    Psyche

In bottle/imp: Dry lavender, musk, and a touch of rose. Immediately on skin: This smells mostly of dry, unsweetened lavender. It’s so herbal that it’s almost peppery. The white musk blends in, and a touch of the rose. Underneath everything is the tiniest breath of sweet orchid. After a little while: This has softened into something totally different. It’s so soft now: a mix of delicate white musk, smooth rose and a bit of orchid. It’s very faint and I don’t get any lavender from this any longer. Overall Impressions: This is so different when it’s wet and when it’s sat on my skin for a little while. I think at first it’s way too dry and herbal, but when it dries it’s very faint. The drydown makes me think of a nice rose soap that has a couple of other faint notes put in, but the rose is still the most identifiable note. This is nice, but fleeting.

    Perversion

In bottle/imp: Smoky and sweet smooth leather. Immediately on skin: This is surprisingly nice on me… at least so far * knock on wood * This is a sweet, smoky, creamy and slightly boozy leather scent. The leather is not overly strong or masculine though. It’s a very thick scent though so I hope it lightens up a bit on my skin. After a little while: This is a creamy, smoky, and subtly sweet tonka and leather scent on my skin. I’m very surprised at how well the tonka and leather notes blend together… it’s really nice. This blend doesn’t really have “levels” to it; everything seems to be mixing to create a very interesting, unique singular scent. Overall Impressions: This was quite a surprise, but I really love it. It’s so naughty and sexy, and blended gorgeously. I’d say this could probably be a man’s scent as well as a woman since the leather strikes me as more masculine, but the sweetness is a little playful to me. I definitely love this scent… I just hope it’s one that’ll get some wear!

    O

In bottle/imp: Faint cocoa powder (?) and honey. Immediately on skin: I will start this review off by saying that I’ve learned that the lab’s mainly honey blends don’t work on me and some of the lab’s vanilla turns to plastic on my skin. That said, this is a smooth but powdery plastic scent on me with some interesting sweet warmth. This smells of honey powder over plastic doll heads (you know… the ones that are supposed to smell of vanilla or something?) and an undertone of pretty ok amber. So not good right now… After a little while: Ew. Ew. Ew. This is so powdery and plastic-y on my skin. It has a very cool, caked vanilla baby powder scent that I can’t get over. Yuck. Overall Impressions: This is my second time trying O, and it’s still a disaster on me. It goes powdery and turns to plastic on my skin. Not for me.

    Nefertiti

In bottle/imp: Lightly, delicately floral with dry (but not bitter) herbs and wafting resins. Immediately on skin: This is a lightly spicy sandalwood scent with soft resins and an airy, light touch of iris. It has a note that is making it feel a little sharp, but overall the blend is smooth and well blended. It’s almost musky, but I think that’s just the sandalwood, which is very deep in this blend. After a little while: The iris in this has bloomed on my skin, and the olibanum has come out a bit more. This is a resinous iris scent with a nice dose of sandalwood. It’s lightly fresh and floral, resinous, and a bit warm and spicy all at the same time. The herbs are just lightly there, a breath of them like the description says. Overall Impressions: This is a very pretty scent. The iris really freshens up this blend of frankincense, sandalwood, and myrrh with the trailing scent of light herbs. This isn’t overly sweet or heavy, and manages to be warm and floral at the same time.

    Muse

In bottle/imp: Lime! And some smoky florals in the background. Immediately on skin: This is a very complex mix of lime and the floral notes in the description. The lime is more of note I feel than one I smell now that this is on my skin, but it gives the whole blend a brighter feel. Mostly this consists of smoky jasmine, lotus, and tuberose. The jasmine is heavy, but the lotus and tuberose make it a little sweeter. The lime is a very tart note. After a little while: The lotus in this has faded and what I’m left with is a surprisingly pretty (the lab’s jasmine is usually very heavy and smoky on me) blend of jasmine, tuberose, and a nice dose of lime giving this a much fresher feel. It’s not overly sweet, but it is a fresher floral scent. Overall Impressions: The jasmine in this is the heaviest note, but the distinctive scents of the tuberose and lotus try their best to blend in as well. The lotus seems to fade after a while, but the resulting jasmine and tuberose scent with the lime blended over it seems quite pretty and wearable. Jasmine isn’t really a “me” note, but if you like it and are looking for something a bit fresher but still floral, I’d suggest trying this one.

