    Mat Night

The joy of wanton mischief: caramelized tobacco and slowly falling snow muffling the scent of a distant fire. This is fresh out of the mail, because I couldn't wait. I've never tried a scent like this before, and didn't know what to expect. I couldn't pass up caramelized tobacco though. In the bottle, this is a really cold scent. The Lab's snow note is really strong. Wet on my skin, the smoke note blooms first, but then the caramelized tobacco follows quickly. It's sweetly smoky, not at all bitter. Now I get the snow note more in the throw than nose to skin. Dry this is similar to wet, not much of a morpher on me, keeping in mind that it's right out of the mail. This is difficult to describe, since it's not my usual type of scent and I don't have much of a point of reference. Quite gender neutral. It's really beautiful, but not at all in a feminine way. It's not beautiful the way that flowers are beautiful. It's beautiful in the way that a winter's night is beautiful, in the way that a roaring fire is beautiful. It's fierce yet peaceful. I'm quite enjoying the juxtaposition of the snow note against the fire/smoke notes. The hint of sweetness is perfect. I am so happy I ventured out of my comfort zone and purchased this. It will hold a special place in my collection.

    Huit Hair Gloss

I expected to really like this scent, so I got a 1oz of the HG rather than just a little tester. When I tried my decant of the perfume though, I was not a fan. Hopefully this translates better for me as a gloss. At first there as a blast of rose, and I love it. Then I get something that smells suspiciously like orange blossom...but then it comes back around to rose. It's that sort of "astringent" rose that tricks my nose into thinking there is citrus involved. I get a bit or tart apricot, but the fig is lost completed. I am sad, as I adore these three notes, but for whatever reason they just don't come together well on me. This isn't bad, mind you. It's still a pleasant rose scent. Just not the glory I was expecting.

    Sign of Sekkusu Hair Gloss

Oh this is so good! It immediately reminds me a bit of Black Vanilla and Cardamom HG (which of course has tobacco in it too), But this is sweeter I think, and has even more gorgeous cardamom. The labdanum starts to amp up as this warms. I love labdanum, so I am not mad at it, but it takes this much father away from BV and C - the resemblance was fleeting. No matter, this is really gorgeous. Landanum, vanilla and cardamom, with hints of pale tobacco. I love it, and am glad I got a full size.

    Three Couples Hair Gloss

Gorgeous. Like, stunning. Was worried about the orange blossom, but this is all sticky fig and spicy incense. I have never smelled anything that smells even remotely like this (and after how much BPAL I have tried, that is saying a lot! I'm a wee bit of an addict). This is masterful. I get tiny hints of Tonka. But the fig is really the star, blended with that beautiful incense. Something just a touch bright comes through, and I do think that may be orange blossom, but it's not bitter on me like it usually is. This is absolutely lovely.

    Dee Hair Gloss

I haven't worn Dee for a bit, it lives in my Fall collection. This smells like a mix between the aged imp I fell head over heels for, and the fresh bottle that is a bit too rough around the edges still. I think I get less leather and more parchment in this format/ Lots of sweet Tonka (one of the few scents where I can clearly pick Tonka out) and lots of spicy incense. Hints of wood. This is such a gorgeous scent. It does go on a bit like a blast of cheap cologne, but only seconds later it settles into the magic that is Dee. I kind of want to roll in it, and wish Puddin had made a BO of it too.

Wet: Immediately super comforting. Smells like the dry hot chocolate powder to me (with the little marshmallows in it!) more than when it's mixed with hot water or milk, but still very nice, very soothing. Yummy. Makes me want hot chocolate! Dry: Powdery chocolate. Still a pleasant scent, just not something I would reach for. Really glad I got to try it though!

    Cobra Lily

Wet: Hmm, this is a lot different than other lily scents I have tried. Lily often smells like wet cardboard on me...bitter and strange. This is more green than anything. Dry: Dries much less green. I would call it a sweet, soapy floral. Not great on my skin chem, there are many other florals I love much more.

    Robin Goodfellow

Wet: Much sweeter than I anticipated. Something really floral? I guess the ragwort of heather, neither of which I am super familiar with. It's also got some lovely green notes. HOWEVER it smells like a cat peed on it. So, a garden with some interesting greenery and florals that your cat took the liberty of christening. Lovely. I don't get any musk. Unless it's cat musk...? Dry: Dries down much nicer, sans cat pee. Smells like sweet plants. I don't want to say floral, cuz it's not really. But it's not really herbal either. Or green. It's just...planty. A nice sweet planty smell. I enjoy it, but don't think I would reach for it.

    Hoggle

Wet: Lots of typical "pumpkin spices" but with some grounding earthy and woody notes. Sweet caramel-ey tobacco. YUM. I typically don't like pumpkin or pumpkin spice type scents, with only a few exceptions, but I am adoring this. That earthy quality is EVERYTHING. I can smell the dust too, and just a hint of leather, and it's really rather glorious. If this dries the same as it has started, there will be a bottle in my future. Also - why do I feel like I smell coffee in this? Dry: This is seriously awesome. I do smell coffee. And tobacco, and spices, well worn leather. Just the right amount of pumpkin (but it's not buttery - pumpkin is often buttery on me and not nice). I really like this, and am thinking about adding a bottle to my Autumn rotation.

