  1. I know there's another salty thread, but my salty is different:

I adore the scent of the air/glass when beakers that have been filled with salt water start to evaporate...this might be actually "burning" salt.

Does anyone know of anything that smells at all like this? (It's not an aquatic scent, at all.)

    Thanks!

The only thing I can think of is looking into the scents that say they have a metallic note. The scent you're describing is kinda like oxidized salt water? I think there must be one of the metallics that fits......

  2. There's no way it's the Lab--they're selling "Embalming Fluid" nailpolish as "the Lab" and not Trading Post. And BPAL is so proud of who they are, and there's nothing of that here. This is so creepy. As was this feedback comment: ""brilliant. so glad i can get bpal products sent to the uk through amazon as they do not deliver here otherwise"

Date: 8/9/2008 Rated by Buyer: sexymackeral "

SINCE WHEN? Isn't that news to all of the UK fans here who regularly get BPAL shipments?!?

Damn it! I was so worried about it being a fake. So the question remains, how are they making any money (it's sold at the same prices), and how are they getting the product? I suppose they could be making cheap imitations, which just fills me with another level of malice.

Once we get a definitive answer about this from a labbie or someone, then I say we all go there and post reviews warning people away! It makes me so mad when people take advantage of wonderful people like Beth and Ted. :P

  3. I searched for BPAL and found 42 items, from GC scents, to stuff from BPTP and other items. What makes me think it's not the lab is that there's a generic photo of a bunch of Snakes from CD for every GC scent that's offered. I doubt Black Phoenix would make that mistake if they were to strike a deal with Amazon (which seems unlikely). My guess is that it's someone else posing as the lab. :P

Yeah, there's generic information about the lab taken directly from the "About the Lab" page on the main site too. But if it isn't the lab, how are they getting product to the buyers???? I'm almost hoping it is the lab, because I'd hate to see someone masquerade as them like this!!!

  4. So my friend went to amazon.com and punched in "bpal" and got a bunch of hits. It says they are made by and shipped from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab......but I'm confused, I've been into bpal for over a year now and never once heard that it could be purchased through Amazon.

So, my questions are, is this really the lab? is it some illegal vendor? if it is the lab, do shipping times vary? and a load of other questions like that.......

I'm all for sharing the madness, but I'm suddenly very scared that I'm gonna start smelling Snake Oil everywhere I go.

ETA: I really did search for this on the forum, so if I'm repeating a previous thread please forgive me.

  5. In real life I have a slight juniper allergy, but not when it's in an oil.

However, I also am allergic to certain tropical and exotic fruits (mango, papaya, kumquat, persimmon, yuzu) and that seemed to carry over to the perfume world too.

The first and only time I've tested this was when I tried Tweedledee (kumquat) and as a result swelled up like a balloon in my face and throat. I'm not keen on trying any of the others, but then I don't feel like I'm missing out on much, since I don't like them in real life anyway.

My ex-husband had a more severe juniper allergy which made me avoid juniper altogether. But now I can wear it to my hearts content, MMMMM Loup.

  6. I've tried most of the leather scents BPAL has because I'm obsessed with their leather note. Here were my findings:

    Favorites

Wanda - the blend of wine and leather is perfect, and I could wear nothing but this for the rest of my life

Krampus - very sexy, masculine, and smells just like my boyfirend, needless to say, I really love this blend

De Sade - a wonderful true leather smell, more like shiny new leather than well-worn or dusty leather

Western Diamondback - wonderfully musky leather, and oddly a very dusty leather like a well-used coyboy saddle (and the cowboy :P )

Crowley - love this blend, the leather adds just the right amount of bad boy to a blend that would otherwise be all charm, this is a sexy and dangerous man!

Dee - very nice masculine blend, smells like every male librarian should, leather and paper, my two favorite lab notes!

    Others

Perversion - this used to be a favortie of mine, but now I find it cloyingly sweet, also I can't find the leather in it

Hand of Glory - this one is interesting, it really smells like a waxed over hand burning, which is rather disturbing, I keep it because I love the pure candle wax smell

Casanova - very cologney, but nice also, the leather in this blends really well with the other notes, in fact it's hard to pick out any of the notes besides the anise

Loviatar - I like the leather in this, but there's something about it that just creeps me out, don't know why, I really prefer Wanda

The Black Tower - I really get only a bit of leather from this, mostly it's wine and smoke for me, I still like it though

Tezcatlipoca - the leather in this is a great counterpoint to the cocoa, the rest of the notes I could do without, I keep this for the leather + cocoa

Les Infortunes De La Vertu - this is a very interesting blend that immediately gives me the visual of crisp clean white bedlinens, with a splattering of fresh blood across them, while that's very interesting, I couldn't wear it 'cause it kinda scared me

Whip - I don't like the way the rose and leather play together, it may just be my skin because it smells good on other people

Severin - the bergamot is really the front runner in this blend, then the leather, and the combination is.....bright......that's the only way I can think to describe it, an artificial brightness

A Bachelor's Dog - I admit I got this one for the tobacco (another favorite note) and the tobacco really is the most dominant note, nice blend though, very masculine

  7. HALP PLZ!

I have a bottle of L'Occitane Feu d'Orange which I think is total love, but it doesn't last two seconds on my skin. I want a BPAL equivalent!

