, but the flowers in this smell light and sweet with a very airy quality about them. Overall Impressions: I was expecting this to be a little more floral, and perhaps have more depth, but the airy, crisp floral scent it actually is is quite nice. There’s a bit of ozone and lemon to this, but the flowers balance it nicely and this isn’t too sweet or too sharp.
  22. Delirium1009

    Aelopile

In bottle/imp: Warm, glowing cedar and citrus. Immediately on skin: This is a strong citrus and cedar combo… very complex with hints of lemon, possibly lime, and strong verbena with the cedar blending in. The combination reminds me of anise almost, and is so sharp it almost makes my nose burn a little. It’s a very high, shrieking scent right now. The amber is there, but very subtle. It brings the scent down and grounds it just a tad, and blends nicely with the cedar. After a little while: This morphs into a golden amber and cedar scent with a hint of citrus. This just feels very warm and dry. It’s not a sweet scent, and has a very grounded quality to it now. The citrus (lemon, I think) adds just a touch of airiness to the blend. Overall Impressions: This is a great blend for those who like cedar, or people who don’t mind it and may like warm, woody scents. The lemon adds a little sweetness and lightness to this, but mostly this is very woody, golden, and dry. This is definitely unisex, and seems like a nice cozy scent.

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

I see that blend for sale on a lot of Sales pages usually, so I don't think it's too hard to find. I didn't like the blend, but I found the milk in Obatala was very similar to that note in MM 07. If I remember correctly, there were also grapes and tropical fruits in there... I'm not sure what you could use to mix with Obatala to add those notes (I generally stay away from grapey or pineappley scents).
  24. Delirium1009

    Maiden

In bottle/imp: Strong floral tea. I can smell the carnation and rose strongly. Immediately on skin: The carnation is the strongest note on my skin at first. It’s sharp, fresh, and slightly spicy. The tea lends a freshness to this, and the rose comes in behind. All three notes are present, but they’re not blending together yet. After a few minutes: This scent settles into a nice carnation and rose tea scent. I know that’s what the description says, but it is blending together much better after a little bit on my skin. The carnation and tea create a fresh, light floral concoction, and the rose adds a touch of creamy sweetness. Overall Impressions: This is a wonderful fresh carnation scent. It’s very pretty and feminine, and also very fresh and light. The carnation is the strongest note, but after a few minutes it blends nicely with the white tea and rose.
  25. Delirium1009

    Lucy's Kiss

In bottle/imp: Refreshing, fresh rose with a nice fruitiness to it. Immediately on skin: This is a very sweet, fresh rose scent with the smallest hint of spices. The rose is almost lemony and is slightly bitter and not as sweet now that it’s on my skin. After a little while: This has dried down to a nice fresh rose scent, with maybe a hint of sandalwood in the background. If there are spices, they’re very light and hardly noticeable. Overall Impressions: I get a very pretty rose from this, and it’s not as sharp as in other blends, but I don’t really get much spice. Maybe a hint of sandalwood on the dry down, but that’s it. It’s a very pretty rose scent, but that’s about it on my skin.
