  1. I'm a sucker for vanilla scents, I'll admit but there is always that line drawn for me between just right and too sweet. This starts out just a bit too sweet on me but then the lily (and possibly the moss, orris and ambergis) starts to emerge it becomes a really beautiful balance of soft green and creamy vanilla. I didn't get the sandalwood or the musk at all but I think it was what was holding this blend just on the brink of being too sweet.

I'm not sure if this is one I'll want more of but I'm keeping it for now for further tests because it's just so darn lovely.

  2. I have to second Red Lantern!!! It's my favorite and I adore vintagey perfumes.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this but I wanted to add Penny Dreadful! You know, if you wanted that macabre twist. :P No, truthfully its very vintage and the earthiness of the grave loam doesn't detract from that.

Someone else mentioned Stardust and even though its supposed to evoke the 70s, its still very vintage. It reminds me of a Saint Laurent fragrance my mom wears.

Please keep us updated on what you finally choose and how it goes!!

why yes I'm hopelessly single....why do you ask? :D

  3. Alice is a creamy rose, but the carnation gives it a hint of spice, too.

Euphrosyne reads as a really green rose to me, but it is sweet, too.

Finally, Moon Rose is really lovely, and I know someone mentioned it upthread.

I forget that Alice has rose in it....maybe because it blends so well on me. I second Alice, it's gorgeous and very subtle.

I second Whip too. The rose in it is very pink and fresh which gives an interesting contrast to the leather! :P

Edited: because someone else DID mention Whip already and I'm a dork! :D

  4. Red Lantern for Christmas Eve because its lovely and rich. Lick It Again (naturally) for Christmas morning and dinner. Thinking back I should have worn Mum Moon to dinner just because its so pretty but it really doesn't matter now.

For New Years (not that I plan to do anything) I'm probably wearing Stardust or TAL Milk and Honey for a bit of new year's hope.

  5. This is what I was hoping Namaste would smell like, light lemon layered over a rich wood base. It's the smell of wealth and sophistication. This is very light and I think it would be perfect for the hot summer months. As it dries, it gets spicier and more refined. I really really like this and I didn't even expect to! I'll add this to my bottle list for this summer.

  6. At first sniff, I thought that this was WAY too rose for me BUT after wearing it and giving it a chance I began to really love it. The rose tamed a bit and something lovely and green emerged. It was still ROSE but not your grandmother's rose. It was a gorgeous, sexy, and definitely haughty red rose. I love this very much and it lasts like no other rose I've tried.

  7. This smells EXACTLY like it is described and as I hoped it would! This was one that I wanted because of the name and was lucky enough to love it too. Rich upturned earth and that classic perfume that your great grandmother wore when she was young. Gorgeous! I must have a bottle.

  8. I just obtained a bottle of Numb during a meet n sniff, thank you Nachtwulf! At first sniff, I was intrigued and then I found out about it's reputation. I have a thing for the underdog so I had to have it. It's very violety but not so much that it gives me a headache and it doesn't give me visions of my grama's potpourri box. It's actually quite nice and powdery on me. It has excellent throw which is good because that is rare for me. It's a bit sharp close to my skin but I can forgive because I don't need to bury my nose in my wrist to smell it. Definitely a good winter or middle of summer scent. :P

  9. I thought there was no way this would smell good on me. People were comparing it to Snake Oil and Smut (both of which hated me) but I got myself an imp so that I could try. I am SO glad that I did! It's amazing! In the bottle, I swear it smells just like Voodoo. I second the Dr. Pepper thing because that's exactly what it smells like to me. Fortunately, on me, it doesn't stay that way. Wet on I got a lot of spice and definitely red musk with just a touch of patchouli. As it dries, the spices mellow and the vanilla emerges along with what I swear is sandalwood...although I've been known to smell sandalwood all over the place whether its actually there or not. It's in the background but it's the same note that I love in Underpants. I don't get any of the fruit, which is a blessing for me since we don't get along at all.

Conclusion: I LOVE this. It's not as long lasting as I had hoped but it's amazing and I can always apply. I'm going to need a couple of bottles. This is also the first CD scent that has truly worked. Hurray! :P

  10. Thanks ivyandpeony for merging the threads. :P

new to BPAL, have one TAL on the way, but trying to narrow down what scents to try first.

