  1. After looking through my list of favorites, I realize that two of the very top scents for me are Hod (Resurrected) and Flowering Chrysanthemums. I just love these scents, and would love to find others that are similar. Any suggestions? I think that Tissue is almost in the same category as well. The Harp of The Unpronounceable Irish Name is close, but doesn't quite cut it for me. Similarly, Katrina Van Tassel and Schlafende Baigneuse are in the same general vein. Thanks for any ideas!
  2. We believe that the American dream is big enough for everyone, for people of all races and religions, for men and women, for immigrants, for LGBT people and for people with disabilities. For everyone. Lilith at the Women’s March DTLA, 2018. Nasty Woman? Nah, Nasty Tween: honeyed fig and sugar-dusted patchouli, sweet amber oud, a drop of red currant, and vanilla cream. I always blind-buy at least one Lilith each year. This year I immediately purchased "The dream is big enough for everyone" because I love the sentiment behind the scent (and the notes sounded gorgeous). It's fresh out of the mailbox, but I couldn't resist a quick test. I'll try to add to this review later. Wet: I can detect most of the notes except the vanilla cream. I mostly get honeyed fig with a tiny bit of patchouli. It's not particularly sweet, and fruitier than I expected. It's very pretty and quite powerful. As it dries, I get even more fruitiness with a bit more sweetness. It's making my mouth water!

    Family Resemblance

A quiet moment between a father and his daughter. We might be related. A splash of Tombstone, red velvet musk, and a red licorice whip. This is a lovely fragrance, although not exactly what I expected. I've let it rest for a few days before I posted my thoughts here. I don't really get a lot of Tombstone from this. I do get a certain woody sweetness underlying the scent, but it really doesn't smell at all like Tombstone to me when I sniff them side by side, nor does it have the throw of Tombstone. I was expecting the over-the-top vanilla sweetness in my 8-year old bottle of Tombstone. As it dries, more of the almost root beer sweetness of Tombstone does come out. I do get a bit of the red licorice whips: a tiny touch of anise and a generic red fruit, probably more cherry than strawberry but not prominent. The red velvet musk is not something that red musk haters need to fear, IMHO. I almost get a hint of patchouli? This one is going to age spectacularly, I believe.

Do All the Good You Can

Lilith has been involved with our humanitarian and philanthropic work for several years, helping with fundraising events like our food, toy, and feminine napkin drives; she has taken the initiative a few times now, setting up her own fundraisers for the UNHCR and Pasadena Humane Society. This year, we decided that shes old enough to do the footwork, and she volunteered with us twice in serving those currently experiencing homelessness. This photo is from Christmas Day 2017: Lilith spent several hours helping us distribute food, toiletries, and sleeping bags in Hollywood. Madagascar vanilla and sweet patchouli with Yule pine, white fig, and almond blossom. Initially, this is a blast of almond/cherry and patchouli. Almond never seems to last long, and this is no exception: within an hour, this is a truly lovely, soft scent. It's a warm, slightly powdery, slightly sweet vanilla and patchouli, with only the faintest whiff of pine or fig or almond. Don't confuse this with Banshee Beat: this is clean, gentle patchouli and a very mild, non-foody vanilla. This is a gorgeous, quiet scent that fits its name quite well.

    Winter Landscape with Church

Caspar David Friedrich Frankincense, myrrh, and rose resin drifting through a winter wood. This is simply gorgeous (as is the painting on which it is based). As expected, it's resins and snow and pine, with a hint of rose in the background. The myrrh adds sweetness; it almost smells like there is I some vanilla in here. There is a bit of baby powder scent in this as it dries, possibly the myrrh and rose? Nevertheless, I still find it lovely.

    Hunter

HUNTER He turned, and standing there was a tall woman, with long, tawny hair, and skin the color of burnt caramel. She wore dappled leather clothes, mottled in shades of gray and brown. She had a battered leather duffel bag over her shoulder. She was carrying a staff, and she had a knife at her belt and an electric flashlight strapped to her wrist. She was also, without question, the most beautiful woman that Richard had ever seen. Leonine amber, tanned hides, clove, and clary sage. Mmmmm! I like this one! I generally love amber, but leather doesn't always work with me. However, this is a very smooth blend with both of these notes blending seamlessly. I get a hint of cloves, but it is not too dominant on me (as it is in Clockwork Couture Male). It is a warm, fairly unisex scent, fitting well with my mental image of the beautiful bodyguard Hunter (who is described as having caramel skin, but who would not really be suited by a scent with a caramel note). It reminds me a little of Coyote, I think.

