this enveloped me in an aura of powdered sugar. not too heavy on the pecan scent. wasn't very buttery on me. a little bit of cream and an echo of vanilla. mostly powdered sugar with a richness at the base. love this one.

Captain Lilith and her First Mate
annemathematics replied to tativa's topic in Black Phoenix Trading Post
didn't get a lot of rum from this. the scent reminds me of the most amazing coconut sunscreen. it's sweet and bright and delicious and makes me smile. has a good, modest throw and lasted all afternoon when I wore it. -
A Stroll Through the Quarter
annemathematics replied to tativa's topic in Black Phoenix Trading Post
the notes in stroll through the quarter play like songs on an album. each in it's turn, and then it's over. bananas open, then soft and sweet incense, closing with dorian. each part of it is lovely but it doesn't last very long (a quick stroll through the quarter!) -
I agree with the above laundry in the sun comment. this might be my favorite of the post's lilith scents. fresh grass and soft flowers with a gentle bit of sap giving it some warmth and depth. it's so bright and happy and is pure loveliness. it's an instant mood lifter with nice throw and good staying power.

oh, I love Aubin! that scent is amazing in the summer. bright and spicy and just gorgeous. I actually love all of this year's ECCC scents. the three perfume oils I tried are each top ten worthy.

my bottle is labeled # III I can't for the life of me place the notes on this. I'm fairly confident with food smells, resins and some standard florals (rose, violet, ylang ylang, jasmine, etc) but I'm not able to identify much from here. it's a bit of an outer space scent for me. there's something high and bright and silvery and pale shiny purple about it. (maybe traces of indol or lavender or eucalyptus are present here, but again with this whole blend it's hard for me to confidently identify anything.) it's rather celestial and has a hint of powdery to it (but not baby powder, thank the stars). it's rich and strong and lasts for days. at first I was a bit disappointed as this is very much removed from my standard arsenal of smells, but I've come to adore this scent. as it's out of my comfort zone, I tend to not wear it out when I'm in a crowd so much as when I'm home or out doing my own thing. it has a mix of beautiful and compelling and slightly disconcerting. my CT HG is pretty much this in a bottle: thanks, Puddin, for my magical bowie clown hair treat!

2014 version. first applied this is a decant, but it quickly morphs into a full bottle buy. seriously, I can do some but not all foodie scents. . loved yule cookies, couldn't wear braving the ice. I slather sweets to the sweet but can't pull off sugar skulls. the other hot chocolate smells like chipotle on me, but ein kuss von krampus and blood kiss bon bon are smell like glorious perfumes. and then there's this one. THIS ONE I can and gladly will wear. sugared incense. bright and sweet wafting over a nice rich syrupy resin foundation. even with beer as a note, it doesn't smell boozy at all. (if I didn't read beer on the notes list, I wouldn't know it was in here) there's a real warmth to this scent and it's one of my favorites of this year's weenies. so pretty, so happy. I put it on and immediately break out in smiles.

some bpal honeys smell so good on me. horse chestnut honey, womb furie honeys, sweets to the sweet honeys. sometimes honey notes go a little wacky on me though, and turn. strange and sweaty and just rather wrong. this alas is one of those honeys that doesn't benefit from my skin chemistry. initially on, this is a gorgeous perfume, orange blossom prominent. after about twenty minutes the honey took over and I could smell no other notes.

this was sweetened creamy coffee on me. with some pastry in the background. I felt like I was in an old-fashioned coffee shop with wooden walls and hustle and bustle behind the counter and people reading books and newspapers in comfy seating while drinking refills of strong lovely coffee. unlike cafe 1001 nights or distructive vag of the fox spirit, this isn't a cologne or a perfume with a coffee note in it, but rather this is the straight up smell of being in a cozy and delicious coffee shop itself. alas I was not in such a place, nor near such a place, and so I began experiencing hunger pangs and cravings galore. this has a great throw and lasted for many hours. if you want warm rich foody coffee smells in your aura, this is it! I'd be careful wearing it around the under-caffeinated, as they may rush you in a frenzy.

