i think narcissus winds up smelling almost like jasmine on me... and i don't care for jasmine. the myrrh is lovely, and the opium adds intrigue and depth.... but i just can't get past the almost-jasmine. byebye bottle, hopefully you'll find a better home!

Midnight on the Midway (2006)
TrailerTrashPrincess replied to GypsyRoseRed's topic in Carnaval Diabolique
hmmm... so far the Carnival is turning out to be verrrry different from what i had expected. i thought this would be THE bottle but... nope. not so far. sniffed from the bottle: commercial air freshener skinsniff, wet: traditional floral blend skinsniff, dry: very expensive triple-milled soap and very expensive hand-rolled incense. so i guess this is what a rich hippie smells like? i really like it, don't get me wrong, but it isn't anything at all like what i expected... i think i'll put some more of this on right before i go to sleep and see what happens -
first let me say : i hate jasmine. haaaate. and i don't much care for lemon, although i tolerate it in Dorian. this is all the things i love about Dorian without any of the things i don't like. and then some more yumminess thrown in for good measure. ---------- the above is my original review of this scent. i still like it, don't get me wrong, but either as it ages it is doing something new... or it doesn't work as well with my skin chemistry anymore, because the last few times i wore it..... after a while it stopped being the lovely slightly-more-masculine Dorian that i loved, and starts having a very.....jarring metallic or rubbery scent mixed in. like it should be in the steamworks category, almost. that being said, it still smells fantastic on my husband, and i can't tell that it smells different on him than it used to. so i'm thinking the problem is with me, and not the oil. which makes me very sad.

as much as i *heart* dark chocolate (dark bittersweet bakers' chocolate, specifically) i was sooo hoping for something along those lines. verging on the bitter. but no. all i get is the cream. which wouldn't be so bad except i think it has the same vanilla-goes-to-plastic type note in it as some other blends. after about eight hours it dries down to Coty's "Dark Vanilla" which is nice, but i'm not sure it is worth the wait. i'll put it away for awhile and see what happens. quick edit, just to add: if you're like me and like to layer scents with soaps and lotions and such, to add to the staying power... you might want to get a lotion in Heaven & Earth's Signature Scent, which is like a dark-chocolate-vanilla-gasm... and layers quite nicely with the Candy Butcher. the lotion's scent is simple, so it doesn't interfere with the BPAL but it adds some depth and gives a nice scented base. *siGh* i so wanted to love this... i adore dark musks but amber mostly hates me and thinks i should reek of powder. strangely, this somewhat-aged bottle smells rather of Snake Oil without some of the spices, more than anything else. doesn't really work on me. i guess it'll need to find another new home

after reading the description of this... i knew i had to try it. although i probably shouldn't have... because now i love it. the scent doesn't seem to change much on me from imp/sniffy to hours later... i keep getting the feeling that this is a mixture of Yankee Candle "Storm Watch" and BPAL's Storm Moon. with just the slightest hint of a "mountain fresh" liquid fabric softener. if i'd let myself love this, i would. but it is just too rare... i'll settle for liking it and using it just enough to use up this bottle in a reasonable timeframe

sniffed from the bottle: smells like the aisle of the craft store where all the dried & artificial flowers are. skinsniff, wet: papery-gingery dried flowers skinsniff, dry: irish spring soap --the blue and white bar, not the green and white one. not at all what i was expecting. editing to add: i don't *dislike* this by any means. it simply isn't what i expected. i have no intention of selling the bottle!

so in the bottle and on my skin at first... it smells like a mix of Dorian, Evening Star, House of Mirrors, Spirits of the Dead and just the eensiest bit of margarita or Absinthe... some light floral/glass notes a little less fabric softener-y than Dirty, but a clean-happy-fresh scent. i put it on a couple hours before i went to work, and it lasted all through an 8 hour shift and then some. i finally figured out why it smelled familiar after about twelve hours, right before i washed it off.... i can't remember who made it but it might've been AirWick? anyway, a spray air freshener that i bought about two years ago -- it was in a matte silver "can" with a little round picture on it... it may've been "clean linen" or something like that... i'll see if i can't dig one up. anyway, after about 12 hours, that's what this wound up smelling like on me. nice and clean but still... air freshener. so i'll just hafta remember to refresh the oil after about eight hours before that comes back.
-
hm... my initial reaction is that this is a combination of Tombstone and Snake Oil... but as it dries down it becomes Dead Man's Hand and a freshly sharpened pencil. there's some dark amber in there keeping things yummier but... well, i'll wait and see how this is on the boi.

i get the white tea-vanilla-honeydew... and the hint of oakmoss & sunflower petals in there somewhere. i can't tell if it is the peach blossom or the lychee turning vaguely mango on me, but if i could take out whatever note(s) that is... this would be SOoOoooo yum. as it is, i'm glad i have an imp, but it'll do me [= .... to note, Panera Bread has a drink that's honeydew and green tea with *something* else that i can't remember right now (comes with a straw as big around as a penny, its nuts, but its the only way to get the "chunks' of honeydew...) anyway, i smell like that drink tastes.

