Lines Written Among the Euganean Hills

Wet: This reminds me of Ice Princess bath oil right away (not a bad thing!). Frozen fruit, hints of woods and mint. Absolutely lovely. So wintry and pretty. I don't always love mint, but this is perfect. I don't always love woods, but again - perfect. Ditto with fruit. This all just works, and I can for sure see wearing it on a winter hike. Dry: This is really lovely. It's cold and wintry, but also bright. I can see if being a great "transition scent" into cold spring days as well. I will happily wear this while I traipse through the woods.

    Nine Ladies Dancing Hair Gloss

Eight Maids-A-Milking Seven Swans-A-Swimming Six Geese-A-Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree A billow of lime cotton candy, a dribble of absinthe, a few scattered sugar plums, and one squished fig. This sounded far too fun to pass up, and it is!! All the notes are totally identifiable. Yummy sweet-tart lime (which is the star in this), sweet fruity sugar plums, a dash of absinthe and just a hint of sticky fig. This is a candy lover's dream. If you like lime, you should try this, this is the best lime candy note I have ever smelled. I have no idea if I will ever find occasion to wear this, but it makes me grin from ear to ear and I will be holding onto my little 5ml for times when I feel silly and whimsical.

    Ella Hair Gloss

Not a dog, not a hound, but a 100% genuine cur: Brian's crazy swamp girl, the Blueberry Catahoula Hog Dog! Louisiana's olive blossom and magnolia swirled with blueberries. The second I sprayed this there was a blast of something weeeeiiird, but that disappeared immediately and left sun warmed blueberries and an unfamiliar floral that smells somewhat exotic, and must be the olive blossom? The blueberry is prominent though. It smells squished. In a good way. Occasionally though, I am now catching hints of that weird smells again. It's something akin to when jasmine goes funky and smells like an outhouse. The blueberry is sadly fading quickly on me, and I am not really enjoying the scent that's left. It's nice, with a really off-putting note underneath, like using pretty air freshener to mask the smell of and rotting. It's disquieting. It does not smell that way in the bottle at all, and I am sure this is just me. I will try it again on another day, because I love the idea of a blueberry scent. ETA: So I test HG on the sleeve of my shirt, it's easiest for me. The next day, the shirt I sprayed this on smells LOVELY. This settles into a gorgeous, juicy, heady magnolia and blueberry scent. Lovely. I think it was the olive blossom that smelled funky to me, and it faded out.

    2017: Crystal Phoenix

In my head, this was going to be like a mix of Banshee Beat and Antikythera. I realize reality will likely be much different, patchouli and I struggle to get along.... Wet: Oh wow. I actually wasn't that far off! This is a sexy, slightly gnarly patch. And the tobacco and woods do remind me of Antikythera, especially with the sweet vanilla. This is good! A little grittier than I would like, but that may round out with age. Dry: Nada - it disappeared. I will be aging this and trying again. Sadly, I have struck out with pretty much all the Phoenixes (and I have tried almost all of them). Only Paper and Salt have really worked on me.

    2007: Wood Phoenix

Wet: Oh this is so interesting! Lots of Dorian at first, then the wine comes through, then the apple really amps up. I have never tried Snow Glass Apples, because I don't love apple, but this is like an apple incense, and it's lovely. It's sexy, actually. I get the whole sexy vampire apples thing now. Opium, maybe? I dunno, something is dirtying (in a good way!) this up. Dry: This turns into a very clean, fruity scent, only remotely related to what it was like when wet. I don't know what to think. I may age it and try it again, see if that brings the Snake Oil and Dorian combo out more. Currently it's mostly apple.

    2014: Silk Phoenix

Wet: LOTS of really strong new-smelling leather. It's the type that often smells of disgusting chemicals on me, but is actually behaving itself here, which is nice. I testing Leather Phoenix on my other arm, and I feel this would have been more suited to that name, it's got so much leather! Metal is also a note that is usually horrific on me, but it's just the tiniest bit here, and hasn't amped up (yet) to kill the whole thing on me. I am actually really appreciating this for how evocative it is. I don't know why, but this scent makes the show Firefly come to mind. Weird, right? The hints of spice and smoke are amazing. This would smell BAD ASS on a dude. Or a woman more capable of being badass than I am...lol. Dry: This is a very rugged smelling leather scent. It's really nice, and I am not even a huge leather fan. Leather lovers should not miss this one - it will age like a dream. Kinda makes me want to be a cowboy....

    2005: Leather Phoenix

Wet: Chocolate and gin. Yum! The gin was super strong at first and I thought it was going to be dominant, but the chocolate is actually winning. But barely, and each time I sniff something different is coming out on top. For something called Leather Phoenix - I actually don't smell any leather. Dry: Dry this is all about the gin. It's sweet, but I can no longer identify the chocolate. It's a really nice scent. I don't know if I would wear it, but if you want to smell like gin, this is an awesome option. Just as a side note - it lacks the effervescence of other gin blends I have tried.

