    Third Charm

reading the note list i was guessing that this would fall somewhere between the coiled serpent and smut on my skin. in the imp: a bright, sweet red musk. getting a lot of floral out of this one, but not of the i'm a pretty, pretty flower variety. wet: yep. first blast is what i wanted smut to smell like. it's the berry sweet style red musk, but it's pretty dirty. it's not skin style dirty though, just a lot rougher and darker than what smut does on my skin. the head shoppy incense that the patch, champaca, and woods does on my skin is lurking in the background. dry: honestly not a lot of throw. and there's nothing in here that i would call fiery with my skin chemistry. it is a nice blend, even if it does lurk on the backside of powdery-it's almost going amber on me so i'm guessing that this is a white style honey. honestly it even shifts towards spanked res in feel every so often. this one really doesn't want to settle with my chem right now. i'd actually like the incense to come back more, because right now it's still a dirtier style smut, but still not as dirty as what i would like it to be. i think i need to just accept that red musk is never going to be 'sexy' and will always be 'preppy' on my skin.

    Screeching Parrot

so strange. so nice. booze cherries in imp...cinnamon rum on the skin. what's really weird is that other reviews are saying koolaid, and i'm the queen of amping koolaide which i normally love. i love the way this sounds...but it's more like samhain or harvest moon than tropical fruity drink. i almost want more fruity drink from this. actually it really reminds me of garden gnome.

    Queen

It's a clear oil, and I was blasted with wood and herbs in the imp. That's promising. On wet, it's a very dry blend on my skin. There's still a heavy herbal, teaky edge to it. I do feel regal wearing it, but this is not a 'traditional' feminine, princessy blend. This is going to sound weird but it reminds me of Queen Elizabeth or Mary, Queen of Scots- a take no shit queen. Dry, I have to wonder if there is a white floral or white amber in this because it starts to go powdery. I think that this is a power blend on my chemistry rather than a perfume blend because I'm not sure how I feel about the actual scent, but it sort of makes me want to...strut. Not like I feel sexy but I feel...powerful.

    Lolita

oh this is nice. this is a bright sharp....powerful? citrus blend on my skin. i could have sworn that there was rose when first applied, but it settles down to an admittedly young but strong (though not overpowering) citrus. there's a slightly candied edge to it and the white floral feel that vampire tears has. this actually reminds me a lot of vampire tears on my skin, enough so that i would be satisfied to use this as a gc equivilent. it reminds me a lot of crib girls too, just without the honey- so if you can't handle the honey in that one, this one may work. i worked a little with freya today, and i really do feel like this is a good female/feminine energy blend if you're looking for something not traditionally feminine- namesake aside.

    Springtime scents

I don't normally make my bpal seasonal...but I'm longing for vampire tears right now.

    The Goblin Rider

i like this one, and it's one of the few air scents that i can wear. i could swear that there's leather in this though. i think it's the pine working with something else that's giving that impression. the incense in this is much closer to what i wanted midnight mass to smell like. there is something sour lurking underneath it but far, far down. my skin does seem to eat it but i don't think that's a bad thing for incense when i want to wear it to work.

    The Winter of Our Discontent

i don't think that i've reviewed this one before. sometimes blends have more an impression to me than a scent, if that make sense to anyone other than me. i can make out the white florals, with the woods and pines underneath. i don't really get orange off of this one. it doesn't really strike me as masculine, but it's not gender neutral or feminine either. i kept thinking that it smelled like a church but that church wasn't really right either. then it hit me. this smells like a funeral parlor. it sort of makes my skin crawl. it's really, really unsettling. it's actually...freaking me out a bit. this is really, really weird.

    The Black Rider

this. is. torture. king. no. seriously. this is torture king minus the citrus with my chemistry. i have finally found my holy grail GC. and i'm an idiot because it's been sitting in my imp box untested for 2 months.
  9. starfish327

    Old Scratch

amber and lavender, bordering on the medicinal. slighty powdery but not necessarily in a bad way. i think the most unhelpful thing about this review is...i can sort of see...old scratch...smelling like this?

