Miskatonic University Soap (by Silk Road Trading Company)

Misk U is my favoritest perfume, EVAH, so I was really looking forward to the soap. I unwrapped it slowly and carefully, and admired the beautiful bar. Sniffing it, it smelled a little...well...funny. Huh. This morning, I showered with it. It's obviously very high-quality soap, sudsed well, and left my skin silky smooth. However, it didn't smell like Miskatonic University. It smelled of...well, sweet oil, with a bit of bite to it. No coffee, no dusty books. Wah! After I toweled off, if I put my nose up to my skin, I can smell sweet dustiness (though still no coffee, wah!), but while I was washing? Nada. Weird. ::sniffs arm::Mmm, old books.

    Brown Jenkin

This was a little dusty in the imp, and on my skin it bloomed into strong, sweet incense. Very, very strong - a little overpowering, in fact. Hours later, it's still over-sweet. Not unpleasant at all, but very much not for me.

    Enraged Groundhog Musk

In the imp, this was a slightly 'off' cocoa scent. On my skin, this turned sour and funky and piercing. Yuck! Not for me.

    Boomslang

I'm echoing everyone else in the thread, I'm sure, when I say that this smells like the best parts of Snake Oil and Velvet. Mmmm. Long-lasting, too, and with a low-to-medium throw, it's like wearing chocolate silk.

    Saw-Scaled Viper

In the bottle: Whoa, this is sexy. Spicy, rich, luxurious. Dabbed on my skin: WHOA. This is hella strong. I'm pretty sure people across town can smell me. A little dab'll do ya, yea, verily. It has a big rush of cassia and ginger, strong and a little overpowering. But happily, it starts to ease off as it dries. Dry: The rich vanilla of the Snake Oil comes out, with a veil of cinnamon over it. Smells very like Morocco, actually. Yum! This is delicious, and I can only imagine how beautiful it'll smell when it ages up a bit.

    The Agony of Loss

In the bottle, the cedar is very strong. On my skin, it's all about the lavender and some sort of sweet smokiness, with almost a bit of citrus. This is a very old-fashioned perfume, very feminine and delicate (ergo, not for me). As it dries, the citrus moves forward, but it's pleasant and sweet, not bitter or overpowering. It has medium throw, and the throw is all lavender - the citrus only becomes apparent up close. It smells to me as though it would be the perfect scent for a weeping lover, lying in her dressing gown, head bowed over her faithless lover's thoughtless note of farewell. (After discovering that awapuhi is white ginger, I realize that's probably what I'm smelling as citrus.)

    Succubus

In the imp, it smelled sharp but pleasant, but on my skin? ::shudder:: It turned at once to the most bitter, vile potion, rising like a poisonous stink from my skin. I couldn't bear to let it dry, and ran at once to scrub the hideous stench from my flesh. I didn't like it. It didn't like me.

    Black Ice

This smells, wet to dry, like a commercial men's cologne. Must be vetiver.

    Snow-Flakes

In the imp, and wet, it was a delicate sweet mint, with just a hint of vanilla. It reminded me a little of 'Snowblind'. As it dried, the vanilla disappeared, and it took on a more aquatic feel, cold and watery, with the very faintest breath of sweet flowers. Very like Snow White, yes, only without the coconut note.

    Bakeneko

In the imp: This smells so very familiar. ::sniff:: The most commercial-smelling BPAL I've ever sniffed. Wet, the tea leaf flares for just a moment, and then the cardamom overtakes it, with a hint of cinnamon beneath it. Dry: Oh. Oh, my. I recognize this. It smell exactly like one of the perfumes I used to wear in college. Either "Opium" or "Poison" (the former, I think), without the harshness of the perfumer's alcohol. Wow, that takes me back. I smell like a dried stick of cinnamon - not that this is necessarily a bad thing, you understand. I'm just trying to get past the personal references to decide whether I actually like it or not.

    Trick #2

In the imp, this was smoky and dark, but not sharp or unpleasant. On my skin, though, it was all PATCHOULIPATCHOULIPATCHOULIOHGODGETITOFFME. I scrubbed three times, and I can still smell it, and it's killing my sinuses. Ugh. Not for me.