    The Chicken-Legged Hut

Thank you to the lovely VioletVorpal who frimped this to me! Been wanting to try it for ages. Wet: Cinnamon raison oatmeal. Yum! Not heavy on the cinnamon, just a touch. And not overly sweet either. Super warm and comforting! Smells like being a kid, feeling safe and warm. I really like it. (Saving review here, will update with dry down. My power will likely go out tonight due to wind. Lol) ETA, Dry: Much the same. Dries a bit sweeter, a bit less spicy, but still very oaty and comforting. I would get a bottle if I ever had the chance. In the meantime, Halfling is a good substitute (though it smells more like oatmeal cookies to me).

    The Other Mother's Right Hand

I have so many imps I need to test, I am going to try to get through 2 a night for a week! (That won't even put a dent in it, but it's a start. Wet: Sweet orris and smoky vetiver, in equal measures. I don't really get the DB, but it is sweet and resinous. Not that floral, high pitched DB, at any rate. Mostly vetiver right now. Pleasant, but not something I want to wear. Going to post this now and update after dry because I have a feeling my power is going to go out (wind storm). ETA, Dry: This dries somewhat strange. Still smoky, but also sort of..waxy? Plasticy? I don't know how to describe it. Strange. Not for me! Glad I got to try it though.

Pinning Up the Shimada Hair Gloss

I have been longing for a lilac HG. With these notes, I am not expecting lilac to come out on top, but I had to try it just in case it does. OMG it's totally lilac dominant at first! The rose then comes through, but you can still totally smell the lilac strongly. I worried ylang ylang would be super strong, but it's just some added sweetness in the background. I can't pick out the other two florals, though it does have a very faint "tropical" vibe, maybe the plumeria? What a lovely spring floral scent, and I am so glad the lilac is really strong in it. Still somehow overpowering that rose! Wonderful. If you love lilac, don't be scared off by the other notes.

    Phallus-Headed Bird Hair Gloss

I totally could not resist these notes! I love hay, and sandalwood. This kind of smells as you would expect! Nutty, sweetly fruity with a hint of tang, slightly woody, and a touch of perfumey hay. It's lovely! Very different than anything I have. I wasn't sure I would be able to identify kukui nut, but it's that same nutty note from Halfling, very identifiable. Actually I can see wearing this together with Halfling. Lovely and different! Glad I got some.

    The Fool’s Tranquility

I love pink pepper. I love honey. I love blends of a couple simple notes. This was a no-brainer for me. Wet: Warm floral honey, warm spicy-floral pink pepper. This scent glows. It's gorgeous. It somehow reminds me of A Thought From Propertius, though without the fruit note. Love it. It's interesting to me how floral both the honey and pink pepper are. There is almost a sugar note along with the honey. This isn't the honey of say, O. It reminds more of the Rappaccini's Apiary honeys. Dry: Gorgeous. Honey dominant, with spicy floral pink pepper notes. It's a very sugary honey, if that makes any sense. I love the simplicity of it. I adore honey scents, it's one of my favourite notes, and I am so happy to have this. Other honey lovers should give it a go too. The honey is almost musky - not quite a honey musk note, but almost. Gorgeous.

    Narr

Wet: I always worry about milk/cream notes. They aren't always great on me. But this combo of milk and honey reminds me of both Alice and Dana O'Shee - it's lovely. Warm, comforting. I want to say maternal, as well. The almond comes through strongly on me while wet. From experience, that will likely fade. I can't smell any fig or ambrette seed yet. Hope they come through later, I love both notes. Dry: Soft, warm and comforting - the honey and milk come through in equal measures. I really can't detect any of the other notes, sadly. I do enjoy this, but not sure I love it. May see if aging brings out the other notes.

    The Fool’s Dog

I got this hoping that the canine musk would be similar to the musk in Canis Major which I adore so much. I also love grass and cardamom. Wet: Oh! Oh. What is THAT? It's almost effervescent. Tickles my nose a bit. No clue what is going on here, I can't pick a thing out. As it settles, I get hints of something warm, sweet, and woody. Also hints of grass. It's a super interesting scent, entirely pleasant, and like nothing I have smelled before, so I am having a really hard time defining it. Doesn't actually smell like dog, if you were worried. I have realized I don't really know what yew smells like - that may be the warm woodiness I am getting. Oh! There's the cardamom. Mmm. This is a really neat scent. I feel like it changes every time I sniff it. Dry: Sweet, very light musk, slightly fuzzy, and grass. It's quite different and very nice. Makes me smile. I will wear this outdoors all spring, it's that sort of scent.

    Blauer Mond 2018

I feel like this is either going to be a disaster on me (pine and oudh) or be pure magic (musk, amber, tobacco) Wet: A moment of disasterous cat-pee-pine before the amber swoops in and saves things. YESSS. Now it is sweet, realistic pine (no poopy oudh yet) with just a touch of tobacco. Totally wearable, so far. Doesn't WOW me, but quite pleasant. Dry: This dries to a LOVELY amber and woods scent. Seriously, it's lovely. I adore amber. Amber with just a touch of forest makes me even happier. Winner!

