'Tis The Voice Of The Lobster

Mmm, I love this scent. It starts off smelling like watermelon Jolly Ranchers (which I liked, but didn't want to wear as a scent). On drydown, the gardenia and strawberry come out to play, mellowing it out and turning it into something just beautiful. Eutectic's description was right on for me...it is so stunning and complex. I think this goes on my ever-growing 5ml list. I can't stop sniffing my skin where I tested this. ETA: There's a note in this that goes the same beautiful way as Poisoned Apple. I've no idea what it is exactly, but I suspect it's something in the "woody, musky-weird base." Wish I knew exactly what it is, I've been trying to track it down since I tried Poisoned Apple...I want to buy every BPAL with that scent.

    Come to Me

I don't remember who said it, but whomever described it as rose-scented soap was right on. That is exactly what this smells like on me. As I amp rose, and am not particularly fond of it, I was uncertain about this scent... But I had a date that I was hoping would go well, so I wore it anyway. The date did go very well. Can't be sure if it was the perfume or my natural charm, but I will definitely be trying it out again. It's not one I'd choose for scent purposes, but if it continues to be successful in doing what it's supposed to do, I'll keep it around.

    Chuparosa

Got this as a frimp with my last order, and am so very excited. I've mentioned before that I amp rose like mad. The same is true in this case except...it doesn't smell like rose perfume. It smells like an actual rose. I didn't believe my nose at first. I think it's because it's so green... I'm sure there are other floral scents in there, but they do not show up on me. For once, this is not a curse...this has to be the most lovely rose scent I've ever encountered (not attached to a stem anyway). I am picturing a bright yellow and light pink bouquet. Definitely on the list for my next order...I can smell like fresh rose petals, without it turning awful and cloying! Yay!

    Baku

Trying this tonight to see how it works on my nightmares, but as far as the scent... I adore it, but I am a freak of nature. Anise does not smell like licorice to me...it has always smelled like Bigelow Earl Grey tea (which I think is better in taste and smell than any other Earl Grey tea I have ever encountered). I do not know why this is, but I am not complaining. I hate licorice, and love Earl Grey tea. This is mostly anise, but with touches of eucalyptus and lavender. Very relaxing, not at all strong. I've been pressing my nose to my skin trying to get more of the scent...it just seems to get better the more I smell it. It was a little strange when I first applied it, but it soon calmed down into this pleasant scent that reminds me of the gentle lapping of water on the shore of a lake. Not sweet, but very light and pleasing (maybe this is the way Elizabeth Bennet smelled).

    Antique Lace

My sister-in-law used to wear a perfume that smelled exactly like this. I was young when I noticed it first, and didn't talk to her often once I got older, so I never asked what it was. For years I searched for something that smelled like it, to no avail. No vanilla perfume was what I was going for. I had given it up as a lost cause, when along came Antique Lace! I put it on today and it immediately hit me--this was it! The scent I had quested for, the scent I loved so much for so many years. Warm, sweet vanilla musk, with a very light touch of linen and flowers. 5ml now, please.

    Berry Moon 2009

In the bottle: strong vinegar. Rather offputting, but as always, being familiar with BPAL and skin chemistry, I forged ahead. Also smelled of vinegar when I first put it on but then... Magic! (Not that it was surprising.) Warm berries and honey, with a light sweet floral note. Sort of like Lady Una, only not as green. I've worn it two days in a row now...so definitely glad I got it, but must be careful not to use it all right away. Tomorrow I must resist the pretty purple bottle, and go for something else.

    Nyx

Ah, rose...a note that just hates me, and tends to amplify on my skin in an awful sort of way. I can smell nothing in this blend but rose--overpowering, sickly sweet, rotten rose. *sigh* I so wanted to be able to wear this, but I am once again defeated by my old enemy.

    Plunder

The lab must have known I would adore their piratey scents...got both this and Ile de la Tortue as frimps today, and they are both fantastic (and rather opposite of one another). Warm cinnamon spice and tea. Somehow simultaneously sexy and homey...I think because it reminds me of Chai tea? Yet another 5ml to add to my list.

    Ile de la Tortue

Beautiful scent. Just got it as a frimp from the lab, and I am in love. Heady and tropical, definitely a jungle scent. Brings to mind hanging vines and large, colorful flowers, and perhaps an emerald snake slithering through the greenery, flicking out a bright tongue to taste the warm wildness of the air. Absolutely on my 5ml list.

