It sounds like you are already onto Dirty. Besides that, I really, really recommend that you try Wensleydale.

I think Moon Rose is a good match for Luna. -
Similarities Between BPAL Scents - GC and general discussion
Mrs.Black replied to Shollin's topic in Recommendations
There are two scents that I find very similar to Sea of Glass, but unfortuntely there were both LEs. You may be able to find them on the Swaps section, though. - House of Mirrors (Carnaval Noir LE) - Archangel Winter (Yule 2007 LE) -

On Thursday I'm going to the premiere of The Half Blood Prince here in Perth, and I will be upholding my tradition of wearing Trick or Treat to Harry Potter movies. To me, Trick or Treat is how I imagine the Great Hall of Hogwarts would smell during Halloween celebrations. -

Crooshanks -- Hellcat, Cheshire Cat or something furry like Ivanushka (although that was a Lunacy LE) Thestrals -- I would combine Gunpowder (last year's Halloween LE from the Sleepy Hollow series) with something dry and bony from Ars Moriendi, like Shroud (unfortunately discontinued), or Bony Moon if you can find it. Sorry, that wasn't very helpful as they are all hard to find scents. The Mirror of Erised -- The perfect scent for this, IMO, is House of Mirrors. Unfortunately that was a Carnaval Noir LE, but it may be possible to find it. Very similar to it was the more recent Yule LE Archangel Winter. Failing that, a good GC alternative would be Sea of Glass. -

Good choice. Especially the wet leather. I always picture Greyback wet for some reason-- all matted and drippy. Is that weird? I'm always tempted to suggest Fenris Wolf for Fenrir Greyback because, well, that's the mythology Fenrir's name comes from! But it's actually not a very good scent description of him and it's understandable that most people assign it to Lupin. I must say that I stick by the dichotomy of Wolfsbane and Fenris Wolf, respectively, for the human and wolf personae of Remus. How about Loup Garou for Fenrir Greyback? "The wild, untamed essence of lycanthropy. Primeval in its raw power and insatiable hunger: juniper, cypress and galangal with the barest touch of eucalyptus". I haven't actually tried Loup Garou, but it sounds appropriately menacing. But of course, the luckiest of all Harry Potter characters, BPAL-wise, is Fawkes! He definitely has a scent for every mood in the BPAL arsenal: Black Phoenix Red Phoenix Pink Phoenix Green Phoenix Blood Phoenix The Phoenix White Phoenix Purple Phoenix Wood Phoenix Water Phoenix Fire Phoenix Earth Phoenix Metal Phoenix Candy Phoenix Mechanical Phoenix Unfortunately only Black Phoenix is GC and currently available. -

Oh yes - wool robes! He may wear leather boots, but the robes (and the way they would hold the scent of the lab) would be so much of it. (the leather is just in my dreams) (omg, did I say that out loud?) Heeeeeee! Juni, I'm glad you showed up in this thread, because I was about to point you in this direction otherwise. Hmm, I wouldn't have thought of Aziraphale for Severus, but now I realize that I might have overlooked it in favor of "darker" scents. (Winter of Our Discontent definitely makes me think of him.) But the wood, dust and books are very him... layer it with a red wine scent, and that sounds like Spinner's End, doesn't it? And yeah, I think leather scents are more for Lucius than Severus. He's a wool sort of guy. So maybe he smells like the perfect schoolmaster scent, Ichabod Crane: Dusty black wool, tea with cream, black pepper, muguet, and beeswax candle drippings. It even has the candle wax and tea! That sounds nice indeed... even if I'm not a fan of muguet... Is it a LE? I just see Umbridge as more of a candy type... evil-sickly-pungent candy... Sticky Pillowcase, then? -

WIN. So very full of win. There is no other way to respond to your suggestion. And yes, I am a Remus Lupin fangirl. And I am Mrs.Black! Glad I could help. ETA: To me, Dumbledore smells naturally like Aureus, and Lucius and Draco Malfoy share a bottle of Whitechapel. Tom Riddle gives off a strong whiff of A Countenance Foreboding Evil. Later, as Lord Voldemort, he smells like Fallen. Professor Sybill Trelawney wears, of course, Madame Moriarty, Misfortune Teller as her signature scent. Oh, and Hermione switches between Arcana and a fresh Muggle cologne. -

