    Lilac!

I have a new lilac love. The Unicorn, Rushing Against the Tree, Fixed its Horn so Fast in the Trunk that it Could Not Draw it Out: Ethereal white orris, pale early lilacs, mallow flower, Queen of the Night, white moss, and dusk-lit mist. For some reason, the lilac lasts so long on my skin in this blend and it remains a star player from opening to drydown. Definitely back-up bottle worthy.

Who do I email with questions? BPAL/BPTP contact info

Hi Kiso, did you use the form on the site or a direct email address? The Post usually responds well within the time period you shared, so perhaps the email didn't get through. I would advise resending.

    The Forest Reverie

The Forest Reverie really does smell like an ancient forest wreathed in opium smoke. I smell green trees and grape vine, and touches of the wild roses and lilies. But mostly it's opium smoke and green grape leaves and pine. The opium runs a bit cologne-y on my skin and the greenery's a bit bitter, so the rose and lily helps to balance this out. It's really evocative. I think this might be great on my husband, so into his imp box it goes.

    Australian Sandalwood

I'm having a similar response as LizziesLuck, Australian Sandalwood is a cologne-y sandalwood on me, deep and rich and almost a little musky. I've worn it a few times and enjoy it each time, but like this best on my husband—on whom it smells AMAZING.

    Isidore’s Phoenix

The phoenix is a bird of Arabia, which gets its name from its purple color; or because it is singular and unique in the world and the Arabs call singular and unique phoenix. It lives for 500 years or more. When it sees that it has grown old it builds a pyre for itself from spices and twigs, and facing the rays of the rising sun ignites a fire and fans it with its wings, and rises again from its own ashes. Feathers of deep plum and wild violet darkly gleaming with myrrh, black amber, and benzoin. Mmm, Isidore's Phoenix is beautiful purpled incense on me, like a dusky wing. Wet, the plum and violet are more prominent, but once I apply and this settles in, I get a good balance between them and the warm myrrh, black amber, and benzoin. The violet is lovely here—not overpowering at all, well blended with the plum and bottom notes. This reminds me a bit of both Purple Phoenix (which shared notes of myrrh, plum, and violet) and Queen of Spades (which shared notes of black amber, myrrh, and plum). But Isidore's Phoenix is more straightforward than those blends in a way that suits it well. Looking forward to wearing this plummy violet gem over the winter months!

The Women's Song of Mourning Hair Gloss

Can the fire of the heart be extinguished in the flames of the funeral pile? Red sandalwood, black clove, fiery saffron, and honeyed amber. If the red sandalwood note in Crimson or Sinus Amoris is your happy place (as it is mine), you should try The Women's Song of Mourning! It's delectable here, and at least on me, makes this hair gloss smell like an early Lupercalia treat—red and sexy and decadent. The honeyed amber is married to the sandalwood very smoothly, and the clove and saffron are detectable but not overwhelming. I'm trying to write the review and I just want to huff my own hair...one of my favorite hair glosses of 2015, for sure!

    Ganymede

Ganymede is an icy lavender with touches of oudh on me, with an aquatic/slightly soapy edge. The metallic iron note isn's something I pick up when wet, but it comes forward as everything dries down. Normally I go for warmer blends, but I think this would make for a lovely post-nighttime summer shower blend; something to dot on before bed. The lavender makes this a great sleep blend for me, and the icy and metallic notes are cooling. The oudh is light—definitely there, but not overwhelming.

    Guatemalan Volcanic Coffee Bean

Wet, Guatemalan Volcanic Coffee Bean smells like an intense coffee liqueur, with a strong roasted note and some sweetness. On my skin, I also get some sub-notes like light almond/cherry and something rooty. As it dries, the intense coffee note burns off and it mellows until it smells almost like coffee with cream and sugar. A few hours later, I still get faint coffee and cream with sugar. It's unlikely that I'd reach for this to wear on its own, but I think it will be fun to layer this with other perfumes.

    Bulgarian Tobacco

Bulgarian Tobacco is delicious. This is gourmand tobacco on me, half chewy tobacco and half caramel and vanilla. One of my colleagues at work loves perfume, and when I was wearing this one afternoon, she asked me if I was wearing Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille. When I set her straight, she went right to her computer and ordered a bottle for herself. If this is drier and less sweet than French Tobacco for most people, I don't know if I would love that note better, since this already smells very sweet and lush to me. It's really viscous and thick, almost sticky like honey on the skin. It's honestly just heavenly.

