    A Thought from Propertius

In the imp this did remind me a bit of March Hare, but sweeter and with a cinnamony-peppery spiciness from the cayenne. The honey is light and herbal rather than being thick and syrupy, and the apricot has a juicy, candy-like vibe on my skin (most fruits get candied when I wear them). This would be a really pretty summer scent, just offbeat enough to be interesting...right up until the skin reaction. Damn, the bright pink patch in the crook of my elbow suggests off to the swaps with this one.
  2. Oh, this gives me hope, I love tea notes, but usually they end up blended with things that don't work well at all. Insects didn't seen to have any death notes.

    Sic Erit

In the imp and wet the geranium is very much dominant, but since it's a floral that doesn't go completely wonky on me, I can deal with this. The red musk follows close behind, and underneath that I can just make out some wood notes peeking through. After the drydown, I'm still amping the red musk, which is only a bummer because I hang around with people who can't stand it, but coming up through the musk, the woods and amber are blending into that import-store-incense-that-sinks-into-everything-aura that I was hoping to get with Chintamani. Since I can't wear it often I won't need more than my decant, I think, but it's definitely a winner for me, and it should age beautifully.

Recommend the most herbal scents, please

The <censored> Galbanum SN is an incredibly woody, green scent to me, like crushed fresh stems and leaves.
  5. Can't help you on the chocolates, but I had a decant of the first incarnation of La Vita Nuova, and it and Delirium didn't smell similar on me. I actually prefer Delirium, but it seems like much more of a distinct-notes-you-can-smell-simultaneously where La Vita was more of a smoothly blended perfume smell. That may just be a skin chemistry thing too. Inez was in the same scent family for me...unfortunately my skin chemistry changed and now I can't wear either.

    Chintamani-Dhupa

Definitely not what I was expecting (the aura of import store incense) but quite lovely. Wet I definitely get the aforementioned apple comparison, plus a hint of fresh green (maybe the pine?), but that seems to burn off pretty quickly on me, and the drydown is a sweet/fruity/slightly powdery/slightly warm wood scent, with just a little astringent bite if I hold my nose right on my arm and sniff. This is so blended it's really hard for me to pick out specific notes once it's dried down on my skin and there doesn't seem to be much throw; overall it's just a soft, slightly exotic scent, something I can easily wear around people who aren't fond of some of my more unusual scents. I don't know that I'd need a whole bottle, but it'll be worth tracking down another decant or partial. eta: at least for me, the honey was a non-issue--my mom hates honey notes, but I wore this around her and it didn't even phase her.

BPAL for fancy, elegant and formal occasions

Not sure about what scents to recommend (since my beloved is not a scent-wearing fellow the idea of complementing has never come up), but for how to wear it, my typical application point is at the creases of my elbows, and I don't have any problem smelling that through a shirt.

    I do love cedar...

Ah, body chemistry...patch on my skin *has* a very cedar-y smell.

Spice me, baby! The spiciest BPAL blends

Clemence for me is straight up gorgeous chai-in-a-bottle. Like starfish, ymmv, of course, but that's the most pure chai scent I've found.

Geisha in Orange Kimono Admiring a Samurai

This started out beautifully on me, bright sweet citrus with a little bit of a floral vibe behind. I never really got the sandalwood note, but as the orange burned off I guess I amped the tuberose because I got all floral all the time, and although it wasn't an awful floral note, it was very sweet, strong, and it hung around for quite a while. It's pretty, but not for me.
  11. skyelyric

    Voodoo

On first application, this was a bizarrely gorgeous scent on me--like a glass of lemon-lime soda with a bottle of almond extract poured in: fizzy cool citrusy almond extract. I'm not sure about it now that it's dried down; there's basically no throw, and what's left on the skin is very sweet, a little powdery/plasticky, a little almondy, a tiny bit spicy, but I think overall a bit too muddled for my tastes.