    Treat #1

In the imp, this smelled just exactly like a Jolly Rancher. Seriously. On my skin, it swiftly turned to a sweetsweet vanilla with only the faintest hint of fruit. Huh. Go figure.

    Lucy Westenra

In the imp, this was very commercial-smelling. On my skin, it was a gentle blend of lavender and rose. Very feminine and light - it had very little throw, and was quite pretty. Unfortunately, it turned a little soapy at the end.

    Harvest Moon 2006

Wow. This is such a complex fragrance; I don't know where to begin. Every time I sniffed my wrist, it had changed, moving from apples to brilliant sunflower to some smoky fruit to sweet autumn flowers. It's beautiful and brilliant and dammit, why didn't I order a bottle of this when I had the chance?

    Oya

In the imp, this was a little sharpish-smelling. On my skin? Well, initially, it was OMFG!ALMONDS! Almonds, almonds, almonds, almonds. About fifteen minutes later, it was Yankee Candle fake-spice hell. I really disliked it. I griped about it the whole way to drop the kids off. But in the hour and a half that it took, something happened. Now, it's this dark, spicy plum scent, very subtle and feminine. Soooo not for me, but I'm not running to scrub it off the way I wanted to when I first put it on.

    Et Lux Fuit

In the bottle, this was pure sunshine. As soon as it hit my skin, things went wrong. It went on a little sharp (I think that's the heliotrope), and began to amp up horribly. It's giving me a headache, though the sharp scent has faded in favor of blooming amber. I can smell the lemon peel through the slightly-powdery amber, but I smell no vanilla musk, and no honey. I'll revisit in a bit, but I don't think this is for me.

    Jezirat Al Tennyn

This smelled...like wet clay. But not in a good way. It also gave me a raging headache. I think "dolorous" pretty well describes how it smelled to me. I ran and scrubbed it off.

    Lolita

In the imp, this was acrid, bitter oranges. On my skin, the same. Once it dried, it smelled like bubblegum flavored with bitter oranges. Gross.

    Y'ha-nthlei

In the imp, this is a fresh-smelling aquatic scent. Certainly not the dark, fathomless depths I expected. Unfortunately, on my skin it smells like generic dish soap. ::sigh::

    Lyonesse

In the imp and wet on my skin, this was a dead ringer for BBB's Warm Vanilla Sugar. But once it warmed up, the amber deepened the scent, bringing it out of the realm of the super-sweet into a darker, more complex scent. It's a little masculine, but still feminine enough for me to wear. I think it'd make a great daily scent.

    Recommending a BPAL pumpkin blend...

I suggest buying Pumpkin Queen instead of Jack. Jack smelled like rancid butter on me - but Pumpkin Queen is divine. I've bought three bottles of it, which is unheard of, for me. The Pumpkin Patch #3 is also nice, if you like candyish-sweet scents.

    The Snow Maiden

In the bottle, this was all snow. Wet, it smelled a lot like Skadi. I even did a little happy dance because I thought it would be a good substitute for my beloved discontinued blend. Alas! As it dried, the pine faded swiftly out, to be replaced by sharp ylang-ylang and snow. Now, half an hour later, it's still a sharp flowers-and-snow blend, with no berries in evidence. ::sigh::

    Ozymandias

In the imp, this was sharp and a little acrid. I dabbed some on my wrist, and lo, and behold - sandalwood. Yup, pretty much single-note. Weird. Once it dried for a while, there was a pleasant musk scent that joined it, making it smell a little masculine. It had a very low throw, and didn't last long, but it was pleasant enough while it lasted.

    Chimera

In the imp, I smell...vanilla. Is there supposed to be vanilla in this? It's sweet and thick-scented. On my skin, I'm slapped upside the head with BIG CINNAMON. The throw is enormous - the way it amps on my skin, people across town can probably smell me. After I scrubbed myself down a bit, I'm left with a sweetish scent of cinnamon-incense and vanilla. I don't know how often I'll wear it, but I quite like it.

    Wolf Moon 2004

Wolf Moon went on aquatic and clean, kind of a fresh springy greenish smell. It had absolutely no throw - I had to have my arm right up to my nose in order to smell it. After fifteen minutes or so, I noticed a faint masculine spiciness, with maybe just the barest hint of greenery behind it. Not at all what I expected.
