    Grand Guignol

GRAND GUIGNOL This is apricot brandy exactly. The apricot really amps on my skin and takes on a syrupy fruit quality. It reminds me of summers spent at my grandmother's garden, chasing unseen things and running through the fields of corn, the orchards, and the tall grasses. This is a comforting, scent with a jolt of boozy fruit.

    Peitho

PEITHO You know what Peitho is to me? I tried it a couple years ago and it was the first jasmine scent I fell in love with. Before that, I was iffy on jasmine blends. Now? I love many more of them. However, Peitho is still one of my favorites. It's one of the most lusty jasmine blends I have ever smelled and I has a nice, strong throw. The bonus? To me it smells *so much* like LUSH's Flying Fox perfume, Youki Hi bath bomb, and Fox in the Flowers shower gel.

    Phobos

PHOBOS This is very uplifting, vibrant, fresh. It is nothing but lemongrass and verbena on my skin from start to finish. I find it very energizing and much less cloying that most lemongrass scents. I think that the grapefruit really helps freshen and lighten this scent.

    Vechernyaya

VECHERNYAYA This starts out as a light, white, cold blend of musks but as soon as it warms to my skin I get a strong bloom of opium. It's very much like Sleepy Moon and Lotus Moon but with that cool blanket of white musks instead. The patchouli sits as a base to this but doesn't overpower at all. The opium is the most prominent part of this and I have really grown fond of that scent.

    Versailles

VERSAILLES This is a very pretty perfume: it is bright, uplifting, feminine, warm. It starts out with a strongly glowing orange/red scent that is both resinous and citrus. That aspect lingers but it is also joined by a sensual jamine and gentle, barely-there rose. This has a very romantic feeling to it and it reminds me of The Haunted Palace but with more jasmine.

    Rapture

RAPTURE Oh, rapturous indeed! This just screams red passion and sexual afterglow. I can pick up a medley of florals but especially the jasmine. The myrrh adds a sexy, musky sort of effect. I need to keep this one on hand!

    Incantation

INCANTATION This starts out as a light, clean scent. I don't get lemon/citrus at all, but I can tell it is there. Rather, it seems to blend with the heavier, darker notes in a way that makes this smell like a tea scent. Yes, that's right: TEA. It is lovely. It's sort of wispy and refreshing and yet has undercurrents of resin and earth (vetiver). Very intriguing.

    Nanshe

NANSHE Nanshe is a gentle herbal lavender with an almost minty tone to it. That sits as the base and a bright, yellow citrus verbena sits on top. It is very gentle and calming.

    Baghdad

BAGHDAD I pegged this one. I did not look at the description before testing it and I immediately thought of saffron, sandalwood, and rose. For some reason on my skin I can scarcely pick up the mandarin or the other notes. This is really pretty; it's sort of like an open air market full of exotic scents, with a touch of musky, spicy, floral warmth.

    Black Phoenix

BLACK PHOENIX This starts out with the scent of tangy, juicy cherries and very quickly becomes a cherry-almond scent. After a while I start to smell a dark musk, the slightest hint of spice, and a sort of smoky scent that reminds me of opium. All of these things lay over the top of a floral and possibly a resin. Whatever it is, this makes for a very complex, heady, and sensual scent.

    Omen

OMEN Early on this has a semi-sweet breeze of juniper that wafts over myrrh. I love the way those intermingle and the oakmoss adds a nice touch of murky aquatics. The patchouli gets more noticeable as time wears on and it is a very sinister, heavy patchouli. This seems to have a sort of earthy, dark, mysterious air to it which is very fitting for the name. The patchouli is a little heavy for me but try it; you might be surprised. I found I liked Omen a lot more than I expected to.

    Ode on Melancholy

ODE ON MELANCHOLY This definitely has a quietly sad and melancholy mood to it. It starts out mostly lavender and sandalwood, a bit sharp. There is a hint of white musk to give this an almost perfume-like edge. As time passes, the lavender and sandalwood soften and I find that the wisteria becomes the strongest note. It is very sweet and gentle. There are small flashes of rose beneath the wisteria. I get the sense that this is a vibrant pink color with hints of white tears. Overall this is a very pretty, light floral.

    Epitaph

EPITAPH This is a lovely, haunting scent. It has a smattering of dust and mist that sort of conceal and soften the rose and lily. The two have a very funereal scent to them, sort of faded and moderated. There is an almost candy-tart sort of twist to the florals so they are very different for me than most rose and lily blends. Very ethereal and evocative.

    Gingerbread Poppet

GINGERBREAD POPPET 2007 WET: Spices and gingerbread. DRY: This smells exactly like fresh-from-the-oven gingerbread cookies, the kind that are just a little bit chewy and have a nice kick of ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I have no idea how Beth does it, but this is magical. I have tried the 2005 version and it has more of a cookie-batter sort of ginger scent. I like that one, but I prefer the 2007 version which has a spicier, baked ginger cookie scent. LOVE!