Oh, forgot to say: Sirius Black's scent would definitely be Magus. And Remus's, Wolfsbane. For his human self, anyway. For his wolf self... Fenris Wolf. (I'm not just thinking of the names, I do think these scents would fit the characters). Alternatively, you could slather Sirius and Remus in Crowley and Aziraphale, respectively. And I've always thought of Shroud and Danse Macabre as Dementors' scents. -

For fresh-out-of-the-shower Snape, I would combine De Sade and Dirty. Or (flogging a dead horse here ) just Severin. -

All Severus Snape's fans out there would do well getting... Severin. The leather note in it is the same as the one in De Sade, for that indispensable sadistic twist, and the Earl Grey tea adds the English flare and bittersweet quality befitting the character. For those in the northern hemisphere, it's also a perfect summer scent: crisp, elegant and refreshing. Plus the name is definitely close enough! -
Some are different, like others are saying. The Rapaccini's Garden ones, for example, have botanical drawings on them, and the Panacea scents have a label with a heart and triple dagger motive.

As soon as I saw those pictures of the Warrior Queens, I rushed to order the only set I hadn't ordered before (Boadicea -- scared of the vetiver). With a collection this gorgeous, I feel like I got to have them all. So thanks Angelicruin for posting the pictures, and also for your reviews of the Boadicea set where you assure us that the vetiver in Boadicea is not really prominent.

Where is my order? What is Click N Ship? How long does this take?

Forest & Woods Scents (with and without evergreens)
Mrs.Black replied to omly's topic in Recommendations
Hi! Welcome to BPAL! If I were you, I would begin by ordering imps of Incantation, Magus and Black Forest. They are the three winner "walk in the woods" scents in BPAL's general collection, IMO. There have also been a few limited edition scents on this theme. You may want to try Chant d'Automne, October, Samhain, and November. Because these scents were Halloween LE's and are no longer available from the Lab you would have to post in the Wanted section of the forum to see if any forumites have decants for sale. One more LE you should try is Hexennacht. There have been two different incarnations of this scent, one in 2005 and another in 2008. The first had a strong bonfire element; the second was more fresh woods. -
I think a partial order on the Paypal comment field could be confusing, even if the complete one follows by email. I would just write "order to follow in email" and then make sure that you reference the Paypal order number when you write the email.

Rose Recommendations - which blend is for me?
Mrs.Black replied to Nadirah's topic in Recommendations
Actually, Faith is the violet twin; if you are looking for rose you need to get Hope. I recommend you try London, which to me is a very pure and beautiful tea rose, and also The Rose, although I see slightly more potential for soapines or sharpness with that one. ETA: Also, seconding Moon Rose, which is in my BPAL top five, although you have to like moonflower as it's very present with the rose. -

Have you tried Whip? That's the 'darkest' rose scent I've found... Also, Spellbound -
Rose Recommendations - which blend is for me?
Mrs.Black replied to Nadirah's topic in Recommendations
My recommendations would be The Rose (GC) and London (GC). The latter is more the tea rose variety. I also strongly recommend Moon Rose, although this is not pure rose, it's coupled with moonflower. If you want a snowy rose, I would layer one of the rose soliflores with Kumari Kandam (GC), Snow Flakes (LE) or L'Inverno (LE). -
If he likes Miskatonic University, you should definitely track down El Dia de Reyes.
-
My understanding is that pretty much any smell can be replicated with mixtures or "bouquets" of natural oils. Also many naturally occurring scents, such as fruits, cannot be extracted for use in perfume notes, so they must also be created as "bouquets" from other scents. I wouldn't assume that every unusual note in BPAL perfumes comes from synthetic sources.

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?
Mrs.Black replied to Absinthe's topic in Recommendations
First of all, many thanks to the lovely ivyandpeony for the labor of love of compiling all the recs from this thread in list form. ivyandpeony = I recently got my order including a few Marchen bottles (mostly the ones named after female characters) and was struck by the similarity between The Miller's Daughter and Hay Moon. They are so similar that I need to decide which one I like most and get rid of the other! The Miller's Daughter has a slightly more feminine feel but, if you are missing Hay Moon, this is the one to get.
