    Beachy, Tropical Scents

Can somebody recommend to me some good "tropical" bpal fragrances for the summer? So far I pretty much like anything Bpal comes up with that contains plumeria or is 'tropical' in some way. I like Machu Picchu, Delight, Muse, and also Pele, and Thalia. I wear most things with these types of fruity/floral/ tropical smells. I want to feel as though I'm sitting on a big beach, slathered in coconut oil and drinking fancy boat drinks while smelling big tropical flowers. Can you tell I'm a pisces? All of the fragrances I listed before are great, I'm just looking for new stuff to try. I'm a big fan of jasmine (obviously..), tuberose, gardenia...

    Red Tide

I agree that this is similar to blue fire. There is something in this that turns a little windex-y on me but I do enjoy it anyway. It has a fun, boozey/fruity feeling to it. I wouldn't wear this out but it's fun around the house. I can see this being quite captivating on someone else whose skin doesn't do the weird cleaning chemical smell.

    Brisingamen

Brisingamen does an odd transformation on me. When I first put this on, it is a clean, non-descript soap. Then, suddenly after about 20 minutes in, it becomes incredibly spicy and the florals start to show up. This is kind of sexy, in an earthy, clean/soap way. I enjoy it but I don't know if it is quite "me"- I generally like loud honking jasmine or tuberose scents. I am keeping the imp though, I can see this being charming in autumn with the leaves changing- it's the kind of scent you'd wear on a walk in the woods with your honey on your arm and a thermos of hot cider in your hand.

    Machu Picchu

wow, what a fun scent! I first wore this to a summer garden party, so it stays associated in my mind with good times, hot sun and a wicked hangover. Nevertheless, I love this! It's so amazingly intricate. There's a sort of "fresh" lemony/dryer sheet twist to this one, which normally is not the type of scent that I go for. Still, something about the tropical notes in this evokes a sense of adventure. There is something aquatic here, and lush. It's a very humid, jungle, green scent if that makes sense. I am having trouble identifying any other note than the amber, which is soft and golden. To me this evokes not Machu Picchu, but Chichen Itza- a lower altitude, more rain, more heat, more green. A fabulous scent for summer or for the days in winter that you want to imagine your way out of. Something in the lemony/fresh notes would help this work as a unisex scent as well. This is somewhere in my top five and I don't even think it contains jasmine or tuberose (my favorite notes) but I might detect some plumeria, which is another favorite.

    Black Butterfly Moon

What an oddball scent! This changes depending on my mood- it's as if it has a personality. Sometimes it is all moss and swampy darkness, other times it takes on a very heavy orchid sweetness, similar to Calvin Klein's euphoria minus the pomegranate. It has a light-ish throw, and the currant note seems to come and go on a whim. That ephemeral nature is very butterfly-like, and the bottle is beautiful. I can't decide if I like it or not but it is a work of art regardless. I wanted it for the gardenia which on me is all but invisible. How mysterious!

    Whoso List To Hunt

I really, really wanted to like this one, I imagined it would smell soft and woodsy. However, it was sharp and sour on me in the way that roses and musk together sometimes smell like B.O. eww. I can see this maybe being nice on someone with the right skin chemistry but was awful on me- swampy musk and mosses and stale rose.

    Khajuraho

I was excited to try this because of the florals. Sadly for me, my skin turns nearly everything to soft, dry sandalwood-perhaps it's why I wear brutal Jasmines so well. This is quite nice regardless of being different from my expectations; it's very soft and I agree with the "head-shoppy" reviews- in a nice way. However, I'm getting no florals, no honey, no date palm, it's all sandalwood. Very soft throw, it's a keeper for sure, but it's the kind of scent you wear on a comfort day in pyjamas and not to a date night or job interview.