    Mistletoe

MISTLETOE 2007 WET: Christmas tree! DRY: This is a strong, almost sharp evergreen pine at first. It has an almost menthol-eucalyptus vapor to it. Never fear, though! As it settles into my skin it starts to turn into more of a fresh, gentle evergreen scent. There is a touch of a cold winter breeze and snow. The longer I have this on, the sweeter and lighter it gets until it fades off. This blend captures the essence of mistletoe and the holiday season. I think this one is going to make an amazing room scent!

    Egg Nog

EGG NOG 2007 WET: It smells exactly like thick, creamy egg nog. DRY: This smells exactly like thick, creamy egg nog... but with more booze. It sort of turns into a rum-laden egg nog drink with lots of nutmeg and a hint of vanilla-like creaminess. It has an average throw and wear-length. As time passes this lightens into a more gentle version of egg nog, sans the booze, before fading off into nothing. This smells so delicious. It really makes me wish I had some egg nog to drink.

    Snow White

SNOW WHITE (2007 Version) WET: Sweet, powdery snow. DRY: On my skin this seems to be a softer, more seamless scent than the older versions of Snow White. It is still the same, but it seems to be more smooth. It is a cold, dreamy, innocent, soft, virginal, powdery snow. There are hints of almost-powdery soft florals, a milk and honey-like creaminess, a touch of coconut, and possibly even some vanilla. This one amps like crazy on my skin and sticks around for hours. It's a very comforting, soft, girlie scent.

    The Peacock Queen

PEACOCK QUEEN (2007 Version) WET: A sweet, full rose. DRY: On my skin this blooms into a lush, velvety red rose at the height of its bloom. This rose scent is prideful, beautiful, voluptuous. This is sophisticated and feminine. She is smooth and silky yet shows a touch of thorniness as time passes. It's a close call but I think I love this one more than Rose Red. There's just something about this that is so... sumptuous.

    Rose Red

ROSE RED (2007 Version) WET: In the bottle this smells like apples and roses. DRY: On my skin this turns into a fresh, crisp, vibrant red rose scent. Behind that I get an almost green apple-like undertone and there is a hint of cut stems, a smattering of fresh dirt, and a touch of dew. This is gorgeous! The rose is very different than most of the other rose scents I have tried. It is a young and crisp rose. This blend has a strong throw, wears long, and doesn't morph past the initial drydown.
  20. It's exactly like that on my skin, too. I love that one!

    Midwinter's Eve

MIDWINTER'S EVE 2007 Even though I appreciated this scent when it was released in 2005, I do not think I had developed a nose yet because now I see that there are so many subtleties and nuances that I missed. WET: Plum candy. DRY: This is a a juicy sweet, deep plum scent. It is a very dark red-purple. It has a depth to it and a magical, glittering quality. Midwinter's Eve is a poised winter blend: the passion and sweetness of sugar plums, the silence of a dark winter's night, the refinement of winter flowers. Given my background in ballet, this scent is a dead-on expression of all that I know and understand about the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker. I can't say how much this means to me.
  22. The Snow Storm, hands down. Snow Moon and Skadi are other good ones, but Skadi is soooo hard to track down.

    The Shivering Boy

THE SHIVERING BOY WET: Sweet, biting, cold, slush. DRY: This is a very cold, wintry scent. I do not smell fluffy, powdery snow. Instead it is a biting cold winter storm with sleet that is layered over resins and icy grapes. The cold, biting, wintry part of this blend reminds me of Hunger Moon in some ways. Beyond that cold and ghostly ozone, the benzoin has a very balsamic and sweet presence. The other resins, labdanum and olibanum, are sort of sticky, warm, and rich. They contrast the cold very nicely. Just when I least expect it, a sweet and icy grapevine and wine scent wafts up through the storm and the resins. This is such a perfect winter scent. It is so evocative.

    El Dia de los Reyes

EL DIA DE REYES WET: In the bottle this smells just like hot cocoa mix, the kind that leaves little bits of sugary undissolved cocoa around the inside of the cup. Aah, what memories! DRY: On my skin this immediately moves from instant cocoa to a very fine, decadent, silky smooth Mexican hot cocoa. It is dead on! The cocoa sits the strongest but there is a very clear mix of coffee and cinnamon and sugar just under that cocoa surface. This smells so festive, rich, and chocolatey that I can almost taste it. It has a strong throw, long wear-length, and doesn't really morph once it dries on my skin. Yummy! *lick*

    November

NOVEMBER WET: Snow, a touch of fir, autumn leaves. DRY: November is a heavy blanket of fresh snow over piles of leaves. There are oak leaves of all colors, maple leaves, dead and dried pine needles, acorns, and the last traces of living plants and late flowers that have stubbornly withstood the cold before the first snow. There is a slushy mint quality to this and the leaves are the perfect mix of earth and nature; not too swarthy but still very earthy. This smells just like the month of November. Whereas the start of this scent is more leafy, as time wears on it becomes colder and more snow-like until I am left with only traces of soft, powdery snow. This is so lovely that it makes me wish that William Cullen Bryant had written poems about all the other months!
