    O

Oh good lord, I adore this scent. Wet: Straight up honey on my skin. I adore honey, so this is good news for me. Dry down: The amber starts to come out and play, and it's a little powdery at this point, but nothing overwhelming or scary. Dry: Ah! Honey + vanilla = LOVE Verdict: This is truly a sexy scent. Bottle!
  2. September 10 Questions What #1 actor, director, author and/or musician are you obsessed with? I love Neil Gaiman and Florence and the Machine. If you have a pet, would he/she/they like to receive a treat or a toy as a gift? Does your pet have any dietary restrictions or other preferences w.r.t. said treat? My pets (3 cats, 2 dogs) would love to be thought of by my Witch, but it’s definitely not expected. Treats for cats and dogs are always appreciated by my yapping hordes! What are your top three "I want to try them but I think I'll never get to try them" (or, "I've tried them and I want moar moar moar, but I don't think I'll ever get any") scents/bath oils/sprays? Cartitas bath oil from the TP sounds amazing! I’ve been avoiding the Trading Post until the Halloween update is live over there to save on shipping. As for scents, I would give a kidney to try Yvaine and Fearful Pleasure. Is there a particular artist and piece that you would like a print of? If so, what is your max size that you could spare on your walls? I absolutely adore Georgia O’Keefe. I love all of her poppy paintings but sadly have none. I have a fair amount of wall size, because most of my walls are bare, lol! Are you interested in anything from the Villainness Bad Apples update? No thank you If you are in to beauty and makeup related stuff, what kind of stuff do you like? What is your skintone and hair color? Are there any beauty products you've wanted to try but just never purchase? I love makeup and nail polish! My skin is fair with neutral undertones, and I have dark, very deep brown hair and brown eyes. I’ve always wanted to try a lip or cheek stain, but haven’t yet. Are there any CDs/Albums you've been wanting but haven't bought yet? What format do you prefer? Patrick Stump (of Fall Out Boy fame, LOL!) has a solo album supposedly coming out in October that I’m itching to get my hands on. Also, all of the Needtobreathe albums are in my iTunes wishlist but haven’t gotten around to purchasing yet, and Simon and Garfunkel’s “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme” album. I prefer MP3 format or CD for music as all I have now is an iPod. Do you like coffee or tea? Would you be interested in trying some different types? I am not a coffee fan, but I do love black teas and chais and I would love to try new teas! Are you going away for any part of this round? I will be in and around my neck of the woods throughout the round, so never fear, dear Witch! If your witch were going somewhere on a vacation during the round, would you want a little souvenir? If my Witch were to remember me on while she/he was on something as fun as a vacation, I would die from happiness! Do you enjoy any outdoor activities? Do you have a favorite form of "exercise"? (keep it clean, all!) I’m trying to get into hiking, but I haven’t been able to really get gung ho about it. But I do love to lift barbell weights! I lift 3 times a week and am focusing on the basic lifts at the moment: deadlifts, squats, push presses, and pull ups. I literally fell in love the moment I touched the bar. I’ve spent most of my adult life trying to lose weight, and lifting has helped tremendously. Would you like to receive a mix-CD from your Witch? I would love that! Mix CDs are awesome, and I would love to hear something my Witch put together! Any witchee's with a ravelry account have any favourited patterns that cost money that would be a welcome gift? No ravelry, sorry! Do you work/study at a desk and enjoy interesting or cute office supplies? Office supplies are one of my passions! Post its, pens, highlighters, note pads, love em all and I can never have too many! Witchee, are you a fan of musicals? If so, which ones? I love musicals! Funny Girl, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Moulin Rouge, Rocky Horror Picture Show, West Side Story, Aida and Gypsy.

    September 9 Ketchup!