The Maltese Cross of Sanctus Germanus

Golden amber, blood orange, ambergris, lilac, frankincense, and agarwood. In bottle/imp: Orangey, clean and herbal, with a salty kick from the ambergris. Immediately on skin: This isn’t really a warm amber scent… It’s more like salty and slightly creamy ambergris with the powderiness of the amber and a hint of flowery lilac. There’s a hint of resin too, but it’s blended well into the other notes. After a little while: The golden amber seems to be coming out a bit more now and is taking control of the blend from the ambergris, though that saltiness is still evident. However, this has more of a warm, powdery amber feel now with the ambergris blending into that a bit. There’s a nice hint of lilac giving this a slightly cooler undertone, and the frankincense adding almost a richness to the background of the scent. But this is definitely a more powdery scent. Overall Impressions: This scent isn’t anything fabulous on me, unfortunately. I really love the golden amber note, but it stays quiet for perhaps the first 20 minutes or so. And I’m also not a big fan of ambergris and that comes out quite a bit in this blend. I’d imagine this will be fabulous on the right person though, and I have to admit that the combination of golden amber and ambergris is really interesting.

    Licwiglunga

In bottle/imp: Very herbal and sharp with an undercurrent of bright fruitiness and anise. Immediately on skin: This smells like a mixture of sharp and almost pine-like herbs, pomegranate, and anise. I can sense the lavender, but there’s an herbal scent that’s even sharper and drier. It’s odd, and more sharp than sweet. For some reason, the combination of notes in this strikes me as the smell of body odor. After a little while: The pomegranate comes out a bit more now, followed by something very dry and herbal. The anise is still pretty evident and I continue to get that weird BO feel from this. Overall Impressions: This is an interesting combination of dry paper, herbs, pomegranate, and anise, but something here blending together reminds me strongly of the scent of sweat or body odor. It seemed so neat from the notes, but my chemistry does not go well with this blend.

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils

I never liked Mme Moriarty on me, but my husband really liked it (it smelled fabulous on him), but then after a few wears he started getting welts where he would apply it. I have no idea what it was that affected him like that, but I don't think any other oil has caused a reaction on him.

    Quirkiest, most bizarre oils

I think some of the most bizarre and interesting oils I've tried have been Death Cap, Black Opal, and Nosferatu. Perversion is very interesting too... it has interesting notes that just work SO well together.

What do bottles and labels look like?

It sounds like one of the Pumpkin Patch blends. Here's #4 from 2007. I think there was a Pumpkin Patch set of 5 different blends put out in 2006, but they didn't have the numbers on the labels. So that may be what you have. ETA: Here's one of the labels from the 2006 Pumpkin Patch. If it's in that style, it's one of the blends from that year, I'd say.

    Theodosius, The Legerdemain

In bottle/imp: Very light men’s cologne and white musk with a hint of creaminess. Immediately on skin: This smells like soft gentlemen’s cologne with an extra dash of dry white musk and a very faint vanilla note. Whereas Dorian is all about the tea and vanilla with a hint of lavender cologne, this is more like cologne with a hint of bergamot tea and vanilla. After a little while: This blend smells very dry to me and almost woody. The cologne is still the main note with the white musk blending in, and there’s just a hint of sweet creamy tea in the background. Overall Impressions: This blend reminds me a lot of Dorian, but in a manner of opposites. Whereas I just get sweet, creamy vanilla tea and a hint of lavender cologne from Dorian, Theodosius is more like dry, gentlemanly cologne with the tea and vanilla far in the background. This has an odd dry feel to it on me though… almost like paper or dusty linen. I love Dorian on myself, but I may have my husband try this one.

    Stormclouds Over The Midway

In bottle/imp: Strong incense and ozone. Immediately on skin: I can feel this scent in the back of my throat… it’s so thick and electric. Mostly this smells of ozone and incense, but there’s also a medicinal twinge to this and a hint of opium. Mainly this is just soapy ozone and incense though. After a little while: This loses its thick edge after a while. It settles down into a soapy ozone incense scent with a hint of opium. It smells dry and powdery, but also clean from that ozone note. Overall Impressions: This is an interesting scent to experience, but I don’t think I’d wear it. This is a more unisex scent with a very smoky incense and clean ozone type of feel, and it doesn’t have much sweetness or perfumey-ness at all. This is dry and soapy, but definitely brings dark rolling stormclouds to mind. If there’s any wormwood in this, I can’t identify this (I’ve never really smelled that note before) and it blends into the other notes enough not to stand out on its own.

