    Samhain

Samhain 2007 I bought a bottle of this from a forumite and a bottle of 2011 to see if the years were any different. I decided the 2011 was more masculine and gifted it to a male friend. I don't want to review 2011 because my skin didn't seem to like it but I think that was me rather than the oil. On me it smelled like black, deep pine and it went a little medicinal. My friend liked it though. 2007 on the other hand- totally different ball game. 2007 is to me the scent of the dried leaves and the mullein walking through the autumn woods. I still think it's a bit masculine but I will definitely keep it for ritual use and for future samhain rites. I can smell the pine, the leaves and the spices but the apple and pumpkin bring some warmth and depth to the blend, saving it from being either too foresty or too much like my dad's garage. Very herby, very natural, very dark, and I would only be in the mood for it at specific times- that said it really hits that autumn feeling smack on the nose.

    Chuparosa

I've been wanting to try this one for a while. I do like my florals In the imp: Ok- this has the same plasticky-green-windexy note that didn't work for me in 'come to me'. On my skin, it somehow smells a little more 'fresh' than what I normally go for- sort of an herby/weird/sneeze inducing thing. On me this is not unlike bath and body work's butterfly flower, which I liked but also gave me a headache. After about five minutes a sweet, pretty floral scent starts coming out, so I'm glad I didn't wash it off right away. It's pink, somehow, and a little aquatic. Maybe some lily of the valley in here, but I can't detect any rose. It gets more warm and more feminine. Again, I'm not a fan of the fake flower/plastic note but i have a sneaking suspicion this will change and improve as it ages and do that lovely honeyed floral thing that 'follow me, boy' does. I'm going to re-test in a month or so.

    A Ginger ale scent?

I will second mother ginger, and also suggest Siren. While Siren is a little more warm/ginger/vanilla, I think it might appeal to ginger-ale lovers as well. good luck

    Best "look at me" scents?

Sacred Whore of Babylon. Also, Dragon's Heart, and Delight. I love my loud florals!

    Lady Amalthea

I was very excited to try this one- I had no idea whether it would work or not. I love tuberose and white musk but usually foody notes are not so great on me and I wasn't sure about the lilac and wisteria. In the bottle- a pale mint, like mint chocolate chip ice cream. first minute or two- sharp, vaguely floral mint. Pretty! after the scent warms up on my skin it begins to morph. Somehow, there is something delicate and herbal about this scent. The florals are there but soft, almost watery. I definitely agree that this is a winter musk- it's like a bright winter afternoon in the forest. I can start to pick out the tuberose. oh, ok here come the lilac and wisteria. All of a sudden there are ghostly purple floral notes. This is very ethereal, wispy, like a glowing purple phantom in the snow. I agree with the other reviewer that called this waxy, there is something waxy somehow in the scent as well. I feel that this has a pretty large throw and lasts quite some time. After I slept on this scent overnight I could smell it powerfully around me in the morning, not just on my arm but the glowing purple ghost smell in the air. I like it! I am keeping this and getting a backup bottle. It's definitely a mood scent, and I am feeling melancholy these days so it fits. This is truly Lady Amalthea, and much more like what I hoped the last unicorn would smell like (that one turned all swampy oakmoss and overpowering candy-sickly sweet on me.) This is a masterpiece, an elegant, sorrowful, ghostly creature.

    Xiuhtecuhtli

Dry, sacred, complex, luxurious, a little mysterious. I bought a bottle on a whim unsniffed and I am so glad! To me this smells like a worship blend- something to wear in deeply contemplative meditative states. I would wear this if I have the fortune to go to Mount Shasta again. I am not getting jungle from this as much as desert- arid climate with scrub brushes and a beating sun- somewhere you go for a showdown with your shadow self. I agree with the above reviewer that wants more plumeria from the lab- they always do such a lovely job with that note in such inventive ways. This ain't your grandmother's plumeria, though. I can smell the orange and what must be the copal, but the flowers are breaths, bare hints. In the bottle- sinister bitter orange, patchouli- two notes I generally avoid but magically work on me here. first five minutes- the orange sweetens and comes alive on my skin. I have the type of skin that turns everything to sandalwood, which is nice on this blend. It becomes creamy, smoky orange drydown- some of the florals begin peeping out. Oh, this is sexy but it does hang a bit close to the skin. 4.5 out of 5- the .5 points were deducted because I would ideally like a bit more throw. This one lasts, though, it wafts for quite some time. I wanted to give this a thorough review because it's a very beautiful, evocative blend. Not my usual cup of tea; normally I like sweeter, bold florals like delight or sacred whore of babylon. I am a pisces and this screams LEO! to me in bold capital letters. I would wear this when I want to borrow Leo's confidence and shimmer. I think this is totally perfect for a sun god. I could see this working on a guy.