My dearest Witch, as I said in yesterday’s round of questions, I have an Amazon wish list now (what a black hole that was for my productivity)! Please know that these items are merely to give you an idea of my tastes And my Etsy wishlist is here. Favorite Mythological Creature? Dragons and fairies! Love em! How would you like to receive some of your Witch's favorite recipes, tailored to your likes/dietary restrictions? And specific wants? Ooh, I love getting recipes! I have a recipe box for this very purpose. And if my Witch has any great recipes for pickled veggies or different ways to cook vegetables, I would absolutely love to know! Do you need any boxes to store your smellies in? Imps, bottles, supplies, all of the above? I am so desperately in need of a box to store my BPALs!!! I have a little cardboard box right now, and I feel bad every time I open it. I have only 3 bottles, and a handful of imps, but I did order quite a few Weenie decants, so I need room to grow. Muppets: yea or nay? I love the Muppets!!! The nail polish brand OPI has a Muppet collection coming out for Christmas that I am so jazzed over. My favorite Muppet would have to be either Gonzo, Animal, or Fozzie. Do you have an affinity for Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, The Far Side, and other comic strips? If so, which is your favorite? By far my favorite comic strip is Get Fuzzy. I have a Siamese cat that looks almost exactly like Bucky Do you like hair things barrettes, headbands, flowers? Sadly, I do not. My hair is not only long, but it’s thick and heavy (I easily have enough hair for three people, no joke) and I find that most hair accessories are too wimpy for my industrial strength hair. Do you like to burn incense? If so, what are your favorite kinds...sticks? cones? resins? What are your favorite scents? No incense for me, please. Harry Potter - a fan? If so, what house are you? Aaaahhh!!! I love Harry Potter! I’m torn between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, but if I’m being honest, I’m probably a Ravenclaw. If you were to receive a gift card, what places would you like to get one from? I love Target, Barnes and Noble, and Sephora. Is there a particular myth/folktale/legend/fairytale/godstory that you're drawn to? I love the Persephone story (my avatar is actually a painting of the Persephone myth). I’m also a huge fan of traditional European fairy tales. Not the cleaned up Disney versions, but the scary ones. Sleeping Beauty, Snow White (the one with the dwarves and with Rose Red), Beauty and the Beast. One of my favorite books is “The Uses of Enchantment” by Bruno Bettleheim. He took the original fairy tales and used them as a lens to view the Freudian/psychosexual development of children. The science behind it is super sketchy, but it’s a fascinating read. If you RP, tabletop, forum, or otherwise... Do you have any original characters you'd like to see art of? If so, please give information! Even if it's a link to a web page or a profile or picture! No RP’ing here, I’m afraid. If you could see anything, what would it be? Can be a person, an event, a landmark or monument, an object, etc. And it doesn't have to be on this planet, or in this time period, or in this reality! I would love to go to Paris! My grandmother is from Paris, and I’ve always wanted to go and see my “homeland,” as it were When you are having a really rough day, what do you like to do/have to make it a little brighter? I work out! Seriously. Bad days are always made better by heavy deadlifts and squats! Favorite Quotes? This is soooo dorky, but I love this quote. It’s from the Green Lantern universe (huge fan here!), specifically the Blue Lantern corps’ oath: “In fearful day, in raging night, with strong hearts full, our souls ignite. When all seems lost in the war of light, look to the stars—for hope burns bright!” I think that life without hope is not life at all. “The only way I know to finish is to finish first.” How much do you like jewelry? Like, if you were to get a shit ton of it during the round, how excited would you be? I adore jewelry! My wardrobe is pretty boring (basic jeans and fitted t shirts, black pants, khaki pants, button ups), and jewelry is a good way to spice it up! In particular, I’ve been dying to try a cheap scent locket. I have a few scents that I loooooove, but that don’t love me back (Snake Oil, I’m looking at you!) and I’m thinking maybe a scent locket would work. What are your thoughts on comics? Any you like? Any you have been wanting to try? Favorite characters? Aaaah!!! I am a HUGE comic book fan!! Traditional superhero favorites include Batman, Green Lantern, Superman, and X-Men. More nontraditional comic favorites include Sandman by Neil Gaiman (I cried so hard at the end of the Kindly Ones!), Fables (my local bookstore closed, and I’ve been trying to find books 14 and up), Y the Last Man, The Swap Thing (Alan Moore’s run), etc. I could go on for days about my love for comics/graphic novels. Are you musical? Do you play an instrument, and if so, what? If not, what do you wish you could play or do? I played the clarinet for a long time (over 5 years), but haven’t played in an even longer time. I absolutely loved playing though. I moved across country, and couldn’t find a teacher that I meshed with. I’ve always wanted to play the violin or the cello because I absolutely adore classical music that features a lot of strings (Vivaldi’s Four Seasons come to mind immediately). Does anyone garden? And if you do, what do you grow? If not, would a starter garden kit be something you'd be interested in? I grow roses every summer and love