    Oak King v4

this one is so weird...i think that i like it though, it's very much in line with my personality. in the imp and wet, i got a much higher, sweeter smell than i was initially expecting. my head went straight to cinnamon starbursts, if they were ever to make such a thing. On skin, it morphs into pastry, with jam. like a christmas cookie. as it continues to dry the more earthy elements come forward. it becomes heavy on wood rot, leaves, and some sort of freshly cut wood. the scent associations i'm getting from it alternates between old church pews and camping...which makes very much sense in terms of my personal background. i'm not certain i can pull off smelling like leaf rot and church pews but i do think it fits my mental image of the oak king. i think this will be effective as a ritual oil if nothing else.
  11. starfish327

    Dancing Koi

dry and sweet and leathery. there's a hint of wood and something my nose is trying to tell me is fruity but that has to be a note interaction. the leather and the brown musk are keeping this from being too sharp and resiny in the way that sandlewood does on me sometimes. i get hints of clove but nothing really forward. i think that this is more what i wanted fledging raptor moon to be.

    Priala, the Human Phoenix (2006)

Priala is very, very, very nice to me. Apparenty i get along well with the human phoenix. on my chemistry, this is a much more wearable version of slaugh. slaugh is one of my favorite blends but it's definitely an aggressive sasparilla. this is very much the same feel (i'm guessing it's the myrhs and the smoke interacting) but it's much lighter and sweeter. on my skin she's got a definite hit of vanilla which i think is making me think of slaugh. the cinnamon keeps fading back and forth. the blend verges on plastic but it stays far enough away from it to be wearable. very nice.

    more swap questions

weenie order? i actually didn't get to place my weenie order this year but i'm really interested in more samhainophobia and the incensy, heavy ones from the pickman's gallery. Christmas music? yes, please and any type! oddly, christmas music is the only thing that kills my night terrors. i have no idea why. but i listen to it year round when i'm really stressed so i can get a full night's sleep. Rose/mastic flavored things? not rose, but i've had other floral flavored things that i've liked. Anyone else with an Etsy store and a member of Tradeaholics (or you could join) and interested in bartering for gifts for their bunny? i don't have an etsy store but i'm not against trading knits either. my wordpress link in my sig has examples of my stuff. i just need at least a 3 week turn around time- it probably wouldn't take that long but to account for shipping and whatnot- if you want something that's not listed on my trade page already. paint box- not a company that i'm familiar with (really, i don't wander far from my favorite companies but that could change). but these look interesting- guy fawkes, comfort and joy, and the yuletide mariner- i was born in saint john's newfoundland and i'm starting to find myself drawn to that sort of northern seas imagery. i think i'm getting homesick for somewhere i haven't lived in 23 years! Will you be away for any part of the round? just the very tail end- dec 10 and 11th What type of books do you like? Dying to read anything? nothing specific but i love horror anthologies, and the irony of the phrasing is that i'm becoming interested in death as a research topic so nonfic on death/death practices are a good bet since i have nothing in my collection on it other than spook. 26. How do you feel about honey/beeswax? Would you like any? honey, yes, beeswax,no trader joes? eh. i'm not all that convinced by the sounds of trader joes. we have a wegmans that's awesome and aldi carries a lot of trader joes stuff. Would you like a Paintbox from Paintbox Soapworks? If so, which scents? again, i like soap in theory but i really do use liquid soaps more often. NEW QUESTION! - Do you have kids (or kid-like pets) who your fox may want to take into account, either in terms of a little extra goody or simple safety? it's just me, my boyfriend and my beta fish jorge. Who else here loves or would like to try Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics? If so, what would you like? i've honestly never heard of them, but i like trying different eyeshadows. i'm finally learning how to apply eyeliner and i like different colored mascaras. my eyes are grey and the color shifts all the time but i can't wear greens or blues. i shy away from trying foundations/powders because i have both blues and reds in my skintone so i generally just go to sephora and have them match it for me. Have you tried anything from Cocoa Pink and if so, what products and scents do you like or would like to try? i have to admit that while i don't know that company, from what i have heard, most of that type of stuff would be lost on me. however, i love trial sized anything. i'll try anything once. Anybody into nail polish? Any color or formula preferences? not really. If you found a $50 bill on the ground and were to place a Lab order, what would be in it? (And shipping is free through the magical BPAL unicorn!) a bottle of cernnunos (however it's spelled), a bottle of tavern of hell, and imps of nephilim, dee, and old demons of the first class. or a random imp pack of things that aren't too foody or floral. i live in the city of the chicken wing. if i were to send you something savory, what's your heat tolerance (or sweet and heat for that matter). the hotter the better. i don't like feeling my mouth at the end.