I confess I was expecting a stonier scent, closer to placaphobia or rending of the rock, but what I got was a pretty white floral. not much sweetness, just enough throw. lovely! although not the type of scent I ususally reach for, I'll very much enjoy my decant.
-
this starts out smelling of dirt and grass. gorgeous warm bpal dirt and grass. feels just like being outside in the sun. as it dries down, a sweet floral note comes out, and becomes stronger as the dirt note fades. the end result is the cousin to butterflies, flowers and jewels attending and ava. very lovely and a total mood brightener. one of my favorites from this year's liliths. (strangely, I don't smell any dog at all)

I think you could pack quite a few imps in the plastic bag that you are allotted in a carry on. as to how many, I think that depends on how many people would be attending the sniffie party. 5? 20? I'd likely bring gc's as then there's no worry if any get lost and if you bring in new bpal recruits those are nice and easy for them to find. people may fall in love and you'll find yourself compelled to gift away some imps, so then you'll have an easier time replacing your stock if needed. I'd bring a mix of what you personally like, a few oddball scents and a few classic scents to show the range. also if there's a scent that you've noticed smells dramatically different on different people, you could bring that to show how oils scents shift with the wearer. also I'd bring some somniums and annoint everyone before you go off to sleep.

i just realized curved sky is still available for purchase?! your description of curved sky sounds really lovely. how would you say it compares to eldritch drunken constellations? they are very different. I love them both, but they are different. curved sky is heavy on the opoponax, chewy glorious resiny goodness. the citrus is strong wet, then it dies down and the dry scent is rich and magical and , uh, chewy. (reading the reviews page, I see that other people had different experiences, so you may as well) I sometimes tend to like the weirder bpals, and this is maybe one of them. it's so pretty and strange and huffable that I hate to call it weird, but I think that if you tend to prefer more classic perfumes, this might not be one you reach for very much. eldritch is brighter and lighter in tone (it has a good through and wear length) and smoother and creamier. I'm sadly not doing them justice here, but they are different but each is fantastic.

I love ambergris! eldritch drunken constellations is amazing! and it pops up in forum sales. black forest is gorgeous. anthony, satyr and vicomte de valmont are all very much colognes, but they are beautiful and, I think, wearable by ladies alike. http://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/product-tag/ambergris-accord/ shows some other scents currently available. diamond star is on the soft side as is autumn overlooked my knitting, so you might enjoy that one. each of the scents shows a different side of the ambergris, so none are going to be dupes, but hopefully you'll find something you also enjoy wearing. my current favorite scent with ambergris is curved sky. http://centuryguild.net/collections/scented-oils/products/curved-sky-limited-edition-scented-oil-from-black-phoenix-alchemy-lab for me, it is heavy on the opoponax so it's going to be different than knitting. think a swirl of citrus where the current is and delicious resin instead of autumn leaves. it's one of my top ten bpals.

if I were out camping and a bolt of lightning stuck a nearby tree/log, and I then ran up and inhaled the still-smoking scorched area of that wood...that is what this smells like to me. I really love it and this actually combines so beautifully with the other scents in this lunacy series (I don't know how intentional this is, but to me/on me this series seems like it was meant to be layered).

I love hellboy! the comics and the movies! I thought that this scent might smell of hellboy himself, but it's actually very high and bright, while I would expect hellboy to smell deep and dark and smokey. so this is not him so much as his cologne. (I think hellboy unadorned would smell like peninsula fulminum, smokey and otherworldly and rich). this does smell like powdery aftershave. there's a sweetness to it as well, both in scent and in disposition. don't get much cat or much brimstone, but perhaps if I let this bottle sit and lurk in the dark for a few months, those notes will come out. this is a like for me but not a love.