it! I’m eyeing an herb garden next, but chances are good that I’ll be in an apartment next year (grad school FTW!) and will need to grow everything in pots. I’m not sure how to do that, so if my Witch has any experience/ideas with this sort of things I would love to hear it! Do you decorate for Halloween? Is your decorating taste elegant, kitschy and fun, or scary? I love decorating for Halloween! We live in a neighborhood with tons of small children so we try to keep the scary to a minimum, so it winds up being more of a mix of elegant fall decorations with fun Halloween things mixed in. Do you have any symbols or totems that are meaningful to you? I really love the infinity symbol (it looks like a sideways 8). I love the idea of things without beginnings or endings, and so it’s always meant a lot to me. In that vein, I love the trinity knot (I have a brother and sister, and we are exceptionally close. For years we’ve been trying to find trinity knot rings for the three of us), and I also love the number 13 (it’s my lucky number!)
  4. Hello Witch! I'm going to try to be as thorough and helpful as possible when it comes to answering questions. You may be sick of my blathering by the time this round is over From the Weenie Update....what are you most wanting to try? My dearest Witch, it must be known that I have very little self control when it comes to BPAl I've ordered decants of most of the things I'd like to try, but am hemming and hawing on Halloween: Las Vegas, Nightmare, and An Incubus Leaving Two Sleeping Women. Who's into nail polish? What colors/brands? I am so into nail polish, it's a little bananas. I love glitters of all colors, prefer to stick to reds/pinks/purples for cremes and shimmers, and love every brand I've ever come across with the glaring exception of Zoya, because those suckers never dry for me. Candles? I love candles! I prefer jar candles, and love clean and/or citrus scents the best. Witch, you should know that any fragrance with patchouli causes most of my household to have an allergic reaction, so no patchouli please Is there a quote (or lyric or part of a poem) that really resonates with you or is your favorite? The virtue of courage is a prerequisite for the practice of all other virtues; otherwise one is virtuous only when virtue has no cost. - C.S. Lewis Do you like knitted goodies? If so, what would you like and what colors? As someone with close to no skill in the knitting realm, I would adore knitted stuffs, particularly hats, scarves, and gloves. As for colors, I love them all except the paler colors (they wash me out and get dirty faster). Would you be interested in homemade edibles that are NOT sweets? Any specifics? I have celiac disease (no wheat/gluten) and live a low carb lifestyle to combat it, so I would be highly appreciative of things like jerky (of all types!), dried fruits, pickld veggies of all kinds, and nuts. What GC do you live in mortal terror of the lab discontinuing, but never get around to buying? Harlot! It's one of the most perfect rose blends I have, but I just keep huffing my imp and pushing it out of my BPAL cart to make room for new things. Do you have wishlists for non-BPAL e-tailers? And if so, could you provide a link or a list? At this point in time, I do not. I just signed up for the book swap, so over the weekend one of my goals is to make a small Amazon or Etsy and Goodreads wish list Witch, do you use a PC or a Mac? I am a Mac worshipper. I fought with various PC’s my whole life, but this summer I bought a Macbook, and it’s true love. “Never gonna give you up” as sung by Barry White comes to mind  What is your favorite animal? Elephants! But only with their trunks pointing up because someone once told me that an elephant with a down pointing trunk was bad luck. I don’t know if it’s true (probably not!), but I like the up pointing trunks better anyway. What are you going to be for Halloween? I haven’t decided if I’m going out or not, but if I do, I have a rockin Absinthe Green Fairy costume planned! Green leotard, some kind of cool stockings/tights, green makeup, and floral stuffs in my hair. If it happens, it’s going to be my best costume ever. If you could have a piece of oil painting jewelry (pendant, pair of earrings, or ring) with absolutely anything painted on it, what would it be? (If you prefer wall art instead, same question as above.) I would prefer wall art, and I love starry night skies with crescent and harvest moons or woodsy/floral/fairy scenes. How do you feel about nick-knacks? My house is very small, so the knick knacks that get to hang around must be very special, like one from my Witch! What traditions (family, holiday, or otherwise) are important to you? Every year on Christmas Day, my family gets together and we go to the movie theater in the afternoon. I love that one Sundays are also considered family days: we get together and have a big dinner, which is a lovely way to wind down the week and get started with the upcoming one. Do you like going to the movies? I love going to the movie theater, but it’s so expensive here that I don’t go very often. I think the last thing I saw in theaters was Captain America, and that was on a date. What are your favorite restaurants? I eat low-carb/Paleo, so I don’t eat out a lot. But when I do, I love Mexican food and sushi! Do you play any video games? Nope. Do you like any anime? The only one I have is the first 6 volumes of Saiyuki, which I love to pieces, but I can’t find the rest of the series. Do you have an E-reader/iPad/something similar that you need a cover/case for? I don’t have an ereader, so I have no need for a cover