    Poisoned Apple

Doesn't smell much like apples on my skin (though definitely does in the bottle), but is still absolutely magical. It must be the opium and hemlock...dark and warm and enticing, with a very very faint trace of apple underneath. Loved this one so much I purchased a 5ml of it immediately, because I was afraid I'd run out before the bottle got here.

    Jezirat Al Tennyn

I'm having a difficult time thinking of a way to describe how this smells on me. It's like sharp minty motor oil and strong men's cologne (not good men's cologne, really bad men's cologne). It's absolutely horrible. This is the first BPAL scent I've run into that has just gone completely and totally awful when it comes into contact with my skin. So bad that I had another first--I washed it off immediately. It's really too bad, I loved the concept. :-(

    Thalia

This scent is absolutely perfect for Thalia. It is such a happy scent, and the feeling bubbles over every time I wear it. The pear balances out the floral perfectly, leaving it warm and sunny, but not overwhelming. It makes me think of a field of bright yellow flowers, with a cool, clear creek trickling beside it. Doesn't have much throw, but does last forever on me. I find myself reaching for this more than any other floral that I have. Definitely on the 5ml list for the next order. Absolutely love it.

    Port-Au-Prince

Delicious sexy clove and cinnamon. Got it as a frimp, love at first sniff. Not something I will wear all the time, but definitely when I want to feel sexy and different. Must get 5ml now.

    Ulalume

Starry white lilies lend an eerie brightness to the deep black wooded scents of cypress and oak, layered with a touch of crushed dried leaves and the faintest aquatic note. I have a bit of a ritual with the frimps I get from the lab (if I don't recognize them right off). I try them out and try to guess what components are in the scent before I look them up. I put this on, and said aloud "It smells like trees!" Ulalume is beautiful and earthy. It smells like a forest, in the best possible way. I only get a little bit of lily--just enough to balance out the smell of trees and dirt and turn it into something I would wear as a perfume. Really lovely.

    Les Infortunes de la Vertu

Warm leathery rather sexy orange blossom scent. I was testing a few different imps, because I get overeager when I have new BPAL to try, but kept going back to sniff this one. Very comforting, slightly masculine but not enough to keep me from wearing it. I'm going to try it a few more times, but might end up with a 5ml of this.

    Wings of Azrael

Smells exactly like bubblegum on me. It's actually rather nice, but it's making me crave that Fruit Stripe gum with the zebra on it I used to chew as a kid. It reminds me of those warm, sunny childhood scenes that somehow get shuffled into the back of your mind when the busy hustle of the present takes over. Have adored most of the frimps the lab sent, but this is my favorite so far because of the lovely flashbacks it gave me. Not something I would really wear out, but will keep it around so that I can get that carefree ten-year-old back whenever I may need her. Edit: Tried again, and got a very nice floral instead of the bubblegum scent. Both were good scents, still no complaints on this one.

    Lysander

Lilac musk, tonka, wood violet, and urbane lime rind, with a Venus-kissed tangle of myrtle, blackberry leaf, and benzoin. Got this as a frimp, just tried it today... Went on smelling like antifreeze (or strong, acidic maple syrup, which is the same general scent). On drydown, smells like maple syrup and spearmint. Very odd, not entirely unpleasant, but not something I really want to smell like. Not sure exactly what my body chemistry is having issues with on this one...oh well. Edit: I tried again today, my body chemistry must have been off. Still slightly maple syrupy, but less antifreeze maple syrup, more floral maple syrup. Will try again in a week or so, and see how it does then.

    Snake Oil

First thing I thought when I put it on was that it smelled like I had just entered a head shop. Dry down didn't help--still smells like incense, just much much stronger incense. Definitely not my taste, but I'll let it age and try again later. Edit: Tried again, and victory! My body usually amps vanilla, which is why I was rather surprised Snake Oil didn't work on me the first time...but, have given it two more chances (wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke before I updated), and Snake Oil has turned from incense to a warm spicy vanilla. Definitely something I will wear now. I am glad I tried again...was so disappointed after all the wonderful reviews that this one didn't work on me.

    Katharina

This is my favorite BPAL scent so far. Wet: Light and not very noticeable--mostly musk and apricot. Dry: Apricot faded into the background, but didn't disappear entirely. Scent became sweet and floral. Very full and lovely.

    Lady Una

When I first put this on, it smelled rather like a Christmas tree, which did not bode well. However, as it dried down the warm honey musk came out, and mixed with something that smelled like jasmine, but I know was not. Sadly did not get either blackberry or vanilla, but it's still a lovely scent, and I will be wearing it often.
