In dramatic contrast to the soft innocence of Snow White and the dew-kissed freshness of her sister, Rose Red, this is a blood red, voluptuous rose, velvet-petaled, at the height of bloom. Haughty and imperious, vain, yet incomparably lovely to the eye, but thick with thorns of jealousy, pride and hatred. this smells like velvety dark red roses to me with a bit of a watery undertone. i think crabtree and evelyn had a similar scent that my mom had, because this smells very familiar. this reminds me a bit of tea rose but is less sweet and more watery. it's less sharp and more well rounded than rose red. i like this a lot for days when i want a pure rose scent.

this scent is truly evocative of the description. i can't decide whether i like it or not, at first i get the leather and a bit of smoky sweetness, but now that it's dry i am getting a weird fruity-candle smell, which i think is dragons blood because dragons blood hates my skin generally. i'll have to try this one once more at a later time to be totally sure how i feel about it, but right now i'm not loving it all that much dry.

this is mostly a spicy rose (from the carnation?) with amber and bergamot. thankfully i dont get too much jasmine! everything else is blended well and doesn't jump out at me. it reminds me of love in the asylum a bit, but is less spicy and more subtle. i love spicy rose scents, so this works great for me.

this smells powdery on me with a slight floral tinge. bpal's honey note often turns powdery on me though, so i kind of expected it, but figured i'd try anyway. it's just too sweet and powdery for me, so osun's off to the swaps.

i think i mostly get the orchid and currant with a greenish background. i generally like orchid and currant, but i think perhaps having them in one scent is too sweet for me. the scent is nice, i just wish it had more muskiness or incense to it, then i think it would work perfectly for me.

this starts off as a snowy-pine or snowy-fir scent with a hint of the juniper berry. once it dries, the snow mellows a bit and it gets more musky and resiny. i was dreading the cedar in this, but thankfully it didn't even make an appearance! i like this more than i thought i would, so i will keep my decant.

this is a very strong herbal at first-i mostly get lavender and orange blossom with the cypress in the background. it dries to a soft floral-orange blossom that's pretty innocuous. amazing since it was so sharp and herbal in the beginning. this scent is also really familiar, but i just can't place it. i like this on the drydown, but am not sure how much i would actually wear it, so i'll probably swap it.

i agree with the regan, alice, maiden and the mouse's long and sad tale seem very princessy to me. i also find morgause and glasgow a bit princessy.

this is very sweet, smells like apples and honey. looking at the description i realize i am probably smelling peach, rather than apples. many a time, calla lily has ruined a scent for me, but i can't really smell it in this. still, this scent isn't very me, but interesting to try. it reminds me a lot of has no hanna, as well, but a little more vanilla-y and less cinnamon-y.

i instantly smell the lime of tarot: the star mixed with light, watery florals. this reminds me a lot of the star, but this is more watery/floral, and the star is sweeter and fizzier. i really like this scent in the beginning, but after awhile i get a sour-floral smell, which i think may be the iris as sometimes it can be bad with my skin chemistry. luckily the sourness fades and it ends up a beautiful sweet floral with lime with a base of white amber.

this is a very strange scent but i really like it. it instantly reminded me of an old house or hotel with dusty red carpets and velvet walls. i love finding wood scents that work on me, since it's a rare occurence! this smells like a woody-rose (the rose is very slight) and dust. very evocative.

i should know better to stay away from churchy incense blends, but i keep hoping for one to work on me! this one has the dreaded frankincense which turns to pencil lead on my skin in the imp it smells nice, like something bright and shining with a slight cake scent, but on my skin i just get pencil lead and something sharp and sneeze inducing. ETA: an hour later it smelled really nice and warm and musky. so now i'll have to re-try it/debate whether or not it is worth wearing because of the 1st stage.

06 version: this smells very similar to the 05 version to me, but perhaps less chocolatey and floral. it just seems more subtle in general, and doesn't have as much throw on my skin as 05 did. i like both of them, and i guess i'd wear this as more of a day scent and the other more for going out.