    Hygeia

Hygeia is such a great red musk-centric perfume. The red amber and sweet incense are also central players on my skin, with the other notes much less prominent—although I do catch the Mysore sandalwood from time to time. The orris makes it a touch powdery on me, and it draws sweetness from the incense and helichrysum, but although it teeters on the edge of being a bit too sweet and powdery on me, it stays on the right side of that fence. I don't wear this too often, but when I do it always smells absolutely classic on me, like I've dipped into a perfume from the dressing table of some 1940s starlet.

Lilies & Lily of the Valley

Bumping to recommend The Mirror: White lilies gilded by sparkling grey amber, Oman frankincense, pink pepper, raw white clove, and white musk. It's such a beautiful blend on me, with lily, grey amber, and white musk the most prominent notes.

    The Mirror

I agree with z_z, The Mirror would be great gateway BPAL. The white lilies and grey amber and white musk are the most prominent notes on me, merging together to create a soft grey and white amber-musk-lily perfume that's smooth and refined. This smells like a perfume from the past, but not dated—classic. The frankincense, pink pepper, and white clove give depth and a bit of spice, but they don't intrude. Really beautiful.

    Vegetal, Vegetable Scents

    Beachy, Tropical Scents

Lizzie gave great suggestions—Lovers and a Fan is particularly lovely, if you're looking for something a little less layered. It's pretty wonderfully straightforward. There's also the Coconut, Vanilla Bean & Tiare hair gloss from the Post.
  20. Bumping this for those who were looking for Boomslang but had a hard time tracking some down in Sales/Swaps...the Snake Pit is back! This year's Boomslang retains what I loved about the original...it's like Snake Oil dipped in cocoa.

    Vetiver

Bumping this to say that I finally got to test Dark Chocolate, Black Tobacco, and Vetiver bonbon last night...wow. As noted above, vetiver is a note that can be overwhelming for me (even though I've found some scents over the years that contain it and are glorious on my skin). The vetiver in the bonbon is strong at first, but it pulls back pretty quickly and the scent ends up smells a bit like a really unique version of a 'tobacco vanille' perfume, with the vetiver lingering just enough to add something a bit bitter, green, and smoky (almost like a tea note on me). I bought this bottle for my husband but he'll probably need to share it with me. If you also like vetiver in moderate amounts, and you love chocolate and tobacco—I definitely recommend it!

    Senelion

Senelion has only gotten better with time. That Nepalese amber is almost buttery, the 'twin red musks' (!) are warm and gently animalistic, and the vegetal black musk is mineral-y and starchy in a way that's really satisfying. I pick up almost no lotus, but the star anise and orris and cedar I do get right out of the gate. The hops, mallow, chamomile, and zdravetz offer a sweet, tangy, and herbal tinge. Dry, this is a red musk blend with something earthy and herbal and sweet in its orbit. It smells different to me at different times of the month, and (appropriately) although it smells great every time I wear it, every once in a while it strikes me as stunningly gorgeous.

    The Great He-Goat

The Great He-Goat opens with a reallll strong vetiver note, wow. Serious vetiver! It takes about 20 minutes for it to fall back on my skin, while the Egyptian amber (yum), carnation, and black musk come forward. The pom, patchouli, and smoked ginger are harder for my nose to find, but this is rounded off in a nice way and I think I can smell the smoked ginger from time to time. It smells great on the drydown, but I'm not sure I can make it through the vetiver stage again. This will be great on my husband, who loves vetiver!

    Carceri d'Invenzione

Carceri d'Invenzione is sweeter than I imagined from the notes, although the blonde tobacco and frankincense might be contributing to that. Like others, I also get a fruity note that might just be the redwood and red sandalwood colliding. The black pepper has a light touch. On the drydown, this is a red sandalwood-dominant blend on my skin, with the blonde tobacco closely behind. On the whole, it's a tobacco and woods blend, with sweetness and resin underneath. At times, this actually reminds of Queen of Spades, although this is much lighter. It has the feel of a classic perfume.
  25. Mod Note: Rolled this into the existing thread. On topic: I loved Mount Fuji Reflected in Lake Misaica from last year's Shungas (An oakmoss chypre with black cypress, wild mint, labdanum, pine needles, white sandalwood, and white cedar.)
