    Ogun

This is really gorgeous! I definitely get a strong melon note, but I think I'm getting the juniper showing through, as well, as it gives it a sort've tart juiciness that is just wonderful! I also can get hints of the gin (it's not overly boozy, though, which is nice), with the other notes playing nicely to just give it a bit more depth. As at least one other reviewer commented, I don't notice the honey or the chili pepper. Definitely one of the more odd/different scents I've tried (I'm not sure it merits my hunting down a bottle, but I will definitely be using the imp!)

    Valse Finale et Apotheose

Initially, I got honey and apple blossom--and it is as lovely as I'd hoped it would be. The mint worried me a bit, as I had no idea how it would play off the other two notes, but as I caught a few hints of that within a few moments, I realized that, surprisingly, it works amazingly well with everything else. This is a gorgeous, light scent. I can easily see myself reaching for it on those days where I want to feel downright pretty.

    Cake Smash

I finally got to try a decant of this via swaps (thanks again!) , and was hoping I'd get awesome red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting and a hint of the dorian, snake oil, etc...however, on me this is almost all dorian--I get hints of red velvet cake, but they're so faint as to be almost unnoticeable unless I'm really looking for it. So, while this one's still pretty, I already have a bottle of Dorian--I'm afraid it'll be off to the swap pile with it, in hopes of it finding a home where it will get more love!

    Highwayman

I can only assume that this is vetiver (I've always been somewhat cautious of blends where vetiver is a strong note), when I first apply-right off the bat, it's all I could smell, and I wasn't sure I liked it. However, BPAL has taught me the smell on initial application can be deceptive, so I stuck it out..and I'm glad I did! I don't pick up as much leather as I'd like, but the florals start to come out quite quickly...no cinnamon yet, either, but then I only applied it a short time ago (I will update later, if it morphs). It's smokey but with the florals tempering that, which I'm finding makes it totally wearable, for me. I never thought I'd describe a scent thus, but this is definitely a more masculine sort've floral--I think I really do like it, though! Not sure this is one I need to have a bottle of, but I'll definitely be using the imp!

    Count Dracula

I mostly get clove and wood notes with this one--but the other notes play into it just enough that this is one of those scents that I wouldn't change a thing in--I spent a bit of time tracking down a bottle after snagging a decant, and it's one I wear only for special occasions (because I don't want to use it up any faster than I have to!). It tends towards the masculine (as in, would love to slather a gorgeous guy in this scent), but I find it wears gorgeously on me, as well. One of my top 5 scents, for sure.

    Puck

I snagged a bottle of this in a swap just today, after deciding I wanted to give it a try (I'd never tried a blend that listed 'civet' as a note, and was curious to see how that particular iffy note would play on my skin). This is definitely a scent that strikes me as feral, musky and earthy (as the last reviewer also said, I think)...I actually find I like it, though--I think this will be one of those scents I wear more for a day where I plan on not going out with a lot of other people, since it's not a scent that would be everyone's cup of tea. Very glad I managed to get ahold of a bottle of it, though! EDIT: I feel a need to point out that this is probably the longest-lasting BPAL scent I've ever tried! I applied it yesterday, and even though this morning I attempted washing it off (I wanted to wear something different today), I've still caught whiffs of it throughout the day.

    The Soldier

Red musk, vanilla cream, black tea, black pepper, leather, and pie. I bought this even though the combination sounded like it could go incredibly odd on me...and am sooo glad I did! I mostly get creamy vanilla red musk with leather...and the pie crust. I don't notice any of the anise some reviewers mention, nor do I detect the pepper. I'm having a tough time explaining in detail what I smell with this--all I know is that I love it.

    The Arabian Dance

This is a perfume that lived up to what I was hoping it would be! (It's super-fresh, since it just arrived today...will be checking it again in a week or so to see if it's changed at all) In the bottle, I got almost straight-up leather, which I thought would be fine...then I applied, and it was practically a leather single-note, to my nose...and while it wasn't terrible or anything, (I like leather, and it's a lovely leather smell...but I'd been hoping for something more) really didn't think it was me (which was disappointing, since this was a scent that, from the notes listed and other reviews, seemed like it was going to be an instant favorite). However, much to my delight, it didn't take long at all for a gorgeous spiciness to start to meld with the leather--and once it hits that stage, it's gorgeous. I don't notice any coffee or hazelnut, although I think I'm picking up hints of the tobacco in here, along with those middle eastern spices and that gorgeous leather. Definitely a keeper (and I think I may just have to pick up that second bottle I debated!).