    Pickled Imp

In bottle/imp: Thick cinnamon and clove with a creaminess to it. Immediately on skin: This is one of the first bpal blends where the clove actually smells like clove on me! This smells like vanilla pudding with lots of clove and a little cinnamon sprinkled over the top. After a little while: As I wear this, it gets creamier and yummier smelling. The vanilla comes out more and blends with the clove to create a sweet and spicy foodie concoction. The cinnamon is very light in this, but I can just smell it. Overall Impressions: I am so loving this. CLOVE!! That smells like clove!! This is like rich vanilla pudding sprinkled with the spice, and I adore it. It’s foodie, but not overly so. But it’s very rich and will be fabulous for cooler weather wear.
  14. Delirium1009

    Parthenope

In bottle/imp: Jasmine. Just lots of smoky, strong jasmine. Immediately on skin: This is very soapy on me, with lots of jasmine and touches of violet/orris. It’s a cooler, slightly aquatic soapy scent. After a little while: Hmmm… hasn’t changed much, except that soapiness is gone. This is still primarily jasmine with a hint of orris. The aquatic feel has receded. Overall Impressions: This wasn’t impressive on me, unfortunately. The jasmine definitely ate all the rest of the notes, except for a little of the orris. So this is mostly jasmine with a little violet thrown in. Pretty, but not really memorable on my skin.

    Marcilla

In bottle/imp: Warm, glowing musk and beeswax with sweet florals. Immediately on skin: This has a very interesting warm/cool thing going on. The nectarine, green tea and florals make up the cooler notes, and they’re fresh without being too sweet. Adding a bit of warmth and sweetness are the golden musk and the beeswax, which gives this an almost honeyed feel. After a little while: I can barely smell this any more. Putting my nose all the way up to my hand all I get is the barest hint of warm musk mixed with sweet, cool florals and a little beeswax. The green tea is wafting around a little too. This smells warm and sweet with that lingering cool feel over the top, but I can barely smell it. Overall Impressions: This is one of those blends that sit VERY close to the skin. It has a nice warm/cool feel going on, with the musk and beeswax balanced against the green tea, lilac, and lily of the valley. It’s subtly sweet but slightly tangy and warm. This is pretty and very feminine.

    L'Heure Verte

In bottle/imp: Light fruitiness and bright rose with an undercurrant of smoke. Immediately on skin: This scent sits in a blind spot for me a little; I can barely smell it. When I do get whiffs, it’s mostly rose with a touch of lilac and something faintly alcoholic with a bit of bitter smoke underneath. But mostly, I get rose and lilac. After a little while: Mostly this is rose (watered down, sweeter rose) with hints of lilac and a little opium smoke. It has a subtle sweetness that might be the sugar cubes, but I don’t think I actually smell any absinthe. Overall Impressions: This scent didn’t do much for me… it’s very light and not as impressive as I was hoping. All I got was a bit of rose with a little lilac and opium smoke. I hope others have more luck with it.

    The Illustrated Woman

In bottle/imp: Very medicinal pine with a musky, warm, sweet undertone. Immediately on skin: Pine is one of those notes that stand out to me a lot, since I really don’t like it. This blend on my skin is mostly pine, but it has a nice amount of musk and sweet warmth in the background. It’s sharp with a smooth finish. After a little while: The pine stays pretty present in this, but the other notes really come out and blend with it. After just a few minutes and now on my skin this is a very musky, creamy, and slightly sweet pine scent. It’s very warm and has a feel almost like coconut. The vanilla, skin musk, resins, and honey really blend nicely into the pine, while the tobacco kind of smooths over everything. Overall Impressions: This is a gorgeous pine scent, and has a LOT going on. It’s warm, musky, and creamy and you can smell each and every note, BUT at the same time, it all blends together seamlessly to create this really unique scent. I don’t like pine, so I wouldn’t wear this, but I can see this being a huge favorite.

    Gwyneth

In bottle/imp: Very strong rose and lily, but mostly lily. Immediately on skin: This is strong, assertive, soapy lily with a little rose. There are hints of a little bit of the musk and coconut, but they’re far in the background of this scent After a little while: The rose seems to come forward a bit more and blends into the lily. This is very perfumey and feminine with the skin musk and coconut barely peeking through. But now there’s also a bit of sage, and it blends in very nicely with the perfumey rose and lily. Overall Impressions: This blend didn’t have nearly as much complexity on my skin as I was expecting from the notes. It’s mostly lily on me, then lily and rose. The other notes barely peek through, but I can lightly smell the skin musk, coconut, and then Spanish sage in the drydown. This is pretty, but not memorable on me.

    Dionysia

In bottle/imp: Woody, sweet earthiness with a hint of red fruits. Immediately on skin: This is a very low scent to me. The majority of this scent is very earthy and smooth with hints of patchouli and wood, but I think the main scent in this is benzoin, which I’m not so great at describing. It sort of smells thick and oily, but earthy and woody at the same time. Blending into that are light amounts of fruit. The strongest is the pomegranate, but the plum is there as well. The fruit scents sort of sit above the earthy scent, but don’t blend in much. After a little while: Wow, the fruit really blooms in this after just a few minutes! This morphs into a bright pomegranate, plum, and raspberry scent with hints of light plum blossom and a bit of dry dirt and wood. Overall Impressions: This starts out sort of odd on my skin, but it blooms beautifully into lots of tart fruitiness. This blend has a very nice complexity going on with the plum blossom, patchouli, and mahogany lurking behind the fruit notes. Overall, I think this is a gorgeous scent and is complex enough to make in not just another fruity blend. I love smelling it, but I’ll have to see if it’s something I’d actually wear, too.

