    2010: Salt Phoenix

In 2010, we had the privilege of working with one of the greatest storytellers of the modern era, Peter S. Beagle, and our Last Unicorn series went live. Peter is one of the most kind-hearted, gentlest humans that I’ve ever known, and we bonded over both of us being the children of teachers. In February, we celebrated Valentine’s Day with our Lovecraftian tourism campaign, produced by the Arkham Visitors Bureau: The Miskatonic Valley is for Lovers. Los Angeles Lunacy moved to Dark Delicacies at their Grand Reopening in May of 2010, and Umlaut and Victorian Garden went live at the Mütter Museum in August of 2010. This was also the year that I almost keeled over like a wilted cucumber during my panel at the West Hollywood Book Fair, and the heat was so intense that it demolished the entirety of the tester stock that we’d brought with us to vending and our soaps turned to ooze. In June, Black Phoenix Trading Post sponsored the Carcosan Interdimensional Football Association Underworld Cup XXI Championship. My money was on the P’nathi Bholes to win, especially after they soundly defeated the Gugs 7-0 in the group phase, securing their position in the knockout round. Mist-veiled lilac and salt spray with osmanthus, white jasmine, and icy lavender. Lilac, jasmine, salt and a whiff of lavender. This one is a very lilac-centered blend. The jasmine is most prominent on wet, but it calms down as it dries, and the salt edge appears. When I first apply it, it's almost too much, but if you were looking for a lilac centered blend, seek no more. This one is gorgeous, and feels very historic - like the village where Anne of Avonlea lives in Prince Edward Island. It's got that natural blossom, and salty air, and it just smells clean and pure. Good throw and wear length.

    Luna Azul 2018

Okay, so I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I do. The jasmine is soft and curling, the currant adds a soft fruitiness, but then I get mainly a caramelized resin. It's soft, feminine, and very nostalgic. This is the smell of standing on a full moon on an late summer night, when it's not summer anymore and it's transitioning into autumn so you get a bit of a chill in the air. There's a quiet in the air, and you're struck with a sudden contemplation and reflection of your life. It's not sad or nostalgic, but it is that powerful moment of calm as you take inventory. Haunting. Beautiful. Lovely. Medium throw and wear length.

    Viscacaeaphobia

Cucumber and mistletoe. So I love me some cucumber and it makes me think of Blue Moon 2004, summer, and Hendrik's Gin drinks. This time however, the mistletoe gives it a distinctive Yule herbiness. It smells like a musty green. Good throw and wear length.

    Cherophobia

Carnation with a touch of orange peel and champagne. Huh, funner and more wearable than I expected. Also, if you love carnations, give this a whirl. Because you know, carnations. Good throw and wear length.

    Pumpkin Spice Cathedral

Deep woodsy incense that smells almost like cedar and patchouli mixed together. No spices. Only a deep woodsy incense. Very masculine. Medium throw and wear length.

    Fortuna Barbata

Mandarin and green powdery musk. I can see how for some this does end up smelling like soap. It's a very clean, neutral scent. It's bright and happy, and hopeful. Good throw and wear length.

    Fortuna Restitutrix

Clove, olive blossom over a spicy brown leather. This smells like clove leather. If you like either clove or brown leather, I'd say go for this. Slightly masculine. Good throw and wear length.

    Krikophobia

Fear of Religious Services Sour wine drying on an ancient ciborium, crumbling pages of a yellowed sacramentary, blinding glints of bitter white sunlight shattering off a tarnished monstrance, and doleful voices droning through a haze of oppressive, smothering incense. Tons of red wine, squeeze of orange, and a hint of incense. This one just smells like fruity red wine. Sangria anyone? Great throw and wear length. For lovers of sangria.

    Amaxophobia

Motor oil and that pine car air freshner. This smells like car, scorched rubber and all. Actually, I imagine this is what Supernatural's Impala smells like. Dark, broody, and ready to rumble. Good throw and wear length.

    Dana O'Shee Atmosphere Spray

Honey, almond, and vanilla. This is a very honey-heavy sweet blend. Foodie, comforting, and lovely.

Sweet Ginger and Patchouli Hair Gloss

Gentle ginger and a touch of patchouli. It was a soft, herbal ginger-patchouli. Clean. Comfy. Gender neutral. Medium throw and wear length.

    Lick It Hair Gloss

Peppermint SN that slowly dissipates into a soft minty. Gone after about 30 minutes on my hair. *sigh*

    Honeyed Apple Hair Gloss

[No additional description provided.] This one is pretty straight forward. It's a very sugary honeyed apple blend. I get red apple, and sugary honey. It's got great throw and wear length.

    Frankincense Apple Hair Gloss

Apple with a touch of resinous frankincense. The apple is more prominent when applied, and it smells more like apple blossom, and then you get the resinous frankincense coming through. Low throw, low wear length.

Dead Leaves and Burnt Marshmallows Hair Gloss

Dead leaves and a whiff of burnt sugar and vanilla creme. Yup, it's like dead leaves with a glop of marshmallow that melted off a stick from the fire. Average throw and wear length.

    Caw-Caw Hair Gloss

Patchouli, clove, and a touch of lilac. This smells like glossy black feathers. Dark, foreboding, lustrous. Medium throw and wear length.

    Blue Moon 2018

Cool and fresh! Bamboo, aloe, elemi and iris are the notes that stand out the most to me. It's actually a very Asian Blue Moon to me - probably because of the bamboo. Light, fresh, and very Shunga-esque actually. Low throw, good wear length.

    Aegir

Sea-faring masculine lavender. I get lavender and musky woody base. Very pirate-based lavender. Medium throw and wear length.

    Frostbitten Malediction

No additional description provided. Scent description for Malediction is here.] This one is a weird mix of Snow White's fluffly snowy almond and a deep undertone of vetiver. On wet, the vetiver is extra gritty and smelling like bacon-smoke. This actually fades out, and then it dries down to Snow White with a touch of patchouli. Good throw and wear length.

    Allodoxaphobia

Cranberry with a peel of red pepper, and a whiff of citrusy bergamot. Fruity, red, cranberry jam. Good throw and wear length.

    Syngenesophobia

Okay, on wet, both the effervescent gin and red wine made this a bubbly fruity affair. However, the aftershave makes an appearance and now it smells like a drunk uncle on gin. Medium throw and wear length.

    Seven Swans-a-Swimming Hair Gloss

Six Geese-A-Laying Five Golden Rings Four Calling Birds Three French Hens Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree Pale white lilies and elegant gardenia shadowed by bloody clove and black myrrh, gnashing with sharp fangs of screaming eucalyptus. Lilies, gardenia, and myrrh. On wet, it's a very minty watery lily and gardenia blend. After a few hours, you get the clove and myrrh peeking through. This smells like WHEN SWANS ATTACK. Something beautiful and majestic that is ready to take you down.
  23. zankoku_zen

    Frozen Chypre Hair Gloss

I get a ton of chypre, with a sweep of piney sage, and a touch of frankincense. Honestly, it sort of reminded me to Jean Nate, and it has a very old-timey, sophisticated feel.
  24. zankoku_zen

    My Secret Deeds Hair Gloss

Spicy birch tar and labdanum. This one is an inky resinous blend. Medium throw and wear length.
  25. zankoku_zen

    Being, Like, Really Smart

Lavender and labdanum. As it dries, the lavender sort of fades, and I get more of the pepper. It's an odd blend. In the sense that you're falling asleep and you thought it was just a boring dream is actually a hideous nightmare. Medium throw and wear length.