    Wolf Moon 2011

This on me is mostly juniper berries--tart, but also very delicious smelling (and yet, it's not what I'd classify as a foody scent, at all), with a distinct chill. As the day went on, I do catch hints of the woods, and the musk, but they're very soft, and definitely not at the forefront. Not at all what I was expecting (I was expecting mostly wood, with some musk and possibly warmth from the 'blood', with only a hint of the tart, juicy berry, if any of it at all), but I find that I'm loving this blend all the same.

    WILF

On me, this was so similar to snake oil that I had to put some of that on a different spot, to compare--WILF is gentler, and less in-your-face, but a close cousin, scent-wise. As time went on, I caught faint whiffs (if I pressed my nose almost up against my wrist) of some of the other notes (nothing strong enough for me to be able to pinpoint exactly what other notes were coming out to play, although I swore I finally caught tiny hints of mint, awhile in). Very nice, but I'm not sure I'll be keeping it, (I keep asking myself if I really need two scents so similar)...I'll have to age it a bit to see if other notes start to come out, since it is very fresh.

    What scents are masculine? Gender-neutral?

Count Dracula. I love this scent, period--but I definitely think that if I were to encounter a man wearing it...I'd follow him just about anywhere. lol. Kinda hard to find, but soooo worth it.

    The Lion

My only experience with this scent is from an aged imp (I got it from a very kind forumite, and they'd written on the imp label that it's from...06, I believe?), but this is going to be a bottle purchase for me, definitely. Amber is one of those notes that, when it cooperates, is lovely--spicy and warm and leaving me sniffing discreetly (hopefully!) at my own wrists. This is a blend where it behaves itself, and doesn't give me that 'perfumey' sort've feel that it tends to in blends where it like me as much. I definitely get the leonine feel of this blend...it's amber, with a nice cinnamony/spiced note (not overpowering like cinnamon candy or anything), and a soft fuzziness to it. Not at all sharp, but very cuddly and warm feeling. Just what I needed today, as it's cold and icy outside.

    Red Musk

I'm loving this thread! Some of my fave red musks to-date are Fenris Wolf, The Infernal Lover, The Great Sword of War...and of course Snake Oil-but this thread's given me a few more red musk blends that I'm going to have to give a try (some of which I'd managed to overlook in my wishlist/musings of blends-I-need-to-try-sometime)

    The Byronic Antihero

This was the one halloweenie that I would have bought no matter what the notes listed were--the name/theme of it alone were enough to make it a must-have. With that said, package arrived today! (and I've had it on for maybe 10 minutes...so I'll update the review if I find the oil behaves differently after it's settled for a week or two, or if the scent morphs as I wear it.) In the bottle, it smells somewhat perfumey, but not enough to be off-putting. Once it goes on, after only a couple minutes, I smell pure carnation--and not the carnation I'm used to smelling (as another poster mentioned, I also have a tendency to find that 'carnation' scents go spicy on me)...instead it really is a true-to-flower carnation scent, with something (I don't know which note) giving it a bit more depth. Fortunately for me, since this was one that the notes didn't really influence me on, I really am liking it so far!

    Hua Mulan

Pink musk, white ginger, tea leaf, night blooming jasmine, bergamot, and leather. This is one of those scents that I've been keeping an eye out for awhile for, and managed to snag a bottle recently of--having just applied it for the first time, I'm getting a citrusy floral (it's not a strong in-your-face citrus, or floral, but a really gentle, pleasant combination of the two)...I'm hoping to get a bit more leather and such on the drydown, and will update if the scent morphs much on me as time goes on. Overall, this seems like, if it stays true to initial application and drydown, a scent I'm going to really enjoy on these hot summer days where I want something light and refreshing!

    Katrina van Tassel

This is beautiful. Rose scents are a type of floral that I really love...when they smell more like the actual flower, as opposed to a more perfumey sort've scent (with that hint of stem/greenery, as if it's fresh-cut). As with many other reviewers, I get a lovely fresh-cut white rose, but it's also sweet and creamy. It didn't really morph over the course of the day, and while the throw wasn't huge, it was decent, and I could still catch whiffs of it at the end of the day, which I always appreciate. Definitely a keeper!

