  1. This is a rich tobacco blend and although wood is not listed, it reads to me as smoky tobacco wood. I try to discern the clove and the patchouli, but the oil is so well blended that i can't distinguish any particular notes. Really beautiful smoky (verging into charred) tobacco blend with faint hints of unsweetened dark chocolate. The drydown reminds a lot of Solstice Scents's Maplewood Inn.

  2. I have been using this oil for the past 3 months and i was trying to figure out what does it remind me of. It's in the same family as The Deep Ones, but with a more sandy texture. I associate this blend with crushed seashells and salty ocean water washing over the seashore sand.

  3. Lysander is a smoky woody lilac benzoin. It smells a bit like caramel, but i think it's the tonka that gives off this impression. Over time the sweetness goes away and you;re left with smoky lilac musk.

  4. Can't believe i haven't reviewed this before. I became a BPAL fiend in May 2011 and among my first BPAL purchases was an aged 2005 or 2006 bottle (white paper label) of Snake Oil.I heard all about the excitement surrounding Snake Oil and i had to experience it myself. After i finished my aged bottle, i purchases another one in May 2016 from the Lab and let it age and today i cracked it open.

I will say that in order to experience the beauty of SO you have to age it from 1 to 2-3 years.

Snake Oil to me is an exotic, slinky concoction that may read as incensy, but to my nose it's a spicy resinous vanilla with a tingling sensation. Having tested this throughout the years, i've come to the conclusion that it contains vanilla, patchouli, musk, benzoin and possibly some other spice.

All in all, it's a unique oil in the sea of BPAL blends and any vanilla aficionado should try it..

  5. 2006 release

This is such an ever-changing blend, Sometimes i get the resins coming to life with a pale shadow of rose, other times i get a sweetened candied rose (not the soapy variety). The resins must consist of frankincense and benzoin. Definitely try before you buy scent.

  6. I had high hopes for this one. I love frankincense, beeswax, sage, and balsam... but something in this is making it smell very peppery. I can't stand pepper in my perfumes most of the time, and this is no exception. Maybe waiting for the drydown would make it awesome, but I don't think I can wait to make it there. Sadly, I'm going to have to wash it off. :(

i had the same experience with Engine No.93.

I think that the frankincense lends the peppery quality to the overall final result. Black pepper stinging frankincense.

  7. I get a feeling of white leather or suede OR it could be some sort of white musk. I can honestly say that this is a clean polished white suede blend. It reminds me of the White Rider, but with no leather in sight. For some strange reason, each time i smell it i get the chicken legs image in my head
