    Catherine

When I first put Catherine on, it smelled like lemon-mint instead of orange-rosemary. No hint of rose. I resisted washing it off and waited. After it dried down a bit, it became less bitter and smelled more orangey and less lemony. Then after a little longer, a very faint hint of rose came out, and I liked the scent a little more. It's still not my kind of scent, but at least it wasn't as harsh as when I first put it on.

    Water of Notre Dame

I decided to try Water of Notre Dame today to see if the calming powers would help. Right away, I love this scent. On me, it is a very clean floral, like fresh cold spring air. I can't make out the specific notes, just the smell of spring wildflowers. And I do feel a sense of soothing when I put it on.

    Goneril

Goneril was on my wish list for a while because calla lily and orchid are some of my favourite flowers, so I wanted to try it. Out of the bottle: very perfumey. First on: light, sweet, touch of cedar floral. After I wear it awhile, it just becomes a nice, slightly sweet floral, with good staying power. I wouldn't wear it as an everyday scent, but I like it when I'm in the mood for a floral scent.

    Embalming Fluid

On me, Embalming Fluid is mostly green tea with a hint of lemon, and a faint hint of musk. (Enough lemon to give it texture without overpowering lemoniness). It smells like a good commercial green tea scent (since it is such a popular scent in perfumes, lotions, etc.) I think it would be a good choice for a friend who doesn't like the incensey perfume scents. I think I am going to get more of this in spring, it will be a great springy/summery scent. I enjoy it a lot, especially for the days when you want a light, clean scent.

    Masabakes

When I tried Masabakes, I couldn't pick out any of the notes. It just came across as very heavy and sweet on me. Too cloying for me. It reminds me of commercial perfume. I didn't get the sourness that a lot of people seemed to get though.

    Lilith

When it first went on, I totally got bubblegum. Then it quickly changed to decaying rose, and then to a very strong myrrh scent. After it dries down, it smells exactly like an opium hand creme I used to love, with just a hint of rose. (I'm not sure what note I'm smelling that makes me think of opium, but that's what it smells like to me.) It took a minute to warm up to it, but I LOVE it. Won't buy a bottle just now, but it's going on me "want more of" list.

    Cathode

When I first heard the name, I expected Cathode to smell like solder and circuit boards. Guess that's the electrical engineering background. On me, I don't smell mint AT ALL. It smells almost like green tea and citrus, although I can definitely smell a bit of the mosses. When I worked at a florist, I loved the smell of a box of Spanish moss and I do get a hint of that with the faintest hint of the oakmoss. So it's a nice, light, green smell on me, and I enjoy it a lot.

When your favorite GC blends are discontinued

You might like Zephyr, it reminds me a bit of Queen Mab but much lighter. Have you tried it?

    Zephyr

It's interesting to read the reviews and see how differently this scent works with people's body chemistry. To me, Zephyr's name is completely appropriate, it smells like a winter's wind, with a cold, light sweetness. Although some people are getting a masculine feel, I get a totally feminine, light feel with this one. It reminds me of when you hang your linens on the line in the winter and they come in with that lovely scent of the cold air. It reminds me a bit of Queen Mab's little sister... there is a slight hint of Queen Mab under the coldness and lightness, just enough to give it some bite. When it fades it's lightly sandalwood with a bit of muskiness. It's not my typical scent, but it's a fun one. I'll enjoy the rest of the imp.

    Rage

I so wanted Rage to work on me because I love rose geranium and dragon's blood. However, something about it with my body chemistry doesn't quite work. After I put it on, I end up getting a very sweet floral with a strong hint of currant and kind of a muskiness (maybe that's the amber). It's not unpleasant but it smells kind of soapy.

Your Best-Bet "Must Try" Enabling Scents

Shouldn't there be a foody one too? (I'm just thinking how my friends tend to gravitate toward the foody scented candles)

Your Best-Bet "Must Try" Enabling Scents

Since the holiday deadline is approaching, I was thinking of getting a set of imps if I end up needing to give a random gift or if I just want to give a friend one imp to try or something like that. Does anyone do anything like that? What do you think would be a good set of imps to have on hand for "gift emergencies"?