    The Stranger

Wet: Dark, rich. Tough to describe, initially. It's velvety smooth darkness, with small pinpoints of brightness, like stars in the night sky. I get no violet, which is what scared me about this blend (thank you so much to my Decantress for the free sniffy bottle, otherwise I never would have tried this!!) There's a hint of spice. but I wouldn't have identified it as clove. More like...white pepper? Maybe I am smelling a part of the chypre. This is SO INTERESTING. I have been fascinated with chypres since Mabel. This is kind of incredible. I keep sniffing it and sniffing it. It's rich, resiny, sweet from the labdanum. Hints of the moss come through very faintly, giving it an earthy quality. I can barely detect a whisper of lilac, but no violet still. But mostly it's that gorgeous chypre which I find so utterly ineffable. Glorious. Dry: This goes through a bunch of phases on me. None as good as that first, wet stage. The middle stage is high pitched and quite floral and perfumey, though the floral notes aren't recognizable as either lilac or violet, really. The end stage is still perfumey, but also very mossy, slightly earthy, and somewhat soapy. I know that sounds weird, but it's still totally pleasant and intriguing. It's just not the total glory that was this scent when I first put it on. I may give it another go in a few weeks, see how it does with some more settling.

    The Scapegoat

Wet: Lots of leather, but the smooth warm worn leather that I LOVE. Reminds me of Unicorn and Ram, Hochelaga. Has that sort of feel. It's a warm snuggly woody leather scent, with rich resins to sweeten it up. Lovely. Unisex. Dry: This is so lovely and comforting and snuggly. The leather is to die for - soft, well worn, almost sueded. It's warm and rich, slightly woody, slightly sweet from the resins. Really nice. It really does somehow remind me of Unicorn and Ram - I need to do a side by side. I may have to have more of this!

    Fate's Jester

I immediately thought of Silkybat when I saw the description of this, so I had to at least try it! Wet: Yes, this is like someone pinned Silkybat down and smeared lemon buttercream frosting all over it. It's a bit sexy, a bit fresh. Sweet and tart at the same time. Dry: Once dry, this turns a bit powdery on me. Powdery lemon, plus the patch from Silkbat. I am not the biggest fan of lemon, so I won't need more of this, however I imagine I will use my little decant-in-bottle occasionally. If you do like lemon, and you like Silkybat, GET THIS.

    Il Matto

I adore red sandalwood, and am forever in search of more scents where it shines. Wet: Ermagherd, red sandalwood and glorious chewy tobacco (like French tobacco SN type tobacco). I can now die happy. Why didn't I just get a bottle of this? Gah. There's something spicy happening here too. Almost peppery? I dunno, I am not familiar with palo santo. It may be copal I am smelling.Yeah, that's sweet resiny copal. There's something a bit incensey about this. It's fucking glorious. Excuse my language, but I am THAT excited. This is really different. BUT THEN the Frank starts to happen. Echo my ass, that`s a shout of Frankincense. *sigh*. Dry: I LOVED this, when I first put it on. And then Frank bullied his way in and stomped all over everything and ruined it for me. It`s still good. I just don`t LOVE it when it`s dry.

Wet: Sweet rose and tart orange. The orange dominates at first, then the rose quickly takes over. The benzoin adds a rich thickness to the scent, if that makes any sense. It's quite lovely. The orange has stayed true on me so far. Dry: Wow, this is lovely. I can't believe how good this orange note is on me, usually it turns to powdered bathroom cleaner. I wish the rose came through stronger now that it's dry. It's mostly orange on me. I do like it, but can't picture wearing it. If you're an orange lover though, totally worth a try.

    Douze

Wet: Tea rose comes out the strongest so far. Very pretty. Sweet and delicate. The other notes are just providing a base, and I can't really pick them out individually. The whole thing smells pink and girly and pretty. Dry: Sadly this fades to almost nothing, and what is left is a touch soapy. Not my fave of the dozen roses.

    Sugared Apple Bath Oil

I was excited to snag this off Etsy. I love the smell of apple, but I don't really want to smell LIKE it, so I figured this would be perfect for soaking in the tub (which I do a lot). This is exactly as advertised - gorgeous sugared apple. It's more complex than that though, the sugar is almost caramelized, and the apple has an almost floral note behind it. And maybe some citrus? Or it could just be the tartness of the apple. Anyway, YUM. Really happy I got this, it's perfect for spring.

    The Pearl Seeker Bath Oil

I always enjoyed BPTP bath oil, but recently I have totally fallen in love with it. I now use it both as a moisturizer any time, and also pour copious amounts into my baths. My skin thanks me for this. I love that there isn't a ton of chemicals in it. This scent is gorgeous. Lots of really sweet lavender, that immediately puts this in the "bedtime scent" category for me. Hints of lovely florals. Lovely and honeyed. I don't get any sandalwood or orris. This is all about lavender, honey, and a bit of peony. Gorgeous. Good for daytime also. Very springy. I love it.