    Juliet

This is exquisitely blended. It doesn't particuarly smell similar to anything, however I do agree with the reviews that it has some resemblance to the synthetic aldehyde scents so popularized by Chanel. However, paradoxically it lacks that synthetic 'headache vibe' that department store fragrances have. This isn't exactly me, I prefer sexy to 'fresh', but for what it is, it's very well done. I am a Wiccan; I use this on my altar to represent the element "air".
  9. JasminDreams2010

    Caliban

I really like this scent, but it's not for women, IMO. This scent is "all man" on me, I usually only wear very feminine scents. This one was not me at all- it smelled like a boy fresh out of the shower. Would be perfect for a boyfriend or a girl who is a little more "butch" to wear for a clean smell. I didn't like smelling myself and feeling like a dude- but I have a guy friend that played Caliban very impressively two summers ago, I may give it to him because it does somehow seem to fit the character and he did such a nice job
  10. JasminDreams2010

    Kataskopia

Fracas, anyone? I love a good tuberose. To me this is a lot like Fracas, only with sort of a darker undertone and Kataskopia doesn't turn to bubble gum on me like fracas does. Very green, and the name fits; there is something lurk-ish about this. I'm keeping it, should be nice for summer. 4 out of 5 or maybe 4.5 out of 5
  11. JasminDreams2010

    Nymphia

Nymphia is a very nuanced blend, difficult to describe. It is very feminine and lovely. I can pick out the coconut, mango and lavender right away, the other notes fade into the background but do not disappear. This is quite different from the scents I usually like (I'm a heavy floral girl), but I am keeping it regardless. Initially it was very sharp but that wore off quickly and I'm glad I waited. It isn't one of the ones that just explodes on me, it's a gentle throw. The only thing I don't like about it is the lavender, but that's kept to a minimum and isn't a dealbreaker here. I can totally see wearing this at a wedding. When you first apply it, it's sort of fruity, but on me anyway (my skin makes everything smell sort of dry and sandalwoody), it isn't all that sweet. It dries down to a very soft, gentle coconut floral. The coconut is almost dainty in this, and doesn't seem to do that weird stomach turn thing that coconut sometimes does. The overall effect is like white spun clouds of sugar and musk- but without actually being "sugary". Curious.

    Black Dahlia

In the bottle- musk, amber, a sharp mystery note. On- at first this is all magnolia, loud, white, large but as it dries, there's a dark undertone. This morphs into a sweet dark amber/orchid. Sexy, but -at least on me- not much of a throw. It's sexy in a quiet- stranger- in -a -bar kind of way. Lovely, dark, but subtle. I love jasmine, I bought this for the jasmine, but I smell no jasmine at all. So- jasmine haters might be safe. Jasmine or not, though it is a keeper for me. Pity this is discontinued, it is very pretty
  13. JasminDreams2010

    Queen Mab

This is really nice. Not exactly me- it's very thin and sort of a dainty floral, not what I would expect given the title. I like it but wouldn't wear it much, gave it to a friend. It's well blended, and I think it would smell great on the right person.
  14. JasminDreams2010

    Siren

This is kitchen sexy. Vanilla, ginger, it smells like baking cookies, like you're at home waiting for your man in an apron and nothing else. I'm not the foody kind of girl though, I like whammy florals, and I can't smell the jasmine in this at all. This reminds me of a more earthy version of Tocca's Brigitte. I like this better, and it's less expensive. At first, in the bottle it smells almost like patchouli, which isn't listed. I don't care for patchouli, so if you're put off by that original almost masculine note, it does fade pretty fast. Not full bottle material for me but I'm keeping the imp.
  15. JasminDreams2010

    Spellbound

I wanted to love this. Florals do well on me, as does musk and amber. However, on my skin it turns into basically a wet blanket, I don't know how else to describe it. I gave it to my friend and she thought the same thing, and gave it back. I do believe this might be lovely on the right person. I want to find a good home for this one. Scale of 1-5 1.5- just yucky.
  16. JasminDreams2010

    Jezebel

This is an imp I took a risk on, partly because of the name. Women get such a bad rap in the bible! I generally like florals or maybe florals with amber or dragons blood but orange blossom is not my personal favorite Jezebel has lovable elements- on me the sandalwood is very soft, the orange blossom doesn't get too loud, and the rose is a nice, sensual variety instead of the weird acid flatness that sometimes happens. However, it just doesn't last long enough or have enough throw for my liking. On a scale of 1-5, 5 being awesome, I give it a 3.5 I'm re-editing my review of this. It's so funny how time changes an opinion or skin chemistry or something. This has become my recent #1. I am not minding the quieter throw now, and the honey/sandalwood has begun to last well on me. The people that gave this reviews saying that it is sickly sweet do not have my skin chemistry, so if you're worried about it going too sweet, give it a try anyway. On me it is not sweet at all- the sandalwood is the dominant note. Something about my skin turns everything woody- and that's what this is on me, a soft, oriental, woody floral. This is absolutely perfect for summer months, it's relaxing. I think there must be some aromatherapy action happening with this because it makes me feel warm and happy. I'm re-rating it a 5.