Wynter wakeneth al my care, Nou this leves waxeth bare; Ofte I sike ant mourne sare When hit cometh in my thoght Of this worldes joie, hou hit goth al to noht. May we be saved and save ourselves from these hard, cruel times, and may we find strength together, for we know not where we go, nor how long we will dwell here. A warming, uplifting, strengthening scent: patchouli and sweet amber with champaca, bourbon vanilla, and frankincense. This is just beautiful. All of the notes are evident, with the frankincense and bourbon vanilla initially prominent. In time, the champaca and patchouli become more dominant. It's not overly sweet. It's not a churchy incense scent nor a dirty hippy scent, but somewhere in a happy middle place. It reminds me of something which is escaping me at the moment.

    Cemetery Creep

This summer, Brian got married at the Mountain View Mausoleum. As a side benefit, the Barrials got to spend hours skulking around its beautiful, cavernous halls in the weeks leading up to the event. Lilith loves the vast quietness of the mausoleum almost as much as she enjoys playing tag in the cemetery, and wandered the halls doing impromptu math equations to figure out how old people were when they passed. I love this little cemetery creep with all my cobwebby heart. Marble-white musk, orris root, and vanilla blossom. Potent, sweet, narcotic, floral. I don't get a lot of vanilla, at least initially, nor is it overly powdery. It seems to be a close cousin of Pediophobia, although I should try them side-by-side to confirm. I like this, especially after about an hour or so.

    Door

DOOR She was dressed in a variety of clothes thrown over each other: odd clothes, dirty velvets, muddy lace, rips and holes through which other layers and styles could be seen. She looked, Richard thought, as if she’s done a midnight raid on the History of Fashion section of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and was still wearing everything she had taken. Her short hair was filthy, but looked like it might have been a dark reddish color under the dirt. Golden honey, nicotiana, blue chamomile, and cistus. I was thrilled to try this one, as I'm reading Neverwhere at the moment. I love Door in the book, and I love this scent! When wet it smells very floral: a green, spring-like floral, maybe a little like clover or sweet grass? As it dries, the honey really comes out, adding much warmth and depth and beauty, but without being cloying. It becomes more womanly and powerful, in an elegant, almost regal manner. It's amazing: this scent really captures Door to me: when I first meet her in the book, she seems young and almost child-like, but my perception of her is evolving I see her strength and maturity. I plan to slather myself with this oil as I finish reading Neverwhere today! Thank you Beth, for this amazing oil! It is going into my regular rotation!!!

    Dragon-Smooched Snake Oil

I'm so pleased I managed to snag a bottle of this lovely "mistake"! As Deceitfuldescender notes, it starts out with a sweet cola-like note. It's sugary, smooth, and delicious although not in a foody way. Snake Oil is in there, but this blend reminds me more of some other of my favorites including Luna Negra and Panther Moon. It's got decent throw initially and is still going strong and is fairly linear at 3 hours. I honestly don't get that much patchouli, and the honey is the pretty, non-cat pee version. I do detect the dragon's blood, and it is indeed similar to that of Dragon's Milk. This is possibly my favorite SO blends ever, I think.

    Pediophobia

Fear of Dolls (But not ventriloquist dummies. Thats an entire phobia unto itself.) White porcelain cracked by white tobacco, threads of brittle cognac, and vanilla filigree. This is a very interesting blend. I suspect this will be something that I won't reach for much in the near future but will come to really enjoy it later after it has aged and after I have come to associate it with my life at this point. That doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement. I do like it, though. I had hoped for more sweetness from the tobacco and vanilla, but it is dry, elegant, perfumey, even. I detect something that smells like white tea; I wonder if that is the white porcelain note? The more I wear it, the more I like it. The throw is very good, and I when I get little whiffs of it, it's very pleasing. It does have a bit of the loud 80's bombshell perfumes feel to it.

    Snake's Kiss

This was the Luper I was most excited about! I thought, naively, that I knew what this was going to smell like. I slathered myself last week with 8-year-aged Snake Oil and O, and thought that Snake's Kiss would smell as magnificent as that combo did. I was even more excited when I read Violet Chaos's review and saw that the honey was not the heavy "O" honey, which can go a bit cat-pee on me. Caveat: I did just get this bottle last night, so it needs to age. But Snake's Kiss smells nothing like my expectations. Oddly, I get something that smells like lavender, the lemon that VC noted, and almost a tea note... (you see where I'm going here, don't you?) It smells to me like Dorian with a drop of Snake Oil added to it. It's really quite nice, but I need to re-evaluate again because my expectations were so solid but soooo far off on this one.

