  1. I think Count Dracula is the closest I've tried to clove cigarette smells. It's an explosion of of clove and cinnamon with dusty slightly smoky dry down. The Smiling Spider would be my second closest bet. Even though you don't like cinnamon, I think Count Dracula is more of a clove cigarette scent, while Smiling Spider is more of a clove scent. You might want to just give it a try if you get a chance sometime. Good Luck!

    Snake Oil

Fresh from the lab, Snake Oil smells exactly like Satyr + vanilla on me. Very musky, a wee bit resinous, and some sweet vanilla. Not exactly what I had expected. I also get a synthetic, plasticy smell at some points, that I think others have mentioned. I will definitely be keeping this to age, though, and I'll revisit it in a year or so.
  3. I'll be wearing Theodosius the Legerdemain...

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

Has anyone come across a BPAL scent that was similar to the old "Bone Daddy" fragrance that was sold at Hot Topic as part of their Nightmare Before Christmas stuff? Not long after I fell in love with it the formula and packaging were changed, and all the bottles up on ebay and that I can find are the new kind. I have no idea how to describe it, except it's dead sexy. I've been around BPAL for a while and I still have no idea what this is. Vetiver? musk? black amber????? My bottle is not quite uniformly rectangular, sorta slanted, clear frosted glass with a tubular brushed aluminum lid and the box it came in was like a squished and stretched cube, looked like a diamond from the top. I REALLY want to smell like this again. Help!

    Schwarzer Mond

At first, this almost completely myrrh and opoponax on me. Lots of strong resins with that cola/fruity note others get. I have no idea what it is, but it's like cherry coke or something, if cherry coke actually tasted at all like cherries. But basically, strong, peppery resins. As it dries down I get more of a sweet patchouli, not as earthy as other blends, but still definitely itself. The pimenta racemosa (bay rum) also starts to appear, giving a wonderful rounded spiciness to the back of the blend. The terebinth note is very interesting. The turpentineish astringent resin is present and gives a more woody scent to the blend. I also get the musky green sort of herbal zdravetz as well. The Tunisian black amber and night musk don't stand out to me, although I get some of the amber at the end of the dry down and can tell that the musk is there supporting things. This is a pretty awesome scent, but I don't know if I'll go searching it out since it's hard to get and I have so many others that are in a similar category. I like it a lot though, and it's not nearly as masculine as I had assumed it would be. I'll definitely keep my imp.

    Mr. Jacquel

In the bottle, and on first application, the patchouli, amber, and hyssop mix together to make a strong, almost biting resinous scent. Soon those wonderful embalming spices show up and remind me a lot of Eclipse. It dries down to something softer and more powdery than I had hoped for, but the initial scent is an amazing spicy ambery patchouli kick that I absolutely love. This is a wonderful exotic, sexy, eastern scent that would be good on anybody. The drydown may be a little too soft and feminine for me to wear often, but I still love it. This is a perfect incense-sex-spices scent. Amazing.

    Aries 2007

some how i got two decants of this. one smells like very spicy rubber bands at first. they both dry down to a similar blend of dragons blood, opoponax, and a bit of honeysuckle. quite nice.
  8. Yes. Count Dracula smells EXACTLY (well, almost) like clove cigarettes. It's got the clove, plus a bit of smokiness. I put it it on a jacket a while ago and when I pulled it out I thought it was the one I'd worn when I saw a friend who smoked tons of clove cigarettes. Plus, Count Dracula is an awesome scent period. After that, I'd try Three Witches. It was also heavy clove, but not as smoky.

    Midnight Mass

Wonderful. My ultimate resin blend. Beautiful mix of churchy resins with a woodsy drydown that reminds me of Miskatonic University (without the coffee of course.)

Shub-Niggurath Soap (by Silk Road Trading Company)

I still get little wafts of this throughout the day. I love the scent of course, and the soap is wonderful. Leaves me soft and smooth. Average amount of lather, and a good sized bar. It is disappearing quickly, although that's probably due to how much I love it. This is awesome and I can't wait to try the others. I'm especially stoked that it's all free trade and eco friendly!

    The Great He-Goat

On me, this is all vetiver and patchouli at first. Usually I either absolutely love vetiver or absolutely hate it, but this managed to be sorta in the middle. The musk and amber come out in the dry down to give it a little softness, and finally the ginger is evident as well. I was hoping for a big blast of ginger & darkness, but this ok. Not amazing, but it fits the artwork and I'll definitely be keeping my imp. And who knows, maybe it'll grow on me. ETA: Several months later, and I LOVE the great he goat. It has aged wonderfully, and is completely what I had hoped for it to be originally. Deep, earthy patchouli grounded by a bass note of that beautiful haitian vetiver. I had worried about the carnation, but I can't detect it at all. The black amber is wonderfully gleaming in that darkest of night way, and the black musk is able to present itself without turning to powder. The crown jewel of this scent is the smoked ginger. I don't even know what to say. It's smoked ginger. WHAT MORE COULD I WANT?????!?!?!?!? My favorite scent right now.

