    2007: Wood Phoenix

On wet it is Snow Glass Apples and a splash of red wine. Dry the wine is gone and the SGA is much lighter. Now the honey comes out and it is like encountering a bee hive in the autumn woods. Despite all the familiar notes and blends listed in the description this is an original for sure. There is a tart whiff that I can detect if I'm huffing my wrist close otherwise it is sandalwood honey green tea. Really hard to pin down. A winner for sure.

    2004: Paper Phoenix

Do you like Dorian? Do you like Antique Lace? Then this should be a no brainer buy. It is gorgeous. I've worn it twice and I only got it yesterday. The is a hint of sweet lavender as well. It is such a relaxing sweet tea blend I can't recommend it enough.

    Svadhinaopatika

Proud, contented, and aglow with joy, she has conquered her lover with her charms, and she knows with all her soul that he is completely and utterly devoted to her. In bliss, she basks in the blessings of the God of Love: golden amber, oude, red sandalwood, massoia bark, honey, and currant. Ok - you have to try it and let it go through it's mighty morphing stages. It starts out soapy on my skin, no idea why. Then it warms up to a sort of honey soapy feel, and then the fun starts. A sort of butter/coconut/honey vibe comes out after about 15 minutes and then last it settles politely and sensually into honeyed jasmine. Don't know where the jasmine note comes out but it definately isn't a jasmine essential oil, just something that somehow combines to end up smelling like jasmine. Truely lovely.

    Epistrophia

She who turns to love. Florentine iris, frankincense, violet, ylang ylang, amber, and orchid. Dry ethreal flowers. Definatly get the ylang ylang and a clear orchid note that reminds me of Black Orchid. A very elegant and sophisicated blend with just a hint of lemon in the background

    Day of the Skulls

In Bolivia, many people hold to the tradition of keeping the skulls of their ancestors with them in their homes, caring for their remains. It is believed that each person has seven souls, and one of those souls stays with the skull after death, enabling a spirit to grant protection and prophetic dreams to their descendants, and to bless their families with good health and prosperity. The Bolivian Fiesta de las Natitas, or Dia de los Natitas, is a day of honor for these ancestors. Their skulls are dressed with fragrant blossoms, and offerings of cocoa leaves, alcohol, and cigarettes are made. White sandalwood, beeswax, and frankincense crowned by hydrangea, rose, and kantuta blossoms, dressed with tobacco, cocoa leaves and flowers from the sacred Cactus of the Four Winds. This is Roses, covered by sweet roses, with a side of roses and then roses for dessert. I really can't smell anything else wet. On this is one of the rare rose bpals that doesn't turn to burnt rubber on my skin - Score! As it dries I can see the hydrangea peaking and doing a slow dance with the roses, just a lovely heady floral

    Ghûlheim

Ghouls do not build. They are parasites and scavengers, eaters of carrion. The city they call Ghûlheim is something they found, long ago, but did not make. No one they call knows (if anyone human ever knew) what kind of creatures it was that made those buildings, who honeycombed the rock with tunnels and towers, but it is certain that no-one but the ghoul-folk could have wanted to stay there, or even to approach that place. Even from the path below Ghûlheim, even from miles away, Bod could see that all of the angles were wrong -- that the walls sloped crazily, that it was every nightmare he had ever endured made into a place, like a huge mouth of jutting teeth. It was a city that had been built just to be abandoned, in which all the fears and madnesses and revulsions of the creatures who built it were made into stone. The ghoul folk had found it and delighted in it and called it home. A dark and disjointed scent: smoke and black musk, bladderwrack, opopponax, galangal, and pepper. Clove cigarettes and sticky club floors. Curling smoke with a hint of cola sweetness. Smells surprisingly good on my skin. But then I like clove cigs and sticky cola. Dripping fatty candlewax is in there too. This is really well blended.