    The Russian Dance

THE RUSSIAN DANCE Florentine iris, black tea, labdanum, patchouli, champaca flower, benzoin, and ambergris. The Russian Dance is one of my favorite parts of the Nutcracker, and the combination of notes intrigued me. Wet: Sharply floral, with black tea astringency. A few minutes later: a little bit of the champaca flower is showing through now. It's still rather sharp, but is starting to mellow a bit. It is a fairly bold scent, if that makes any sense. I smell the patchouli now a bit; a little bit of an earthy undertone. I like it, but I'm not sure how often I will wear it.

    Étude de Déshabillé

Black amber, 7-year aged patchouli, cashmeran, and tobacco leaf. Dark, chewy, sexy, woodsy. The cashmeran keeps it from being "dirty", I think, and gives it bit of an elegant "clean" vibe. Good, strong, throw initially, and that peanut butter thing that patchouli sometimes does is only there for a brief moment. Not sweet. I think I love this. I think you will too. Edit: I'm wearing this again today, and after 5 hours, the patchouli is nearly gone; I mostly smell the cashmeran at this point, and it's a nice, classy, woody scent. The initial throw has disappeared, and this seems like more of a skin scent. Very unisex. I now know I love this.

    The Goddess of Mischief

I'm trying this scent for the first time, and I've fallen under its spell. It does start with a blast of lavender. I get hints of most of the other unlisted notes that others above have commented on. There is a definite leather feeling, a metallic vibe, and a hint of band-aid, all notes I'm not a huge fan of. Yet I still find myself unable to stop nomming my arm. It's a clean, elegant, and fascinating. Will have to try again, but this might be a full bottle.

    Humanite

Tuberose, white peach, orange blossom, lemon peel, and caramelized vanilla. Upon first application, Humanite is a gorgeous, literally mouthwatering (!) fruity-floral fragrance, grounded by the sweet caramelized vanilla lurking in the background. I can detect each note, yet none stands our more than any of the others. The white peach and lemon peel leave the party after a while, leaving a trace of their fruitiness in their wake. The tuberose, orange blossom, and caramelized vanilla are more prominent now. As it fades a bit more it becomes a sweet, pretty, soft scent. The tuberose is never overwhelming, and the citrus keeps the whole thing from ever being cloying. Despite the rather eerie image on the bottle, this is a very lovely and happy scent, evocative of spring and fresh young things.

    The Serpentine

The Serpentine is one of my all-time favorite BPALs, I think. It's Dorian, amped up on the lavender and vanilla. I find it so comforting and beautiful. It's a soft, lovely lavender that is never harsh or weedy. The vanilla is marshmallow-ey, giving the entire scent the vibe of TKO mixed with Dorian. I do love this and am so glad to have a bottle.

    Creamy scents that aren't foody?

I agree. Tissue is a gardenia scent that I think has a creamy vibe to it. Also, Katrina van Tassel definitely seems creamy to me too! I am also someone who did not find Zorya P. to be particularly creamy. It is gorgeous, however.

    Solstice Lace

On me, this is a slightly floral, slightly apple-ey, slightly incense-ey blend grounded by the lace base. The apple is not that strong, but blends in nicely with the other notes. I get no bonfire smoke at all, but maybe that will change after it rests a bit. I do get a warm, summery, pastoral vibe though. It's fairly potent in terms of throw; the longevity seems pretty good too (I could still smell traces of it on my wrist when I woke up after putting it on at bedtime). I really, really like this. If you like most of the other Laces, you will likely like this.

The Moon Reflected in Every Rice Paddy Hair Gloss

This is a lovely scent indeed, and could easily become my favorite hair gloss. I'm surprised that no one yet has compared it to Antique Lace... I'm wearing both today, and I'm in a lovely almost-powdery vanilla cloud.

    Joyful Moon

JOYFUL MOON There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream, The earth, and every common sight, To me did seem Apparelled in celestial light, The glory and the freshness of a dream. It is not now as it hath been of yore;— Turn wheresoe'er I may, By night or day. The things which I have seen I now can see no more. The Rainbow comes and goes, And lovely is the Rose, The Moon doth with delight Look round her when the heavens are bare, Waters on a starry night Are beautiful and fair; The sunshine is a glorious birth; But yet I know, where'er I go, That there hath past away a glory from the earth. White musk, French vanilla, ambrette seed, frankgipani, angelica root, white rose, orris, and honeysuckle. I have been looking forward to trying this one as soon as I read the description- lots of notes in here that I like a lot! It is indeed a beautiful blend. I think in my mind it was going to smell a bit like Posset's Scent of Angels, and there is some similarity, but not much. The honeysuckle and rose are there, but balanced very well. The white musk is gentle and clean. I don't really detect the orris much. The vanilla is subtle and sweet. I love this! Wish I had purchased a backup bottle!