    Carnal

Carnal is pretty. Other than Faiza the Black Mamba, I don't usually care for foody scents (I like loud florals), so I didn't expect to like this one particularly. It is well done for what it is, it smells natural and earthy and not too potently sweet. A must have for any orange lover. However, after about fifteen minutes it totally disappears on me. I swapped.

    Faiza, the Black Mamba (2006)

This is positively slinky. I feel mysterious and confident wearing this. It is a difficult scent to describe, very complex and to me, none of the notes stand out. I love Jasmine but to me this is not a jasmine blend. If you have ever tried Bvlgari's Jasmin Noir, this is actually somewhat similar, though to me neither are strongly Jasmine based. I was somewhat worried about the oakmoss at it tends to turn medicinal on me, but on my skin, it's a dark, slinky amber with some hints of fruit and very faint florals. I agree with other users that describe this as somewhat gender neutral or masculine. I tend to stay away from those, but this one works, I think it could be either masculine or feminine depending on the wearer. If scents have a color, this is definitely green. Good for sexy night wear, don't think I'd wear it to the office. Quite possibly my 3rd favorite BPAL ever.. second to Delight and the newly released Antheia though I wouldn't compare this to those at all, apples and oranges.

Scent Recs based on your PERSONALITY!

Sundog- I'm still kind of new so there's a lot of scents I haven't tried yet... but I think you might like some of the ones that I associate with outdoorsy/ozoney/air/water storm notes if that makes sense- leanan sidhe, ulalume, ode to melancholy (which goes bitter on me but not my friend) and actually himerus is quite nice with the juniper and sandalwood smells if you like green smells. maybe if you can track down some queen mab that might be worth smelling also. Also- the lab's lotus is pretty.

Aquatics - scents of the ocean, the sea

There's something aquatic about La Belle au Bois Dormant- it's very feminine and sort of a fruity floral but to me it is evocative of a clear deep pool. I have gotten many compliments on that one from men.

Scent Recs based on your PERSONALITY!

Hello, everyone, I'm somewhat of a newbie, I will go ahead and try to answer these. Olephaunt- You sound deep, stable, feminine. I suggest Jezebel, three brides, and unicorn for your forest romping. AlphaB1tch- I think you need something a little unconventional that wouldn't be mistaken for a department store floral. Absinthe, Bastet for something sweet, and Ulalume for an otherworldly vibe. darlingdiva27, I see something sweet and sexy- possibly a dragon's blood compound. Dragon's Milk is lovely. rumandkerosene- Hymn to Proserpine is a rich, complex, sexy scent.. and not floral at all. if you like sort of unisex scents, thy godfathers present is sort of a nice, herby aquatic and not manly in a bad way. venusinfurs- I'm suggesting black rider for vanilla-y, dark fragrance, and titania for a feminine fruity floral. titania is good for day, and black rider is a good nighttime scent. katarina- this is totally instinctive, for no particular reason I want to say French Love. hello kitty- for something fresh and original, bella donna della mia mente might be nice. as for me- I'm a 29 year old witch who is getting an undergrad. I've had many odd jobs. If you've read it, I think my personality is a lot like the main character Smilla in Smilla's sense of snow. I'm sort of a loner, but I want to change that. I don't have domestic inclinations. I tend to have strange sexual encounters rather than relationships. I like either younger or older men. Someday I would like to meet my partner in crime: for me love shouldn't be sitting on the couch every night watching movies, but rather wild sex, road trips and making art. I like travelling. I love the sea, and the woods, and small towns. I live alone in the forest with several cats. I work very hard but I'm also a person that my friends call at 2 am for bizarre night time adventures. I am absolutely restless and it's hard for me to sit still. I am a wiccan. I am a gym rat. lookswise people have compared me to gina gershon, mary louise parker or kari byron when I had red hair but none of that really fits, I have sort of an odd family nose. I'm not pretty exactly but sexy in sort of a dark way. I think I'm one of those people whose looks fit their personality. I like form fitting clothing but not too girly- leggings or jeans and thermal shirts in jewel colors and boots is pretty much my uniform. my hair is brown on top and hot pink underneath, it's pretty long. I generally get along with everyone but people have told me I am hard to get close to. I have been told I am hard to read. I am incredibly emotional but don't really show it. I am a pisces, but I think i fit more of my chinese zodiac, which is a rooster. I spend time outside whenever possible. Sometimes I find myself in odd situations because I go hiking alone, I can be careless at times. I sing and play keyboards. I write poetry, and I'm writing a novel. I am going to school for something completely unrelated to writing. i am pathologically afraid of being controlled or confined. I love driving, my silver saturn ion is pretty much my best friend and it gets great gas mileage. I am torn between utter communism and extreme individuallistic ayn rand libertarianism. Chaotic good, politically I suppose... perfumewise, I like loud smack you in the face florals, anything feminine. I like bpal because I am vegetarian, they seem socially conscious as a company. also, I have an intense fascination with Stevie Nicks.