    March Hare

After much searching, I managed to track down an imp of this and I couldn't be more excited to try it! Wet: Sweet, juicy apricot mixed with equal part spicy clove. Wow. This is awesome! Dry down: The clove and apricot continue to do their lovely duet. Beautiful. Dry: The clove starts to overpower the apricot, but in the best possible way. This is a really special blend. Verdict: The throw on this wasn't overpowering, which is good as I hate scents with huge throws. It lasted a fairly long time on my skin (it's been almost 5 hours since putting it on and I can still smell the clove and just a hint of sweet apricot). This is pretty spectacular, and I'm going to need to find a bottle stat.

    Snow White

I've got the 2009 version here, for reference. Wet, it's almost heartbreakingly beautiful. I can't even describe it, except that it's simply stunning. Dry down: This morphed into pure, scented cat litter on me. What?! For about 45 minutes, all I got was pure cat litter. Dry: Now it's a little calmer, and is a lovely vanilla floral. It's soft and feminine and sweet, not powdery at all (which is an excellent thing). Verdict: The cat litter stage is almost unbearable. I was the only one who smelled it though, because when I waved my arm at my mother going "OH MY GOD I SMELL LIKE A CAT PAN!!!!" she took a deep whiff, smiled, and said "That's the first of your BPALs that I would wear. It smells nothing like cat litter! It's beautiful!" So I think that this needs retesting (I'm very close to that time of the month, which has been known to turn even dependable blends into their Mr. Hyde counterpart) and if I still get cat litter, my lovely mother gets the imp!
  7. Dear Witch, I'll be posting answers to the questions and things here so as not to clutter up the main thread. Please know that I'm so beyond excited to be a part of this awesome community and to get to know you! Alethia

    Lemon-Scented Sticky Bat

I have an insane love of everything citrus, but I'm not sure how I feel about sugar. Beth's creations are rapidly changing my mind on that (hello honey!) and this is my first blend with sugar. I have high hopes! Wet: Oh my god this is truly fantastic. Immediately I get a blast of bright, bright lemon with only the tiniest hint of sugar to mellow it out. I really hope that this lasts (I'm looking at you Detox, you fifteen minute chump!) Dry down: The sugar comes out to play and doesn't turn to plastic or burnt sugar on my skin like I was fearing! The sugar tames the lemon just enough to make it smell less like I poured lemon juice on my arm (which I adore, don't get me wrong) and more of a lemon Jolly Rancher candy (also amazing). Dry: After about an hour, LSSB has mellowed out even further and has turned from a lemon Jolly Rancher into a beautifully soft creamy lemon. I am in love. Verdict: My poor wallet is rocking back and forth in a corner, weeping and wailing because between the Weenie Order of Doom just got even larger. In order to the scents from the Weenie update, I'm going to need at least one backup bottle of Josie and at least another bottle of LSSB. This is love.
  9. Alethia