Rose Recommendations - which blend is for me?
theseagrows replied to Nadirah's topic in Recommendations
gypsy queen on me is dark rose with spicy incense. love in the asylum is similar. though gypsy queen is more incensey and l.i.t.a. is more rosy. -
omg i never ordered this because i wasn't sure of that pear/cucumber combo. i tried it at a friend's last night and this was truly a surprise and i LOVE it! i think i sense the black orchid and crystal musk. not much else i can pick out, because this is a very good blend. it isnt as sweet as it sounds and is dark and floral and really beautiful. now to hunt down a bottle.

tried this at a friend's house. all the foodiness had initially turned me off to this scent, but once i tried it i was in LOVE and must now find a bottle! the cocoa isn't overwhelming and it's a warm vanilla-orange-chocolate scent, but somehow it's not too foody for me i'm not sure about all the other notes. i think i can sense the underlying tea, sandalwood and red amber, which gives it a nice warmth. luckily the sandalwood and cocoa don't go overpowering on me as they have in other blends.

i tried this one at a friend's house. i tend to not be great at finding notes in aquatic scents, because my skin amps that note. the only aquatic yule i own is talvikuu and it reminds me of that because it has the icy scent to it, but it's less minty and intense. i dont get ylang ylang but i think the berries are apparent. so i guess berry aquatic. not a bad scent, just not really me.

BPAL Patchouli - there's nothing else like it
theseagrows replied to Ishtar's topic in Recommendations
i don't like patchouli much either, but once in a great while a patchouli blend works on me. of those, i recommend: ravenous desire count dracula sin i think i can smell it most in desire, with my skin chemistry, but for some reason it doesn't bother me in that scent. in the others i just don't seem to notice it that much! -
i loved stardust 05, and still have a fairly full bottle, so i got in a decant circle and snagged an imp of 06 before committing to a bottle. good thing i did too, because i like 05 much better than the current one. on my skin, 06 seems to be heavier on the poppy on ylang ylang, notes that i don't really like, whereas 05 was heavier on the champagne, musk and tuberose. 05 was sparkly and 06 is more powdery and dry, at least on my skin.

this smells like powdery herbals and woods on my skin. i think i am getting mostly myrrh and cypress, but i'm not really sure. it's difficult to pick out notes. i wish i got the orange, clove, musk and smoke more, then i think i'd like this scent a lot better. it's just not very distinct to me.
-
i like this one better than i imagined! i don't usually go for fruity scents, but i think the florals and woods temper them a bit in this scent. i get the snowy note and some floral and woods and just a touch of apple and that's about it. besides the aquatic, i can't make out any notes at all, it's very well blended. not a big bottle purchase, but i will keep my decant.
-
my skin mostly ate this up, so i reapplied. it's a warm citrus with a slight sugary note to it. but maybe that's just the fig? this isn't overly ambery on me. in fact, i wish it was more ambery, as it's a bit to sweet for my tastes. a very 'juicy' citrus. i may keep my decant, but probably won't get a bottle.
-
this smells like fig, leather and musk on me, with a slight patchouli. since the patchouli is understated, i really like this! it's so figgy on me, which kind of smells like the dusty rags mentioned in the description. methinks i'll have to get a big bottle.
-
i get a sweet snowy scent like whatever is in talvikuu, but the base of this is different. i think i smell the violet far in the background if i inhale deeply. the snow note is cloyingly strong on me at first, and doesn't settle much. this might smell lovely in another hour, but i really don't want to have to wait that long to be able to wear it :/

i am getting a foody/fruity scent from this. maybe it's the pastries? i get a sort of burnt-fruit smell, and it's one of the fruits that turns into a scented doll on me...perhaps grape or plum? i smell something else underneath but can't place it, dirt is the closest thing i can think of as the notes listed, but it doesn't smell like typical bpal dirt to me. i dont get any pine or snow or anything like that, and i dont like this scent on me either.