    Titania

Titania is exquisite. I am usually a fan of bold in-your-face florals, and Titania is not one of my signature loud jasmine or gardenia blends at all but I liked it enough that it's on my bottle list. If any of the notes are more prominent, I would say the sweet pea is most dominant, though the other notes work well to create a blended effect that is more than the sum of it's parts. Titania is sort of a sweet, girly-girl princess scent but has a sophistication that absolutely lends itself to it's faery queen namesake and keeps it out of the teenybopper cavity-sweet realm. It has a "cool" tone... the fruits smell as though they're iced, and the florals are subdued and yet fresh. The whole thing has the scent effect of a bright spring morning with chill in the air, dew on the grass, and also reminds me of some mystery faery potion. It is not sexy per se, but it is alluring, and exotic, and sensual. LIke the 'fairy princess next door' type of appeal. You could wear it on a date, or a picnic, or to work, it is user-friendly. I actually got a compliment from my chiropractor with this scent. He is something of a naturalist, and he liked that my perfume smelled like flowers instead of synthetic chemicals. I guess he thought it was weird that a lot of women that came to his office smelled the same- with bpal scents I don't worry about smelling like everyone else- even if I'm wearing the same oil.

    Dragon's Milk

Usually, BPAL's vanilla and I are not friends. Somehow it turns sickly/medicinal/fake sweet on me and makes whatever scent I'm trying a scrubber. In Dragon's Milk, however, this is candy sweet in all the right ways. The dragon's blood adds depth, the honey makes this seem almost edible. It seems to have decent staying power as well. Normally I'm a floral girl, but this is a great comfort scent. I may get a bottle for the cozy fall days when I want to snuggle with a blanket and cocoa. For a sweet scent, there's something sexy about it, though it's sexy in a pyjamas-by-the-fireplace kind of way, and not as much a night at the club. Editing to add: trying an aged imp of this and bam- it's my Holy Grail! 😍 Smoky dragon incense and sexy honey -wow...

    La Belle au Bois Dormant

La Belle au Bois Dormant is absolutely stunning. This is such an odd blend, it has so many layers. I can pick out the plumeria throughout, but all the other notes seem to shift and turn, and I can't place them. I don't get any rose at all- and for me that's a good thing. At first, this smells sharp and greenish, maybe as a result of the magnolia. In the bottle, the sharpness is predominant. After wearing for a little while, though, especially in warm weather, this perfume does an about-face (on me, anyway), and becomes a dewy, light musk with the sweetness of fruit, and the plumeria wafts out a little, positively lovely. Oddly enough, I get a lot of compliments from men on this one. I say oddly, because in my experience, men seem to like vanilla or sweeter fruits or heavy musk/spices and not the light florals. For some reason, though, guys seem to prefer this one on me. I have narcolepsy, so the name of this perfume is fitting for me, it makes me laugh. It wears well through all of my naps, and has a decent throw. Potent, for being such a light scent! I think it induces sweet dreams. This was a must-have, I've almost used my entire bottle. A good one to wear to bed.
