Lush to BPAL scent comparisons (BNever included too)
smallvoice replied to Vanilla's topic in Recommendations
I was recently able to try a lush product in "It's a Date", and I did a search on here, but there's nothing really conclusive about it. (Plus, I got every single post with a direct quote in it, because those always list the date in bbcode.) So does anybody know anything similar to this lovely, lovely scent? -

On me, this is pretty much what Skye said (Patchouli and cedar), and I'd also like to echo the herbal poultice reference GA made above, oddly enough. It is strikingly masculine, and not a bit sweet, nor is it hazelnutty- pencil shavings in a headshop. The patchouli gets stronger as it dries. Yeah, this one is NOT a hit with me. I'm glad I got to try it, or I would've wondered endlessly if I might've loved it. I have to say, though, this one is unique among the Monster Bait line, somehow. Does anybody else get that? It's not quite the same, somehow.

Yemaya smells like honeydew bubble tea. There's even that slightly soapy undertone that they all seem to get at my local bubble tea vendor. It is melon, melon, melon! Watermelon begins to appear, and then... there's this oddly sharp and heavy floral that I'm wondering if it might be the sea mosses and the aquatic note respectively. It does smooth out but I never quite get back to that beautiful melony scent. As for the grape? It blends well with the melon. I love the fruits in this!

Why waste time chanting her name in the mirror 13 times? Bedevil your next slumber party the easy way! Chunky, glistening red fruits with sweet cream accord, black clotted cherry, and powdered sugar! Bloody Mary is sharp and medicinal, and there is some common thread with previous Monster Baits, linking the collection together. It actually reminds me a lot of Closet, which was nauseating on my skin. After about 15 minutes, she starts to smooth out and I'm getting a bit of the fruity candy that other people seem to be getting. Hopefully as it rests on my skin, it will continue to mellow and become lovely. As of now, I'm not sure what the fate of my bottle will be. Oh, and I must add my admiration for the label- that is wicked! I love it. ETA: Description, and also these remarks: I had my husband sniff my hand shortly after I wrote this and he said it was nice, but it came off as a sort of generalized perfume scent to him, which makes me wonder if it's just me with the sharp and medicinal. Then, several hours later, I sniff again, and the drydown is... I don't know. Sort of barren? Like a load of powdered sugar over... wait for it, folks... the way Underpants smells to me in the bottle. I wish I could describe it better, heh. I actually quite like it, but I'm not sure I want to wait that long for it to take to my skin.

I got lilacs out of Eos, though it's not listed as a component. It's been a while since I've had an imp to sniff, though, so it could just be the honeysuckle fooling my nose.

Lionheart might also be a good one! -

A lot of this depends on what makes you feel the best. Boomslang is my go-to scent for good throw and a lovely scent that makes me happy. The Snake Oil in it adds power and the chocolate coating adds warmth. Et Lux Fuit is my lovely sweet floral option. From the catalog, I find Dragon's Milk to be warm and confident. Mouse's Long and Sad Tale is friendly and warm, but not really this outgoing persona you're building. I hope this helps at least a little! -
Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

I don't know of any GC with that much carnation in it. Have you tried Alice? It's sweet with a hint of carnation, so that might be a nice alternative, but not a replacement. -

To my nose and on my chemistry? Monster Bait: BiggerCritters smells almost exactly like Euphrosyne without the rose. -
Honey? Buttery? Spicy? Almondy? I was wondering if my nose was broken there for a bit until I saw some reviews that were closer to what I've been smelling- it is creamy and soft and sweet and minty with a hint of florals, but it's more like a tea bouquet. This is gorgeous! It also reminds me quite a lot of Snow-Flakes. It's just a bit creamier and softer, and sweeter... yeah, I can't describe it well. But it is very pretty.

Similarities Between BPAL Scents - GC and general discussion
smallvoice replied to Shollin's topic in Recommendations
This might be completely off base because we have different chemistries and I've never tried Xiuhtecuhtli, but your description reminds me a bit of Medea, with some florals added in. (Medea is my latest campaign scent, I think. Heh. Every now and then I go on a kick where I must recommend something in particular anytime it seems REMOTELY similar, so yeah. Take it for what it's worth! But you really should try her. ) -
I was lucky enough to come by a full decant of Intergalactic, but it startled me. My expectations were that it would be candied fruits and bright musk, but it's dark musk and deep florals and a hint of fruit and spices on me. It just didn't end up being as pretty on my chemistry as I was hoping... but then again, I'm glad to not be in loooove with the scent, because it's so hard to acquire. It's now residing in a much more suitable home.

This is really a scent where the payoff doesn't happen until it's had a chance to settle on my skin. Initially it smells sort of fake and a tad commercial and quite masculine- that darned seaspray note, I think. I never quite get the lovely, dewy fruits that other people are getting, but it does get softer and sweeter on my skin after a bit. There is fruit, but I was hoping for more melon, and it fades like woah on me- I haven't reached a decision on whether I like it a lot or not, but I am sooooo glad to try this one!

As far as I know, the scents are the same formula. I'm guessing that aging in the old versions brought out different notes, and there's also batch variation, but yeah. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, though!

I had a good day today. It pisses me off how quickly I can lose that feeling. And my poor husband. He was like, "You can't... but... I miss you being happy." It doesn't make any sense when I write it out like this, but there it is. I have homework for the lab that I haven't done. Gah. And!!!!! The stupid bookstore was STILL out of the lab manual when I went in today!!!!! S'okay, I bought myself some goggles. The ones for general use just squick me out. They don't clean them or anything. Ewwww. When I am feeling better, I will tell you about the cell diagram project for my bio class and the interpretive dance. I have a linguistics exam on tuesday, and I am excited about it. My instructor had never heard the word lagniappe. Did you know that even though the spelling is french, the origin is much more interesting? Originally it was yapa, coined by the Aztec tribe, the Quetchua. Then the people living there when it was still part of mexico adopted it, assigning it an article: la napa (only the n has a tilde on top, sorry for the lack of proper lettering), so it was pronounced lanyapa. The French people who settled that area then latched onto it and gave it a french spelling. And don't get me started about the Basque. I'm going to follow through with the radiology technician program, but when I have the money, I'm going to go back to school and get a degree in linguistics.