    swap questions part 3

Would any Bunny like to receive Holiday serving bowls, trays, platters etc...? Winter/Christmas or Thanksgiving/Fall themed? as much as i love things with turkeys on them, i've pretty much run out of room in my house. I know some people are squicked out at the idea of eating things that other people make, or the thought of deep fried cookies sends them into cardiac arrest. If you were my fox, would you like to receive some homemade goodies, or would you prefer that your goodies came from the store? handmade is completely fine. the only real food allergy around here is scallops. My lovely fluffy Snow Bunny, would you like a bodyscrub made by me? If so, what scent(s) would you like, if you had to think along the lines of essential oils? And would you prefer sugar or salt? A dryer scrub or one that's more oily/moist? sure! either salt or sugar is fine, and any grain is fine. i have horribly dry skin in the winter. scents for scrubs- pretty much anything other than floral or really, really heavy floral. i do prefer them on the drier side. Dear snow bunny, do you like candles? if yes, then what kind? scented (what scents), unscented, what colors, do you like them plain/painted on the outside/with decorations attached to the surface/sculpted? unscented is preferable but i'll burn anything other than floral. all colors would a use. i could use some tealights for my yule log. i don't mind decorations. same with pretty much any style. Also what do you think of little soaps? honestly i prefer gels or scrubs so most soap gets frimped. Socks! Slippers! Do you love them or not really wear them? If you love them, do you also love Sock Dreams? i like little ballet flat style slippers. socks for me are utilitarian items; i don't see the appeal of sock dreams in my life right now...but i wouldn't say no to a ball or two of sock yarn! Dear Snow Bunnies: Do you do a Christmas tree? If yes is it themed or specially colored or do you just have all different ornaments and such? oh my infamous christmas tree. it's white. we've been decorating it in ice blue, royal blue, silver, and white. however i would never be upset if i got decorations in other colors. Would you like a special ornament? sure! would you wear a cowl? honestly? probably not. i have a couple that i made that i'm tempted to tear out for the yarn. Tim Tams. Yay or nay? yes! new question: talk to me of coffee. Whole bean? Ground? Flavored, not flavored? Decaf, whole caff? Favorite roasters? Drip, french press, keurig? BING ON THE TEA? ground would be best but my blender will grind beans. caffinated please! we drink a lot of dark roast and i like spice flavored coffees. we have all three- drip, french, and keurig. we do drinka lot of tea as well, and my boyfriend was looking for hot chocolate last night.

    swap questions part 2

I live near a brick and morter location for a really, really good spice store. would you use cooking spices and if you would, what would you need? (it's penzey's if you want to google it). i just realized i never actually answered the question. i use a ton of pumpkin pie spice, i love their chili 9000 and i love their salt free blends, pretty much any of them. i really want to try their cinnamons. hey swap partner...could you use a new mug? i'm set on traditional mugs but if you could find a clear travel mug with a lid i'd love you forever. Is there any sort of regional food/drink/treat you miss or have always wanted to try? bbq and hot sauces. a friend in nz sent me some habenaro kiwi sauce one year that was epic.

Do you like knitted goods? If so, what would you like, what colors, and do you have any sensitivites or preference when it comes to type of yarn (ex: wool: yay or nay? do you prefer machine washable materials? do you not care?)? any fiber is good except mohair. i don't really care about washibility, all of my handspuns need to be handwashed anyway. colors run to the autumnal . Are you crafty? Do you like to make things? i knit and i'm a handspinner. i like those little craft kits you get at michael's too. Do you wear hair clips, barrettes, etc? my hair is really fine/thin and i gave up on trying to find stuff that will stay in it. Alcohol- yay or nay? yes- just not tequila Do you wear earrings/have pierced ears? nope! Colors- if it shows up on a tree in october I'll like it. My favorite color currently is a rusty orange that blackberry refers to as inferno. I'm a fan of jewel tones. Dried fruit- I eat it but it's not something I normally think about buying. -Would you enjoy a novelty scarf? i love sheep and penguins! i also really love some of the skull/bone cables that are floating around ravelry right now. my original desire for school was epidemiology and i would still love something bio/genetics related. If so, at what level? as long as i can actually wear it, i don't really mind. -Delicate, tough, or it doesn't matter? As in how often do you plan to use it and how rough are those circumstances of use? delicate is okay, though tough would probably see more use. i'm not exactly gentle with my stuff though i can be if necessary (i have handspun alpaca scarves in my collection). Anyone have colors/fabrics they would HATE for me to use in case I start early and don't wait for my person & their info sheet? ...i'm actually a red heart fan. but i'm not really big into the novelty yarns right now unless they're part of a wider project (eyelash, pompoms, things like that). and i'm allergic to mohair. -What scarf-types do you like? exs: Cowl (either the scrunched down kinds... or the tall ones that shield your neck while you wear a jacket), no. they make me look like i have no neck. hooded scarves, sure. there's a couple i like on ravelry shawls, YES. i have a small shawl army. poncho-like, probably not skinny (or wide) and wider than skinnier long (or short) normal scarves, longer than shorter wrap, ...i'm not sure what a wrap scarf even is, but i don't have a lot of sleep right now... fashion types (like necklace-like, or shawlettes), a shawlette more than a necklace type moebius?? more than a cowl what kind of non-knitted scarves/wraps do you like? Length? Style? i like pretty much everything, especially multicolored prints. fleece would definitely get used. how do you feel about ruffles/pick ups? if they're relatively small. otherwise i feel like i look like a walking christmas tree skirt. what are your least favorite colors? ...i actually don't think that i don't have a least favorite, though i don't do a lot of pastels.