    Miss Lupescu

"Bod," said Silas. "This is Miss Lupescu." Miss Lupescu was not pretty. Her face was pinched and her expression was disapproving. Her hair was grey, although her face seemed too young for grey hair. Her front teeth were slightly crooked. She wore a bulky mackintosh, and a man's tie around her neck. "How do you do, Miss Lupescu?" said Bod. Miss Lupescu said nothing. She sniffed. Then she looked at Silas and said, "So. This is the boy." She got up from her seat and walked all around Bod, nostrils flared, as if she were sniffing him. When she had made a complete circuit, she said, "You will report to me on waking, and before you go to sleep. I have rented a room in a house over there." She pointed to a roof just visible from where they stood. "However, I shall spend my time in this graveyard. I am here as a historian, researching the history of old graves. You understand, boy? Da?" "Bod," said Bod. "It's Bod. Not boy." "Short for Nobody," she said. "A foolish name. Also, Bod is a pet name. A nickname. I do not approve. I will call you 'boy'. You will call me 'Miss Lupescu'." Bod looked up at Silas, pleadingly, but there was no sympathy on Silas's face. He picked up his bag and said, "You will be in good hands with Miss Lupescu, Bod. I am sure that the two of you will get on." "We won't!" said Bod. "She's horrible!" "That," said Silas, "Was a very rude thing to say. I think you should apologise, don't you?" Bod didn't, but Silas was looking at him and he was carrying his black bag, and about to leave for no-one knew how long, so he said, "I'm sorry Miss Lupescu." At first she said nothing in reply. She merely sniffed. Then she said, "I have come a long way to look after you, boy. I hope you are worth it." Animalic musk, with amber, patchouli, ho wood, cypress, almond blossom, golden sandalwood, and strange spices. First Impression - musk and sandalwood with a hint of sweet wood. There is something sharp to the musk on my skin, almost metalic, but that note fades after about 10 minutes. Or maybe that is some of the strange spices. lol. The spices are super mellow and laid back. Nothing in your face about them. If I sniff really hard I imagine I can get a whiff of cinnamon somewhere in there. Not sure about almond blossom but there is an almost almond like hint of sweetness to it. The sandalwood makes it all very easy to on the nose. And maybe it is the amber but I get a bookish dusty note. It's sort of like if Ivanuska was a librairian (which is a good thing!)
  8. Love this to pieces. Am a huge sandalwood fan and this gloss has it in spades. A nice smooth woody sweet sandalwood. I think the fig really serves to amp the sweet quality of the sandalwood, really makes it lush and creamy. I used this in my wet hair and brushed it through. When it was dry my hair was super soft and not as flyaway as normal. And the scent really lasts. I will need lots of this am just in love.

    The Convocation

A small sign in the hotel lobby announced that the Washington Room was taken that night by a private function, although there was no information as to what kind of function this might be. Truthfully, if you were to look at the inhabitants of the Washington Room that night, you would have no clearer idea of what was happening, although a rapid glance would tell you that there were no women in there. They were all men, that much was clear, and they sat at round dinner tables, and they were finishing their dessert. There were about a hundred of them, all in sober black suits, but the suits were all they had in common. They had white hair or dark hair or fair hair or red hair or no hair at all. They had friendly faces or unfriendly, helpful or sullen, open or secretive, brutish or sensitive. The majority of them were pink-skinned, but there were black-skinned men and brown-skinned. They were European, African, Indian, Chinese, South American, Filipino, American. They all spoke English when they talked to each other, or to the waiters, but the accents were as diverse as the gentlemen. They came from all across Europe and from all over the world. A macabre mélange of swanky men's colognes. A light sweet musk. Very subtle and sophisticated. No bay rum in your face like some drunken eurotrash wannabe hipster. This hottie is the real thing and doesnt need to flaunt what hes got. And I want to crawl into his lap for an hour or three for some up close and personal sniffing time. It is such a gentle scent that I just love it.

    Improvisation

Fig! I love fig so that was the first thing I noticed out of the bottle. That creamy fig scent that I love so much in Eden. On however the fig is much less prominent and it becomes a bright, sparking, almost citrusy tea blend. Beautiful.