    The Chicken-Legged Hut

Sadly, I get no grains, woods, herbs, or anything out of this, and I had such high hopes... My skin did to the Chicken-Legged Hut the same thing it did to most of the metamorphosis scents I've tried, which makes me think there's a sugar note in here somewhere. All I get from this on my skin is a sweet, acrid, burnt-chemical funk.

    The Black Temple Burlesque Troupe

Cacao, black musk, and tobacco absolute. Ok, that totally explains it, did not know black musk went lemony and I was very confused about what I'd put on ...I just got my decant and dove in. Wet and first applied it was...inappropriate tootsie rolls--the cocoa is very distinct, but there's an air of raunch behind it that keeps this from turning into foodie hell. The cocoa burns off very quickly, and what's left is sweet and musky and a bit citrusy. I was worried about the tobacco because it doesn't generally work on me, but this is staying mellow, rather than amping up to choke me. I'm not sure this will be a favorite, but it's so interesting and hard to pin down I keep sniffing my arm.
  14. skyelyric

    I do love cedar...

Aureus to me is a gorgeous cedar-y wood scent (I've been known to layer that with O and basically get 'Sex in a Cedar Chest'). If you like spice/cinnamon, Sin might also be worth a sniff--I know it's patch, but it has a very cedar vibe to it for me. Magus is nice as well. Tombstone also has cedar, but depending on what you amp you can get a sweet rootbeer/vanilla vibe from it. Still nice, but not woods. There's also a wood recommendation thread here if you haven't browsed that, yet.

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

late to reply, but I know someone mentioned that the 2009 LE Season of Ghosts smells a lot like Australian Gold sunscreen to them. Just a warning, it's pretty hard to track down.
  16. skyelyric

    The Death-Horse

This is truly a bizarre scent on me. And apparently, now I can narrow down the culprit, since I got the same cornchips-cumin-and-canned-chilis effect from this that I did Clytie...I've worn some lily of the valley scents without incident, but apparently the Lab's note does not fare well on my skin. Alas.

    Woods in Winter

The 2010 blend is one of my favorite Yules, but when I got to test 2011, it just wasn't as good, I can't pin down why, it just wasn't as crisp and sweet to me or something. (I liked Cloth of Gold much better than WiW '11) To specifically review the '10 blend...the hemlock and juniper are very present, but not in a particularly whack-you-over-the-head-with-pine way, and the snow adds a very cool and sweet tone to this. There's something almost hinting at floral without actually getting there. The overall impression is gently pine-y and sweet, a touch powdery (it has something of a just-showered soap vibe, but I actually like that in this case.) And it complements Paintbox's Yuletide Mariner soap wonderfully.
  18. skyelyric

    The Season of Ghosts

this is the most bizarrely amazing scent on me, not because of how good it smells necessarily (I do love the scent on me though), but because it's half my childhood in a bottle. I can't pick out any individual notes, but this smells exactly like our little old condo in Florida. There's something very gentle and sweet, I do get a little of the citrusy feel, and the kind of sunscreen that didn't smell like coconut. I'm hording my couple of imps for when I want to smell home.
  19. skyelyric

    Melon scents?

Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat is more of a honeydew, but it's a very melony scent. There's also something about the bamboo note in Habu that makes me think watermelon.
  20. Sudha Segara, the Lion, and Coyote are all very warm, comforting scents to me
  21. skyelyric

    There can only be one!

Well, if you're a honey and red musk fan, and want a Weenie, Third Charm is pretty much a shoo-in. fiery red musk, luminous elemi, East Indian patchouli, champaca flower, cedar incense, ho wood, and hemlock accord sweetened with a peculiar sweet honey. On me it's pretty much exactly as advertised (and gorgeous), and the honey is the same rich, syrupy honey as in O, to my nose. Rogue is a beautiful soft leather scent, but having not smelled the others you mentioned I don't know if there's any comparison.

