BPAL

  • Favorite Scents
I haven't tried many scents as yet, but so far, the one I like best is Chimera. Spicy, warm scents seem to work better on me than florals. I also like Tintagel and - surprisingly - Absinthe.

    Tombstone

This scent evokes the feel of the Old West; when I smell it, I feel like I've walked into an upscale saloon. Not a bawdy, wild saloon where unwashed cowboys fight and drink, but something more classy. It's a warm scent, and while tobacco doesn't seem to be a note in it, it reminds me of the rich, plummy scent of pipe tobacco. I think the vanilla and cedar blend on me to create that. It's sweet with a hint of wood to keep it from being cloying. I don't particularly like it for me, but anyone who has good luck with scents with vanilla (I'm thinking Snake Oil, for example) would probably like it. It's one of the heavier scents, and it wears really well.

    Beaver Moon 2005

Traditionally, Beaver Moon is named thus for a very obvious reason: during this time of year, beavers are hard at work building their dams and preparing for the onset of winter. Because it was too hard to resist, BPAL’s Beaver Moon is sillier, sleazier, and full of camp. This scent is of cheesecake and cupcakes, more in line with its cheekier connotations, and really hasn’t a damn thing to do with Luna at all! I love "foody" scents, although I like to use them as enhancers to the cards I make and room scents rather than wearing them, and this LE is my favorite foody scent of them all. It smells exactly like a buttercream Yankee candle in the bottle and on my skin, and since that's one of my favorite Yankee Candle scents, this LE makes me very happy. And hungry. I do wear it when I'm in the mood for something different and fun, but mostly, I plan to dab it on birthday cards and maybe try a room scenting technique.

    Budding Moon

This is a gorgeous scent that smells "green" rather than floral on me, which is a relief, because there are very, very few floral scents that I've tried and liked, mostly the lighter ones. It's a light scent, one that seems perfect for spring, and I've been wearing it more often now that the weather is warm. If you like light florals, this is perfect. It's sweet without being cloying or heavy, and there's just something about it that brings to mind the budding blossoms that the name implies.

    Red Phoenix

I tried this when it first arrived, and I liked it, but I didn't love it. Still, I put it on the shelf with the few bottles and multitudinous imps that I like enough to wear rather than swap, and I let it sit for a while, mostly because I had other new scents to try and partly because I didn't remember being all that "wow" about it. I'm not sure if my skin chemistry was different, or I wasn't remembering it right, or if it just seemed ho-hum in the midst of a new scent smelling frenzy, but the next time I put it on, I loved it. It's warm and lightly spicy, and thank goodness the tobacco doesn't come out strong on me. Sometimes, tobacco notes and I don't get along, but in this case, the cassia cinnamon and plum mix well and become the dominant scents on me. It's not heavy; it's just warm and comforting. Even better is that every time I wear this around my mother, she remarks on how good it smells, so this one is definitely a keeper, fast becoming my "signature scent".

    Stardust

This is a scent that I'm currently aging, but I will say that it lives up to its name and the mood/time period it's trying to evoke. When I wore it, I felt like I ought to be in Studio 54, doing the Hustle followed by a snort of cocaine off some glam boy's bare behind. It's a very strong scent, and it wore very well on me; it's the longest lasting scent I've tried. It's heavy and decadent, the scent of glitter and indulgence, not a scent for everyone's tastes, and while it's not to mine, I still give it a positive review for being so long-lasting and for being so strongly evocative.

    Bengal

Wow. This turns into pure honey on me. Once it dries and I take a deeper, closer sniff, I can catch undertones of the peppers and cloves taking the edge off the honey sweetness, but honey is definitely the predominant scent, which is not a bad thing at all. I really like this one; it's warm and rich, but not too sweet, and I like the scent of honey, so this one is a keeper.

    Dragon Moon 2006

My order of Dragon Moon arrived today, so naturally I had to try it ASAP. It's an interesting scent - I like it. I don't OMGLOVE it, but it's one I'll keep. It does have a hint of the dragon blood resin, but on me, I think the sandalwood and cherry blossom are coming out more. It's floral and a bit sweet, but it's a sharp sweetness, if that makes sense. It's not cloyingly sweet like some florals, and it's not "green" like Budding Moon. Also, the bottle art is gorgeous.