The Wild Men of Jezirat al Tennyn (2006)
smallvoice replied to Heretic's topic in Carnaval Diabolique
This is really surprisingly good on me. I did a little test swipe- I have to admit that I had it in my head that I was getting Wulric, not Wild Men, and I don't know how my brain got scrambled like that, but there it is. When I realized my mistake, I checked the notes and realized that this scent was not for me. It's very, very masculine, so I don't think I will keep it, but the patchouli is actually gorgeous, and I don't know if it's because of the clove and peppers, but I really love that aspect of the blend. This is really striking. I like it quite a lot more than I figured I would, based on notes alone! -
First of all, much and to the person who sent me this decant! I was worried about trying Euphrosyne (stay with me, here- this is a biggerCritter review, I know) because of the strong floral base, but it was shockingly pretty on me. BiggerCritters is sort of like that on me. It reminds me VERY MUCH of Euphrosyne, because I apparently amp the gardenia. I'm not getting any citrus, which is sad, because I adore sweet citrus. I wanted Et Lux Fuit with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, but I'm basically getting... Euphrosyne, with no rose. It is very lovely- I like Euphrosyne, after all, but I wish I got the complexity that I can smell from the decant, dangit. That's a bit of a downer... Guh, I need to break down and save up for a scent locket. I'll have to retry this later in the month, I suppose, but I suspect that gardenia, while it tries to be polite and lovely on my skin, it is simply overwhelming.

This is to get a better feel for what I wear on a regular basis. So, beginning with yesterday: 4/16: Snow-Flakes 4/17: Pink Moon 2007 4/18: Boomslang, but it smells terrible. I'm going to wash it off and wear something lighter. 4/19: Whitechapel

I love Pink Moon 2005. LOVE. It smells decidedly like cotton candy to me and it makes me feel girly and sweet, and it's just -good- to me. So, naturally, I had to have the second incarnation of Pink Moon. (Plus, the bottle! How awesomely cute is it?) I was worried that it would resemble Faith, which smells like violets with antique lace... and I like Faith, but... yeah. Carnation, how do I love thee? It's the same carnation that I know and love from Alice, but it's in a completely different setting. It's so pretty and sweet and not the same as the previous version at all, which is a good thing- A very good thing. I didn't want a copy, I wanted a new take that I could love, and I do love this one. Hooray! Now let's see how often I wear this one... I wish I could describe it better than "sweet carnations," because it's so much more than that. It's springy and lovely. ETA: Huh. It disappears fairly quickly on me, and the faint drydown I do get (even from my hair) is a soft powder... I'm not sure I'm in love with this anymore. I wish it would retain the freshly applied scent.

I just tried it, and I also got an error message. Other scents are working fine for me, though.

I've never smelled Snow White, but if this is what she smells like, I'm glad I never went out of my way to get a sniff. Don't take that the wrong way, though! I was hoping for something else entirely out of Snow White. On to Snow-Flakes, though. I actually really, really like this scent. It smells clean and cold to me. It isn't heavy, and it isn't soapy, and there's a soft mint, but not too much, and it's very inoffensive. I really like it, to my great surprise. I'm certainly glad to have some! I'd love to see it back around next holiday season, too. Edit 7/8/07: Let me amend this review. If this is what Snow White smells like, I can see why it is so popular. This is on my top 5 scents. It is SO evocative; truly like being outside in the midst of that first winter's snow. It has a hint of sweetness, but it's mostly just really pretty and light. I could wear this every day for the rest of my life. I love this! I've swapped for more, and still hope it will make a return showing this winter season! Thankfully, I do not get any cucumber from this, as many others have. Edit 10/25/07: I have had a chance to sniff Snow White 2005, and while there are absolutely similarities, Snow-Flakes is creamier and stronger on my skin, while Snow White has that slush-y pine-y note that most scents with 'snow' in the name have, but Snow-Flakes does not. This is still on my top 5 scents.

Not the desperation, desolation and anguish of unrequited love, but the distant, chill and pitiless scent of the object of that doomed desire. White musk, osmanthus, Nile lily and frankincense. This is actually very pretty on me, but the main problem is that it resembles other blends on me that I prefer- Katharina and Whitechapel, just with flowers instead of fruits. So, yeah. It's what I just said, essentially: It's predominantly white musk with a sort of incensey floral as a faint backdrop. I like it, but I don't love it.

As I'm doing a bottle clearance, I realize that I haven't even reviewed some of these scents, and someday I'm going to wonder why I didn't keep them! This may be one I regret getting rid of. My notes on it are fairly positive: It is light and creamy with a hint of lemony sweetness, not tartness. The white musk doesn't dominate until much later hours. It's powdery and there's a slight spiciness to it as well. Huh. Very pretty. ETA: I just did a little test swipe, and there's something about it that reminds me of an element of Et Lux Fuit!

I can't believe I didn't review this before I sent it out. I had exactly the same experience of it that TrailerTrashPrincess did (possibly because it was the same decant?), which was sweet pine with maybe some very faint sweet floral underneath. Sadly, anything with "Snow" in the name tends to do that... except Snow-Flakes! ETA: After having had the experience of sniffing Snow Bunny this year, I was immediately struck by the similarity to Snow Angel, and I think the decant I got may have been a mislabelled decant of Snow Bunny.