    The Lurid Library

This is bizarrely pretty on me--actually the first mainstream perfume-esque scent that has worked. The book part of the library manifests as a soft powdery overlay and the rest of the scent on me is the vintage perfume thing. I know some people have mentioned Chanel, but on me this is a dead ringer for Shalimar, which makes me happy. On me, this stays fairly close to the skin, not much throw at all, subtle and quite lovely.
  23. skyelyric

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

The 2012 Lurid Library is nearly a dead ringer for Shalimar to my nose (my mom even agreed, and Shalimar is her most-worn scent), only with a little bit of a powdery vibe overlaying.
  24. skyelyric

    Sweet lemony floral?

Delirium came immediately to mind for me. I think it's lemon, rose and apple. Baobhan Sith is another one--think it's grapefruit, not lemon, but it's a fruity, light floral scent to me. (I'm also a huge fan of Embalming Fluid--not floral, but citrusy and very clean) eta: compromise! How about Aelopile from the Steamworks? Glowing amber and citrus, labdanum, verbena, cedar, and oud.

my sw 2012 questions and answers

Do you like s'mores and s'mores-flavored things? not particularly. marshmallows around here either get roasted and eaten just like that, or made into rice crispy treats, or occasionally ambrosia salad. What's the neatest freebie you've gotten? It can be cool or thoughtful or just totally unexpected, and not limited to BPALdom. I have forumites who are pen pals or just friends who have sent things just because. Two of the most memorable are a knit-a-wombat kit (this is why I will learn to knit), and a pair of beautiful earrings that showed up as a congratulations gift because I'd been squeeing about how many gigs my troupe's gotten this fall. Even though I do that kind of thing for people too, I'm consistently blown away by the kindness and generosity of people. Would you enjoy receiving cute but useful items like colorful kitchen utensils/gadgets, or bento supplies? (boxes, chopsticks, accessories, etc?) What about things like spice mixes (homemade, or Penzey's for example) I'll edit this later. Spices are generally welcome, I love to cook. (just not a big fan of things with fennel or anise in them--I only like licorice in licorice) As far as gadgets, I have to think about this. I could always use another tea ball. (I have one, but I have a teapot upstairs and down and carry it back and forth. ) Do you like cute, seasonal or fluffy PJ bottoms? Like they sell at Target, Old Navy (they have had cute Halloween ones!) If so, what size do you wear? I love t-shirt fabric-type pj bottoms (size L) I have a pair of happybunny ones that are on their last legs. What kind of chocolate do you like? Nuts, no nuts, white, dark, etc? prefer dark and white to milk, generally speaking, though I'll eat most chocolate. <grin> I do like nuts in chocolate, fruit, etc., just not really big on salted chocolate (caramels, yes, chocolate, not so much), and I have ZERO desire to try bacon chocolate. I live near a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Penzeys! What does your little heart desire from any or all of these places? If any place has ground/powdered marjoram, that would be a lovely thing. Interesting spices, snack-type foods, teas are always welcome. (we have a whole foods here, but not the others) Are home made foods acceptable or does the idea of eating strange mailed food disturb you? bring it! as long as it's not likely to be a science experiment if the post office delays it, it's all good. (recipes are wonderful too) I just gave you $20 and sent you into a "has everything" store ala Walmart and told you that you have to come out having spent it all, and none of it on anything you need. What would you buy? Be as specific as possible! purple or blue magnetic nailpolish, a bag of gold bears, if they had a garden center, i'd probably blow the rest on plant stuff, if not some nice soft yarn i don't remotely need (or <very sheepishly> if they had one of those panini sticker album books for Brave i'd probably do that--i got a packet of stickers in the dollar store swap and i'm fighting the compulsion to find a book and fill it up) What kind of cuisines do you like? (I mentioned this in my ?aire but curious what my witch may like)And, what are your favorite restaurants? I like a little of everything, various Asian cuisines, Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, Tex-Mex, Greek, some Italian, and of course US southern. Favorite restaurants around here