    Coral Snake (2006)

Snake Oil with blood orange, red apple, lemon peel, plumeria, and gardenia. Am so in love with this right now. Wet: Crisp red apples! Drydown: As it dries the orange/citrus comes out with just a tiny hint of sweet flowers but the apple is still king. 30 minutes: Juicy tropical flowers, apple is still there but has mostly faded and there is a warm spicy note just starting to be hinted at. This finally settles on a juicy, mango-esque floral, with would seems like a drop of bright cherry hiding in the background. The spices come through as an almost sweet cinnamon.

    White Rose

White rose buds, with vanilla tea, benzoin, orris, coconut meat, and frankincense. This starts off all buttery sweet with a very faint dry rose in the background. There is a slight bitterness that I think might be from the frankincense but it fades after about 5 minutes and then all that is left is smooth and creamy vanilla and coconut. This smells so good it is hard not to be all *squee!* about it. Gorgeous

    Temple Viper

Snake Oil with sugar cane, frankincense, champaca, opoponax, labdanum, and hyssop. Wet: Herbal and resinous On: Don't know how but I get a distinct grape note in this when dry. It isn't in your face by any means but it is there. Mostly though it is sweet incense and spices. This one probably reminds me most of Snake oil out of all of the Pit.

    Moon of Ice

The Moon of Ice shines its pale white light on snow-blanketed hills and barren fields. Icicles dangle from skeletal branches, and the desperate howl of starving men and beasts echo through the darkness. Frost-crusted winter flowers, white pine, eucalyptus, and traditional lunar oils. A chilly blend - like walking through a snow covered forest in late winter where the temps are starting to warm and the smell of evergreen is in the air. This reminds me of my beloved Snow Moon only with the slightly sweet and minty scent of eucalyptus.

    The Owens' Tomb

"I'll do no such thing, with Owens and me having a lovely little tomb over by the daffodil patch. Plenty of room in there for a little one." Marble and dust surrounded by burdock, knotweed, dandelions, daffodils, and long-dead calla lilies. The Owens tomb is a very cold and wet flowers scent complete with green stems. Like a florists walk in cooler that is stocked only with crisp spring flowers. No heavy lush flowers, just white and muted scent ones. There is a woody stem note in there as well that comes out on drydown. I love how cold it feels without being snow/ozone/slushy

    La Vague

White peach, lily of the valley, jasmine, rose, iris, osmanthus, tangerine, white wine grape, and cream accord. In the bottle this is a syrupy sweet peach that is sugary enough to cause an diabetic coma. On it is the lovelies sweet, incensy peach you could even wish for. Not too sweet, not to peachy, just a lovely juicy scent with a hint of rich, summer blooming flowers. There is just a touch of tartness to the blend that helps to ground the sweet factor. So good.

    King Cobra (2006)

Snake Oil with orris, frankincense, and copal. Something in here reminds me of licorice - black licorice - with an almost earthy tang at the end or maybe tree bark. It is a morpher on my skin. It is a proud, confident blend.

    The Mark

The Mark, this was the last of my luper bottle buys that I tried. I left it for last because I was all wussy afraid of the vetiver. Dumb of me. Yes in the bottle and first on it is all VETIVER but after 5 minutes it mellows out and is all gorgeous dry vanilla sandalwood. The vetiver just makes it a deeper, richer scent. Totally win.

    Rozpustnica

Blue and white musks, moonflower, rose, magnolia, lemon verbena, and lychee. Starts off as a heady, lemony perfume but soon tames down to a dry musk scent tinged with a hint of citrus and a subtle floral undertone. There is a very dusty rose note in the background that swirls around the lemon verbena.

    Tiki King

Black coconut, black musk, lemon blossom, and ironwood bark. In the bottle this is the most delicious coconut ever. Reminds me of the coconut in Snake Charmer and really is all I can smell. On the lemon really comes out and the coconut takes more of a back seat. It has much more of a dry, husk type feel to it. After about an hour the lemon mostly fades on me leaving a musky, dry coconut scent in its wake. It is more of subtle blend with not that much throw. Very nice!