    Clémence

In bottle/imp: Spiced black tea infused with carnations. Immediately on skin: Cola. Aka, patchouli plus spices, at least on me. This scent is complex with the spices (mostly cardamom), tea, carnation and patchouli all coming through but combined they smell a lot like cola syrup to my nose. After a little while: This just gets sweeter and thicker as I wear it. It’s still very reminiscent of cola syrup to me. The patchouli, tea and spices are blending very nicely together though, and the carnation gives it a nice peppery floral top note. This is just nicely earthy and spicy with crisp black tea and carnation. Overall Impressions: This was a disappointment, as I don’t enjoy the smell of cola. A few of the lab’s earthy plus spicy blends turn out that way on me though (I’m looking at you Leo 07!) so I’m not surprised the same thing happens here. I’m sure it translates differently on others though.
  21. Delirium1009

    The Blood Garden

In bottle/imp: Dusty and tangy grapes, spices, and blackberry. Immediately on skin: This scent manages to be dry and bitter and tart and fruity at the same time. It’s odd. I can smell the slightly metallic blood accord and the bitter clove sprinkled over the top, a touch of leather, and the grape, currant, and blackberry. They combine to make this very weird bitter, gritty, fruity combo though. After a little while: When I smell this, it makes my nose tickle like I’m going to sneeze. It smells bitter and metallic now (like I’d imagine dried blood would smell) with a backdrop of grapes, currants, and a very sharp, soapy floral (that note is light however). Overall Impressions: This scent is very intense and deep, with a lot going on. It’s definitely a blood scent, and it smells like a deep purplish burgundy color. The other notes make it a little bitter and very fruity, which adds to the blend’s complexity. This is definitely a sexy feminine vampire type of scent.
  22. Delirium1009

    Agrat-Bat-Mahlaht

In bottle/imp: Salty, musky caramel. Immediately on skin: This is very much a salty caramel dominated scent. But there’s other things going on too like a touch of florals from the apple blossom and a perfumey note from the teak. Honestly, this reminds me of being in a Yankee Candle store and leaning in to smell one of the caramel scented jar candles, but still being able to smell the other stuff all around me. There’s a lot going on and it doesn’t seem well blended. After a little while: Something in this smells nutty to me, and it’s bugging me. It’s sort of the same note I get in Gingerbread Poppet, Bloody Mary, and Pumpkin Cheesecake… and I don’t like it. This has settled into a nutty, salty caramel scent with a slight creaminess and a hint of perfume and musk lurking about. Overall Impressions: This scent really didn’t do anything for me… the caramel is odd on my skin and this develops a weird nuttiness. It’s slightly perfume-y, but it doesn’t mesh with the rest of the scent for me. This was definitely made to suit someone else’s skin chemistry.
  23. Delirium1009

    Aeronwen

In bottle/imp: Strong black musk with spices and a finish of very sweet orange. Immediately on skin: This is a potent scent. It just about smacks me as I smell it. The main note is the black musk… it’s strong and solid. Blending into that I get a touch of redwood and dry spices. There’s a hint of the fig, and it acts almost to smooth the rest of the blend. This is rather dry smelling and almost herbal. After a little while: This changes a lot on my skin. It turns into this perfume-y spiced black musk scent with this bright overtone of what seems to be the mixture of orange, amber and fig. This is one of those scents where everything just melds and creates a scent all its own. Overall Impressions: I know it’s always said to try bpal on your skin before you judge the scent, and this blend is a perfect example of that. It’s so different in the imp and after I wear it for just a few minutes. This is a deeper, spiced black musk scent, but it has a gorgeous flowing overtone to it that really delivers. This scent has great throw, too. It’s strong and assertive, but deep and sexy as well.

    Carnations

I love carnations! Bathsheba is nice, but it's a very close skin-scent on me. If you like plum, I think you should try it as the amount of plum on me is equal to the amount of the carnation in the scent. Zarita, on me, is a creamy, girly, perfumey carnation scent. It's very fragrant and lasts for HOURS. I definitely recommend Pink Moon 07 and Hod too

My favorite aquatic is Selkie... it's a salty aquatic floral. Absolutely refreshing and uplifting and my first bpal love!