are Chili House (which is a local pan-Asian kind of place), a good local pizza place, the pho place...as far as chains, my favorites around here are Five Guys and Garbanzo. I'm from Canada - is there anything specifically a witchee might like that is only available here? can't think of anything specific, but i'm always curious about local things. what are your "fandoms" and would you like a t-shirt from TeeFury if an appropriate one came up? i don't know that i follow anything enough to really be considered a fandom. i love star trek (classic, TNG, DS9), lord of the rings, world of warcraft, calvin and hobbes Do you have an eReader and if so which one? negative Do you like candles, or tart burners, or something? If so, what's your favorite scent to burn? i do but i'm pretty well stocked right now, i like fruit and spice and christmas tree scents about the best. Marzipan? i like it, don't necessarily need it sent since i'm attempting to make my own this year (we used to make it when i was a kid, who knows how it'll work now, of course) Would you be interested in washable/reusable muslin “paper” towels (basically muslin squares hemmed around the edge)? Maybe in some sort of box to put on your kitchen or bathroom counter? i absolutely love the idea, i'm just not sure i'd have anywhere to put them currently Do you drink alcohol and if so, would you be OK with your witch sending you homemade infused vodka? i do drink, vodka's not my favorite form of liquor, but if it were flavor infused i'd be cool with that (infused whiskey would also be win) If you get me (or a fellow Aussie, if there are any playing this round) as a witch or witch's minion, would you like to try some Australian specialties, such as TimTams (delicious chocolately cookies), Caramello Koalas (koala shaped chocolates filled with gloopy caramel), Australian native spices or anything like that? i am intrigued by the idea of aussie spices. i am fortunate enough to have a specialty store in my town which periodically carries tim tams, so no shipping is necessary =) If your witch is a knitter, crocheter or sewer, is there a particular type of garment you would love to receive (hat, scarf, wrap, cowl, socks, fingerless gloves, arm warmers etc)? I would adore any of the above. I've never made/received socks or slippers, so that would be a novelty. I do love fingerless gloves/armwarmers in the winter. Heck, I love all of the above, honestly--I have to rotate scarves so i can wear all the awesome ones i have. Is there anyone else in your house (kids, pets, partner) that would really appreciate a small gift being included for them in the switchwitchy haul so they don't feel left out? I don't think anyone around would feel left out. Since it's been mentioned several times, and I've also offered to nacho witch some, would you you like to receive wild rice and or maple syrup? I promise to include recipe ideas with the wild rice. I love food/cooking stuff, so that would be awesome. I have 5 bushels of tomatoes sitting in the kitchen right now that are supposed to turn into red sauce tomorrow, so would anyone like a basic red sauce (spaghetti sauce) to make its way to them? homemade food goodies are always welcome Would you be interested in having a bat adopted in your name? bat, other critter, clump of trees, etc., it's all good, i like the idea of helping causes. How would you feel about a taste of (insert witch location here) box? I love that idea, I did the travel swap last year and absolutely loved that. Some of your favorite artists? Classic and modern? hold that thought If you could have an image or certain subject painted for you on any type of "canvas" (on a box, on paper, on a canvas, and so on) - could you point your witch to some of these images? and that one Is there a GC scent that's been on your list for ages but keeps falling off the bottom of your order because of the LEs? Nanshe, and I keep thinking I should order a backup bottle of Aglaea before it would get discontinued. Neither is a priority since I have a couple imps of one, and a partial bottle of the other. I've been getting into indie nail polish brands recently. What's your favorite indie brand of nail polish? Or what's your favorite mainstream brand of nail polish? Or are you not big on polish? I have no concept of indie polishes. My (pretty ridiculous) collection consists mostly of the Sinful Colors polishes at Walgreens. I have probably most of the non-creme ones. I prefer metallic and frosty polishes over cremes or anything that's so much glitter it's impossible to get off. I do