    Josie

Wet: Honey and magnolia. Oh my gods I am in heaven. If Josie stays anywhere near close to this, I will need at least 4 backup bottles pronto. Drydown: Honey, magnolia, and the peach starts to peek through. YES. Dry: Honey and magnolia and peach in equal parts. Yes. Yes. YES. YES!!!! Verdict: Out of all the scents I've tried since finding BPAL in May, Josie is the first to make me want backup bottles. When the Weenies go up, a bottle of Josie will be coming along to keep them company.
  10. Alethia

    Mlle. Lilith, Fortune Teller

This scent really surprised me! Wet: WOAH! Pure incense! I started to panic a little because I was really only smelling incense, but after about a minute and a half, the coconut and sugar came out and blended absolutely beautifully with the incense and left me with this amazing scent. Drydown: Coconut, sugar, pink musk with just a hint of incense. Loving this! Now that the incense is behaving, this is turning out to be full of win! Dry: Sugar and incense. Wow! I've never tried a blend with incense before, but Mlle. Lilith may have changed my mind! I didn't get any pomegranate, honey myrtle, cypress, or orange blossom, which makes me a little sad, but not too much as I unexpectedly adore this. Verdict: This one stays in the picture!
  11. Alethia

    Klara

I have discovered that BPAL's honey is absolutely gorgeous on my skin, as is their rose notes, so I had to try Klara. Wet: Lovely honey and juicy mandarin. This is really lovely. The honey isn't powdery, just light and beautiful. Drydown: Honey, mandarin, rose, and carnation. The rose and carnation started to peek through, and I was about to start scouring the For Sale pages for a bottle because this was great. It wasn't overpowering but just perfect. Dry: NOOOOO!!!! I can only smell the faintest hint of honey now and only when I press my nose directly against my skin. It's almost completely gone. This makes me so sad Verdict: It was absolutely wonderful for an hour, and even though I prefer that my perfume stays close to my skin, I still need to be able to smell it. The imp will stay though, and I'll wear it on days where I can reapply frequently.
  12. Alethia

    Brisingamen

Wet: The most lovely combination of carnation and myrtle. It was soft and floral without being old lady-ish or powdery. Dry down: Still beautiful. I am swooning! Completely dry: This is my first blend with amber, so I am assuming that it's the amber that made this beautiful scent turn powdery. It's not entirely unpleasant, and I so very much adore everything else about Brisingamen that I will be retesting this.
  13. Alethia

    Juke Joint

Wet: I get almost pure bourbon. Not sure about this! Dry down: The bourbon disappears almost entirely, leaving me with a pure sugar and mint rush. At this point, it was pure love. Completely dry: Dill?! What the heck, skin?! Final thoughts: Between the almost overpowering bourbon in the beginning (The Boy looked up and wanted to know if I was planning on making him some of whatever I was drinking ) and the dill when it was dry, this is definitely not for me. So sad!
  14. Alethia

    Stimulating Sassafras Strengthener

This is lovely! Wet, it's pure and strong root beer. While drying, the oak comes out to play and turns it slightly woody, but not overpoweringly. Once dry, the butter note mingles with the sassafrass and turns it into magic on my skin. I don't believe that I'll need a bottle, but I will definitely cherish my imp
  15. Alethia

    Detox

In the bottle, this was the freshest and most amazing lime scent I've ever sniffed. There was no change in the scent from the bottle to my wrist, and for the first fifteen minutes I was in absolute heaven. I adore citrus with passion, and lime seems to be more difficult to come by than other citrus scents. But right around the fifteen minute mark, it disappeared on my skin. Not even a hint of lime remains I'm willing to break out a scent locket to use the rest of my decant, but this is not bottle worthy.
  16. Alethia