Greed. It was straight up polish dill pickle to me.

    Pine and Evergreen goodness

cernunnos. oh my gods how much i've fallen in love with cernunnos. it's what i wanted yule to be.

    Great Grey Witch

in the imp: something sharp...and then...meat?...and then nothing wet: immediately a blast of sharp citrus. much better. i like the lab's citrus notes as general rule. i'm going to guess that it's something close to blood orange. dry:...there's got to be orris or violet in this, and my chemistry must have shifted, because while i identify the note, it's not going horrible dirty skin on me like normal. this is the second blend this week where it hasn't done that. the longer it's on, the more the citrus burns off and leaves a vanilla/violet. the violet's threatening to go sour but something in there is keeping it in check. the sugar comes out a lot more and it keeps shifting between sugar/herbal and the vanilla/violet. it's a lot prettier than i remember last summer. i remember not liking it enough to not want to write a review but for whatever reason my decant was still in my box. either the year's aging or my rather severe shift in eating habits has aided this one, a lot.
  20. starfish327

    Crow Moon

this is a very strange blend on me. it's very definitely high, sharp, and white, but there's something earthy and fruity grounding it as well. it goes on very very painfully sharp and aggressive, and almost overly strong but the longer it's on the more it mellows and grounds. there's a certain sweetness that comes forward and helps to control the florals. the florals actually don't feel like florals, though the more i wear it and the more i think about it this does feel a lot like grief. however there's a certain woody-ness and a certain...fluffiness? that isn't there with grief. i can defintely see both the commerical perfume and shampoo aspects of this blend but it's a lot less off-putting for me that most of the blends that do that. it's a very loud blend though, i'll have to use it sparingly. i will also say that this is a blend that shouldn't work on my skin, at all. there's at least 3 major death notes in this for me- the white musk, the violet, and the cedar. primrose is also really hit or miss on me.

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

the two that come to mind are dana o'shea and cake smash. cake smash on me was way too sweet/cloying but it's definitely cake and it seems to behave better on other people. that and i just don't like smelling like a cake. dana o'shea was much lighter and less intense, but it's more milk and grains though it does have a sweet vanilla feel to it.
  22. crawdad and white rabbit are nothing alike on my skin but it may just be my chemistry. white rabbit went weird spoiled milk on me, and crawdad smelled like blueberries and bug spray.
  23. starfish327

    Loving the frankincense!

i think that there's a resin thread, but faunalia was pretty much a frank single note on me.
  24. yep. i was coming to suggest cernunnos. yes, they have their own threads just for that!
  25. starfish327

    Zombi

periodically there are blends that just shouldn't work, and almost don't get tested because all of the notes just shouldn't work. they almost never work. even with blends where rose doesn't go rancid on me, i tend to just not like it, and dirt's really hit or miss. i'm not familiar with moss as a note but it sounds green and green and i don't play well together. except that zombi works, and it works in a really big way. the only downside is that it is a fairly potent blend and i always forget that when i first apply it. oops. in the imp it's very much classic bpal rose and dirt. on the skin it starts to alternate what's amping and when, so that sometimes the rose is forward and sometimes the dirt's forward. there is definitely a green element there in the background. there's a public rose garden in buffalo where a lot of people get married. it's next to one of my favorite sections of my favorite parks in the city. this smells like that- it smells like late season rose garden where things are starting to wind down.