admit I'm intrigued by the metallic stuff. Stuffed things: yea or nay? <3 New Question: mix-in-a-jar? How to you feel about cookie or cake or soup mixes that come in jars and you just add, like, an egg or water or what have you? love it Would you be interested in beer, wine, or other specialty beverages from your Witch's area? or tea, or other non-alcoholic stuff. i'm pretty equal opportunity Are there any crafts/skills you've wanted to learn but haven't gotten around to? And if so, would you be interested in supplies and tutorials? I want to play with ALL THE THINGS. Seriously. If it's crafty and I can play with it, I want to try. I'd really love to learn to spin at some point (drop spindle) since I do so much yarn stuff. Who here would be happy to get a lil' sumthin sumthin from Adagio Teas? I drink a lot of tea, so I'd love that. Do you Ravelry? And if so, what's your handle over there? Would you be interested in gift patterns from your queue? I'm firechild on Rav, think most of the stuff in my queue is free patterns, though. I live near this very cool Retro store (retrodrygoods.com) (you can order online too) - are there things from it that would make you squee if your witch sent them? some of the retro candies are love. things like clove gum, licorice allsorts, the honees drops (specifically the milk and honees--i used to *love* those things when I was a kid) I don't do much in the way of retro decor or anything. Who likes Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses? my pumpkin spice tends to stay in the form of bread and pie. What does your kitchen look like? Colors/style? earthtones, stone-look tile, wood floors, wood cabinets, the added-in decor is pretty much whatever we felt like, nothing particularly matches, our dishes and utensils are the same ones that have been around since i was young, etc. Witchee, what are your favorite quotes? Put your iPod/MP3 player/what-have-you on random and list the first 10 songs it plays! What's one random thing you really like and one random thing you really dislike? random things? hmm. a random dislike is embarrassment. I absolutely hate being embarrassed/humiliated, and I hate seeing it done to others. (for me, strangely, this includes things like having the wait staff sing happy birthday, etc. i honestly want to crawl under the table. a random thing i love? the smell of really freaking cold nights, all ice and woodsmoke. Are there any herbs that you haven't been able to lay hands on that I could send you? There's an herbal shop I really like here in NYC called Flower Power (flowerpower.net) that has quite a wide selection. I can't think of anything that I would need. If there are no "witchy" shops near you, is there anything I can pick up for you from Enchantments? I'm pretty clueless regarding most of that stuff still. Hey Witchee! I want to send you a delivery. It could be cupcakes from a local bakery, it could be a singing hugging bear-a-gram, it could be a bouquet of flowers. But it will be something that you need to be there to receive. a) Are you OK with "special deliveries"? *waggles eyebrows* B..) Is the address in your questionnaire the best place to reach you for said deliveries? c) If the delivery requires a phone number (as say, some florists do) would you be OK with that information being tracked down by your Witch or asked of you anonymously? Things that show up at the house are fine, my home address is in my q'aire, if you need my phone number, sure, just ask. I would however, be distinctly *not okay* with singing messages, strip-o-grams, anything that puts me at the center of attention/makes a spectacle. What are some things you are OK with receiving gently used or homemade, and some things you absolutely do not want if they are gently used or homemade? no used undergarments or socks, please, otherwise i think it's all fine. as far as homemade, if it won't turn into a science experiment in the mail, it's fine. And now a new question: I live near a Mast General Store (mastgeneralstore.com). It has lots of vintage-y toys, southern foods (jams, jellies, spices) and vintage candy. Is there anything I can get for you? I love jams, preserves, honey, local specialties, pickled veggies. culinary things are always welcome. Do you have any Fall or Halloween traditions? harvesting my herbs and setting my garden to rights for the winter, i don't have any halloween traditions of my own as of yet, though i do make a point to set aside time on the day of the dead to meditate and honor my loved ones who have passed Ninjas or Pirates? dragons =P