i feel like i'm just repeating what others have said here... it seems like most folks either love this scent, or it reminds them of .... well, an older matronly type lady. i fall into the second group. in another 70 years, i would probably take it as comliment if i smelled like that and someone told me i smelled lovely. powdery and violets and some roses and, well, *aged* ... like a fine wine, and not like, say, a pumpkin that is past prime. (ewwww) a lovely blend, i'm sure, on the right chemistry. however, that is not me. so i'm happy this imp is going to live with someone who will hopefully appreciate it more [=

oh this is yum. dark amber (no baby powder!), deep musk, bergamot, sandalwood... not really all too masculine, to my nose/skin, but very resiny/incense-y. and would probably work on either a man or a woman -- but not *every* man or woman. something about it sortof reminds me of Snake Oil / Snake Charmer.

not reviewing for VooDoo usefulness, only for scent: Blood Pearl with a healthy dollop of Dragon's Blood

oh, this is so yummy! this is everything i loved about Obsession for Men and Halston Z-14, all mixed together with none of the alcohol or chemical-ick. the boy's still asleep, i think i'll go drizzle him with this and see what happens

A scent as heavy as thunder from the Vatican, with notes that inspire every sin and excess. Black opium, with vetivert and honeysuckle. Jasmine and Vetiver. not for me.
-
i have a fabulously aged bottle of this and the scent has changed in interesting ways - it has become Dried Apples and Juniper Breeze. a lovely, gorgeous scent that i find myself reaching for when i'm not sure what i wanna wear.

this is SO YUMMY -- i wish i had more than one bottle! [= it falls smack dab between U.nderpants & G.luttony on one side and M.idway and Misk U on the other.... Misk U with caramel instead of coffee and U.nderpants with a little something extra in it... (Underpants did NOT work on me. at all.)

this reminds me strangely of a cross between Gloria Vanderbilt (i probably misspelled that.)'s perfume from the early 80's and Diane Von Furstenburg's perfume Tatiana. i know the smell of blackberries (this is Georgia... they're *everywhere*) and i know the smell of heather... and what i get from this oil is neither. lovely, which is why i had to buy a bottle, but ..... i'm not sure how to describe it. rather like the drydown phase of Nosferatu or like Sudha Segara were it a little floral-ier

impsniff: smells like every other lavender-based "helps you sleep" blend i've ever encountered skinsniff, wet: lavender and lotus skinsniff, dry: generic potpourri sort of smell. vaguely cinnamon-ish.
-
impsniff: sugarfree watermelon bubblegum skinsniff, wet: ugh, oh you don't wanna know what this makes me think of skinsniff, dry: watermelon bubblegum and .... a bad, unclean nursing home oh, yuck, i have to go scrub this off now.

it was holiday tradition for many years for me and my daddy to go out around the beginning of December to the middle of the woods or out in the middle of nowhere and...um. shoot down some mistletoe. because it grows the thickest, prettiest leaves in the toptoptop of really tall, old trees... and, well, it was target practice and holiday decorating all in one (yes, i'm just *that* classy, can't you tell?) anyway, i don't recall mistletoe smelling anything like this... i got this bottle today and dabbed a little on the top of my hand... and smelled like a christmas tree. evergreen spray air freshener. i kinda felt like i should be a tree-shaped air freshener. i guess i'll keep this til the holidays and pour it in an oil burner.

end verdict: i like this blend. how i arrived at that conclusion ... well, i can't begin to describe the scent. there's tobacco, yes. and a touch of clove. but this also feels like a forbidden scent, like an incense reserved for certain rituals (or occasions) and not for everyday.... almost as if to wear this as a mundane everyday scent would be blasphemous.

imagine this, if you will. take a grapefruit. dehydrate it. (*slaps arms crossed in front of chest Jeannie-style, blinks real hard {*broink*} and ponytail flips*) now stick it on a bed of charcoal like you'd use to burn powder incense. that's what this smells like, to me: burned grapefruit.
-
this blend has many things i love: moonflower, ylang ylang and lily. a few things i hate: Night-blooming jasmine and a few things i'm meh about: cardamom, sandalwood, black currant, frankincense and what one note does my skin pick out and amp up: Jasmine.

one of the first BPAL dragon's blood - based scents that actually works on me and doesn't smell of tylenol! it must be the musk that makes it be *okay* i can't tell if this is a white musk or a black musk, though, strangely.... ADDED 12/12/08: in sorting through my Ars Draconis imps, i realised i had a Dragon's Musk mixed in with the Dragon's Milk! so i tried it, 'cuz i knew i hadn't.... and omg, yum! its like Dragon's Milk and Smut. not bottle worthy, but i'll happily finish out this imp!