agree above with the almond lime cookies. this is a very sweet and bright buttery cookie scent. there's a petite waft of lilies after drydown. I expected a combination of haute macabre and pere fouttard or something weirdly similar, but what I get when I wear it is cookies! And while this scent says witching herbs and mini mag says kitchen spices, this scent had more spices to me and mini mag had a weird herbal secret back note. But I might have just been confused when I tested them the same night. Sweet foody lime buttery cookies that fade. this is fun, but completely different than what I expected. I thought it would be darker, but it's a lilith's little girls' scent, and instead it's bright and fun and just a touch silly.

on me this is heavy sweet beeswax with the vanilla ice cream behind it. the sandlewood is a subtle background player. not much smoke. as light and as sweet a beeswax-heavy bpal as I've ever met. ETA with age the vanilla cream has gotten much heavier. this is melted ice cream swirling in warm wax. mini mag layers amazingly well with OLLA adam. I can't pull off wearing mini mag alone. it's too richly foodie and sweet for my taste. but it layers insanely well with other scents, and the adam combo is addictive to the point that I'm going to need an intervention.

What BPAL scents could represent a mermaid?
annemathematics replied to Silverstar's topic in Recommendations
waters of the well of wisdom was aquatic and herbal, but not evil. cthuhlu perhaps? gc and impable! boundless vista of an inner world from the 2013 yules? -
this is for devil's night 2014 so I came to this one with set expectations. boozy, musky, sugary...I was kind of expecting something akin to smutty goblin hair gloss, which I love. this is much much brighter and sweeter and higher. in the bottle and wet on the skin, it reminds me of something close to bubblegum. so sweet it makes my gums ring, so bright it's hard to really get a handle on the other notes. just like with bubblegum, there's a level of artifice to this sweetness. the hint of smokiness (a touch of sweaty fog machine more than tobacco) on top of the sweet artifice reminds me of shopping at spencer gifts, a very special mall store, in the 80's. which actually matches the theme of devil's night nicely. The smell also reminds me of the inside of a new rubbery spooky mask. Also fitting. I appreciate this scent but don't adore it. I'm going to keep it around and let it age and see if either it or I transform into a better combination. if you're reading this and I haven't added to it, pm me so I can update this review. thanks!

some bpal scents start out like their namesake or theme but then morph into a perfume or cologne that's related to the origin/story/name but more wearable. not so much this one. this smells like a painted, enclosed industrial space in the bottle, wet and dry. punk rock warehouse living in a bottle. foreign exchange high school basement flashback. all right here. extremely well done and fun to try but I will prob not wear this much.
-
on wet (admittedly fresh from the mailbox) I could smell each of the notes most distinctly. dry smokey leaves, beloved ambergris, and the current lending a fruity brightness. as this dries down, the elements come together and I get flashbacks of working in a yard store. that smell of wool and silk skeins has been bottled! crazy. as a perfume, the scent is very very pretty. a bit cleaner and brighter than what I normally reach for, but I'm still keeping this bottle

amber, white cocoa, musk, vanilla, dead leaves: I love each of the listed notes here. this scent takes the best possible quality of each note and combines it into one super dreamy perfume. it's a mixed-tape of my favorite songs in perfect order, and it's going to be played in heavy rotation on my walkman until the bottle runs dry. soft, sweet, vanilla-musk-incense-magic.

wet, this is a soft and gentle patch, a bit of vanilla and champaca. as the scent dries, these hunker down into the skin and the BALSAM comes out and gently flits around my aura. not over the top, not in your face, but popping in now and again for a soft fragrant hello over the next few hours. I adore bpal balsam, so this scent makes me happy. it's soft and fuzzy like a little van/patch/champa butterfly body with fluttering balsam wings.

creamy dreamy sandalwood...with a hint of vanilla and something almost orange. I adore kit, but can't describe it in a way that does it any justice. it's one of my favorite bpals, and I broke my "no backups" rule for this one. beautiful soft sensual kit. a favorite scent in a favorite collection. eta today I wore kit again. kit is total magic. instantly restores brilliance and beauty during those times when the craziness of the world gets too overwhelming.