Sun in Taurus, Moon in Libra • Ascendant in Virgo, Mercury in the Ninth House • Moon in the Second House • Sun in the Tenth House • Venus in the Tenth House • Saturn in the Twelfth House

I LOVE spicy scents and orientals, not a big fan of florals and overly sweet scents

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

I think we're still trying to determine whether scents can be related to our signs but you might want to try Shub-Niggurath in the Springtime in Arkham series. It's spicy!

  11. Oh God Yes

So yeah I obviously like it so I'll try to be a bit more articulate on the subject. I raced home because I knew it was waiting for me in my mailbox and immediately opened it. First sniff was pure peppermint candy. Yum so far! On, the peppermint mellowed slightly and gave way to the sugary goodness underneath. Amazingly it then turned into Underpants! Musky, sexy sandalwood with a generous smear of frosting. At first I thought it was just me (13 did the same thing) but it seems I'm not the only one! Could there be a bit of sandalwood hidden in this blend? So yes, on my wrists it's now almost completely Underpants with just a tiny jolt of mint. I tried it all over (because yay I loved it) and I'm getting way different reactions in different areas. All of them are tingling but some areas (like the crook of my arm and boobs) are holding the mint while others are definitely Underpants. So awesome!

What an amazing scent! And I'm also having to hold myself back from licking. Bad Jessie!

Thank you to the lab for this one! I will be stocking up before they disappear for sure. :P

  12. I've never reviewed this!? Horrors! Loviatar is one of my favorite scents and probably the one BPAL that has completely thrown me and made into the devoted fanatic that I am today. So here, in honor of finally acquiring a bottle, is my review.

I'm a vegetarian and I try my darndest to avoid leather and other animal goods but damn if I don't love the smell of leather....particularly Beth's leather blend. Fortunately for me, it is cleverly manufactured so there is no guilt. I tried Loviatar originally because a) leather and b ) someone referred to it as being a dominatrix scent. Awesome! I thought it would be a bit dark but it was perfect. Deep and full bodied myrrh and musk with a sharp hint of leather. And it smelled delicious on too. It just melts right into my skin and takes up residence like it's meant to be there. I've read a lot of reviews where people call it masculine, and I can totally see that, but on me it's very feminine although I can't really tell you why. I think it's just because it makes me feel sexy.

It has fantastic throw and lasts nearly all day. I can still pick up faint whiffs on my wrists by the end of a long workday and that is saying a lot!

I'm thoroughly delighted to finally have a bottle so that I can indulge in full body slathering!! Yay! :P

  13. In the bottle it smelled like cocoa with just a hint of citrus and a bit of smoke.

On wet, I got chocolate with maybe a tiny bit of the citrus but with lavender starting to take over. As it dried, the lavender became stronger until that was all I could detect beneath the chocolate. Oooh chocolate covered lavender! Not bad at all.

After completely drying it turned into Underpants until it faded away! I love it but it's a bit masculine for me. I'm wondering if it might not be pretty darn heavenly on a man. I'll have to find one to spill it on.....

In the meantime, I'll try it again because I really want to like it on me and I want it to last longer than a half hour!

  14. Jessie, here's the thread about astrological signs and favorite scents. It's in BPAL Chatter, not Recs, although it did pop right up with a search of the whole forum for "sign."

I remember putting some thought into this topic (I may or may not have posted, I don't recall) - I'm a Virgo, so you'd think I'd love earthy stuff. But it took me forever to develop an appreciation for patchouli and there are only one or two blends that I like that have Beth's "soil" note in them. I do love patchouli and resins now, but until BPAL I was all about light musk and girly florals. And one of my best BPAL buddies is also a Virgo, but there are tons of blends that she loves that smell anywhere from unremarkable to downright nasty on me, and vice versa.

Personally, I think that planetary influences are either far enough removed from us physically or not concerned with such minute detail that they aren't going to affect our scent preferences or the notes that work on us. Every birth chart is going to be unique (until you meet that person who was born at the exact same minute as you in the same hospital as you, of course :P ), which illustrates the many, many elements that make you the unique Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, etc that you are. So it seems to me that identifying just one scent family or group of notes for each sign, and expecting everyone born under that sign to like it, would be impossible.