    Jolly Roger

From start to finish, Jolly Roger is ridiculously good on me. I was unsure about this because I wasn't sure about the leather, but I absolutely LOVE this. It's clean but kinda sexy; this will be my go to oil for rough days. I also can't wait to try this on The Boy because I can see this smelling even better on him!
  17. Alethia

    Hope

Wet: Beautiful blend of rose and sugar, but not overbearingly sweet or cloying. Drydown: Why hello there sugar. This wasn't an unpleasant scent, but the complete domination of the sugar kind of took me by surprise. I'm not a particularly foody/sweet kind of girl, but I figured I'd keep it on just to make sure. Completely dry: Oh my stars and garters. This has turned into almost a carmelized sugar with a dusting of rose. I couldn't stop huffing my wrist. I need to try all of the BPAL oils with sugar in them now because I am smitten! Love this
  18. Alethia

    Whitechapel

Wet: Lime! I personally love lime and absolutely adored the wet stage. Drydown: The beautiful lime has left and I'm left with something that smells like baby wipes. What?! Please let this scent be a morpher! Completely dry: Pure baby wipes. Ugh.
  19. Alethia

    Harlot

Wet: A blast of cinnamon with only the faintest hint of rose in the deep background. 15 minutes later: The rose has come out to play! The cinnamon isn't as strong, but it's still pretty powerful at this point. Dry: What a beautiful blend! I've never tried a cinnamon scent before, but I absolutely love the way this is melding with the roses on my skin. I feel sexy, and the boy seconds that sentiment, even offering to purchase me a bottle. Love this!
  20. Alethia

    Faith

Faith was my first true BPAL heartbreak. I absolutely adore violets, and in the bottle this was a beautiful violet candy scent. But it did not play nice with my skin chemistry because for the whole 90 minutes I wore this all I could smell was grape Benadryl I'll try this again layered with Hope; if that doesn't work, I'll let it age. But I have a sinking feeling that Faith and I were just not meant to be.
  21. Alethia

    Lucy's Kiss

This review should probably be prefaced with a disclaimer: I do not like scents with a lot of throw (I don't want my perfume announcing me. If a scent is strong enough for other people to smell without being relatively close to me, then it is definitely not for me. On to the review! Wet: The spices were bashing the rose over the head with a crowbar here while yelling "I'm king of the blend!!!" Dry: Still no rose. All I get from this is spice, which made me slightly ill. To add insult to injury, when I walked into my living room to get the boy to smell it, he was already pinching his nose as I entered the room. Off to the swaps this goes!
  22. Alethia

    Katrina van Tassel

Wet: The honey is all I smell at first, with only the barest hint of rose far, far in the background. Dry: Wow! It morphed into beautiful creamy-honey goodness with the rose grounding it and keeping it from being overpoweringly sweet. This is a really beautiful scent.
  23. Alethia

    Persephone

Wet: This had me honest to gods swooning. It's a beautiful blend of sharp pomegranate and soft rose (and I could have sworn I got a whiff of lemon). Dry: Persephone doesn't morph on me but stayed the same beautiful blend. I was ready to propose to Persephone and be (nearly) monogamous for the rest of my days. But unfortunately, my skin ate it and within 45 minutes it was gone I mean, nose pressed all the way to my wrist and nada. I will definitely be trying it again (in a different pulse point, maybe) and as a room/linen spray, because it really is a gorgeous scent.
  24. Alethia

    Two, Five & Seven

Let me preface this review with a few disclaimers. I am a huge rose fan. I also prefer my scents to have a small amount of throw (I do not want my perfume to announce me, as it were ) With that said, I really enjoy Two, Five, and Seven. Wet: Very sweet rose. I was worried at this point, because I don't enjoy overly sweet smells. Dry: The sweetness has calmed down quite a bit and the rose comes more to the forefront. I've seen mentions of Turkish Delight in previous reviews, and I concur. Verdict: It's a lovely scent, but I'm not sure how often I'll actually reach for this one. But I will let it age before sending it off to the swaps.