    Satyr

Soo good. Musky and sexy with a little spice. It didn't go cat pee on me, which is very good. I normally hate civet but this is amazing.
  13. Count Dracula is very clovey, you might try that.
  14. I find Umbra, Samhainophobia, and Schwarzer Mond to be the epitome of darkness. Not dark things, not gothic things, etc., but truly the darkest deepest black hole. haha. you get the picture. dark.

    Sweet dried grasses scents

    I would definitely recommend Scarecrow!

Spice me, baby! The spiciest BPAL blends

as far as spicy goes, i like count dracula and three witches. three witches is pretty mich just spice spice spice! but the count has a sweeter drydown. not sure if these are what you're after, but you might try em anyway. i also like eclipse, which is mainly sweet and warm but with a little touch of cinnamon, and i'll second al-shairan. good luck!

    King of Clubs

I LOVE this! so complex and so sexy.. this is earthy and deep, with the dark musk to make it sexy and and the fig keeps it from being too dark and scary. I love how well blended this is. I get more of an overall feel from this than I do specific notes. It's a deep, dark burgundy and I love it. This is too heavy and too sexy to be worn all day but I'll put it on when I go out at night. Cranberry was soooo nice as to give me an imp of this, and I fell in love so I promptly bought a bottle on ebay. I wish I had been around when this came out... edited cause I missed a word when i was typing fast. haha.

    Johnathan Harker

this is exactly what i was hoping for. a "respectable" blend. something i can wear to work or with family that isn't all sexy and wild. It's sorta fresh and bright smelling, but not so fresh and bright that I can't wear it in the fall and winter. I love it!
  19. The TAL oil Brass Balls might be good!

    Two Monsters

I was expecting to absolutely love this blend, it has all the notes I like (minus leather), and the art is awesome! but... it's got a little fruityness to it. that and leather = yuck. but still, i sorta like it... i really do love the other parts of it, and i wish this smelled like geek. it's not that i really dislike this, it's that i don't think i'd wear it often. i think it does represent the painting well, but in a different way than i would have expected. sort of like somebody said before, this reminds me of the inside of a new car with leather seats and one of those little cans of nasty fruity car deodorizer stuff. i don't think this one's for me.

    Count Dracula

This is not at all what I was expecting. I was a little worried it would turn all leather, but instead, its all fire! All im getting is clove, cinnamon, and ginger with a tiny hint of sweetness barely making it in. I'm pleasantly surprised, although I'm not sure this is something I could wear. It becomes less fiery as time goes by, but i'm still unsure about this one. I love it though. It's really an amazing scent. Perfect for Hallowe'en! ETA: okay. now I smell the black musk and the spicyness has gone away. But now it's too light. maybe these things will amp up with age? hopefully. I would really like to get that middle ground between the sweet + musky and the fiery + sharp. added Nov. 20: mmm. this is wonderful. at first it's completely spicy explosion of cinnamon, clove, and ginger, but then it dries down to a wonderful sweet smell, but still a bit spicy. I love it! It's a great fall scent and just wonderful period. This really fits the Count! added March 1: this is one of my favorite scents. It smells exactly how clove cigarettes should smell, but don't. It's clovey and spicy with some smokiness. I'm so glad i bought a bottle of this. The perfect me in a bad mood or feeling dark scent. I get lots of compliments too.

    Theodosius, The Legerdemain

Theodosius to me is a manlier version of Dorian, because it's lighter on the vanilla and has more fougere and spice. Unfortunately, I don't like the smell of fougere. Also, I smell less tea in this than I had hoped for. Overall though, this is a Dorian that a guy could wear without the fear of any girlyness. I already wear Dorian though, so I think this is good but I won't be buying more when my bottle runs out. I don't get much of the jasmine, and none of the lemon that people say they smell. The musk and vanilla bean make this nice and sexy, but strong and dark.

    Doc Constantine (2006)

hmmm. I'm not sure about this one. I just got my imp of this, and I'm still waiting on the bottle. now i'm wishing I hadn't been so rash. I mainly get the cedar and fir, which is good becuase I'm not really a leather sort of guy. But it's also not so good becuase I really am a musk and amber sort of guy. This sort of reminds me of my Grandma's house - a Christmas tree, smoke, old leather jackets and her perfume? maybe. It's getting better as time goes by, but I think when my bottle arrives it's probably going to go off to swaps. I'll keep my imp though becuase I really enjoy this scent, but it's just not me. It reminds me too much of my uncle. I like him, but I'm not him. He wears leather jackets and listens to Motley Crue. I wear pea coats and listen to XLooking ForwardX. This reminds me of a person in their 30's or 40's trying to be cool. Maybe I'll wear it in 10-20 years.