    Vinland

I love the name of this one, especially after being in Iceland and going to the museum with Viking sagas and historical information. (According to the museum they were just calling the whole of North America Vinland at one point.) When it first goes on, it almost smells like pineapple floral (I'm not sure what's making me think pineapple since I am sure there is nothing pineappley at all in this one). After a while, it's kind of a sweet, wintery floral, very light but cold. I don't smell loganberry per se but I smell a bit of fruit, and something kind of maple-y (although maybe that's just suggestive thought). It definitely grows into you as you wear it, the scent improves over time. When I first put it on I thought "I like this but I don't LOOVE it, maybe I should swap it." Now that I've been wearing it a while I definitely want to keep the imp, but I don't see myself buying a full bottle of this. After a few hours, the loganberries are more obvious. The sweetness is very light -- it's not syrupy at all -- and I really do smell a snowy prairie somehow. I think it will go into my long list of scents that I like and will wear when I am in a certain mood. However, this is one of those scents that makes me want to keep going back and sniffing my wrist.

    Kali

In the vial and when I first put it on, it's dark, sweet, intense, sexy, and wonderful. Unfortunately on me after it dries down it becomes very light and almost lemony (although still sweet) -- sort of a faint chocolate lemon. It does smell so wonderful and fabulous in the vial that I am going to use the imp to scent my car and enjoy the scent there -- it has great staying power in my car at least.

Rose Recommendations - which blend is for me?

Moon Rose is my second favourite rose scent -- it smells a lot like Yves Saint Laurent Paris (but nicer). Alice isn't very rosey on me at all. My favourite rose is Zombi, but it does have an earthy smell to it as well which you probably either love or hate.

    Desire

Desire reminds me of Red Moon without the spiciness – almost like Red Moon crossed with Snake Oil. It’s mildly fruity and sweet and smoky and sexy. I don’t get any of the notes people are picking out: rose, apple, or lemon. It smells dark red to me, if that makes any sense… I am mostly picking out the vanilla and the fruitiness of the neroli and apple without the specific notes of them, and maybe a hint of the musk. I love it. It will be a good second-best replacement for my Red Moon when it runs out.

    Formula 54

This is another one of Beth's fabulous LE blends that ends up so complex that I find it impossible to pick out single notes. I am SO GLAD I got talked into buying it. On me, it is sweet, but not fruity, and not overly sweet -- just the right amount. It is girly without being floral. It has a bit of spiciness without smelling like it came out of the baking cabinet. It is just GOOD. And it has GREAT staying power. I've had it on for over 12 hours and it is still as strong as it was this morning. Good thing I love it so much!

    Kabuki

When it goes on, it’s smoky cherry. There is a little hint of cough syrupy cherry but not enough to be a bad thing. I like the cherry here better than Red Queen. It’s darker and more mysterious, and sexier. After a few minutes, the faint cough syrupiness fades completely, and I almost smell an underlying something that reminds me vaguely of Snake Oil, with cherry overlaid on top. Later on, the anise comes out more strongly, and there is still a cherry scent but with an obvious anise smell. I love this one a lot.

    Zombi

This one is totally rose and dirt. Light and sweet and lovely. It’s very feminine on me, I can’t imagine it on a guy. Dirt sounds weird but it’s actually nice, like a comforting earthy smell. Like working in the garden. And it describes it perfectly. The scent is predominantly rose, though. I think this is one of my favourite rose scents. It's bumping something out of my Top Ten.

    Dana O'Shee

I stayed away from this one because of the name (I had bad associations with the name Dana) even though it sounded like one I would love. I was gifted with it, and I do love the scent. It is very light and marzipan-like on me. Sweet and candylike, with a light but obvious almondy smell. It doesn't have much staying power, but it's nice to have a light scent for those days where you don't want to overpower everyone. Most of the scents I choose are very in-your-face, which aren't good for certain situations (weddings, job interviews, etc.)
  21. I have a niece in high school that lives far away, so I don't see her much. I wanted to get her a BPAL "sampler" (6 imps and then a nice box to put them in). Here's what I am thinking so far: Bon Vivant (yummy strawberry) Alice Dana O'Shee So sort of sweet, fruity things... I don't think I should get Jailbait because her dad would never let me live that one down! So what else is good with an "appropriate" name?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think Has No Hanna reminds me of Silentium Amoris with a bit of an extra kick.