Call it a broken heart, a break-up, heartache...

khazakant- here's to your your healing heart. I fall for straight women sometimes, I know what that's like. I agree Hemlock honey is a good choice. my heartbreak scent is the hanging gardens. It's like nuzzling into warm earth in a pile of figs and flowers.

    Blue Morpho

I really wanted to LOOOOOVE this, and I DO, but it's just.... I don't know, missing something. It is beautifully blended, I can pick out the violet leaf and agave. The amber steps out from the shadows after a little, otherwise, the florals meld together in a scent that is both lush and fresh. It has an airy, spacey feeling to it. It smells green, aquatic, like sea foam on skin with a floral breeze, and almost the sting that aloe has when it's fresh. However, with the pikake and lily I was hoping for something with more Oomph. I think it would be exquisite on someone else. I think you might like this if you like fresh scents that are vaguely floral but don't want a FLORAL!!! if that makes sense. off to swaps

    The Hanging Gardens

Interesting.......... very very interesting. When I first got this as an imp with an order, I just thought it smelled like incense. I had read all the reviews and really wanted to like it but felt it was too monotone and rose for my taste. Sure enough, though, as with many other bpal fragrances, there is a depth and complexity to this oil that is not necessarily readily apparent. It took 3 or 4 tries to actually get a handle on what this scent was doing. It changes like quicksilver! To me, this scent and Machu Picchu are tied for the most morph-y scents I've ever tried. It is well blended so that it's difficult to pick out one note, but at times the rose makes itself apparent, at times I smell gardenia, at times fig. There are woody, fruity undercurrents to the scent so that I don't really feel as though I get the same whiff twice. Generally speaking I prefer more dominant florals (my skin turns most scents very dry and woody- somehow even the fruitiest florals become sandalwood on me). However, this is a really great mood scent. Somthing nice and ripe for a humid summer evening. - I am editing to say that this is becoming my comfort scent- it's nice to fall asleep to. The gardenia and rose are really soft and sweet and have a warm feeling to them somehow. I think this might induce pleasant dreams.

Thanks those are neat suggestions. My favorite so far is Sacred Whore of Babylon but Pele is great! I want to try eden and the zieba tree as well.

    masculine florals

you could try thy godfather's present. To my nose it is very masculine- a cool, fresh aquatic floral.
  12. to me, Ulalume is wintery. It reminds me of starry nights. So was Zorya, but I believe they just dicontinued that one..

    Suggestions Based on Pictures/Images!

So- here is my picture. Phox- I agree that you're gorgeous btw. I've been biking and working in the yard and I'm sweaty and covered with gnat paste but the moon is swimming into pisces and I feel really like myself so I took this tonight. see if this works...

    Suggestions Based on Pictures/Images!

Phox: I could actually see Black Dahlia here. Some kind of smokey rose. Also, maybe Jezebel (honey, orange blossom, roses) Eos- for something softer (jasmine and musk) Three Brides- again with the orange/rose combination Brisingamen- a deep rich amber Pele- a soft, tropical floral I could also picture London working really well - tea rose and Persephone- rpse and pomegranate and maybe Black Butterfly Moon and as far as non-bpal, Pacifica makes a really nice Nerola orange blossom perfume. I would like to do this too- how did you post the picture? (I have a Mac)

    Sacred Whore of Babylon

This is hands down the most confusing BPAL I have tried thus far. I got a frimp from the lab two times, and it didn't really seem like my thing upon first sampling, then I got a full bottle later after some deliberation from a forumite, which was in the older blue bottles. I don't know if the aging process is good for the scent, or if it was reformulated but the bottle I got smells amazing on me, better than both lab imps. Go figure. I'm glad I made the purchase. Upon first sampling this smelled like either cinnamon cookies or perfumed lavatory soap. Neither is particularly my thing. But I wore it out last night for the first time and it was all beautiful, lush, jungle air, gardenias and spice. On the drydown it goes a little vanilla-y sweet but it is amazingly beautiful. What an odd duck of a fragrance. It seems to change with my chemistry. Overall though, this might be my go-to scent for a night out on the town. (maybe not as much for a job interview ) I am editing this to add that this has surpassed all the others to become my favorite signature scent ever! It has that special something that just blends right with my body chemistry. i only regret that it doesn't come in 55 gallon drum size.

