Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume
annemathematics replied to Ina Garten Davita's topic in Recommendations
aw, man. I used to love dzing! it was my last big bottle of alcohol based perfume that I ended up gifting away when I turned fully to the perume oil side. pathetically, i can't remember how it smelled enough to think of a comperable bpal right now. I'll have to sneak into a department store and try it again and see what I can come up with. regarding the flying fox, the trading post has a bath oil that was an LE last spring but still comes up on their etsy site. it is called Seblstverliebt and it is a vanilla jasmine, but it tickles the same spot in my brain as flying fox (selbstverliebt is similar to--and honestly superior to--the lush tender is the night massage bar). there was also a single note, sampaguita, that might work for you. also not an exact match, but Lily, the prostitute from the pretty deadly line, has a similar sense of jasmine to lush's flying fox and godiva shampoo. Ah, man- I wouldn't know how to explain Dzing! to people because of what it does on me- I think it's a little different than what it does for others. I can wear a lot of perfume so far- Hypnotic Poison was the only one to ever go weird on me when I tried it in a store (in 10 minutes it became salty playdoh, exactly, what the HECK). I'm curious why people completely give up alcohol based perfumes and entirely switch to oils? I've seen some others mentioning that too? If you get another whiff of Dzing, let me know what you think is similar, BPAL wise! Thanks for the possible flying fox reccomendations! I will miss the weird pot/musky thing that it does on me so much! But maybe I can find something I like even better... There's something in alcohol perfumes that smells like formaldehyde to my nose. Just a hint in the background but I notice it more since I started wearing more oil perfumes. Even my own beloved favorites, like dzing, rose elixir, untitled margiela do it, and I'd love to find bpal equivalents of all three. There's another bpal scent called lady death:savage, that is a vanilla musk with a nice jasmine in the drydown. Not an exact flying fox match, but you might enjoy it and it'll take the sting out of giving up the flying fox. I've found that all of my favorite lush scents get axed, and they took away the retro section so there is no hope if me seeing/smelling them again. Not entirely painful as lush stuff can be drying to my skin, but some of those smells are crack-like. ..as are many bpals. I hope you find new scents here that you enjoy! -

Bittersweet chocolate cupcakes whisked with stout and topped with inky dark chocolate frosting. oh, chocolate stout cupcake, what a magical thing you are. in the bottle and just applied, this smells exactly like fudgy chocolate ganache. this is a very dark and very effective chocolate smell. most foodie bpals do not actually make me hungry, but this one instills an instant and absurdly strong craving for dark, moist, thickly-frosted chocolate cake. as it dries a deep malty richness comes forward from the stout. there's a touch of vanilla and something almost musky and warm. sometimes chocolate perfumes go to plastic or sweat on me, but this becomes a glorious vibrant perfume. this is a foodie masterpiece. bravo, beth!

I love the vixen perfume, and was thrilled when this won the lunacy poll. I can smell the orange blossom more in the hg than I can in the perfume, but they are very close and both extremely gorgeous. this would be a fantastic gc hg...just saying...

in the bottle, I can smell the leather, the red musk and the myrrh. on the skin, I smell like sweaty musky leather. hot in the desert leather. toiling under the whips of egyptians leather. no dry cleaners leather. that said, I like this quite a bit. it smells better on others than it does on me, but it's a, uh, fun plague. (can I call plagues like this fun?)

in the bottle there is cherry and heavy wet patch. once applied, the cherry disappears on me and doesn't return. this is not a fruity scent. not a foodie scent. nope, not at all. this is, in fact, the heaviest, funkiest patchouli I've ever smelled from a bpal. the sandalwood is woven in close with the patch and is adding to the mayhem. it's so strong on me that I maybe shouldn't wear it out, even here in the former hippie heaven of the bay area. however I am smitten with this funky beast and I fully intend to keep this around and wear it often and see how it ages. I know we all gush about how every bpal will age and they almost all astound us, but I think that the life of this scent will be epic. the labdanum is nicely present (mmm!) and adds a bit of wet texture. this is a very beautiful, rich labdanum! the opoponax, however, is all ninja and hard to find. I love the name of this. I can't wait to tell folks what I'm wearing. eta THIS SCENT and the banshee beat/revenant rhythm have unleashed in me a fearsome craze for all of my bpal patch scents. and after about a month, this one has shifted a little bit. still cherry in the bottle, and now also a little cherry detected when wet, but when this scent has dried down, the cherry is mostly noticeable in adding juiciness to the texture. the patch is a leeetle bit mellower and the sandalwood is ever so slightly more pronounced. although I think this will age well, I don't know if I'll get to find out; I'm addicted to this stuff and my bottle may not last very long.

I tested this next to two other ladies, on whom it was a glorious vanilla sandalwood. on me, it was pure cedary goodness. a plague of hamsters nooks!
-
I was worried this might go to cinnamon red hots candies on me, but that note is actually nicely restrained. it adds a sense of heat and a sweet spiciness, but doesn't take over the blend. there is a nice swirl of resins and a sweet almond note, and the whole of it is gorgeous for 15 minutes before my skin devours it completely. Spoiler eta, something about this scent makes me think it would go well in this movie (and I know it's different than the book, but I like both, ok?)