Thanks ivyandpeony! That's exactly the thread I was talking about. Does this need to be moved then?

I disagree that scent preference is a minute detail. I consider my sense of smell to be one of my most important senses and I think the effect it has on us is very interesting. I think what I'm looking for is a more general attraction to elements rather than specific scents, totally irrelevant of skin chemistry. A lot of what we like/dislike is shaped by our experiences and genetic makeup but the same can be said for our personalities. Wouldn't it then also be possible that our birth chart could also give clues to what our noses would like? I'm not saying that everyone born under say, Cancer should be expected to like foodie scents but it would be safe to say that Cancers (in general) would be more attracted to comforting scents that remind them of familar things. That's what I'm trying to get.

What I'm looking for in reference to this particular Gemini is an idea of what would catch his eye (or nose in this case). For instance, if he was a more romantic type I'd go for a more traditional, floral, feminine blend. Since it seems Geminis like change and variety, I should probably go a bit more unconventional and change it up whenever I can.

  15. I am a Leo and I can't believe all the Leos haven't come rampaging over yet, to carry out about being a sun sign. What, Leos, carrying on about themselves? ;)

Anyway, on others, I tend to like dark, earthy scents (vetiver, patchouli), leather, tobacco, chocolate and musk. I also like vanilla. And some green scents, but moreso when they are combined with earthy scents. Generally, really warm-to-hot scents, like cinnamon and ginger aren't my favorites unless they're mellowed with something. I think it depends on how much fire is in your sun sign person, but the really "hot" scents tend to make me wince. I'm not big on aquatics, on me or anyone else.

    :P :D

ya know ms. valentina the scents you just described in the first part of your post are the darker, evil gem twin that lurks inside me...

but i do adore "hot'n'spicy" scents as well...and certain deep, dark aquatics are my

friend too...that is my "other side"...cuz we are all about the duality baby...

    duality :D :)

Ooh good to know! You know it's interesting because I like the darker blends too but I'm pretty typical Cancer. Although I think that ties in with my moodiness because I also like light, sweet scents. On others I tend to like complex blends with vanilla-especially on guys!

  16. I'm a Cancer (an uber-Cancer, in fact), and I can't deal with aquatics (headaches), I'm not much for foody scents for the most part.

I think so much of this is skin chemistry and associations (he might, hypothetically, love or hate jasmine because of a memory of someone who wore it) that astrology (and I am an astro-head) is just not something I will take into account on this topic.

I think you're definitely right about skin chemistry and associations but I just wanted to get a general feel for what a Gemini would hypothetically be attracted to. And in more of a theoretical way for example; would a Leo be attracted to more dominant scents because of that personality trait? Or would it be an opposite reaction because they don't like competition.

What scents do you tend to like? And actually many acquatics give me a headache too....it's only Beth's blends that I can handle.

  17. Hey everyone! I thought I saw a similar thread awhile back but now I can't find it so....mods, if there is one please let me know and all that. :P

I'm interested in scent recommendations specifically for attracting a Gemini but I'm also interested in what you all think about scent preference relating to your sun sign. For example I'm a Cancer and I tend to like warm comforting scents, watery blends and scents that remind me something I like; places, foods, etc....... So for me there seems to be a correlation. Thoughts?

  18. In the bottle: Sharp rose and something else sweet. I assume this is the honey but I hadn't read the description when I first tested it.

First on: ROSES!! Much rose but not overwhelmingly so. Unfortunately there was something sour there too. I almost washed it off at that point but I'm glad I didn't because then it turned powdery.

Dry down: The powdery rose smell is still there but now it's starting to smell like my beloved Alice but with roses and less milk. I'm not getting the sandalwood at all which is so odd because normally it either HATES me or (very rarely) it loves me.

Conclusion: It's not spectacular and it smells quite a lot like Alice but it's a nice soft, alluring scent. And who wouldn't want to wear a scent called Jezebel?! It makes me feel seductive! I will definitely try this one again. :P