    Cushing Manor

Mod Note: Limited release perfume oil; atmosphere spray review topic located here. A stately brick mansion glowing with warmth: bay rum, fine whiskey, white carnations, and hearth wood. Really excited to be trying this! I have been eying the Atmo since it came out, so I jumped on the chance to snag it as an "Atmofume" Wet: Sweet and boozy, with lots of spicy carnation to balance the sweetness. Wow, that's pretty. I adore carnations. This white carnation note is like a punch in the face (in a good way!) Dry: Beautiful. Primarily a carnation scent on my skin. Lots of rich sweetness and depth from the other notes. I love it. Good and strong, and long-wearing. It survived my washing machine breaking and me having to dig sopping wet sweaters out one at a time.... (p.s. I am DONE adulting for today.)

    Dana O'Shee Hair Gloss

I agree with my fellow Liz ^ - this is identical to the perfume. I too have found that often scents smell just slightly different in HG format (I am looking at you Mme. Moriarty, Strawberry Moon and most especially, Tricksy). But this is true Dana - glorious honey, hint of milk, and something that always smells sort of like almond, to me. It's perfect, glad to have it.

    The Wood-Pigeons Hair Gloss

OMG that grey amber note is EVERYTHING. Reminds me of Shadow from AG. Whereas Shadow is a "cool" scent though, the nuts and patch give this a much warmer vibe. It's fantastic and I love it. The patchouli is different than most of the Lab's patch notes - not too dry or earthy, not gnarly either. It goes beautifully with the other notes. This one is simple, but also stunning. Really glad I got a 1oz instead of just a 5ml tester - wondering if that will be enough.

    Eight Maids-a-Milking Hair Gloss

Umfg,,,this stuff is amazing. The hay (which is always this beautiful perfumey, slightly spicy scent on me) is prominent and backed up by the chestnut milk, which does smell different to me (less sour) than the Lab's usual milk note. The honey doesn't overpower at all, it just adds a lovely sweetness to the scent. LOVE this. I have been wanting a hay HG to wear with Hay Moon and the few other hay scents I have, and this is it.

The Forest in Winter at Sunset

I hike several times a week, in the woods by my house. There have been several afternoons this winter where I turned around a corner and was struck still by the beauty of the snow on the trees with the sun going down behind - the feeling of the cold still air. There's nothing like it, it brings me peace like nothing else can. Anyway, I remembered there had been a scent called "The Forrest in Winter at Sunset" and I thought how wonderful it would be to wear a scent by that name on my hikes. So I tracked it down, and here is hoping it works! (I wish I could share a photo I took the other day with all of you - it sums up the name of this scent perfectly. But I have yet to figure out how to share photos on the forum without a great deal of effort and frustration.) Wet: The amber is gorgeous. The oak is slightly sweet, not too dominant, and lovely. The moss is a little sharp - hoping that settles. I also yet some faint pine, though it's not listed. It's not great on my skin, and I am hoping that settles too. So far it does smell very forresty, but not quite what I was hoping. Pine smells like cat-pee on me, and this is doing that, and making me want to cry. Dry: This settles into something beautiful. The moss gives it a slight damp edge, very realistic of a forest blanketed in snow. The amber is warm and glowing, like the faint kiss of heat from the sun as it sets. I will be so happy to slather in this before my hike tomorrow. <3

    The Gaoler's Daughter

Wet: Blarg - all neroli (the only note in this I don't like, of course) aka soggy cardboard. Hoping it settles. Currently it's awful and I am saaaaddd. Dry: Yeah this is all bitter neroli on me. SO SAD. I love all the other notes, but I can't smell any of them. If you like orange blossom/neroli give this a go, otherwise - be warned. It may break your heard.

    2011: Pottery Phoenix

Wet: Warm sandalwood and hints of resins. It smells damp, also. Like the woods on a warm but wet day. It's quite atmospheric, and I like it so far, though it's not instant love. Dry: This is an interesting one! The sandalwood smells green and damp, rather than dry, to me. I do quite like it, but I just can't imagine myself wearing it. I bet it ages really well though.

    2012: Aluminum Phoenix

Wet: This smells exactly like the all-purpose spray cleaner I use. It's an all natural one, so it's not terrible or anything, it's just not anything I want to smell like. Dry: Yeah, citrus scented cleaner. Not for me!
  17. LizziesLuck

    2003: Cotton Phoenix

Wet: Mmmm. Snake Oil with almond and something.....breezy? I dunno if that's the right word. Yeah, breezy - I'm going with it. I don't even like almond usually - it smells like horrid fake cherry to me, even in the bottle, most of the time. This actually smells nutty, like almond paste. And it's utterly amazing with the Snake Oil. Currently reminds me of a less silly, more refined Snake Can. Dry: Having a tough time with this one, now that it's dry. The Snow White has come into play, and something about this is not playing well on me. I am nowhere near ready to give up on it though, so I am going to age it and see what happens. Snake Oil needs some age for me anyway.