I love each of the notes in this scent, except for grape, which is an unknown for me. I tested plagues next to two other bpallers, and this worked on both of them. on me, alas it was a profoundly strong and unsavory warm raisin wine. my chemistry did this blend no favors.

the listed notes here are 1/3 love, 1/3 wary of and 1/3 "hey i like you but I don't know you very well." cedar and honey, prone to sometimes amping too much or smelling a little off on me, do none of the above. the notes I love, shine shine shine. this is a scent that helped me "get" orange blossom. why people love it. why they wear it. I understand its beauty now!!! it is all made clear!! the wet stage of this is epic/fantastic/glorious to behold. however, in every bpal scent with beeswax, within an hour, that note will take over and the other scents will simply inform the nature of that waxy aura. as is the case with this scent; within an hour, it dries down to an amazing orange blossom/citrus wax. this is one of my favorite wax scents from bpal so far.

dark chocolate and lavender with a burst of berry. very beautiful and wearable. a brighter, sweeter sister to wulric the wolfman. alas, this disappears on me within about ten minutes. nice while it lasts though!

I can smell the various listed players in the scent, every one of them is well balanced on my skin, maybe the lily standing out a hair more than the other notes. This is very much a sum of its parts, very much a blend, and a perfume-y one at that. This could have come from a department store counter, and I might carry it around in a fancy handbag if I didn't leave the bottle on a mirrored tray on my dresser. It's nice and pretty but it feels more like I'm wearing a disguise than a scent that I connect with. I want to revisit this on a humid summer night, which alas my part of California doesn't get a lot of.

I agree/second the alma venus. that is sublime orange blossom. the bptp bo Time of Gold has some nice orange blossom as well.

I love the Marquis. I blind bought Adam expecting them to be similar, and they aren't are all to my nose. Both are extremely gorgeous, but in very different ways. Enjoy the marquis! I hope it scratches the leather itch.

I love this. I might break my no backups rule for this. warmth from the musk, sweetness from the amber, spicness from the carrot seed. this is rich and elegant, WITH GLITTER. it has that wonderful "bpal smell" that I adore. there is an effervescence, but it reminds me more of the mimosa note beth uses than of champagne.

crowley is a very sexy demon indeed!

Ligur and hastur from the good omens collection are based on demon characters and smell dark and smokey and rich and sinister.

I'm at a loss for helpful words with this one. it's very very pretty. yes, there are wood notes. nice and rich and polished. more cool than warm. yes, a touch of metal. yes, sublimely blended. the whole of the above is ultimately a fantastic cologne, one that gently wafts about filling the space around me and yet also delicious and detectable on the skin. I blind bought a bottle based on a rec from my decantress, who declared it her personal favorite after having spent time smelling and decanting the whole series, and I've no regrets. another top notch scent in an incredible series.

this is more of a scent experience to me than a perfume or cologne. it really does evoke the smell of airplane plastic at night when you're flying and most of your fellow passengers are either asleep or lost in their headphones. quiet, eery, alone. plastic trays and plates and cups and plastic seatbacks and overhead bins. plastic wrappers on the food. plastic laminate on the safety card. recycled air. fake material blankets. not things that I like, but yet I love that there is this perfume that evokes them so perfectly (personally not getting much blood). I never want to run out of this weird little creature, but think my imp might last for years, as a little does the trick and it's not something i reach for often. this isn't a scent that is easy to layer with other (i sense the celeriac note mentioned above more against other scents than when i wear this puppy solo.) I'm sad this isn't getting more love or appreciation. it's a strange and precious and rather curious thing. thanks for making and sharing this, Beth!

Century guild sells a bpal called when I that has smoke and oil notes although the actual perfume is soft and beautiful. Enterprise of the night from the kabuki line has a city smell to it.

I read the above reviews, with a few people complaining that this was too tobacco heavy, and as I LOVE tobacco, I ran and blind bought a bottle. well, the labbies responded to the above complainers, and what I received was very much heavy on the vanilla, and light on the tobacco (weep). it's nice, very similar to a lighter version of Boo Hg, actually, but much much lighter in throw. It's the only gloss I have tried that fades completely with an hour. this will be worn when I work my job that I can't go scent-heavy to.

picture books in winter and who in the world am I are comforting and grounding scents to me. also the phoenix, having burst her shell and relics of herself. warm scents with a lot of resins tend to be grounding for me. bright florals and sugary scents, not so grounding for me. too exciting haha.

this is some quality sauce. I have to confess I was a bit taken aback by how high and bright it is. with notes like leather and tobacco, I was thinking it would be dark and rich. nope! not on me! I received this as a frimp with my luper order, and tested it along some bright song of venus florals, and this was higher and sharper than all the white florals. it actually remindes me of a violin playing and holding higher notes, beautiful and slightly despondant. I'm excited to see how this scent will layer with the others in the series.

I'm coming through the end of a little winter cold, but on my skin this baby is mostly a dance of white chocolate, pomegranate and strawberry, with something dark and gritty...almost dirty that my nose can't quite place at the base. I'll retest and edit next week, when hopefully my sense of smell has returned in full force.

Rose Recommendations - which blend is for me?
annemathematics replied to Nadirah's topic in Recommendations
Saint foutin, a luper, reminds me very much of a more complex rose cross. Rose, frankincense, wine and wax, beautifully blended. I can smell the wine, but it's not at all a boozy scent. The wax also plays it cool, and that's a note that usually amps like woah on me.
