    Schmendrick

In the imp: This smells like fairly generic men's cologne. Wet on my skin: Delicious spices! I couldn't really pick out an individual note from this while it was wet, but that's fine since it smelled just really nice. Dry: When I was a very young child, I used to sit on my grandpa's knee and press my cheek up against his scratchy, stubbly cheek while he sang off-key lullabies to me. He wore Old Spice aftershave/cologne and smoked tobacco in cigarette or pipe form. THIS is the scent of my beloved childhood grandpa, who passed away suddenly when I was 7 years old. The scent memory with this was so powerful that I spent half an hour telling my boyfriend about my grandpa and all the imagery this scent brought back to me. The sage, sandalwood, and chamomile blend together perfectly, and then there's a waft of the tobacco and a little hint of sweetness underneath the rest of the scent. After a couple hours, this scent morphed on me quite a bit. The spiciness softened, and the sandalwood, caramel, and raisins finally came out and sweetened the scent. It picked up a vaguely smoky note as well. It hung much closer to my skin at this point, but I still kept getting these delicious little reminders of the scent as I moved about.

    Redoul Honey

There were six(!!!) free imps in the box with my Last Unicorn packs, and while sniffing them, I accidentally got Redoul Honey on me. Here’s a review of that: In the imp: Cloyingly sweet and tangy honey-fruit scent at first, but then it reminds me of the blackberry breakfast syrup I used to make at the cafe where I worked. This smells like the hot syrup when I was sugaring it and cooking it down in the pan. Wet on my skin: Hope you like honey, honey! Powerful sweet honey with that berry note, but it’s too strong and sharp to be entirely pleasant to my nose. Dry: GET IT OFF. My skin chemistry does not work at all with something in this. I like honey, but this is honey with death mixed in. Literally. It’s like there’s this undercurrent of sweet rot and decay. On someone with the right skin chemistry, this could be a deliciously fruity honey, but not on me.

    Hagsgate

In the imp: This doesn’t have a very strong scent in the imp, but I can detect the cucumber and herbs, and yep there’s the patchouli. Wet on my skin: Oh, hello patchouli and hay! It’s not like stable hay, though, but rather the sweet drying bales out in the field. And there’s everything else growing in the field, too. I can’t really pick out the individual vegetable notes, but it’s got a pleasant sort of earthy herbal smell on my skin. Dry: Mmmm. It’s not very powerful on me, but I still get that lovely sweet hay and herbal scent, with the dark, fertile soil and more patchouli, which on me goes smoky. This is all the pleasant scents you’d get whiffs of as you walked through the fields of a medieval farming town. It smells a little different each time I sniff it. I’m not sure it’s big bottle worthy, but I’ll definitely use up the imp.

    The Midnight Carnival

In the imp: Strong and sharp, I can definitely smell the wood notes and the patchouli. There’s a smoky scent in there that I think is myrrh incense, and just a hint of sweet that’s probably the cacao and lavender. Wet on my skin: Freshly-hewn spicy wood with a touch of patchouli. Still has that smoky edge to it from the patchouli and myrrh, and I’m liiiking that note. Dry: Oh, I LIKE this. Really like this. I might need a big bottle of it. This smells like expensive wood, smoke, and incense, and it’s got this dark and almost sharp edge to it. It’s like what you might smell when walking into a little voodoo shop in Louisiana. I’m not getting much of the lavender or cacao, except for a very faint and somehow dark/musty sweetness at the back of the scent, like at the very end of each sniff. Edit: Wore this out and about to a rehearsal last night, and it made me smell like I'd been dancing around a magical, incensed bonfire in the middle of the pine/spruce forests here. It's wonderful and I love it even more than when I first tried it. Definitely going for a big bottle of this once my imp starts running low.

    The Last Unicorn

In the imp: Smells like a bag of white chocolate Lindt truffles. Wet on my skin: Smells like I rolled in white chocolate truffles, but now there’s hints of leafy greens and lilac wafting through the air as I roll in the white chocolate. Dry: The white chocolate note has finally calmed down, and now I can smell this lovely, light, almost antique or wistful sort of scent. I can distinctly smell the sandalwood and moss, and the green leaves, and then floating atop the earthier scents is this lovely cool purple lilac. It’s a very natural lilac, and the whole thing gives the impression of a summertime forest when the lilacs are in bloom. There’s a cool note to it, though, like how all of the greenery and flowers would smell after a sprinkle of rain. It’s very unusual, but I like it. I’ll definitely use the imp, and if it keeps working so well on my skin, we’ll see about a bottle.