    2004: Paper Phoenix

I waited a bit to try this - in theory so I could let my bottle settle, but I think I was also quite nervous it wouldn't live up tot he hype I had built for it in my mind. Wet: (insert expletives that I typed and then erased so as not to be crass...) WOW. Dorian and AL's love child is a beautiful thing. The lavender comes through stronger in this than plain Dorian. The custardy aspect from AL is going strong too. It manages to smell like tea and cakes and sex. Yeeeaaaaahh, buddy Dry: Mostly Dorian (though a slightly different Dorian - having a hard time pinning down why it's different) with some gorgeous Antique Lace vanilla. It's really lovely. And one can never have too many Dorian-like scents. (Especially if you are like me and Dorian is a comfort scent).

    Granite Hair Gloss

Brian's sweet Granite passed at Halloween in 2014, and our hearts broke. This scent is a captured memory: the day that a bottle of body lotion accidentally fell on him. Its a rich patchouli carnation mingled with warm fur and a hint of corn chip-paws. This is a sweet scent. Rich really is a good descriptor for the patchouli. The carnation is sweet and spicy. I don't get any corn chips at all. I do get a warm, lovely musk though. I have not been happy with patchouli scents lately, they have seemed to go weird to my nose, but this is lovely. It reminds me of the patchouli from Banshee Beat and Silkybat - sugared, somehow. It goes so well with the carnation. This is a simple scent, but beautiful, and it's a keeper. Glad I tried it!

    Deserted Theater Atmosphere Spray

Oooh, this is spooky and dreamy at the same time. It has just the perfect amount of dustiness to smell old and forgotten, without smelling like musty basement. The beeswax is gorgeous. I don't get a lot of leather, just a hint. I love this, I find it nostalgic and comforting and slightly haunting.

    Pumpkin Spice Snake Oil

So this bottle ended up at my Decantress' for quite some time, and then sat around waiting to be tested in my own bag log for quite some time, all of which is utterly fine with me, because I don't love fresh Snake Oil nearly so much as aged. Wet: I was so worried that the spice would be stronger than the S.O., but this is perfect. Very strongly Snake Oil, with mostly cinnamon as the "pumpkin spice". It's amazing. Way better than Saw-Scaled Viper, which was far too much spice, not enough snake on me. Dry: I ADORE this. I never imagined I might like it EVEN BETTER than regular Snake Oil. But I might. It's glorious with that extra bit of sugary sweetness and that hint of spice. Love it!! I likely need a back-up or 12.

    Joy and Fear

I love all the notes in this, and I have high hopes! Wet: Mmm, that's lovely. Smooth red sandalwood at the forefront. A hint of sweet benzoin. And just a touch of a very "classic" or maybe even "vintage" smelling rose musk. The rose musk is coming out more as it dries though. The whole feel of this is elegant and feminine. It's clean and classy. Very light though, I am wishing there was more throw. Dry: I don't know if this needs some aging, or if it's just not great on my skin chem, but it's gone really soapy. Or maybe powdery would be a better word? The glorious red sandalwood that I love so much has disappeared, as has the benzoin, and there's just a faint powdery soapy rose. Smells like a cold cream. Not what I was hoping for, sadly. I will age it and try it again another time.

    A Grateful Heart Hair Gloss

So I got this new vanilla and rose deodorant, and it smells SO GOOD, it has totally caused me to get back on a rose kick again. And has made me realize why I had kind of stopped loving rose for a while - I need more SUGARED rose (or rose with lots of sweet notes) than I had previously been buying. Anyway, I digress. My point is, this scent could not have come out at a better time. It is a GORGEOUS sugary rose scent with sandalwood and I want to buy a big bottle and spray it all over everything I own.

    The Gilded Coach Hair Gloss

I get mostly cake and nutty gingerbread. It's quite yummy. Buttery and rich. Not too much spice. It smells like there's cardamom in it! It actually reminds me of My Little Grotesque. Not a bad thing, at all! The cardamom (I swear that's what it is!) gives it a lovely perfumey edge. Keeps it from being too gourmand. This is fantastic.

    Desolate Farmhouse Atmosphere Spray

Dry, forgotten hay bales, discarded scythes, and stalks of ergot-thick rye swaying gently in the gloaming. Wow, this is creepy. It really does conjure up imagines of abandoned fields under a darkened sky. The rye (which is a really neat scent!) comes through a bit stronger than the hay. It's just sweet enough. I don't know how much I will use it - not sure if I want my house to smell like this, but I may spray it on my clothes before I go for a hike - it's suited to walks through the darkening woods and fields on a gloomy day.