    Day-Old Ham

Day-Old Ham smells like motherfucking day old ham. If you thought, "Oh Beth doesn't hate us that much it will probably smell like Unicorn farts." Well Beth clearly DOES hate us this much and if you think it smells like unicorn farts it is only because unicorn farts smell like fucking day old ham. I could get out my bottle of Gore Shock and compare the two but I don't hate myself that much.

    Firethorn Berry Tea

Beat the rush and go buy a bottle of this now. You won't be sorry. I don't get any bitterness at all, more of a rose hip tea sort of blend. It reminds me a bit of Dorian and is just beautiful. Tea, a hint of sweetness and some kind of red berry in the mix.

    Sherlock Holmes

No clue how to describe this, wet it is a sweet almost juicy blend on me. Clean but in no way soapy. Unisex, or maybe just asexual. Dry it becomes more leathery with a slight bitterness. Definate win.

    Euphony

Euphony Creates an atmosphere of trust, harmony, compassion and understanding. Definitely need some harmony and understanding in my life right now. I used Euphony last night to anoint a white candle as I reflected on the areas of my life that are interconnected but not working in unison and only adding to the dissonance and stress in my life. I hope this will aid in bringing harmony to my personal, professional, and school lives as they are all pulling me in different directions right now. Euphony smells of fresh, clean, powdery florals. Possibly of the violet persuasion

    Sunbird

They were all so hungry the following morning. Zebediah T. Crawcrustle had a comedic apron on, with the words KISS THE COOK written upon it in violently green letters. He had already sprinkled the brandy-soaked raisins and grain beneath the stunted avocado tree behind the house, and he was arranging the scented woods, the herbs, and the spices on the bed of charcoal. Mustapha Stroheim and his family had gone to visit relatives on the other side of Cairo. "Does anybody have a match?" Crawcrustle asked. Jackie Newhouse pulled out a Zippo lighter, and passed it to Crawcrustle, who lit the dried cinnamon leaves and dried laurel leaves beneath the charcoal. The smoke drifted up into the noon air. "The cinnamon and sandalwood smoke will bring the Sunbird," said Crawcrustle. "Bring it from where?" asked Augustus TwoFeathers. "Why, where it always is, third lane after the old market in the Suntown district, just before you reach the old drainage ditch that was once an irrigation canal, and if you find yourself outside One-eye Khayam's carpet shop you have gone too far, "began Crawcrustle. "But I see by the expressions of irritation upon your faces that you were expecting a less succinct, less accurate description. Very well. It is in Suntown, and Suntown is in Cairo, in Egypt, where it always is, or almost always." Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab is thrilled to present a numbered, limited edition chapbook of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed short story, Sunbird, beautifully illustrated by Julie Dillon. Each package includes a 5ml bottle of perfume, created by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, that was inspired by the tale. In Neil's words, "'Sunbird' smells like resin and deserts and the phoenix." This set is a limited run of 1000. 250 were sold by CBLDF at San Diego Comic Con 2009, and the remainder are available through the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab web site. Sunbird will be available on the BPAL site as long as supplies last. This is a charitable, not-for-profit venture: proceeds from every single set go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which works to preserve and protect the First Amendment rights of the comics community. A million thanks and all our love to Neil, and to Charles Brownstein and his staff at the CBLDF! So I was totally blessed to recieve this from Beth and the lab and all I can say is "wow". I about peed my pants waiting for Snow. Glass. Apples. and I have to say, I like Sunbird even better. This is one of those super well blended scents that is really hard to pin down. It is unisex. It is sort of carnation spicy in a dark way. If I really try I can trick my brain into thinking there is smoke but truely I don't get any. Something resinous seems to be in the mix as well as something evergreenish in the drydown. It is just gorgeous.