    Tiki Princess

Wow! I was on the fence about this one-it sounded like one of those scents that I might love...or utterly dislike, since coconut is a smell that I can go either way on. However, I'm definitely glad I took a chance on this particular scent, as I love it! In the bottle I get a very strong coconut, with only a hint of florals (it's not a fakey/plasticy coconut to my nose, however)...but once the perfume oil goes on, I get more of the florals, with the coconut being there, but more as a supportive scent. It smells to me like what a tropical island paradise should smell like.

    Coyote

I love musks, and the imagery of this particular blend appealed to me, so i was incredibly pleased that the scent works well on my skin, also! (all the more so since I bought a bottle unsniffed!) I get a lovely, almost floral (but not quite-fleeting glimpses of flowers among the grasses, perhaps?) dusty grass smell...I do get some wood, too--at first I was getting more forest than plains from it, but that faded out pretty quickly to leave just a hint of the wood, softened by the definite presence of the musk. If the amber and doeskin are there, they're not overpowering, just there to help balance out the other notes. The scent lingers on my skin for a long time, but I do wish it had just a bit more throw, as I think this has to be one of those instant favorites, for me. So I guess to sum that rambling up (I'm sniffing my arm as I describe this, haha), I primarily get dusty, dry sweet grasses and soft, touchable musk, with hints of the doeskin, amber and wood. Edit: how I failed to mention that the amber lends this a somewhat perfumey note, at least initially on me, I don't know--I'm not usually a huge fan of the more 'perfumey' sort've blends, (and amber can tend to be like that, for me) but in this blend, I found I didn't mind it, as it wasn't really overpowering.
  20. #245: I haven't tried this on yet, as it really doesn't smell like me in the bottle (however, before sentencing it off to swaps, I'll have to do so, at some point)...so I'll update this review when/if I do so. I'll also point out that I am pretty terrible at reviews, so keep that in mind as you read this, lol. With that said, at first sniff, in the bottle, I get a tart watermelon candy smell (so that fake watermelon flavor-smell...it's actually almost exactly like watermelon flavored warheads, if you've ever had those...just with a lot less of the tartness). There's no bitterness, however, which I do get from warheads. Something about it really makes me think of summer, but I definitely don't think it's a scent I'll wear.
  21. Same thing, for me--and I'm hoping that things continue in that vein as well. lol.

    The Harp of Cnoc I'Chosgair

This was one of the few 5ml bottles I bought from the lab in my first order, and is one of the few BPAL bottles I've ended up buying a second one of, to hoard. I'm still new enough to things that I can't pick out the individual notes like some people do, but to me it smells like a hot summer day, laying out in the grass. It's a sort've sweet, green, fresh-cut grass smell, with creamy golden overtones...and on me, at least, it has pretty good throw, and lasts all day. Absolutely love it. EDIT: Having finally gotten and tried L'Estate, I have to say that the two are very similar (I wouldn't call them identical, by any stretch), in that they both have the same rich golden tone to them.

    Severin

I snagged a bottle of this off ebay, after reading the scent description--I LOVE earl grey tea, and the lab's leather notes, as a rule, I love. Having just applied some of the oil to the back of my hand a short while ago, I'm surprised, right out the door--I don't get earl grey tea, really--I get a licorice/anise smell, tempered by a sweet lemony undertone, with just a hint of the leather and black tea to round out the scent. So, while it's nothing like what I initially anticipated (and if it morphs/changes as I wear it longer, I'll add to this), I'm finding that I really do like it, anyway.
  24. i know it's the black musk but incubus smelled very similar to black temple burlesque. i get zero cacao for black temple and a lightly sweet black musk from incubus. Try Haunted. They are VERY similar to my nose Thank you for the suggestions! Gives me a couple more scents to try~

    The Black Temple Burlesque Troupe

Cacao, black musk, and tobacco absolute. This was my first introduction to BPAL--and what an introduction! This has to be one of my favorite smells, ever--it's a rich chocolate, without getting too foody/sweet...I can definitely smell the tobacco (my skin loves tobacco scents), and that and the black musk add a wonderful edginess to this. I love the way these notes blend with one another! The only issue I have when I wear this scent (and it lasts all day), is that I find myself surreptitiously sneaking sniffs of my arm!