Ideally, something predominently orange and amber would just make my day, but the catalogue seems to be pretty short of that combo. So, any suggestions of scents or scent combos to try would be much appreciated!

(For the record, Feu d'Orange is an orange topnote with middle/basenotes of woods and amber. It's very gender-neutral.)

I was going to search the site, but it seems to be broken. I will update once the search function is active again.

Barring that I can recommend The Great Sword of War, very gender-neutral orange(mandarin actually) that blends really well with the musk and herbs, etc...

  8. Here's what I found.

Acapella Eau de Toilette: This is Mary Kay's classic fragrance, it has an elegant scent that is a perfectly balanced by jasmine, rose, lilac and lily of the valley!

    I recommend

Dragon's Eye - A piercing, radiant perfume: dragon's blood resin, lily of the valley, lilac and galbanum.

Endymion - A sweet, wistful blend of d'Anjou pear, Lily of the Valley, bois du rose and white musk.

Suspiro - Ylang ylang with white plum, white orchid, jasmine, calla lily and lily of the valley.

Hymn - Perfect rose absolute and Palestinian Lily of the Valley with olibanum, labdanum, frankincense and myrrh.

Moscow - Imperial rose, carnation, lush jasmine, lily of the valley, dark musk, amber, bergamot and gilded tangerine.

Mata Hari - Five roses with soft jasmine, warmed by vanilla, fig, tonka bean and mahogany, spiced with a drop of coffee bean.

Wicked - A sophisticated, womanly scent: rich myrrh and jasmine draped in the subtlest rose.

Nuit - Dazzling white musks, white rose and night-blooming jasmine with the soft moss of moonlit meadows, a waft of Egyptian incense, and a gentle breath of moonflower.

Queen Mab - Black orchid, sandalwood, night-blooming jasmine, osmanthus, Somalian rose, and Chinese musk.

Delight - Frangipani, with rose, tuberose, and jasmine.

Black Dahlia - Voluptuous magnolias strewn over orchid, star jasmine, black amber and smoky rose.

  9. The Deep Ones is definitely a salty aquatic. I usually can't stand aquatics unless they are very salty and The Deep Ones fits the bill.

If you like salty scents then you may want to go for Kostnice as well. I've heard Olokun fits into the salty aquatic also, but I haven't tried it yet.

  10. I went as Little Red Riding Hood to a party on Friday, but tonight it is going to be turned ionto Little DEAD Riding Hood. :P

I ended up going with Black Forest on Friday. I haven't decided if I should do the same tonight.

I'm Little Red Riding Hood as well, and wanted to go for a Little Red after she kills the wolf, but the faux fur didn't get here in time. I'm wearing Al-Shairan because it smells like home-baked goodies!

  11. I'm still on the hunt for the ultimate boy magnet without red musk or patchouli. Now there's a conundrum :P

Clove is supposed to be a boy magnet too.

I remember reading that study that mentioned pumpkin... but I think it was pumpkin pie, not just the big orange squash-relative itself. The spices in a pumpkin pie are cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice... and I think I've heard independently of cloves and cinnamon having aphrodisiac properties.

For myself, I'm looking for the ultimate peach. I've noticed a few BPAL blends that have a bit of peach, but it never seems to be described as a primary note. My favourite scent to wear up until now has been an old bottle of Fuzzy Peach eau de toilette from the Body Shop. It's just pure, single-note peach. I'd love to find something that has a lot of peach but also other things to make it more complex.

I'm still a BPAL virgin. :D I've ordered some stuff but it isn't here yet. I think a couple of the imps I'm getting have pear (like Titania) and plum (can't remember which, might have been Bordello).

I love Al-shairan, but the peach plays a duet with spices in that one. If you can't find straight peach, perhaps you should try March Hare, it's apricot, straight sticky sweet juicy apricot.

  12. Just to clarify...have you tried any of the scents that are specifically library/book-themed, e.g., Dee, Aziraphale, The Lurid Library? I realize that Dee has leather as a note, but I also find that it's one of those strong, long-lasting scents that holds up well against various environmental conditions. And Aziraphale is very clean, especially in the early stages, if that's what you're looking for.

Another thematically-appropriate GC would be Clio: it's got amber, but the orange-lavender combination definitely makes it clean and fresh.

I work in a library as well, and wear all of these regularly. Eshe is another to add to this set, as it has a dusty almost papery note in it. Odin also gives me that same feel, and is nice and unisex. I think of all those mentioned here, I wear Dee, Aziraphale, and Clio the most though.

  13. A quick search turned up this:

    Wild African Rose Bar Soap

Coconut oil, Palm Oil, Castor Oil, Safflower Oil, Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Jojoba Ester, Shea Butter, Purified Water, Sorbitol (from berries),Sorbitan Oleate (from vegetable oil), Soybean Protein, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Rose Essential Oil, Natural Color (B-Carotene). (May Contain Whole Flower Petals and Herbs.)

In other words it looks like they just use plain ole rose essential oil. I'd go for the purest rose scent you can. Zombie (all rose on me, but I tend to amp it), Whip, Persephone, Harlot, or Two, Five & Seven, perhaps?