    Pomegranate V

Sweet heavens, I was NOT expecting to love this one as much as I did. I usually go for sweet, heady white florals and excessive fruits or things like vetiver frighten me. Also, as I am testing this oil, it is 95 degrees and humid- a scent that is suited better to fall than the summer heat. Still, despite the weather and my usual preferences I am really floored by the beauty of this scent. It is the essence of fall in a bottle. Despite the obvious pomegranate/dark fruit scent, it is not sweet nor overly ripe. This is a dark, sexy, spiced pomegranate. This is what Bath and Body Works Midnight Pomegranate tries to be. Some note- maybe the neroli- adds a breezy scent. This is like standing in an orchard in autumn at night, with dark fruits swaying in a midnight breeze. The air is smoky from a nearby fire, and you're plotting your next exciting halloween prank. I can't wait for fall to break this out for longer than an afternoon. Even in dead summer though, this shines and does not overwhelm.

    Sugar Moon 2011

I really wanted to like this one. Gardenia and orchid are total winning notes for me, usually. In this one though, what I get is a sharp, bitter plum, a sort of sweaty rose, and the orchid is beaten into submission in the background. On me this is simply bitter, like plum wine that's gone to vinegar. I can see this working on another person's chemistry however. This is definitely a winning combination- for someone else!

Scent Recs based on your PERSONALITY!

filigree_shadow: you know, oddly enough i wasn't in love with Titania at first but now it's all I want to wear. Good suggestion..

Scent Recs based on your PERSONALITY!

Asphydel- try Nymphia, if you can get your hands on it! Necromanticize- try blue fire
  20. Hello- I hope this is the right place for this question.... Can y'all help me find a scent ( GC so I can keep ordering it!) that has the same sort of fairy evocative quality of Titania, but is more appropriate for autumn? It doesn't have to be identical, note-wise. I am just really loving Titania right now, and keep getting compliments on it but was hoping to find a slightly 'darker' version for the fall. I'm kind of considering a bottle of hymn to proserpine but want maybe a little more of a floral/herby potion. cheers, thanks

    Tiki Princess

What a curious, layered scent! In the bottle, it smells purely like pine. On first application, there is a heavy scent of the cool coconut from the description. I am getting a little of the skin burning sensation that other users are describing but on me it's more like a tingle- not a dealbreaker. There is something almost marshmallow-ey about this. Somehow the pine scent comes through without smelling entirely like a christmas tree. This is laid-back, dreamy but unfortunately I can't get any of the plumeria whatsoever. This layers beautifully with Thalia (one of my favorites). This is like a minty nymphia.
  22. JasminDreams2010

    Thalia

I think this is in my top 5: (which are so far Delight, Antheia, Muse, and La Belle au Bois Dormant, and now this.) To me, this is very similar to La Belle au Bois Dormant, however they are dissimilar enough to warrant separate purchases. I bought the 5 ml of this- used up the imp very quickly. It is the more "daytime" version of La Belle, it is bright and sparkly instead of lush and languid. I wear both by the gallon.. and have received compliments on both. I only wish that it was just a tad longer-lasting, there is a slather-factor here that will make that bottle go pretty quick. Plumeria FTW! I think this is a very good choice for the muse of comedy/ good cheer. Very "happy" scent.
  23. JasminDreams2010

    Pele

Pele is very beautiful. It seems initially like a one-note pikaki perfume, and it reminds me of kuumba made's pikaki lei, however there is a subtlety and depth too. I don't think I'm getting a big bottle- it's a little light for my taste and it seems to fade in minutes on me but I am definitely keeping the imp. I just wish it were a little longer lasting and had more throw. 3.5 out of 5 2017 update: my skin chemistry changed, goddess bless! The white ginger is now heating up on me to make this fragrance a spicy hot bottle of awesome. My hands down favorite. Somehow I can smell this fragrance now. I'm so glad I gave this a chance, now that my skin isn't eating it, it smells like heaven. I now have a big bottle and want backups. So much love

    Beachy, Tropical Scents

Thanks, everyone! These are some good suggestions... I have tried Pele, I like it but it disappears on me. I am very eager to try either Tiki Princess or Tiki Queen and also Coral Snake. I also want Manila I never even would have tried Lady of Shallott- interesting suggestion
